In previous articles, we have taken a look at stars of the past we would like to see make a comeback – and there are a lot of them! It was too hard to narrow it down to just a few, so now we’ve put together another list of 80s stars we want back, including a couple of Freddy victims, some 1980s beauties we miss, and a lady we’ve only seen twice on our screens.

This post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."
All right now, for all you boppers out there in /Film land — just how much movie is "John Wick: Chapter 4?" The answer is, "So, so much movie." For anyone looking at the film's runtime worried that it would be one simple story stretched out to a huge length, fret not — "Chapter 4" is an epic in the old-school sense of the term, hopping around the globe with its titular assassin (played once again with brooding intensity by Keanu Reeves) as he faces a series of new and increasingly difficult challenges.
The even more exciting icing on "Chapter 4's" gigantic action cake is that the film's third act could almost be its own self-contained movie. In a certain way, it already is: While the "Wick" films have traditionally made references and homages to a bevy of action cinema classics, the third act...

Warriors, come out and play-ay! Walter Hill, the prolific director of the 1979 cult classic, The Warriors, has sat down with The Hollywood Reporter recently to reflect on the making of the film. While the movie had opened dismally and to controversy, with the subject matter depicting gang warfare in New York at a time when crime was rampant, the film would go on to gain fans and become a cult hit which has since sprouted acclaim and even merchandising.
In his interview, Hill opens up about a scene in the movie where a character named Fox was killed off by getting thrown in front of an approaching subway train. He reveals that the scene was written in when he decided to let go of the actor, Thomas G. Waites, as he could not come to terms with him. Hill explains,
I feel very bad about the whole thing. We weren’t getting along very well.

Dismissed by some critics upon its initial release in 1979, The Warriors has only grown in admiration over the years, and is now considered one of the most imitated studio films of all time.
The film is credited with accelerating the rise of hip-hop culture, with its dialogue sampled by the likes of Ice Cube and Wu-Tang Clan. Its plot has inspired video games like Street Fighter. Its look has influenced everything from Michael Jackson videos to the movies of Jordan Peele.
But its writer-director Walter Hill says it could have been even more progressive and forward-looking had he included a group of gay gang members in the final cut.
The Warriors is based on Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel of the same name, but Hill took the material even further, applying a comic book sensibility to Yurick’s tale of New York tribalism, itself inspired by Xenophon’s Anabasis,...

I see lots of talk about Grease as we mourn the loss of Olivia-Newton John, but let’s not forget the real crowning achievement of her career…
Xanadu (1980)
Director: Robert Greenwald
Stars: Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly, Michael Beck
Is There A Plot?
A muse from the heavens comes to Earth to better our world by… [checks notes]… helping a struggling artist and an elderly rich man achieve their newfound dream of opening up a roller disco.
What’S The Damage?
Xanadu is a legendary bad movie for many reasons. Razzies creator John J. B. Wilson hated it so much that it led him to invent an official award show to celebrate the worst films of the year. It also has the designation of being screen legend Gene Kelly’s final film before his death, a rainbow-colored pimple on the ass of a renowned career. But, perhaps worst of all, Xanadu’s critical...

Olivia Newton-John, the multiple-Grammy-winning “Physical” and “I Honestly Love You” singer who went on to star in the beloved film musical Grease and later Xanadu, died today at her Southern California ranch, according to her official Facebook page. She was 73.
No cause of death was given, but Newton-John had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992. She later recovered, but the cancer recurred in 2013 and had metastasized to her lower back within four years. She long had been an activist against the disease.

A UK native who was raised in Australia, Newton-John began her career as a country singer but quickly crossed over to pop with the late-1973 hit “Let Me Be There.” It was the first of 15 Top 10 U.S. singles, including five No. 1s: “I Honestly Love You,” “Have You Never Been Mellow,” “You’re the One That I Want”, “Magic” (from the 1980 film Xanadu) and her biggest smash, “Physical.” The latter topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks and was the No. 1 single of 1981. It also spurred a physical-fitness craze, with its music video featuring Newton-John — in a period-defining outfit that included a leotard and headband — cavorting among hardbody models and chunky schlubs just trying to work off a few dozen extra pounds. Watch it below.
Newton-John won four Grammy Awards among a dozen nominations during her career: “Let Me Be There” took Best Country Performance, Female, in 1974; “I Honestly Love You” won Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, the following year; and “Heart Attack” took Video of the Year in 1983. She also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
.
She is best known to movie fans as the “Sandra Dee”-esque Sandy in Grease, the 1978 smash that remains among the top-grossing movie musicals of all time. Starring opposite Travolta in the Broadway adaptation, Newton-John sang the film’s country-flecked ballad “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and also duetted with Travolta and the company on “Summer Nights.” Both of those singles also made the U.S. Top 10. The film’s soundtrack spent 12 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has sold more than 8 million copies in the U.S. alone. It also spawned a No. 1 hit with Frankie Valli’s title track.

