In 1997, Disney released its animated film Hercules, which became a major hit globally. It earned an amazing $252.7 million on an $85 million budget, which was an exceptional amount of money back then, and it made history as one of Disney’s most beloved animated features. The original movie featured the voice talents of Tate Donovan (as Hercules), Danny DeVito (as Philoctetes), James Woods (as Hades), and Susan Egan (as Megara), some of who reprised their roles in the sequel animated series and the animated prequel. But, with Disney doing its series of live-action remakes of its animated classics, we know that Hercules is also being remade, and some recent rumors suggest that we have a chief candidate for the role of Megara!
These rumors come from Skyler Shuler, a well-known Disney insider, who has taken the time to answer some of the fans’ questions, one of which also had to do...

Twenty years after the fan-favorite Disney Renaissance film debuted in 1997, legendary composer Alan Menken revealed that he was working on a stage adaptation of "Hercules," the tale of a young man on his road to becoming a hero and finding out where he belongs in the world. Reunited with lyricist David Zippel, the Disney Legend created a number of all-new songs to compliment a book by Kristoffer Diaz and Robert Horn for the latest musical from the House of Mouse.
A few years later in 2019, the production made its world premiere at the Delacorte Theater in New York City's Central Park with a stellar cast that featured Jelani Alladin, who originated the role of Kristoff on stage in "Frozen," as Hercules, Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart of "Aladdin" on Broadway as Phil, star of NBC's "Smash" Krysta Rodriguez as Meg, and, instead of revisiting the character that he...

Disney has been cranking out the live-action adaptations of their animated classics for a number of years now, but they aren’t slowing down anytime soon. One of the many projects in development is the live-action Hercules movie set to be directed by Guy Ritchie. Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo are producing through their Agbo production banner, and they gave an update on the project while speaking with Variety.
One of the more common complaints directed towards Disney’s live-action adaptations is that they tend to stick too closely to their animated source material, but Joe Russo says that Hercules will be “a little bit more experimental in tone, a little bit more experimental in execution.” Russo added, “I think they’re excited to see what we can all bring to it in a way that isn’t just a reinterpretation of the animated film.” Guy Ritchie is...

Susan Egan is taking a step back from the “Disney Princess – The Concert” tour after being diagnosed with the temporary facial paralysis condition, Bell’s palsy.
The actress — who originated the role of Belle in the Broadway production of “Beauty and the Beast” and voiced Megara in Disney’s 1997 animated film “Hercules” — will no longer perform as Belle in the traveling princess production, but will stay on as a producer. Keeping a sense of humor in announcing the news, Egan shared a photo of Disney’s animated Belle raising an eyebrow.

We all know that Disney is in the midst of giving all of their animated movies the live-action treatment. One of the many live-action remakes in development is based on the 1997 animated Hercules movie, which featured the voices of Tate Donovan, Danny DeVito, Susan Egan, and James Woods. From time to time, Disney includes members of the original voice cast in the remakes (such as James Earl Jones in The Lion King), and Danny DeVito thinks he should return for the live-action Hercules movie.
Danny DeVito voiced Philoctetes in the original Hercules movie, a satyr who trains the young Hercules to be a hero. While speaking with Wired, DeVito joked that he is the live-action Hercules, but added, “If they don’t put me in that, they don’t have a hair on their ass.” There’s no mistaking Danny DeVito as the voice of Phil, and the character has...

Disney's live-action "Hercules" is one step closer to becoming a reality. Two years after Disney announced the live-action adaptation of the 1997 animated classic, Guy Ritchie has been confirmed as the film's director, as reported by Deadline. Ritchie previously directed the live-action remake of "Aladdin," which grossed more than 1 billion at the global box office.
Now that Ritchie is on board, fans can expect more "Hercules" news to follow. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" scribe Dave Callaham wrote the first draft of the script. However, a search for a new writer to take over the project is underway. Meanwhile, "Infinity War" directors Joe and Anthony Russo are attached as producers via their Agbo banner.

