Memorial Day has some special significance for late-night television; you might call even it call it Judgement Day.
For some late-night fans, “Mis-Judgement Day” might also qualify.
Jay Leno’s premiere as the new permanent host of NBC’s Tonight Show took place on Memorial Day, 1992.
Going live that night to underscore the significance of the event, Jay walked out from behind a pointlessly animated assemblage of curtains to a sustained ovation. The host accepted the audience’s embrace with obvious appreciation but also a bit of self-deprecation. When he finally calmed the reception down, he delivered his first line:
“Let’s see how you all feel in 30 years!”
It’s actually been 32; but Ok, let’s do it.
What can we tell about Leno and NBC and the sturm und drang of late-night history set off by that long-ago first Tonight Show with Jay Leno?

After hustling for nearly two decades to build a career as an actor and stand-up comedian, Adam Ray has recently hit on an entirely new level of exposure. The person he has to thank for it, you might be surprised to hear, is none other than Dr. Phil.
For many a performer, Ray tells Deadline, the goal is to hone one’s craft until hitting on something “that’s yours” and yours alone. This is what he’s accomplished with Dr. Phil Live!, a digital series garnering huge attention online of later, in which he plays a heightened version of the popular daytime talk show host, with the help of detailed prosthetics.

Many people may not know this, but before Steven Seagal’s action movie heyday, he worked as a martial arts instructor and choreographer. Most famously, he was super agent Michael Ovitz’s martial arts teacher. Ovitz, notoriously, thought he could make anyone a movie star, and proved it by securing Steven Seagal a movie deal at Warner Bros, where he made Above the Law… and the rest was history.
Another guy Steven Seagal trained was Sean Connery, who was one of Ovitz’s first major clients. The agent paired Connery up with Seagal to get him into shape for the unofficial James Bond movie, Never Say Never Again. Connery was fifty-two at the time and had a couple of fight sequences in the film, so Seagal was brought in to whip him into shape. One day, while sparring, Seagal broke Connery’s wrist. The urban legend is that Connery did something that made him angry,...

Public Outings and Ongoing Support Jay Leno and his wife Mavis, a pair married for nearly 44 years, recently made a heartwarming appearance at a Hollywood event. This outing comes just after a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge authorized Jay’s conservatorship over Mavis due to her progressing dementia. On the red carpet of the Netflix movie Unfrosted, Mavis shared with Et, I feel great, yeah! showing her enduring spirit despite her health challenges. Comedian Jay Leno and his wife, Mavis Leno, stepped out for a special evening at the Los Angeles premiere of Unfrosted. This marks their first public appearance since revealing Mavis’s dementia diagnosis.
The couple, who have been married for over four decades, were in good spirits as they spoke to Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet.
Mavis expressed her positive outlook and stated, “I feel great,” during the interview.
The movie’s premiere, directed by Jerry Seinfeld, provided a much-needed opportunity for entertainment, according to Leno. “Thought I’d come to something fun for a change,” he said. “Everything is so controversial. Just to come to a funny, silly movie ― it’s great. I think people will have a great time.”
The Lenos’ public outing comes as they privately navigate Mavis’s health challenges. In January, Leno filed for a conservatorship of their joint estate and cited his wife’s cognitive decline.

Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tart comedy Unfrosted debuted in Los Angeles on Tuesday, where its star-studded cast was also joined by a special guest heaping praise on the film.
Jay Leno — alongside wife Mavis — crashed The Hollywood Reporter‘s red carpet interview with Seinfeld, as he joked, “I’m so sick of these hard-hitting, controversial documentaries. Can’t somebody just make a comedy anymore? Everything is a teachable moment and, ‘Oh I learned this.’ I just want to come and laugh.”
Seinfeld teased, “Because you’re not smart enough to learn anything,” as the friends of 45 years laughed, and Leno declared that the movie “is exactly what America needs right now, it’s going to be a really funny movie.”

