Spirited Away
Blu ray
Gkids/Shout! Factory
2001/ 1:85 / 125 min.
Starring Rumi Hiiragi, Miyu Irino
Directed by Hayao Miyazaki
The story of a lonely child lost in a beautiful and bizarre dreamscape, Spirited Away naturally begs comparison to Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz. But in contrast to those frenetic classics, Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece is cooly meditative – a serene head trip.
At first sight Miyazaki’s Wonderland is not so wonderful – it’s an abandoned theme park discovered by ten year old Chihiro and her parents at the end of a secluded country road (Miyazaki’s version of a rabbit hole). Though the paint is peeling and the sidewalks cracked, the barren mall maintains a suspiciously well-stocked food court. Chihiro’s folks dig right in and find out the hard way that there’s no such thing as a free lunch – soon enough mom and dad are transformed...

One of the best and most successful films Studio Ghibli has ever produced – “Spirited Away” – had to wait 18 years to be released in China. A sign that the relationship between Japan and China is getting more relaxed, the movie has officially landed a Chinese theatrical release for the first time since opening in 2001.
Miyazaki’s critically acclaimed “Spirited Away” is a terrific work that seamlessly mixes twenty years of great technical innovation, charming characters and weird plot developments. It won numerous international awards, including the Golden Bear for best film at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival and the Oscar for best animated feature at the 2003 Oscars.
Moreover, for many years has been the highest grossing Japanese film of all time, only surpassed in 2017 by “Your Name’ but it will probably reclaim its position after the Chinese release. In fact the film is expected to perform really well at the Chinese box office later this year,...

The first decade and a half of the 21st century has brought a lot of changes to the landscape of film. The advancement and sophistication of computers has made realistic computer generated effects a mainstay in both big-budget and small-budget films. The internet and streaming technologies have given big Hollywood new competition in films produced independently and by non-traditional means. We went from purchasing films on yards of tape to plastic disks, and now we can simply upload them to the cloud. Advertisements for films have reached a higher, more ruthless level where generating hype through trailers and teasers is crucial for a film’s commercial success. Movie attendance has fluctuated along with the economy, but that hasn...

★★★★★There is a scene part of the way through Hayao Miyazaki's exceptional Spirited Away (2001) in which the young girl, Chihiro (voiced by Rumi Hiiragi) helps to bathe an odorous spirit that frequents the bathhouse in which she is forced to work. Her tenacity in serving a customer that everyone else has shunned is rewarded when the spirit is revealed to have been a polluted river spirit in need of cleaning. The sequence echoes the entire film's perfect blend of Miyazaki's recurrent themes in a beautifully realised world of traditional Japanese myth. This is a magical, joyous, complex and heartstring-tugging masterpiece of cinema.