With Disney already deep into post-production on a live-action retread of “The Little Mermaid,” and currently filming a controversial “Snow White” remake starring “West Side Story” star Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, the Mouse House isn’t slowing down. It was announced yesterday that British director Guy Ritchie will helm an upcoming live-action redo of the 1997 Disney animated feature, “Hercules.”
Disney’s “Hercules” tells the story of the eponymous character (voiced in the original by Tate Donovan) and Greek god. Living among mortals, Hercules becomes determined to reclaim his god-like status, becoming a quasi-celebrity in the process. Along the way he falls in love with the acerbic Meg (voiced by Susan Egan) and must defeat Hades (voiced by James Woods), the God of the Underworld.
Ritchie has brought success to Disney with a live-action remake before. He directed the 2019 reboot of “Aladdin,” starring Will Smith. The feature would go on...

John Musker and Ron Clements' 1997 animated film "Hercules" is one of the more notable hot messes in the Disney animated canon. Based -- very, very, very, very loosely -- on Greek mythology, it tells the story of the rise of Hercules (Tim Daly), a son of Zeus (Rip Torn), whose godlike powers are robbed in infancy by Hades (James Woods), and his quest to return to Olympus by proving himself a true hero on Earth. His heroism is facilitated by his coach, the satyr Philoctetes (Danny DeVito), although continued mortality is made more tempting by his falling in love with Megara (Susan Egan), a...

Guy Ritchie, who directed Disney’s “Aladdin” in 2019, is set to direct the upcoming live-action adaptation of the 1997 film “Hercules,” Variety has confirmed.
As Variety previously reported, “Avengers: Endgame” directors Joe and Anthony Russo’s Agbo is producing the film being developed by Disney, which hired action specialist Dave Callaham to write a first draft. Agbo is in the process of hiring additional writers.
Ritchie most recently filmed an untitled action thriller with Jake Gyllenhaal. He wrote, directed and executive produced STX’s “Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre,” which was scheduled for a release in the first few months of 2022 but has since been pushed back without an official release date set.
The deal was made by CAA. Ritchie exited the agency last month for WME. His attorney is Matt Saver.

Anna rescues her sister, Mulan saves China, and Moana restores balance to the world. Hercules will go the distance as Disney’s next signature animated movie planned for a live-action redux.
Disney is in early development for a Hercules adaptation movie, according to THR, and it’s tapping notable resident talent from its corporate tentpole in Joe and Anthony Russo. The title character of Steven Universe is an adolescent boy who, over the course of the Cartoon Network series’ first five seasons, developed the ability to fly, to conjure an impenetrable pink shield out of thin air, to use his saliva to heal injuries short of death (and sometimes beyond), to merge his body with a friend’s (in an act called fusion) so they can become even stronger as one than they are side-by-side, and more. But his greatest power — and the reason the show became so adored that a follow-up film,...

Sebastian sure knows how to throw a party under the sea. But it sounds like even he would be impressed by the party that’s coming together for Disney fans under the clamshell of the Hollywood Bowl next week. The Little Mermaid will get the live concert screening treatment at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on June 3, 4, and 6. The event’s creative director, Richard Kraft, has told HitFix the deets on all the exciting plans for the three shows that are sure to make Disney fans squee. Film screenings paired with a live orchestra performance of the movie’s score is no new thing. A beloved film from the brilliant Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki delivers truly amazing video and audio in this exceptional Blu-ray release.
People call Hiyao Miyazaki the Japanese Disney and Spirited Away from 2001 is considered one of his very best, if not his masterpiece. The film starts like a fairly typical take on Alice in Wonderland or Narnia. A girl is bought into a fantasy world and has to find her way back. But Miyazaki takes it even further. His heroine, ten year old Chihiro is a typically modern girl, upset about moving into a new home and afraid of new changes in her life. But after her parents take a detour into a strange tunnel she finds herself trapped and worst of all, her parents have been turned into pigs.
Miyazaki’s fantasy vision is quite simply jaw dropping.

Rose Quartz is the structuring absence of Steven Universe. She’s the ducks flying north from Tony Soprano’s pool, the vacated desk of Laura Palmer, the hole around which the themes and characters of the series revolve and against which they react. So why does she have so little to do in what is, essentially, her introduction? “Story for Steven” is often touching and intermittently energetic, but only occasionally is it interesting.
Like Laura Palmer, Rose is gone before the cameras roll but kept alive through the people whose lives she touched and the traces of herself she left behind in the world. Unlike Laura Palmer, always a human figure for good and ill, she’s been largely symbolic and idealized throughout her posthumous appearances. The best parts...

