American actress Cassi Davis has been gracing screens since 1988. However, she’s prominently known for her roles as Ella Payne in Tyler Perry‘s House of Payne and its spin-off series, The Paynes. Featuring mainly in Perry’s Madea films, the actress has made quite a name for herself today. She has starred in various theater plays, including Madea’s Class Reunion and Love Thy Neighbor. Altogether, Davis has shown her mettle as a great actor and performer as a whole. But there are so many more sides to her than that. Here are a few interesting Cassi Davis facts to mull on.

If you’ve ever seen Tyler Perry’s House of Payne or The Paynes, you’ve probably already fallen in love with Cassi Davis. The talented actress has become a fan favorite in her role of Ella Payne. BET officially reopened the doors to Tyler Perry’s House of Payne on Wednesday with a family reunion eight years in the making.
Picking up nearly a decade after things left off, Wednesday’s two-part premiere found Malik (Larramie “Doc” Shaw) returning home from college with big news. So big, in fact, that it took nearly the entire night for him to spit it out. Calvin (Lance Gross) was the first to suspect that Malik’s girlfriend might be pregnant, offering his cousin this incredibly helpful piece of advice: “One thing you don’t want is a crazy baby mama.

Tyler Perry’s Madea will take one last bow on August 27, when a filmed version of the character’s final stage tour premieres on BET+.
The subscription streaming outlet announced the release date Wednesday for Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Farewell Play, which it bills as the “final stage run” for Madea. A press release said Perry, as Madea, “pulls together some of his audience’s favorite characters for a family gathering” in a performance lasting more than two hours. Perry is executive producer, directed and writer, in addition to his starring role.
Current events, including Covid-19, enter the scene. The live show was filmed in May, judging by a glimpse of the theater marquee in a promo for the special (watch it above). At one point, Madea separates two women who are about to hug each other. “Got that coronavirus going around!” she cracks.

The 40th Annual Razzie Award winners were announced on Monday, March 16 — two days after they were originally scheduled to be announced — so which film won Worst Picture: “Cats,” “The Fanatic,” “The Haunting of Sharon Tate,” “A Madea Family Funeral” or “Rambo: Last Blood”? Scroll down to see the complete list of winners, and watch the announcement above.
The musical “Cats” was adapted by Oscar winner Tom Hooper from the Tony Award-winning Broadway show, but its visuals creeped out critics and scared away audiences. The Razzie Awards ceremony, the Golden Raspberry Foundation’s annual skewering of the worst in cinema, was scheduled for tonight at the Barnsdall Theatre in Los Angeles. But the event is either “cancelled/postponed,” according to a statement from the producers.
The reason? “Because the Mayor of Los Angeles shut down all city-owned venues where more than 50 people could gather, including our site, The Barnsdall Theatre,” said the statement from John Wilson, co-founder of the awards. “Without a hall, we could not proceed with the show. But we are hoping to have something to disseminate by tonight – Perhaps even by what had been our original “curtain time” of 8 p.m. tonight. Obviously, if there is no live show, there is nothing to be streamed, either.”

The feline musical, based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage production, was not greeted nearly as well on the big screen as it was on Broadway, where it won seven Tonys including Best Musical for its original run. Despite its strong pedigree (including direction by “The King’s Speech” Oscar winner Tom Hooper), the film’s unsettling character design was greeted with bafflement at the first sign of the trailer, and then the film was released in December to negative reviews and poor box office.

The Razzie nominations are out and Cats, A Madea Family Funeral, and Rambo: Last Blood cleaned up.
The Golden Raspberry Foundation announced its picks for 2019’s worst achievements in film, a day before the Academy Awards honor the industry’s best.
Cats, which the Razzie folks described as a “widely derided feline flop,” picked up eight nods. A Madea Family Funeral and Rambo: Last Blood also received eight nominations. All three films landed in the worst picture category.
Tyler Perry, who wrote, produced, directed and played four roles in A Madea Family Funeral, received multiple nods — worst screenplay, worst actress, worst screen combo, and two worst supporting actor nominations.
The Razzie Award winners are usually announced the day before the Oscars. But according to the Golden Raspberry Foundation, the schedule was changed this year due to the Oscar ceremony being moved up. The Razzie Awards date will be announced later.

