The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam marked the 11th film festival (across two continents and five countries) that I covered in 2011. Which means that not only do I probably deserve an Independent Spirit Award for journalistic insanity, but also that I’ve been under a rock when it comes to what’s been playing in actual art-houses and multiplexes for the past 12 months. So with this in mind I’ve compiled a list of my personal greatest fest hits (arranged by festival of discovery, though in no particular order, complete with quotes from previous posts) – from those that have played a theater near you, to those that will in 2012, to those that will frustratingly fall victim to the vagaries of the market only to reappear on someone else’s top DVDs list.

Great action footage combined with learned interviews. The steely-eyed Klitschkos contrast with the hype and flamboyance of the profession fight scene with amazing impact. Award winning documentary filmmaker Sebastian Dehnhardt was in the eye of the hurricane making this rocking and rolling fight flick. The film stars the boxing wunderkind Klitschko brothers, Vitali and Wladimir, two brothers with fighting in their genes. The problem is that they often fight each other with the same intensity as they fight their opponents. These two human beings are as close to perfect fighting machines as could be imagined. They are almost inhuman in their dedication, their piercing stares, their disciplined movements, chiseled features and indomitable spirit. When they are human it shows...

Despite a confusing opening sequence and a disappointingly anticlimactic ending, Klitschko makes for a thrilling boxing documentary. Profiling Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, the Ukrainian-born, German-adopted pugilists who are the first brothers to hold world championship heavyweight titles at the same time, director Sebastian Dehnhardt captures the ups and dramatic downs of careers that started in illicit kick-boxing clubs in communist Soviet Union and culminated in more than a half-dozen championship belts between them....

Title: Klitschko Director: Sebastian Dehnhardt Proving its subjects uncommon thinkers as well as uncommon fighters, the new documentary “Klitschko” is a surprisingly humanizing and informative look at the Ukrainian-born world champion boxing brothers of the same surname. Striking a nice balance between the personal and professional and for the most part avoiding the pitfalls of overly worshipful hagiography, the movie casts a spotlight on a deep, sincere and certainly much more well adjusted fraternal love than on display in last year’s Oscar-winning “The Fighter.” Shot over the course of two years by director Sebastian Dehnhardt, “Klitschko” has an immediate currency, given the brothers’ collective lock on the five heavyweight championship boxing belts...

Sebastian Dehnhardt’s extremely polite documentary Klitschko, about Ukrainian boxing brothers Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, never steps away from the territory that its interviewees cheerfully volunteer, even when they’ve been on the receiving end of the siblings’ fierce punches. The result isn’t quite a puff piece, but it feels like it’s building up the brothers’ self-approved mythology rather than getting under their skin. Have they really never secretly resented each other? Is the lifelong weight of their combined identity never taxing? What was up with Wladimir dating Hayden Panettiere? The closest the film gets to roughness outside ...

Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, the 6’6″ Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World subjects of Sebastian Dehnhardt’s Klitschko, are to pugilism what the Williams sisters are to tennis. But unlike Venus and Serena, these chess-playing siblings, who became the first brothers to hold world titles at the same time, also hold PhDs and are fluent in four languages. Coming of age behind the Iron Curtain, the Ukrainian brothers’ psyches were shaped both by black- market Bruce Lee movies and the Chernobyl disaster (their military dad was a first responder). So when I heard that current champ Wladimir (pictured above) was available for interviews – maybe running a political party in the homeland is keeping his big brother too busy? – I leapt at the chance to chat with one of (what a talking head in Klitschko calls) “the most intelligent heavyweights ever.”
Klitschko opens tomorrow, October 21, in New York and L.A. via Corinth Releasing.

Making its debut in the 2011 Tribeca/Espn Sports Film Festival, Klitschko - Sebastian Dehnhardt's documentary about the boxing brothers from Ukraine, Vitali and Wladimir - was nothing less than a knockout. In the world of the Wba, the two brothers, who have both been world champion heavyweights, are quite unique: they hold PhDs, and they refuse to fight one another. Tribeca's Vice President of Programming David Kwok wrote in this year's Film Guide: "Director Sebastian Dehnhardt's comprehensive portrait of the brothers is an insightful and personal look at the lives of two boys from the Ukraine who would become international sports stars. Candid interviews with the duo (along with their mother and father) shed light on their childhood spent on Soviet military bases during the Cold War, their strictly regimented life, how they got into boxing, and how Chernobyl affected them. The brothers' candidness forms the heart of the film.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Klitschko Trailer I'm not sure what to make of German director Sebastian Dehnhardt's resume but one look at IMDb can uncover a healthy interest in all things WWII.

Arguably the last fighters to create any excitement in the world of heavyweight boxing before the mat-rolling anarchy of the Ufc took over, Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko are the first brothers in the sport to ever hold world titles at the same time. They’re also incredibly good at chess. Ukranian-born and raised in a military family, the two brothers were obsessed with the art of fighting at an early age. Revealing interviews with their family and their trainers help give a good sense of how both men were crafted into two of the most feared fighters on the planet.

The Tribeca Film Festival in the Big Apple is currently in full swing, and many filmmakers are hoping to strike a distribution deal following the premiere of their labor of love. Another film picked up this week was Klitschko, a German documentary, by Sebastian Dehnhardt, about Vitaly and Vladimir Klitschko, a pair of World Champion boxing brothers. Corinth Films, a distributor mostly known for their handling of classic films and television series for broadcast on cable and satellite, have purchased the Us rights to the doc. Klitschko had its world preem this week as part of the Tribeca/Espn Sports Film Panel. Gist: The Ukrainian Klitschko brothers grew up in a lower class military family, and against all odds, they have both managed to attain Ph. Ds in Sports Science as well as becoming supreme World Champion boxers. Outside the ring they've become top notch German celebrities, often appearing on television and advertisements.

This year’s Tribeca will be running from Wednesday, April 20 to Sunday, May 1, so its close start date means that the lineup of movies are coming in fast. We’ve already gotten the World Narrative and World Documentary categories, and the next batch of movies have just been revealed.
Thanks to Deadline, we now have movies in the Spotlight, Cinemania, Special Screening and Sports categories. The list isn’t half bad; the one I’m looking forward to the most is The Guard, which got very strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year. All the categories seem to have solid picks, and I’d say this is shaping up to be a good year. Tfs will be there (including me!), so many of these movies will have reviews up on the site when the festival runs. Take a look at it below:

Well, congratulations New Yorkers, because you’ll get to see at least 2 films I saw at Sundance in January, when they screen at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, which just announced the second half of its festival lineup – the Spotlight, Cinemania, and Special Screening sections, most notably.
The films I’m referring to are Michael Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest documentary, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, and The Guard, which Don Cheadle co-stars in, as an FBI agent (or is it CIA).
I’m still planning on going through the full list of entries to spotlight any titles worthy of this website, and I’ll do that in coming days/weeks… definitely before the festival begins next month – a festival I plan to attend, since it’s right in my backyard.
Worth noting is that Rapaport’s doc will be making its New York premiere, the...