Jay Leno and his wife, Mavis Leno, appeared at the Unfrosted premiere in Los Angeles on Tuesday (April 30), their first public appearance since the comedian was granted conservatorship of the couple’s joint estate. As previously reported, Jay filed for a conservatorship in January amid his wife’s battle with advanced dementia. The conservatorship, which allows Jay to oversee Mavis’ estate and finances (not her person), was granted in early April. On Tuesday evening, Mavis joined her husband of 44 years at the red carpet premiere of Jerry Seinfeld‘s new Netflix movie, Unfrosted, which lands on the streamer on Friday, May 3. The annual White House Correspondents Dinner may be dubbed the inside-the-beltway “Nerd Prom” in some circles. Still, this year’s soirée, which took place on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, was the hottest ticket in the nation’s capital — maybe the entire nation — as President Joe Biden and the First Lady sat alongside the Hollywood elite and senior government officials mingled with actors, rappers and rockers.
They were all gathered to toast free speech and watch the president and Saturday Night Live Colin Jost roast Donald Trump, the state of the media, and in a common theme of the night, the commander-in-chief’s age.
Before the event began, hundreds of protesters had gathered outside the Hilton in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington to confront attendees and encourage journalists to boycott the event. The demonstrators shouted about the deaths of journalists in Gaza as they covered the ongoing conflict...

The annual 2024 White House Correspondents’ Dinner is set for Saturday at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.

President Joe Biden is also set to be in attendance, as well as First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
“Colin Jost knows how to make Saturday nights funny, and I am thrilled Colin will be live from the nation’s capital as the headline entertainer for this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” Kelly O’Donnell, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, previously said in a statement.

It was thanks in part to Arnold Schwarzenegger that the former publisher of the National Enquirer knew he could get in trouble for the tabloid’s catch-and-kill policy and buying off salacious stories about Donald Trump.
Over objections from Trump’s defense team, ex-American Media CEO David Pecker poignantly Thursday told the judge, jurors, Trump himself and everyone else in a packed Manhattan courtroom he was aware he was violating election law in 2016 when he secretly bought Playboy playmate Karen McDougal’s story of an affair with Trump for $150,000. Admitting the purchase was entirely to kill the story, Pecker said that the primary purpose behind the payoff and others in a similar vein was to help the then-Celebrity Apprentice host’s presidential campaign.
Such tactics were nothing new for Pecker.

Late-night talk shows were like home when I was a teenager. Social anxieties could disappear, bullies were non-existent, and the humorous, non-consequential words of the hosts would calm me down after a stressful day at school. The comedians who took over TV after 11:35 Pm welcomed me into a universe I belonged to, a complete contrast from the social outcasting I felt in the classroom walls. I could live vicariously through their jokes and joyful scenarios in which the audience cheered and clapped, and nobody’s confidence was shattered by a lousy joke.
Along with Craig Ferguson, Conan O’Brien was a nightly weekday highlight. Conan’s spastic impressions and self-deprecating pokes were a warm fire in front of the TV, a silly distraction for me and so many of his viewers who loved to gather around his aura every night on NBC and then TBS at the dawn of the decade.

Jimmy Fallon, host of NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, is about to celebrate his 10th anniversary fronting a franchise that first began with Steve Allen behind the desk in 1954, followed by Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien (and Jay Leno again) — and he’s keen to keep it going.
Speaking about Carson’s record as the longest-running (and most-identifiable) host of this seminal late-night show, Fallon said during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television event, “I’m gonna go, you guys want me? Let’s break the record, let’s go, let’s do 30 years!”

Fallon himself has already spent 25 years at NBC in different incarnations. He started on Saturday Night Live in 1998 (“thinking that’s the goal”) and has now “for more than half of my life been at the same building.”

As a one-time football great, O.J. Simpson’s initial forays in late-night TV were generally as a jovial guest, and even included a gig as host of Saturday Night Live on February 25, 1978 . But all of that changed in the summer of 1994, when Simpson became the prime suspect in the double-murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman.
Over the next year and a half, late-night hosts made a meal out of Simpson’s subsequent arrest and what was dubbed the “Trial of the Century,” which ended with the fallen athlete’s acquittal—a decision that all the “Dancing Itos” Jay Leno could have assembled would likely never have predicted.
Despite his acquittal, and the public’s obsession with all things O.J., no self-respecting late-night host seemed very eager to have the Juice come on and share his part of the story.