Although shunned by the Oscars, Cats racked up eight nominations to lead the 2020 Golden Raspberry Awards, a.k.a. the Razzies, the annual celebration of Hollywood’s worst.
The big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical, a box office and critical disaster, earned nods for Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Francesca Hayward), Worst Supporting Actress (both Judi Dench and Rebel WIlson), Worst Supporting Actor (James Corden), Worst Screen Combo (for “Any Two Half-Feline/Half-Human Hairball” plus Jason Derulo and “his CGI-neutered bulge”), Worst Director (Tom Hooper) and Worst Screenplay. Taylor Swift and Idris Elba escaped unscathed.

You knew this was coming. The 40th annual Golden Raspberry Awards dishonored the cinematic feline felony known as”Cats” with eight nominations, including one for no less than Dame Judi Dench herself. In fact, the organization even felt the need to describe her Old Deuteronomy as looking suspiciously similar to the Cowardly Lion from “The Wizard of Oz.” Somewhere, Bert Lahr is crying.
But incredibly, there were two other 2019 releases that proved egregious enough to also be pelted with eight nominations: Sylvester Stallone‘s “Rambo: Last Blood” and Tyler Perry‘s 12th and purportedly last appearance in a wig and dress, “A Medea Family Funeral.”
As per usual, the competitors for disgraced excellence were announced on the eve of the Academy Awards, which airs live on ABC on Sunday. The cheeky Razzies also had the nerve to slap around two other Oscars winners besides Dame Judi: Anne Hathaway, up for both “The Hustle” and “Serenity,...

Tom Hooper’s movie musical “Cats,” Sylvester Stallone’s “Rambo: Last Blood,” and Tyler Perry’s “A Madea Family Funeral” topped this year’s nominations list for the worst movies and performances of 2019, scoring eight nominations a piece.
Other “honorees” on this year’s list include the remake of “Hellboy” starring David Harbour, John Travolta in the thriller “The Fanatic” and the James Franco-directed period drama “Zeroville.”
The Razzies are now in their 40th year, and the group typically announces its nominees a day ahead of the Oscar nominations. I must open this review by simply stating the obvious that some critics might be overlooking: we may not be the audience for Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral. I know this because I saw the theater on a Saturday night in a multiplex and a good time was had by many. I’ve been a follower of Perry’s since 2005’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman, the first appearance by Madea in a theatrical release, and I truly believe the ex-stripper peaked around 2009’s Madea Goes To Jail, a work that highlights the racial injustice around mandatory minimum sentences.
In the latest outing, there is one scene that speaks to a very contemporary issue–police use of excessive force–that’s played rather disturbingly for laughs as an aggressive white cop with presumably extensive training expects Tyler Perry’s straight-laced and mild attorney Brian Simmons to follow...

The second weekend of “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” and the debut of “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral” are in a race too close to call for the box office crown, with each estimated to bring in about $25 million.
Should estimates hold, the number will mark a 53% decline for “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” which took in $55 million over its opening weekend. It’s totaled $291 million worldwide, including $74 million Stateside.
“Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral,” which is hitting 2,442 theaters, earned $9.2 million on Friday — above earlier tracking estimates and leading studios to reevaluate their weekend estimate to the $23 million to $25 million range.

