"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was a groundbreaking series, but not everyone recognizes its genius. The show subverted sexist tropes that characterized women as helpless damsels in distress and painted men as their heroes. Buffy appeared to be completely powerless but secretly packed a huge punch. Some people believed that a woman could never be as strong as the Slayer — and some of those people were in huge Hollywood films like the original "Star Wars" trilogy.
The coming-of-age WB series is inherently supernatural, but that didn't stop people from criticizing "Buffy" for being unrealistic. Displays of superhuman strength are common in male-driven comic adaptations like "Spiderman" or "Thor," where the hero's powers originate from similarly mythical or science-fictional origins. But because Buffy is a teenage girl, some viewers couldn't wrap their heads around her capability.

Some of the best episodes of TV were written before the writer was even hired. The staff that writes great television like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" usually starts out by writing a spec script — in plain English, they script an original episode of the series within the framework laid out by the series creator and the writers. Some of the most memorable moments of the entire show have originated this way, including Giles getting thrown out of the Watchers' council. The spec script that got David Fury hired as the main writer of the season 3 episode "Helpless." However, not everything from his initial pitch made its way into the episode.
In the 12th episode of the season that follows Buffy's final year as a student at Sunnydale High, she starts to grapple with the authority figures in her life in a new way — her final boss is the town mayor,...

Not too many series make it to five seasons and those that do often feel like they've run out of gas by the time they get there. It's incredibly rare for a show's final season to be its best and yet, that's somehow the case with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spinoff, "Angel." After a strong, but largely episodic freshman outing, the series evolved into a truly great show in its 2nd and 3rd seasons, expanding on Angel's own mythology and exploring the complexities of what it means to fight an unwinnable battle. Things fell apart with season 4, which, despite having its moments, was far too serialized for its own good and also suffered from creatives whose focus was majorly split.
"Angel" is all about redemption, so what better season could there be than the one in which the show redeems itself? Thanks to a major paradigm shift, the spinoff returned revitalized for its fifth season,...

The first incarnation of Buffy spinoff series, Angel, was too dark for Warner Bros., according to its creators.
Angel is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year (yikes we're old) and to celebrate, Entertainment Weekly has put together a reuinion issue looking back at the series and gathering together the core cast to chat about making the vampire detective show, and its legacy.
You can see much of the content over here - and if you're an Angel fan it's recommended - but in one part of the interview, co-creator David Greenwalt reveals that they had to shut down production on the Buffy spinoff series in its infancy, because they were getting a little too carried away with the idea of pursuing a grimmer vibe than the Slayer-heavy show that spawned it.

The second episode of Angel sucked so badly that it forced The WB to drive a stake through the then-fledgling Buffy spinoff’s production schedule, according to the the series’ co-creator.
In a just-published Entertainment Weekly cover story commemorating Angel’s 20th anniversary, exec producer David Greenwalt — who birthed the offshoot with Buffy brainchild Joss Whedon — reveals that production was shut down early into Season 1 due to creative differences with the WB. At issue? The script for Angel‘s second episode.

“The Tick” has been canceled after two seasons at Amazon.
Series creator Ben Edlund broke the news on Twitter. “I’m sorry to say Amazon has chosen not to proceed with [‘The Tick’],” Edlund wrote. “I’m not sorry to say I love this show, its cast, its story, and its message. Destiny demands that my compatriots and I now seek a new home for this series.”
Edlund is the creator of the comic book on which the show was based. Peter Serafinowicz starred as the title character, a nigh-invulnerable superhero who fights crime in The City dressed as a massive blue tick. He is assisted in his quest for justice by Arthur Everest (Griffin Newman), a normal human who uses a moth-like suit in order to serve as The Tick’s sidekick. The series also starred Valorie Curry, Brendan Hines, Scott Speiser, Yara Martinez, and featured the voice of Alan Tudyk as Dangerboat.

As stories of sexual abuse and assault by well-known men grow more commonplace, a refrain has emerged, one that might sound like a plea: Listen to women. Believe women. Even when they speak out against someone that might be considered a genius or hero, don’t ignore their stories.
This week, “listen to women” became a roar. “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator Joss Whedon’s ex-wife Kai Cole wrote frankly from her perspective about Whedon being a “fake feminist” and the years he allegedly spent cheating on her. Tig Notaro, in promoting the new season of her Amazon series “One Mississippi,” spoke out regarding sexual harrassment allegations made against Louis C.K.,who also serves as the show’s executive producer.
And after an anonymous letter went to hundreds of people in the indie film industry, accusing those who run Los Angeles-based nonprofit film society Cinefamily of enabling an atmosphere of...