Jay Leno has been officially granted conservatorship of his wife, Mavis Leno, who has been grappling with a degenerative brain disease.
The 77-year-old Mavis has been diagnosed with advanced dementia, leading to moments where her recognition of her husband becomes fleeting, as stated by her medical professionals.
Leno, renowned for his tenure as the host of the Tonight Show, has been married to Mavis for over four decades. With Mavis’s health deteriorating due to Alzheimer’s, the most prevalent type of dementia, Jay initiated the conservatorship process in January.
The original petition outlined that Mavis has been experiencing a gradual decline in cognitive abilities and her sense of place and time over several years. While the precise time of her diagnosis remains undisclosed, Jay reportedly delayed pursuing conservatorship as a gesture of regard for his beloved wife.

Tuesday night saw something that, fourteen years ago, might have seemed impossible: Conan O’Brien returned to “The Tonight Show.” And he was greeted with a standing ovation.
He was there, ostensibly, to promote a forthcoming Max series in which he travels the world meeting fans. But he’d come a long way just to get to 30 Rockefeller Center in 2024, and the interview with current “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon functioned as a peace offering, or a marker of how much time has passed.
O’Brien, after all, exited the program under a cloud in 2010, after a much-followed period of corporate intrigue. Inheriting the show from Jay Leno, O’Brien was set up to fail when NBC programmed a prime-time Leno series, which bombed, as his lead-in five nights a week; O’Brien departed the show after only seven months, at which point Leno replaced him. Conan O’Brien returned to The Tonight Show last night, reflecting with host Jimmy Fallon about his time on NBC’s late-night shows. The comedian hosted Late Night for 16 seasons from 1993 to 2009, before briefly helming The Tonight Show from 2009 to 2010, when he was fired.

Conan O’Brien made his Tonight Show return on Tuesday, and he and host Jimmy Fallon reminisced about O’Brien’s time with NBC’s late-night shows.
The comedian hosted Late Night for 16 seasons, from 1993 to 2009 before his short tenure with The Tonight Show from 2009 to 2010.
“It’s weird to come back,” O’Brien told Fallon during his latest appearance. “I haven’t been in this building for such a long time, and I haven’t been on this floor in forever.”
He added, “I was here for 16 years doing the Late Night show before we went out to L.A. and right across the hall — all these memories came flooding back to me.” O’Brien later joked that it was strange seeing other sets built in what used to be his show’s studio.
Earlier during their conversation, Fallon also noted that O’Brien was his first-ever talk show appearance.

As Conan O’Brien Returns To ‘The Tonight Show’, He Reminisces About ‘Late Night’ Rather Than 11:30pm
Conan O’Brien returned to The Tonight Show for the first time as a guest since he left the NBC show.
However, the comedian largely dodged talking about his stint on the 11:30pm show. O’Brien hosted the between June 2009 and January 2010 but was replaced by Jay Leno’s return to the show.
He briefly mentioned it at the top of his appearance following a standing ovation from the audience. “I know you meant well, but I had The Tonight Show for ten minutes and you ate into my time,” he joked.
O’Brien wasn’t pressed by host Jimmy Fallon about his time on The Tonight Show.
He did, however, reminisce about his time hosting at 12:30am. O’Brien hosted Late Night between 1993 and 2009.

As a solar eclipse moved across the U.S., Taylor Swift teased what some are speculating to be potential lyrics on social media ahead of her new album, The Tortured Poets Department. In her Instagram Story, Swift shared a black-and-white video of a typewriter punching the words, “Crowd goes wild at her fingertips, half moonshine, full eclipse,” along with pre-order link.
The typed text created an online frenzy, as people stepped outside to watch the moon block the face of the sun. The hint to her new album is typical of Swift,...

Taylor Swift is dropping her new album, The Tortured Poets Department on April 19, which is 13 days from now, and also incidentally a number, which carries a lot of significance for her.
She detailed the reason the number has been a lucky one for her back in 2009 when speaking with Jay Leno: “I was born on the 13th. I turned 13 on Friday the 13th. My first album went gold in 13 weeks. Also, my first song that ever went Number One, it had a 13-second intro, and I didn’t do it on purpose,...

