Caleb Carr, whose bestselling 1994 novel The Alienist made the author a household name who saw the book adapted into a 10-episode limited series on TNT, died of cancer Thursday at his home in Cherry Plains, New York. He was 68.
His death was announced by his brother Ethan Carr to The New York Times.
Carr was born on August 2, 1955, into a New York City family haunted by violence and abuse: His father was Lucien Carr, a Beat Generation journalist convicted of manslaughter for the 1944 killing of what today would be deemed a sexual predator. The fatal stabbing, which made headlines and history not least because Lucien’s friend and Columbia University classmate Jack Kerouac helped dispose of the knife, was depicted in the 2013 film Kill Your Darlings starring Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan.
Caleb Carr would later say that the incident, along his own childhood abuse at the hands of his father,...

British authorities have granted Julian Assange leave to appeal his U.S. extradition order in a victory for the WikiLeaks founder amid his ongoing legal battle.
The two U.K. judges deferred a decision in March on whether Assange, who is hoping to avoid being prosecuted in the States over espionage charges, could take his case to another appeal hearing.
The 52-year-old had been granted an appeal only if the Biden administration was unable to provide the court with suitable assurances, including that he is ensured freedom of speech protections and will not receive the death penalty.
The decision follows a British court ruling in April 2022 that Assange could be sent to the U.S. That ruling came after a legal battle that went all the way to the U.K. Supreme Court. Assange’s appeal was his only remaining legal avenue in the U.K. justice system.

A24 picks up the new film from Ruben Ostlund, the director of Triangle Of Sadness – and Kirsten Dunst and Keanu Reeves lead the cast.
We’d imagine that one of the most coveted projects to go to market at Cannes this week is Ruben Östlund’s follow-up to the critically celebrated 202 film, Triangle Of Sadness. It’s called The Entertainment System Is Down, it boasts a glorious premise, an admired director and a leading trio of Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl and Keanu Reeves. Oh, and let’s not forget the giant plane that the production bought before it even found a studio backer.
Whilst studio backing of some sort was never really in doubt given the star power that Östlund has attached to the project, Östlund will likely be particularly happy to have A24 as a partner for the US rights, given that this looks to be one of the...

A24 acquired the U.S. rights to Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down this weekend.
The eight-figure deal gives A24 U.S. distribution rights to what will be the Swedish film director’s second English-language movie, after 2022’s Triangle of Sadness. The latter won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, which marked Östlund’s second time taking home the prize after 2017’s The Square.
Like his last movie, The Entertainment System Is Down is also a social satire, this time set on a long-haul flight in which the entertainment system fails and passengers must figure out how else to fill their time. Östlund and his producer, Erik Hemmendorff, purchased a real Boeing 747 for the film.
The movie’s cast includes Keanu Reeves, Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Nicholas Braun and Samantha Morton, with Dunst and Brühl set to play a married couple.

At long last, Kathryn Bigelow is returning to filmmaking. After 2017’s Detroit, she was developing the David Koepp-scripted thriller Aurora for Netflix but has now moved on to another project for the company. The untitled thriller will unfold in real-time at the White House as a missile attack threatens the United States. THR reports former NBC News president Noah Oppenheim, who also wrote Jackie, scripted the project based on Bigelow’s idea. No additional details were revealed but with Netflix now greenlighting the project, here’s hoping it kicks off before the end of the year.

Ruben Östlund is checking in two new actors for his next feature. Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Brühl are the latest to join the Swedish filmmaker’s The Entertainment System Is Down.
The feature takes place on a long flight in which the onboard entertainment system fails, leaving the passengers to deal with their own boredom — to darkly comedic results. Östlund is shopping the package at Cannes, with Keanu Reeves already attached to star. The production has purchased a retired Boeing 747 for the shoot.
The filmmaker has stated he aspires for Entertainment System to cause the biggest walkout in Cannes history when it inevitably plays at the fest. Östlund famously included a lengthy vomiting scene in Triangle of Sadness, the 2022 Palm d’Or winner that skewered 1 percent culture amid the backdrop of yachting for the ultra wealthy. One of the things that makes mystery and crime TV series so popular is the way the viewer usually solves the same mysteries that the main character does. Those who have watched through all the possible shows within this realm set in the modern day may want to take on yet another challenge and try to solve the crimes without having access to all the technology.