I saw the first episode of the new The Tick series for Amazon sometime last year and again more recently and still can't get over how good it is. There's just one thing that bothers me. The absence of one of my favorite Tick characters, Chairface Chippendale.
Chairface Chippendale is one of The Tick's most famous villains known for having a chair where his head should be. He has all the supervillain-esqe qualities one would want in a supervillain. Charming, well-dressed, sophisticated, and a chair head. And while I have had my doubts that I'll ever see him in a live action series, Executive Producer of The Tick, David Fury, recently made some statements at Comic-Con sharing the possibilities of not only Chairface but other well-known Tick characters. When asked if we might see any other characters from the past, he was very straightforward in saying:
"Yes, you will.

Every year, Comic-Con brings in actors from all over the world of obsessive fandoms. So we asked one of them to take a bunch of pictures for us.
When “The Tick” lands on Amazon next month, Griffin Newman co-stars as Arthur, the title hero’s sidekick. (Podcast fans: In addition to his work on “The Tick,” Newman also hosts the excellent “Blank Check” with David Sims.) Before his character makes his full-season debut, Newman is documenting his Comic-Con experience on the official IndieWire Instagram account.

With a week left until Election Day, the PSAs reminding people to vote continue to roll in. Joss Whedon has released a new video from his Save the Day series titled “Leonard.”
Starring Chris Pine, the actor stars as Leonard, “the human embodiment of today’s United States Congress – he’s dysfunctional, inappropriate, and if he was your employee, you’d fire him,” states the video’s description.
“I will say at first, that we had such high hopes for Leonard,” says Alan Tudyk’s character in the clip. “But then right away, there were…issues.”

FX has renewed its sophomore series Tyrant for Season 3. The drama, which comes from executive producer Howard Gordon (24, Homeland) will return in 2016 for a 10-episode third season. “Tyrant’s second season took the show to a new level thanks to the skill and direction of Howard, Chris and Glenn and their creative team, the exceptional cast and a story steeped in family, loyalty and intrigue,”Eric Schrier, president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, said in a statement. “We look forward to the next chapter and a sensational third season of Tyrant.” Gordon served as showrunner for Tyrant Season 2, which was also executive produced by Glenn Gordon Caron, Chris Keyser, David Fury, Gideon Raff, Avi Nir and Hugh Fitzpatrick. Where there's a Joker, there's gotta be a Batman, right?
Fans have been speculating that Ben Affleck's Batman might show up in the upcoming movie "Suicide Squad" - the actor has been spotted on the Toronto set - but now there's footage to back up the rumors.
Video of a car chase scene shot in the streets reveals the Batmobile in pursuit of the Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie).

Of course, there's no official confirmation of Batman's involvement in the movie, but it makes sense. "Suicide Squad" is the next DC Universe movie after "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Perhaps Affleck will pop up in a brief cameo.

If you thought that Angel Investigations had hit new levels of bad luck at the start of Hero, then Parting Gifts makes it look like Christmas morning.
For alas, Angel Investigations is not only broke, client-less (the last paying client seems to have been Melissa Burns) and now one man down. Poor old Doyle has fallen victim to the evil Scourge's deadly light ray, and neither Angel nor Cordelia are taking this too well.
Giving Angel some credit though – at least he knows that he's in a fantasy drama. Paying another trip to the Oracles, he's desperate for them to work their mojo to somehow bring Doyle back or reverse time. It's too much like hard work for these two Oracles – such a time-consuming job would distract them from swanning around in their golden palace while listening to harp music and concocting harsh put-downs to lesser mortals. Angel's looking in the wrong place though.

Being a freelance journalist can have equal amounts of ups and downs. On the down side, it's a profession that tends to keep you awake at night, especially when the bank balance hovers near the danger zone. No pension. The annual chore of filling out the tax form. The life of a freelancer can be a Greek Tragedy all of its own.
But on the glass half full side, at least freelancers like me don't need to endure the tedium of the dreaded meeting any more. Well, I could if I wanted to, by discussing my plans with my reflection in the mirror – except that that would be a bit weird, and also the mirror glass would shatter into small pieces after being unable to cope with my leering gargoyle visage. Otherwise, there's no need for meetings, since the week or month ahead is road-mapped in the freelancer's mind palace.