Three former late-night stars — or, apparently, “kings” — are sharing a stage together later this year.
Jay Leno, Craig Ferguson, and Arsenio Hall are presenting a night of standup that’s being billed as the “Kings of Late Night.” The trio will perform at the retro-themed San Diego County Fair on June 21, and again at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA, on September 28.
While some might hesitate to call anyone but Johnny Carson a “king” of the genre, the three comics are certainly some of the biggest names in late-night history.
Leno helmed NBC’s Tonight Show twice — from 1992-2009, and again from 2010-2014. Ferguson hosted the CBS 12:30 franchise The Late Late Show from 2005-2014, and Hall’s syndicated Arsenio Hall Show ran from 1989-1994, with a short-lived revival between 2013-2014.
While there are only two dates currently on the books, we could see more, as the three comics have hit the road together before.

Conan O’Brien is making his return to The Tonight Show after being fired as the replacement host years ago.
If you don’t know the history, in 2009, Jay Leno decided to end his run as host of the Tonight Show to take on a new late night talk show on NBC in an earlier time slot. NBC then named Conan as Jay‘s replacement on The Tonight Show. Both shows did not receive the ratings NBC had hoped for. Conan was then let go as The Tonight Show host and Jay Leno was brought back to host just a few months later in March of 2010.

Now, for the first time in 14 years, Conan is returning to The Tonight Show. He’ll appear on the April 9 episode of the show, now hosted by Jimmy Fallon. Conan will be promoting his Max series Conan O’Brien Must Go.

While many of us know how the story goes, here’s a quick recap for those who may have forgotten: After debuting on The Tonight Show in June 2009, Conan O’Brien was abruptly ousted from his dream job after being on air for a brief seven months. He was unceremoniously replaced by Jay Leno in January 2010 (which Rolling Stone likened at the time as the comedy-world equivalent of being jilted at the altar for a Jersey Shore cast member) and hasn’t set foot on the NBC franchise’s stage since.

Conan O’Brien has set a return to “The Tonight Show,” slotting a guest appearance for next week’s April 9 broadcast. The occasion will mark the comedian and former late night host’s first time back on the program since his acrimonious exit from NBC in 2010, in which he was replaced by Jay Leno as the show’s host following a seven-month tenure.
O’Brien is on the publicity circuit to promote his coming travelogue series, “Conan O’Brien Must Go.” The show marks O’Brien’s first television project since his TBS late night show “Conan” ended in 2021 after 11 seasons on the air. “Conan O’Brien Must Go” debuts on Max on April 18.
Under the tenure of Jimmy Fallon, who has been helming “The Tonight Show” for more than 10 years, the program has established a pattern of welcoming back previous NBC deserters. In 2014, Fallon welcomed Joan Rivers as a guest, who had...

Conan O’Brien is set to make his first appearance as a guest on The Tonight Show since his unceremonious departure.
The comedian hosted The Tonight Show between June 2009 and January 2010 but was replaced by Jay Leno’s return to the show after his short-lived primetime failure.
O’Brien will now be a guest on Jimmy Fallon’s version of the show on April 9, to promote his long-in-the-works travelogue, Conan O’Brien Must Go, which debuts on Max on April 18. Other guests on that show include Nicole Richie and musical guest Benson Boone.
The former Conan host – he hosted that show between 2010 and 2021 – has, however, made a short video appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show before. In 2018, he appeared in a skit that the former SNL star and The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert did.

New court documents reveal that Jay Leno‘s wife, Mavis, is facing an “advanced” form of dementia and “sometimes does not know her husband nor her date of birth.” The update comes after the legendary talk show host filed for a conservatorship over his wife in January. As previously reported, Leno is seeking control of Mavis’ estate and finances, not her person. This is to “establish a living trust… that ensures [Mavis] has managed assets sufficient to provide her with future care” should Leno die before her. In new court documents filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court and obtained by Entertainment Weekly, Mavis’ court-appointed legal counsel, Ronald Ostrin, shared details of his findings during his investigation into Leno’s bid for conservatorship. Ostrin wrote that neurologist Dr. Hart Cohen claims that Mavis “sometimes does not know her husband, Jay, nor her date of birth.” In addition, she often has...