Grease was a sensation with it premiered in June 1978. With school scenes shot at Venice High and Marshall High in Los Angeles, it combined the era’s 1950s nostalgia with the burgeoning disco movement and made film stars of Newton-John and Travolta. They played star-crossed polar-opposite lovers who become the king and queen of Rydell High School, with Newton-John’s Sandy Dumbrowski getting an extreme makeover from the prim, ponytailed new girl at school into a leather-clad stunner near the end.
Grease was added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2020.
The film also helped fuel Newton-John’s stellar music career. Along with “Physical” and “Magic,” she also had post-Grease Top 10 hits with the disco-flecked “A Little More Love,” “Make a Move on Me,” “Heart Attack,” “Twist of Fate” and the title track from follow-up film, “Xanadu.” She had five Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart as well.

Released by Universal in August 1980, Xanadu coat-tailed the late-’70s roller disco craze, with Newton-John starring as Kira, a mysterious woman who falls in love with a struggling freelance artist (Michael Beck) living in Los Angeles. Despite co-starring Gene Kelly, the film was not a commercial hit — the skating fad had ebbed by the time it came out — but its soundtrack reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and went on to go double platinum. It also features Electric Light Orchestra and the Tubes.

Many of Newton-John’s solo albums also were hot sellers in the 1970s and early ’80s, with If You Love Me, Let Me Know topping the Billboard 200 in October 1974 and follow-up Have You Never Been Mellow doing the same just five months later. Two others made the U.S. Top 10: Totally Hot (1978) and Physical (1981).
Born on September 26, 1948, in Cambridge, England, Newton-John moved with her family to Melbourne, Australia, when she was a child. She began in music with a teenage pop group before winning an Australian TV talent show. She made her first single, “Till You Say You’ll Be Mine” in 1966 and toured English clubs as part of the duo Pat & Olivia with Pat Carroll. She later returned Down Under to continue her music career.
Newton-John is survived by her husband, John Easterling; daughter Chloe Lattanzi; her sister, Sarah Newton-John; her brother, Toby Newton-John; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made in her memory at ONJfoundation.org.

How has it taken this long to get a "The Warriors" board game? I know Walter Hill's 1979 action movie is a bit of a cult title and doesn't carry the cache of something like "The Thing" or "The Shining," which have previously gotten the tabletop treatment, but still! The whole set-up for the movie is essentially a board game itself.
One group of hoodlums has to traverse the boroughs of New York and each area has a unique hostile gang wanting to kill them. The film starred Michael Beck, James Remar, David Patrick Kelly and the great Lynne Thigpen (who plays essentially just a set of...

If you’ve ever watched The Warriors then you know who Michael Beck is, but if you don’t remember much of his career after that it’s not worth feeling that bad since while he did go on to continue his career for a while, he took a final bow in 2015 and has apparently retired or has at least kept his distance from the camera for the last five years. He did step away back in 2005 but came back for a short time in 2015 before bowing out again. Considering that his career started back in the 70s it’s definitely

The AppleThe musical possesses a unique form of power rarely afforded to other Hollywood genres. In the words of film scholar Rick Altman, “The musical invites us to forget familiar notions of plot, psychological motivation, and causal relationships.” In contrast to other commercial genres, the musical is almost one-of-a-kind in its ability to arrest time and space, to suspend disbelief, to defy our lived understanding of human relationships and even the very conventions of filmgoing. In what other mainstream genre can fictional characters get away with looking into the camera lens so often? Dramatic logic is replaced in the Hollywood musical by spectacle and raw emotional appeal, with singing as the defining device for such purely cinematic priorities. But what happens to the musical when singing is taken out of it? This was the conundrum of the short-lived disco musical, a sub-genre that ended as soon as it began.Popular...