Lost was a landmark series for network television, a one-of-a-kind show that producers and executives are still trying, and failing, to recreate. It’s been ten years since it premiered, on September 22, 2004 (which, coincidentally, was the date of the crash of Oceanic 815). Rather than try to make a simple Top 10 Episodes list, which would induce nightmares of trying to rank drastically different installments, here are the best episodes from each of Lost’s six seasons, along with six runners up.

We’ve explored The X-Files cavalcade of creeps, and experienced Buffy’s ghastly menagerie of ghouls, so lets take a look at another show heavy on the featured creatures – Angel.
Angel (sometimes referred to as AtS, or Angel the Series) was a spin-off of Buffy that began with Angel, the vampire with a soul, leaving Buffy and her home town of Sunnydale and heading to Los Angles looking for… something. A new start. Redemption. Solid ratings.
For four seasons, Angel was the yang to Buffy’s yin, and after Buffy went off the air, Angel continued on for a fifth and final season. While the two parted networks towards the end, the early seasons were rife with crossovers, including characters such as fan favourites Spike and Oz in the show’s first season (Spike would return in the fifth and final season with James Marsters added as a starring member...

Call it the calm before the storm. After a couple of weeks in which the action has been fairly frequent, the focus is narrowing as this season nears a close. This is a streamlined, effective episode that hits all the beats it needs to without much fluff. There are a few loose ends to tie up, and the wham-bam is a touch thin, but they’re necessary movements.

The party’s over everyone. It was good while it lasted, and we can all just pack up and go home now. It took until the halfway point of this season, but we finally got there: we have a mole in the building.
Jeez.
24 is a wonderfully enjoyable show at its best. At its worst, it offers the same rehashed ideas over and over. While old tropes can work when they’re given a fresh twist, as we’ve seen over the last few weeks, a mole working in the CIA is narratively constraining. There are usually only two ways for it to play out: the mole is successful (as Nina Myers so very nearly was) or fails miserably. There is a third option,...

Jack Bauer is further outside the system that made his name than he’s ever been, both literally and figuratively.
On the run for years after supposed terrorist acts that actually protected American citizens, he resurfaces in London, far away from the U.S. metropolises he saved so many times. It’s the first time 24 has left the confines of the States for an entire season, though the show previously took a several-episode detour to Mexico and placed Jack in Africa for the 24: Redemption TV movie.
With the refreshed setting, there are many differences to the show’s previous incarnation.

Fox has released three TV spots and a clip from 24: Live Another Day. The series premiers on May 5th, which is this coming Monday! I can't believe it's almost here. I love this franchise, and I'm excited about seeing Kiefer Sutherland back as Jack Bauer. I really hope that this is just the beginning, and that we will get even more seasons of the show, and possibly a movie.
The high-octane saga reunites the Emmy Award-winning team of executive producer Howard Gordon; star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland; co-creator Robert Cochran; executive producers, Evan Katz, Manny Coto, David Fury, Brian Grazer and director Jon Cassar. It also will retain the real-time, pulse-pounding, fast-paced format with split screens and interweaving storylines. Set and shot in London, the suspenseful event series once again will follow the exploits of heroic agent Jack Bauer.
Four years ago, Jack was a fugitive from justice.

Fox have been going all out to promote the return of 24 next month, but this new trailer (edited together in a similar way to the previews shown before movies) might just be the best yet!
There are a lot of new plot details revealed – at least in regards to where we find Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer at the start of the 12 episode event series – and it really does appear as if that tables have turned when he’s labelled a terrorist and threatened with torture!
With the action now set in London, Jack’s main goal in 24: Live Another Day appears to be saving the President and avoiding a World War, all while attempting to clear his name.
Are you excited about the return of 24? Let us know your thoughts below!

“I’m Back, Dammit!” Those three words feature heavily on the latest cover of Entertainment Weekly as Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer makes his explosive return in 12-episode event series 24: Live Another Day after being off the small screen for four years.
Talking to the site, the actor had this to say about returning to the role of the iconic former CTU Agent after such a long time: “It was very stressful, making the choice to come back,” he revealed. “That sense of responsibility to the show has not dissipated at all. When we started out, I said to [director Jon Cassar] to watch me like a hawk. If there was something that wasn’t feeling right, don’t wait to see if it works its way out. I was very scared I couldn’t remember Jack. It had been awhile.”
Also below is a new featurette focusing on the return of...