Lord, hear our prayer: may the death of the world’s dearly beloved Madea not be in vain. And we thank you, Lord, that Tyler Perry shall never again don the grey wig and granny panties that inspire him to make incomprehensible jokes about disabled people, gay people, and old men objectifying younger women with wild abandon. Nevertheless: Say what you want about Tyler Perry, the prolific writer/director/performer is a master of character work — even totally unhinged and wildly problematic as those characters may be.
In “A Madea Family Funeral,” the twelfth and final installment to the blockbuster franchise on which he made his name, Perry pulls out all the old favorites: Pervy old man Joe, straight man Brian, a wiser, more beneficent Madea, and perhaps the most confounding, the paraplegic, Jheri curl-rocking Uncle Heathrow who can only speak through a vocoder. Tyler Perry’s “A Madea Family Funeral” is challenging “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” for the top spot at the domestic box office, early estimates showed on Friday.
The 11th installment of Lionsgate’s Madea franchise is performing at the top end of expectations, with an opening of about $23 million at 2,442 sites on Friday. “How to Train Your Dragon 3” was pegged to finish with about $24 million at 4,296 venues, a 56% decline that would give it a repeat victory at the North American box office and $90 million in its first 10 days.
Fox’s third weekend of “Alita: Battle Angel” is leading the rest of the pack with about $6 million at 3,096 locations. Focus Features’ launch of the thriller “Greta,” starring Isabelle Huppert and Chloe Grace Moretz, is in line with forecasts, with about $5 million at 2,409 venues. It’s lights out for Madea, the battle-ax sass queen with a criminal background created three decades ago and portrayed by Tyler Perry. That’s right. Perry, 49, says he will no longer put on a gray wig and wiggle his 6-foot-5 frame into the floral print dresses of the geriatric black woman who righteously goes whupass on any fool who gets in her way. A Madea Family Funeral is the 11th and final film to star the character most associated with Perry in a series of films, plays and books.

If writer-director-star Tyler Perry makes good on his threat to make “A Madea Family Funeral” the final film featuring his larger-than-life comedic heroine, then Madea will going out with a whimper and not with a bang, even by Perry standards.
When Madea and Uncle Joe (both played by Perry) and their friends Aunt Bam (Cassi Davis) and Hattie (Patrice Lovely) aren’t on screen to harass each other or the younger characters who so clearly need Madea’s wisdom and toughlove, the proceedings grind to a painful halt. And even when that quartet is around, the movie lumbers from one people-in-a-circle-sitting-around-talking scene to the next one. This is Perry’s 21st feature film, and 10th Madea vehicle, and his idea of directing still seems rooted in community theater.

“Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral,” the final film in director, writer and star Tyler Perry’s Madea franchise of films, earned $1.1 million in Thursday box office previews from 2,100 screens. It’s opening on approximately 2,400 screens this weekend.
“Madea Family Funeral” is the 10th (though it’s the character’s 11th appearance) and last film in the franchise that features Perry as the wise-cracking old woman Madea. The movie is being released by Lionsgate and is projected by independent trackers for an opening weekend between $18-20 million, which would place it among the lowest openings of the franchise.
The last “Madea” film, “Boo 2! A Madea Halloween,” grossed only $760,000 on its way to a $21.2 million opening back in October of 2017. The lowest opening weekend for any “Madea” film was 2013’s “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas,” which opened to only $16 million after earning just $278,000.

“A Madea Family Funeral” is the eleventh Tyler Perry film to showcase Perry in the role of the fire-breathing battle-axe-in-flowered-print-dresses inner-city drag matriarch Madea. Since Perry has said that it will be the last, it seems reasonable to assume that the funeral the movie pivots around might be Madea’s own. Is there anyone left for her to terrorize? Have no fear, though: Madea is alive and well (even if it seems a borderline spoiler to reveal that she doesn’t die). And I’m not convinced that her retirement will be any more permanent than a typical rock star’s. Also still kicking, I’m pleased to report, is her posse — the loose-cannon trio of geriatric relatives who’ve become her backup chorus in cussed infamy, though having been through more than a few Perry films themselves, their voices now come through just as loudly and riotously as Madea’s.