There’s nothing like a good mystery, and HBO’s Blackout (1985) has a central premise that’s hard to deny: You survive a car crash, but have no memory of who you were before. Until, 7 years later, someone shows up and insinuates that you were a man who murdered his entire family and then fled. Now, could you go about your life, or would you want to know the truth? And if you were a killer, would that impulse return?
HBO’s original programming was still in its infancy, so the film, which debuted on Sunday, July 28th, plays as a barely more graphic version of a network offering, which is fine anyway; Blackout offers enough story and characterization to diminish any desire for extra blood or sleaze.
Once more, to our faux TV Guide:

Reimagining the five boroughs as a graffiti-coated war zone, Walter Hill's 1979 cult classic The Warriors made stars out of a group of unknowns and minted a confirmed midnight-movie hit. Decades later, diehard fans still congregate to quote dialogue and celebrate this punk artifact on Coney Island – and in a new exclusive video, Rolling Stone sat down with original Warriors Cleon, Swan, Vermin, Cochise, and more to look back on the film's legacy as it nears the 40-year mark.

That’s according to Deadline, confirming that the hour-long drama series will offer a new, seralized spin on Walter Hill’s cult classic that released all the way back in 1979 – itself a big-screen take on Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel of the same name. It.s been 36 years since The Warriors hit theaters and became an iconic cult classic. The film followed a wrongfully accused gang from Coney Island as they made their way through various hostile neighborhoods of New York. Now, some of the original members of the cast have reunited for one last subway ride. Check the video of their heartwarming reunion below. Produced by Rolling Stone, the video shows the actors Michael Beck (Swan), David Harris (Cochise), Terry Michos (Vermin), Dorsey Wright (Cleon), and Thomas G. The Warriors is a Coney Island tradition, and a bunch of the original cast members got together for a "Last Subway Ride" reunion event on September 13. Rolling Stone joined the cast 37 years later, including Michael Beck (Swan), David Harris (Cochise), Dorsey Wright (Cleon), Terry Michos (Vermin), and Thomas G. Waites (Fox), as they took the familiar path on the Coney Island–bound Q train. "These subways are different than they were in 1978," said Beck, head warrior in charge. It's not too late for a sexagenarian reboot!

The cast of The Warriors have reunited 36 years after the release of the cult classic.
Stars Michael Beck (boss-warrior Swan), David Harris (Cochise), Dorsey Wright (Cleon), Terry Michos (Vermin) and Thomas G Waites (Fox) jumped on the Q Train to recreate their final subway ride home to Coney Island.
Walter Hill's 1979 film centres on a street gang falsely blamed for the death of Gramercy Riffs leader Cyrus. They must find a way through the violent streets of Manhattan and the Bronx to get home.
The cast returned to Coney Island on September 13 for a fan-organised celebration for the film. The event saw one fan journey in from Scotland, while kids were spotted dressed up like the Baseball Furies gang.
"These subways are different than they were in 1978," Beck told Rolling Stone.
"I just love being here with all the fans. I see kids coming here, 8 years old, and I go,...

"These subways are different than they were in 1978," actor Michael Beck, who played the head-Warrior-in-charge Swan in the film, told Rolling Stone on the voyage to the Boardwalk.

The Warriors screens this Friday and Saturday nights (June 6th and 7th) at midnight at the Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at the Tivoli’ Midnight series.
Walter Hill stylized 1979 modern urban-fantasy adventure The Warriors has overcome the test of time and is now a cult classic – and not without a good reason. In this installment of Junkfood Cinema, Cargill and I discuss one of our favorite under-appreciated actors: Michael Beck. For a very brief period of time, Beck was a rising star in Hollywood. His breakout performance in The Warriors placed him firmly on the map, only to see his career stall a mere three years later thanks to the notorious bomb that was Xanadu. Still, during his all-too-short heyday, Beck appeared in some fantastic cult fare including Hal Needham’s Megaforce and the often heralded (at least on this show) Battletruck. We hope you enjoy this retrosBECKtive. You should follow Brian (@Briguysalisbury), Cargill (@Massawyrm), and the show (@Junkfoodcinema). This news is tearing me apart! Apparently James Franco is set to produce a movie based on Greg Sestero‘s book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside the Room, a memoir about Sestero’s acting gig in the 2003 cult classic — and touted “worst movie of all time” — The Room. Franco will star in the project too, presumably as The Room‘s director and star Tommy Wiseau, and he’ll be camping it up alongside Seth Rogen and his brother Dave Franco, who will probably play Sestero. Sigh, Dave Franco. Nudity is always a good option for him!

Oh the 80s, how I love thee so… From the fashion and the music to the video games and the movies. And oh, what movies! From the decades big blockbusters to the direct-to-vhs dross that clogged video store shelves I loves me some 80s flicks. So when two of the decades most infamous flicks get re-released on DVD I just knew I had to check them out… First up, Megaforce!
I’ll admit, Megaforce passed me by back in the day, during the 80s I was all about the cheesy horror and anything Star Wars-esque. But, like any movie fan, the film’s reputation had not gone unnoticed by me… The film stars Barry Bostwick as Ace Hunter, leader of a mercenary army force who uphold peace,...