Some 17 Sally Bowleses painted their nails green and sang “Maybe This Time” for the Sam Mendes revisal of Cabaret that ran on Broadway from March 1998 (Natasha Richardson) through January 2004 (Susan Egan). No doubt the Roundabout, which mounted that revisal, as well as the current revival of the revisal, hopes to keep the Kit Kat Klub door revolving. They started this spring with Michelle Williams, who was thrillingly emotional in the part, and have now moved on to Emma Stone, who reportedly had been their first choice. Even aside from Stone’s commercial appeal, you can see why: With her extraordinary face and Mona Lisa smile, her huge celadon eyes and coppery bob, she arrives prepackaged with the kind of remote fascination a Sally Bowles needs. And indeed, she looks terrific as the none-too-bright young thing in William Ivey Long’s pastel frocks and diaphanous lingerie. What fun! you think as...

Actors weathered a number of storms in 2008, several of which won't pass anytime soon. The biggest is the financial crisis that has made it more difficult to get credit, which every sector of the entertainment industry relies on, particularly movies and theatre. Beyond that, there was ongoing friction within organized labor, injuries on stage, and a reduction of scripted content on television.Depressing RecessionThe entertainment industry turned out not to be recession-proof soon after Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy Sept. 15 — the largest filing in U.S. history — and helped usher in the biggest economic crisis since the Depression. Share prices of major media companies such as Time Warner, Sony, and Disney tumbled, and subsequent months brought massive layoffs at NBC Universal and Viacom, among others. Economic conditions and the possibility of a Screen Actors Guild strike in early 2009 also caused studios to put several productions on hold.Broadway was particularly hard hit.

Winner of the audience feature award at the 1999 Slamdance festival, Adam Abraham and Gibson Frazier's "Man of the Century" is a swell cinematic scoop, featuring Frazier as a peppy, fast-talking journalist who appears to have popped out of a time machine from the 1920s. Screened by the American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre in Park City, Utah, in an evening showcasing Slamdance winners, "Man" looked fabulous on the big screen.
While an adventuresome distributor might enjoy limited success with the swinging black-and-white farce, cable and festival playdates are a natural for this dizzy decade-bender.
Philadelphia-native Abraham's enthusiasm for the gab and garb of the Roaring Twenties is infectious, and with Frazier he has created a winning character surrounded by believable contemporary gals and guys in a tricky gambit that works like a charm.
Johnny Twennies (Frazier) writes a column for the lowly Sun-Telegram, a New York rag with a kindly but pressured editor who reluctantly gives the lead one last chance to break a major story or lose his job. Johnny's SoHo art-dealer girlfriend (Susan Egan) also gives him several chances to seduce her, but such things as 1990's increasingly lurid journalism and recreational sex are not part of his anachronistic persona and ethics (he doesn't drink alcohol because he believes prohibition is still in effect).
One glimpse of his mother, who is a 19th-century society matron straight out of an Edith Wharton book, and no further explanation of Johnny is required. He's just Johnny, with his three-piece suit, hat and post-World War I optimism, able to handle any emergency and insult with boundless energy and snappy comebacks.
In the course of the movie, Johnny is hounded by hapless thugs who try to force him to write a favorable column about their boss, resulting in the uncovering of a scandal. Occasionally sidetracked in the ensuing zaniness, he always has time to lead an impromptu musical number, or fidget the digit in his colorful parlance.
Many memorable characters come and go on the fly, with the fine cast filled out by the likes of Bobby Short, Marisa Ryan, Anthony Rapp, Frank Gorshin, Brian Davies and Dwight Ewell.
With homages to silent cinema throughout and such icons as Harold Lloyd in imaginative sequences, "Man of the Century" is a labor of love that pays off for those who appreciate vintage clothes, music and set designs. From Zeljka Pavlinovic's slick production design and Claudia Hill's natty costumes to Matthew Jensen's excellent cinematography and Frank Reynold's sharp editing, the film is visually the equal of Abraham and Frazier's delightful screenplay.