"There's no going back for me."
Fox has released an awesome full trailer for their highly anticipated 24: Live Another Day limited series, which sees Kiefer Sutherland's Jack Ryan trying to save the day…. again. Only this time he's doing it in London. I'm still so happy that 24 is back! This next series looks like it's going to be incredible.

24 fans have been waiting patiently for Jack Bauer’s story to be continued ever since season eight wrapped up way back in 2010, and that wait is now almost over with the upcoming 24: Live Another Day, a 12-episode limited series which picks up four years after the former CTU Agent went on the run.
The preview labels Jack Bauer as, “Fugitive, Soldier, Hero” and it should be very interesting to see which of these roles he spends most of the time filling as the action comes to London.
The trailer also offers up a look at many of the new and returning cast members. Are you looking forward to 24: Live Another Day? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!

With its ongoing emotional sagas and character studies, it's sometimes easy to forget that Buffy The Vampire Slayer has its roots in horror. Week after week, Buffy battles toothy vampires, slimy demons and other horrors from the Hellmouth – but don't forget that the show equates these monstrosities with the trials of growing up.
The latest instalment is no exception. Helpless is more of an overt horror story, using the tried and tested 'Stuck in a haunted house' trope as the backdrop for a scary tussle between Buffy and a bloke who resembles a three-way cross between a vampire, Steve Tyler from Aerosmith and the bass player guy from Blondie.
Which means another gold star from me, I'm afraid. Having sat through the last batch of Buffy The Vampire Slayer episodes, I've noted how faults seem to be few and far between. Hell's teeth, I've gone soft. Possibly it's because I'm...

Getting people psyched up for the new 24 series, 24: Live Another Day, may strike many people as something along the lines of Coke commercials. At this point, are you really selling to anyone? We all know whether or not we’re interested in Coke.
Still, despite the idea that pulling in the completely uninitiated may be a questionable pursuit, Fox is pretty clear on the idea that it wants to make sure it doesn’t miss anyone. The new teaser doesn’t exactly give you a lot to go on, perhaps in a way similar to the idea that Coke commercials don’t exactly explain the product. But, it does at least give you the impression that it may pull off the difficult and dangerous attempt of standing next to the previous entries. I’m not absolutely convinced that this is a game we can keep playing, but the trailer looks good.

Jack is back! We saw some intriguing teasers during this year’s Super Bowl and a new batch of stills just a few days ago, but Fox have now released a trailer with actual footage from 24: Live Another Day. The majority of the series was shot in London, and it quickly becomes clear that the city and its landmarks will form an important backdrop to proceedings.
Branded a psychopath and traitor, it’s obvious that Jack is still on the run in this follow-up to season eight’s cliffhanger, while his very ominous, “There’s no going for me” line and the that fact he’s trying to avert a world war serve as proof that this season of 24 may just have the highest stakes yet for the former CTU Agent.

Fox’s event series “24: Live Another Day” has replaced Judy Davis with Michelle Fairley (“Game of Thrones”) in the recurring guest star role of Margot, a British national and the widow of a notorious terrorist. The news broke last week that Davis, who lives in Australia, had to withdraw from the project due to personal family matters which will not allow her to travel at the time needed. The 12-episode miniseries reunites the Emmy Award-winning team of executive producer Howard Gordon; star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland; co-creator Robert Cochran; executive producers, Evan Katz, Manny Coto, David Fury, Brian Grazer and director Jon Cassar.

The chance to watch Kiefer Sutherland run around London duffing up terrorists while shouting “Damnit!” has attracted yet another name. Chuck/Dexter veteran Yvonne Strahovski is joining the cast of the new miniseries spin-off 24: Live Another Day.As you may know by now, the Us Fox network is bringing Jack back for a “limited series” new season of 12 episodes that will find the perpetually time-crunched CTU agent shifted to London for a new mission. Strahovski is aboard as Kate Morgan, a brilliant but impulsive CIA operative stationed in the city. It should be no great stretch for Strahovski after her long-term CIA work in Chuck, which surely pretty much qualifies her as a real agent by this point. She joins a cast that already includes 24 alumni Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kim Raver and William Devane, plus newcomers to the show Giles Matthey, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Michael Wincott and Judy Davis.