Welcome to another installment of Streaming for Your Pleasure where I highlight films that are currently streaming on Netflix. In this installment I am focusing on action movies. Sol Yurick, a novelist whose most well-known work is the 1965 book "The Warriors," has passed away at the age of 87. His daughter Susanna tells the New York Times it was due to complications of lung cancer.
Yurick was born in Manhattan in 1925. He received a degree in English from New York University and later a master's in English from Brooklyn College. Before gaining fame for "The Warriors," Yurick worked as an investigator for the New York City Department of Welfare.
He wrote in the introduction to a 2003 edition of "The Warriors," which recasts a Greek battle tale with warring New York gangs, "Some of the children of these [welfar] families were what was then called juvenile delinquents. Many of them belonged to fighting gangs. Some of these gangs numbered in the hundreds; they were veritable armies. This social phenomenon was viewed, on the one hand, as the invasion of the barbarians,...

Even though everyone pretty much knows him as the ghostly and caring father of "Dexter," James Remar will always be Ajax from The Warriors to us. Given that Michael Beck's (Swan) career ended in Xanadu, we all now know who the real Warchief was.
According to Variety, Remar (pictured) has joined the cast of Mandalay Pictures’ Horns. Daniel Radcliffe, Max Minghella, Juno Temple, Joe Anderson and Kelli Garner also star, with Alexandre Aja helming.
Horns is being co-produced and financed by Riza Aziz and Joey McFarland’s Los Angeles-based film production, finance, and international sales company Red Granite Pictures. Red Granite will co-produce the film with Mandalay Pictures. Red Granite Pictures’ international sales arm (Red Granite International), led by Danny Dimbort and Christian Mercuri, is handling foreign sales for the film.

Mother's Day (1980) Anchor Bay Blu-ray & DVD Available Now
Though the company had yet to be formed, Mother’s Day was the first unofficial Troma film. Written and directed by Charles Kaufman (Loyd’s brother), it’s a violent, cheapjack revenge film with several of the patented Troma ingredients already in place. Uneasy comedic elements, amateur performances, sketchy scripting and aggressive misogyny abound. In spite of all this, Mother’s Day is also a fairly engrossing little exploitation film that seems to get better with age. Featuring the late, great Beatrice Pons as Mother Rose.
Special Features Include:
* Feature Length Audio Commentary with director Charles Kaufman and assistant art director Rex Piano
* Behind the Scenes of the Original Mother’s Day: includes Super 8 footage of screen tests and special effects (with Charles Kaufman commentary)

Having managed to get about five hours sleep I woke up ready for the second day of the Fantastic Films Weekend ready for what would be my busiest day of film watching. With the likes of The Toxic Avenger, Coraline 3D and another screen talk to get through my body wanted me to go to bed but I got up anyway and made my way back knowing already that The Toxic Avenger was the dreaded UK Theatrical Cut, meaning it would be torn to shred.
The Toxic Avenger
I think the knowledge that this was the shredded version of The Toxic Avenger actually made it more fun actually. For years I’ve had the region one DVD version of The Toxic Avenger, which of course is the uncut version. This meant I was interested to see what the differences would be between the two.

Once upon a time I wrote a column called "Bad Movies We Love," and I feel close enough to you to admit that -- actually? -- I don't love bad movies. I would rather watch something good, weirdly. I'm sensitive when it comes to reserving time for woefully bad cinema, and that's why I want to help kick off your summer with the essential gay stinkbombs. Summer is the best time to gather your friends at 11 a.m. on a Saturday, gather around the thespian sorcery of Elizabeth Berkley, and cry, cry, and laugh until you're whole. Let's celebrate the worst of the best of the worst!

After two missed shots, Sylvester Stallone and director Walter Hill will finally set their sights together on "Headshot."
Ain’t It Cool News received a direct message from Stallone that he's officially secured Hill to direct his upcoming film "Headshot." The cop and hitman team-up pic is a long time coming for this pair of filmmakers: Stallone said that he was close to working with Hill on two of the director’s previous films, 1982’s “48 Hrs.” and 1978’s “The Driver.” Although he might not be a widely-known name for modern moviegoers, Hill’s work in the '70s and '80s made him one of the most respected directors of action films and the late-20th Century revival of the Western. He's worked with some of Hollywood’s greatest action stars -- McQueen, Bronson, Schwarzenegger, Willis, Rourke, Snipes -- with Stallone being one of the few exceptions.