The hero of Greek mythology with the "rippling pectorals" turns out to be a perfect choice for Disney's newest animated effort, a vast improvement over the lugubrious history lesson of "Pocahontas" and the turgid melodrama of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".
Boasting the usual superb animation, the humor one expects from the creators of "Aladdin" and a wonderful villain as voiced by James Woods, "Hercules" is an entertaining entry that will delight adults as much as children. It should do excellent business, probably topping the grosses of the past two summer efforts, although one shouldn't look for a blockbuster of "The Lion King" proportions.
Considering the character's enduring popularity, as shown by an endless succession of live- action films and television series, it's a wonder that the Disney people haven't gotten around to him until now. The heroes and villains of Greek mythology turn out to be a wonderful opportunity for both the animators and the screenwriters to flex their imaginations as well as offering the flexibility to provide generous doses of humorous pop culture references.
The story here begins with Hercules' birth, marked by a lavish party thrown by his parents, Zeus (voice of Rip Torn) and Hera (Samantha Eggar). Everyone is celebrating except for Hades (Woods), the Lord of the Underworld, who resents his position and who is plotting to overthrow Zeus.
First, he must get rid of Hercules, a potential threat. He dispatches his loyal underlings, Pain and Panic (Bobcat Goldthwait, Matt Frewer) to accomplish the task, but they bungle it, and the baby winds up on Earth, raised by the couple Amphitryon and Alcmene (Hal Holbrook, Barbara Barrie). The child suffers a difficult adolescence, shunned by his peers and the villagers because of his tendency for accidental mass destruction.
Looking to Zeus for answers, the adult Hercules (Tate Donovan) is told that he must prove himself a hero on Earth and enlist the help of Philoctetes, or "Phil" (Danny DeVito), a satyr, to help train him. Joined by Pegasus, his trusty winged horse, Hercules heads to Thebes, "The Big Olive", to accomplish his goals. This leads to the inevitable showdown with Hades, where the hero is nearly undone by his love for the beautiful Meg (Susan Egan, graduating to animation after playing Belle in Broadway's "Beauty and the Beast"), who, unbeknownst to him, works for the evil god.
The plot line, punctuated by six Alan Menken/David Zippel songs, offers plenty of highlights, such as Hercules' accidental devastation of a town square and his truly spectacular battle with the multiheaded Hydra. The witty screenplay skillfully parodies the conventions and characters of Greek mythology without being overly irreverent, and sharp-eyed adult viewers will delight in the contemporary references to "Karate Kid", "Midnight Cowboy", etc.
To Disney's credit, they even skewer their own overkill brand of merchandising in the "Hero to Zero" number, when Hercules turns into a media hero complete with his own workout scroll. Adults will also certainly get a kick from Hercules' reaction to seeing the play "Oedipus": "Man, I thought I had problems". The character of Hades is one of Disney's best and funniest villains yet, a fast-talking, fire-haired, dangerous schmoozer with the vocal cadences of a Hollywood agent. James Woods, in the best animated vocal turn since Robin Williams in "Aladdin", does full justice to the character.
The animation is, as usual, gorgeous, with the participation of British cartoonist Gerald Scarfe ("Pink Floyd -- The Wall") giving it a particularly stylish edge. Composer Alan Menken hasn't produced one of his best efforts, but even lesser Menken is better than most.
The film is enlivened by the superb vocal performances, from DeVito's hilarious turn as the rambunctious satyr to Torn's authoritative Zeus to Goldthwait and Frewer's addled villainous sidekicks. Donovan and Egan bring the right mixture of nobility and playfulness to their work as the romantic leads, and Charlton Heston begins the proceedings with a narration that lurches from portentous to funny; it's worth the price of admission just to hear him intone, "You go, girl".
Also on hand, serving as a Greek chorus, are the Muses, voiced by five Broadway veterans, including recent Tony winner Lillias White. The sole misstep is the character of Hermes, voiced (and drawn to look like) bandleader Paul Shaffer, hardly the ideal for animation immortality.