The story of the rivalry between F1 aces James Hunt and Niki Lauda is given a glossy big screen retelling in Ron Howard's film. Written by Peter Morgan, it's no surprise that the writer of Frost/Nixon and The Queen puts psychology to the fore and amps up the win-at-any-costs mentality of Lauda, in particular - something that led the driver to have a horrific accident. Howard's action on the racing circuit does the job but it's Lauda's battle back from the accident that really holds the interest and Daniel Bruhl, who can be a bit hit and miss in terms of performances, is on the top of his game as the driven Austrian. Chris Hemsworth puts in a solid supporting performance, although he mainly leans into the established playboy image of the English sportsman.

Chris Hemsworth is one of the most respected and well-known faces in Hollywood. Through his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as the Extraction films, he has gained a lot of attention in the film industry. Despite this, there is one fact that is undeniable; he has not been seen in many challenging roles for him as an actor.
Chris Hemsworth in Thor: The Dark World
While the characters that he played certainly require a huge level of physical dedication, his emotional range has rarely been taken out for a spin by directors. This is a fact that seems to bother the actor, as he spoke about it during a recent interview.
It would seem that there was one movie that Hemsworth thought would change his image in Hollywood. Unfortunately, this was not the case.

Marvel Studios' The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is now available on 4K Uhd and Blu-ray Steelbook, and IGN has shared a deleted scene from the first episode of the Disney+ series.
Titled "Flight Lesson," the sequence picks up after Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) gives his speech at a ceremony where Captain America's shield is being put on display at a museum. Wilson still has some reservations about taking up the mantle that was passed to him by Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in Avengers: Endgame, and speaks to Col. James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) about it.
Wilson notes that his former teammate appears to be fully recovered from the accident which left him almost paralysed in Civil War, and Rhodey says he doesn't "need the hardware" any more thanks to a new procedure. Sam then apologizes for his part in what happened, and Rhodey assures his friend that there are no hard feelings.

Between shows like “Halston,” “The New Look,” “The Collection,” and Ridley Scott’s movie “House Of Gucci,” stories about the fashion empire seem to be on the neverending rise. Exclusive: Iconic British driver James Hunt is the subject of a feature doc from Deep Fusion Films.
British production house Deep Fusion has entered into a creative partnership with the James Hunt Estate on the production of Hunt: We Need to Talk About James, a 90-minute film that will offer “an unprecedentedly intimate look at the life and legacy of the man who helped define the glamour and danger of Formula 1, both on and off the track.”
Hunt had a well-publicized reputation as a playboy and adrenaline junkie, and was considered a golden boy of motorsports during his seven-year Formula 1 career, which culminated in him winning the 1976 World Championship in a dramatic final race.
While his personality and attitude made him hugely popular with the public and a familiar face in newspapers, his ‘live fast, die young’ approach was less well received by Formula 1’s establishment, who...

France’s first lady, Brigitte Macron, will be the subject of a biopic series produced by French mini-major Gaumont.
The six-part show is being penned by Bénédicte Charles and Olivier Pouponneau, who previously teamed on the thriller series “J’ai menti.”
Titled “Brigitte, une femme libre”, the series will chart the life of French President Emmanuel Macron’s wife. Gaumont is keeping the plot of the show under wraps and will be announcing the cast in the next few weeks.
Brigitte Macron’s life story surely provides plenty of material for a TV series. She met Emmanuel Macron while teaching theater at the Catholic high school Providence in Amiens. Macron was then 15 years old, while she was 40 and married with three children. In a recent interview with Paris Match, Brigitte Macron talked about her anxiety over their age gap, saying that her “head was in a mess” after she fell in...

Canneseries Festival to Remain Standalone Event in Spring Without MipTV; Canal+ to Return as Sponsor
While MipTV is relocating to London with a revamped format, Canneseries Festival is sticking to its guns and will remain as a standalone event in the spring on the Croisette.
Benoit Louvet, the managing director of Canneseries, told Variety in an exclusive interview that the festival will return in 2025 on April 22-27 with its major partners, the city of Cannes, the region Paca and the Vivendi-owned pay TV group Canal+. The sixth edition, which wrapped on April 10, hosted the world premieres of highly anticipated international shows including Disney+’s “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” and AppleTV+’s “Franklin,” with big stars such as Daniel Bruhl and Michael Douglas on the ground.
Canneseries has run alongside MipTV since its inception in 2019, and experimented as a standalone event once before, in the fall of 2020 after MipTV was canceled due to the pandemic.