Wakefield, Nc - Deep in the woods of Raleigh, I felt the ghost of Glenn Gould. He’s been dead since 1982, but there he was at a grand piano playing the first of Bach’s The Goldberg Variations.
His body wasn’t hunched over the keyboard on his collapsible chair. He wasn’t humming away as he played. But it was unmistakably Gould. The keys of the Yamaha Dcfiiiapro were stuck in his iconic way. His music filled the classical music concert hall covered in maple and cherry wood.
How can this be? Who conjured the Canadian classical music genius? Zenph Sound Innovations figured a way to make dead fingers play. This isn’t merely a piano roll, fake stereo treatment or a new noise reduction that goes beyond Dolby.
There is no other way to describe the technological miracle except in spiritual terms. This is the closest we’ll...

When deciding on a movie to watch, you are hard pressed to go wrong when picking a film adorned with the title of “Roger Corman Cult Classics” right at the top of the case.
The genuine geniuses over at Shout! Factory have been slowly but surely knocking it out of the ballpark with each subsequent release of this massively expansive set, detailing cult classics like Death Race 2000, and rarely seen gems like Galaxy Of Terror.
The series has produced DVDs that not only have fantastic transfers, but also rather expansive special features, ranging from hour long documentaries, to interviews with Corman himself.
However, Shout! Factory may have finally hit a little bump in the road.
The newest release in the ongoing series, a special double feature featuring the sci-fi films Deathsport and Battle Truck (a.k.a. the best title in film history), aren’t truly bad releases. That said,...

With Piranha and Humanoids from the Deep getting all the love lately in the news, we'd be remiss if we did not mention two other Corman cult classics that are poised to make their special edition double-feature DVD debut from Shout! Factory.
From the Press Release:
Brace yourself for twice the fun, twice the adrenaline rush, and twice the traction as Shout! Factory, in association with New Horizons Picture Corporation, is set to release a dynamic duo of Roger Corman classics on one double-feature collector’s edition DVD. It should come as no surprise to learn that there will be a new DVD of the original Piranha to go along with this summer's 3-D remake; that sort of release is nothing new, especially if you're a horror fan. But what is particularly exciting, provided you're a fan of horror, schlock, and/or Roger Corman in general, is this: In just a few months the fine folks at Shout! Factory will be unleashing all sorts of Cormanized craziness.
In April we'll get a long-awaited re-issue of Joe Dante's Piranha, which is arguably one of Corman's finest productions -- even if it is a thinly-veiled Jaws wannabe. Your choice of standard special edition or blu-ray. Yes, that's right: Piranha on blu-ray. Pinch me. But don't pinch yet. It gets better: In the following weeks Shout! Factory will also dole out Humanoids from the Deep (yes!), the beloved Death Race 2000 and its follow-up Deathsport,...

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 The Warriors – no other movie of the Seventies captured New York City quite like this gritty, visceral, gang drama did when it premiered in February of 1979, making The Big Apple look not only rotten to the core, but also possibly – gloriously -- like the most dangerous city in the world. For those of you who remember the movie when it first premiered in '79, it made a lasting impact that was both exhilirating and terrifying, summed up in one of the most widely quoted lines in movie history: Warriors.....come out and plaaaayeeeaaaayyy!

Xanadu (1980) A million lights are dancing and there you are: A shooting star! Synopsis Frustrated artist Sonny Malone (Michael Beck) is stuck in a soul-sucking corporate job. He meets Kira (Olivia Newton-John), a Greek muse sent to Earth to encourage him to chase his dream to build a really awesome roller disco. She introduces him to retired big-band leader Danny Macguire (Gene Kelly), who's got the moves and the money to make it all happen. But the plan goes awry when mortal Sonny and divine Kira fall in love. Why We Love It For the better part of two decades, admitting you loved Xanadu was a sure-fire way to get a surprise kick-in-the-nuts from the nearest film snob. At least, that was true for guys. If you were a girl, said film snobs settled for a stiff right jab to your ovaries. Why the hostility? Well, pretty much since its release, Xanadu...

I think we can all agree that the 1980 roller-disco romance Xanadu isn't exactly what most people would call the height of film making achievement. But as a 5-year-old girl (yeah, I watched movies at a really young age -- strange, I know), it was possibly the best thing I had ever seen. The story of a young artist named Sonny (played by Michael Beck) slaving away recreating album covers (is that even a job?) and the muse who inspires him to pack it in to start the roller disco of his dreams may have been a huge success on the Billboard charts, but the film barely broke even at the box-office -- my god, the spandex budget alone would have bankrupted the production. Of course, none of that mattered to me as I watched Olivia Newton-John glide across the floor to the tunes of E.L.O.