Perhaps you saw the headline: “Jay Leno Just Signed a $1 Billion Deal with CBS for a Late Night Show Opposite to Jimmy Kimmel.”
Over the weekend, a Facebook post with that headline received more than 46,000 likes. It was not/is not true.
Turns out the story originated on a “satire” site called esspots earlier in March. Snopes debunked the story then, and posted an update earlier today.
True or not, commenters on the Facebook post heralded the news.
“I used to enjoy late night comedy. Then it became political and not very funny. Haven’t watched in years. If Jay comes back, I’m all in,” wrote one.
“Kimmel is so anti-American!” wrote another.
The first tip off that the headline was suspect should have been that $1 billion figure, but it’s not the first time a story like this has made the rounds.

It’s difficult to put into context for those who weren’t there just how big of a star David Letterman was in March of 1994. He had just left NBC nine months earlier—where he’d reigned tall at 12:30 Am for 11 years—to move up to 11:30 Pm at CBS as host of The Late Show. This was a franchise created especially for him, and it made him the highest paid host in late-night history. He was at the height of his powers as a broadcaster, and at this point was number one in the ratings against Jay Leno’s Tonight Show. Being a guest on his show was a rite of passage, much as it had been when Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show. If you were sitting opposite David Letterman, you knew you had made it to the big time.

Fifteen years ago this week, history was made when a sitting U.S. President appeared on a late-night talk show for the first time. Given how synonymous late-night TV and politics can be, it may surprise you that this didn’t occur before March 19, 2009, when then-President Barack Obama appeared on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show as his sole guest of the night (aside from a musical performance by Garth Brooks).
Sure, presidential candidates have made the rounds on talk shows—and sketch shows—for decades, but sitting down for an interview on a late-night show didn’t always seem like an appropriate move for a commander-in-chief. Once in office, they’re bound to have serious pressing questions to answer—topics that are more appropriately addressed on a nightly newscast than a chat show, where it’s less likely to generate an analytical discussion with the host.
That’s probably why...

Debuting in 1993, Late Night with Conan O’Brien witnessed many iconic bits and gas, but arguably the best creation to emerge from the show was Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. Puppeteered by Robert Smigel, which made its first appearance in 1997, the cigar-chomping dog is rude and crude to everyone and everything, but most importantly, he’s devastatingly funny.
From attacking Star Wars fans to Bon Jovi, it doesn’t matter who you are, Triumph roasts everyone equally, and unluckily, even the Late Night Host wasn’t immune from his insults.

Ahead of a jam-packed Summer Olympics schedule, NBC has opted to cancel not one but two Peacock reality shows.
For most TV shows, getting past that first season is usually a good sign for potential staying power. First reported by Deadline, NBC has cancelled LA Fire & Rescue and Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge. Both reality shows premiered less than a year ago on Peacock. It appears that each show was cancelled in an attempt to make room for NBC’s coverage of the upcoming Paris Olympic Games, which begins on July 26. NBC will air the Olympics across its extensive family of networks.

One could legitimately argue that Amanda Bynes’ career served as an inspiration to child stars and actors alike. She established herself as one of Nickelodeon’s top talents in the early aughts, becoming a beloved child actor with her infectious personality and comedic skills.
Before starring in her own comedy series, The Amanda Show, Bynes shot to fame as a cast member on the popular children’s show All That, when she was just 13 years old. From then on, her reputation as the comedy teen queen continued to grow, and she started to be featured on magazine covers, and romantic comedies, and receive awards for her roles.

Editor’s note: 2024 marks 30 years since the original publication of “The Late Shift,” Bill Carter’s mind-bending chronicle of the behind-the-scenes power struggle to succeed Johnny Carson at his legendary Tonight show desk. The book was an instant bestseller, spawning an HBO movie of the same name and a 2010 follow-up, “The War for Late Night.” It also solidified Carter’s own reputation as “The King of Late Night Journalism.” Now the editor-at-large for LateNighter, we prevailed upon Bill to mark the book’s 30th with a little look-back.