With “Captain Marvel” coming out next weekend, most studios are steering clear of releasing any films that could get caught in the Marvel movie’s undertow. The one studio that is putting out a new film this weekend is Lionsgate with “A Madea Family Funeral,” the tenth and final film in Tyler Perry’s long-running “Madea” series.
First imagined by Perry for his 1999 play “I Can Do Bad All By Myself,” Madea was brought to the big screen in 2005 with “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” a film made on a $5.5 million budget that grossed $50 million at the box office. Since then, Madea has been a dependable, low-budget moneymaker for Lionsgate, as the character has grossed a combined $547 million at the domestic box office.
But over the past few years, diminishing returns seem to have set in. The series peaked in 2009 with a $41 million opening and $90 million domestic total for “Madea Goes to Jail,...

Madea may be going to a funeral, but she’s the one fans will be saying goodbye to. Tyler Perry confirmed on Monday that “A Madea Family Funeral,” the eighth film in the franchise, will be its last.
In the film’s new trailer (along with a new poster), a joyous family reunion turns into a hilarious nightmare as Madea and the crew travel to backwoods Georgia and unexpectedly plan a funeral, which threatens to reveal sordid family secrets.
“The Bible say, yea though she walked in the valley with the shad-uh…with Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Bears, she feared no evil, because the Three Little Pigs was not around,” Madea says.

2017-10-22T09:59:06-07:00'Madea' Is the Week's Top Movie, 'Geostorm' Washes Out
Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween was the most-watched new movie in theaters this weekend, but it still fell far short of the opening-weekend take of its predecessor. The week's biggest bomb, however, was the pricey Geostorm, which took in only about 10 percent of its production budget.
Via The Hollywood Reporter.
Lionsgate and Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween had no trouble scaring up a No. 1 finish in its big-screen debut with $21.7 million from 2,388 theaters.
Overall, however, inclement weather was the big story at the box office, where the four other new nationwide offerings were swept away. The biggest casualty is Geostorm, the long-delayed environmental disaster epic from Warner Bros. and Skydance Media that opened to $13.3 million domestically after costing a reported $120 million to make before marketing.

Tyler Perry’s “Boo 2! A Madea Halloween” would be tone deaf, lacking in plot, and almost entirely humorless in any year. That is happens to arrive in theaters amid a cascade of sexual assault survivors sharing their stories about sexual assault doesn’t help its case. Perry has built his slice of a Hollywood empire profiting off the cheap laughter of the most insidious homophobic impulses in society — the ones that tell people there is nothing funnier than a man in a dress. “Boo!” is no exception.
Still, Perry is a versatile character comedian. Madea, the wise-cracking old lady he has played in drag for 15 years, is the movie’s central figure and also its funniest. Perry also plays her “creepy old man” brother, Joe, whose only breaks from slobbering over teenage girls are to call Madea “dude” or “man.” Perry’s discomfort with Madea’s drag is so palpable,...

"People got dead up there for real!" Oh boy, here we go again... Lionsgate has revealed the trailer for the newest Tyler Perry joint, another Madea comedy (sequel) titled Boo 2! A Madea Halloween. This is, obviously enough, a sequel to the goofy Halloween comedy Boo! A Madea Halloween release just last year. Tyler Perry not only returns to write and direct, but also star again as Madea (and Joe and Brian). The cast includes Cassi Davis, Patrice Lovely, Chandra Currelley, Yousef Erakat, Diamond White, Lexy Panterra, and Andre Hall. The plot involves Madea, Bam & Hattie going to a haunted campground where they find monsters, goblins, and the boogeyman. As much as I have absolutely no interest in these movies, I have to give them props on the amusing poster design. Other than that, if you want to watch then go ahead. As we head into the thick of awards season, it’s time to celebrate all the incredible films that 2016 brought us. La La Land, Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, Deadpool and Arrival will no doubt find themselves on the lips of many moviegoers over the next few weeks, while talent like Amy Adams, Casey Affleck, Emma Stone, Adam Driver and Denzel Washington, among others, will also start picking up some serious buzz.

We are, of course, referring to the Razzie Awards, which shine a light on the worst that the year had to offer.
