Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on Ian Simmons Vodcast, Kicking The Seat, talking the 1973 first JFK conspiracy film “Executive Action” … it’s 50th Anniversary. Why was this particular anniversary film chosen? Because today … November 22nd, 2023, is the 60th Anniversary of the John F. Kennedy assassination.
At a gathering in June 1963, shadowy industrial, political and U.S. intelligence figures discuss their growing dissatisfaction with the Kennedy administration. The most powerful, a geopolitical oil mogul, is Ferguson (Will Geer). The rest of these figureheads include Foster (Robert Ryan) and Farrington (Burt Lancaster), a black ops expert. When the green light is lit on the operation, Farrington recruits a team of shooters and a fall guy named Lee Harvey Oswald. Their destination? Dallas, Texas, on November 22nd, 1963, and the presidential motorcade of destiny.

The title "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" has been attached to several pieces of media over the decades. The best-known version is the Cyndi Lauper song, which came close to topping the pop charts when it came out in 1983. Lauper's tune, however, was a feminist remake of a 1979 song by Robert Hazard.
Lauper's single was so popular in the 1980s that it spawned dozens of other professional artists to record or sing their own versions. And in 1985, it also inspired New World Pictures to put out a romantic comedy of the same name that starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt. The film did a modest $6.3 million at the box office relative to its cost. It arguably could have done better if Lauper allowed her song to be used in the film — she refused, however, and Hazard's original version was used instead. Despite that, the feature has left enough...

Girls just wanna have fun, no matter what decade it is.
Village Roadshow is producing a modern-day remake of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the cult 1985 romantic comedy dance movie that starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt.
Marja-Lewis Ryan, who acted as showrunner of The L Word: Generation Q, is co-writing the script with Allie Romano, who was a staff writer and executive story editor on Generation Q.
Elizabeth Banks is producing with Max Handelman via the duo’s Brownstone Productions.
Girls, made by now-defunct New World Pictures, centered on an army brat (Parker) who settles in Chicago, attends a strict Catholic high school and contends with an even stricter father at home. The girl decides to follow her passion of dance and, with the encouragement of her new best friend (Hunt), auditions for the local TV dance show. "This must be what they mean by 'poetic justice.'" Studiocanal UK has revealed a new official UK trailer for the 4K restoration of this action crime thriller called Raw Deal, which was originally produced by the one-and-only Dino De Laurentiis. The film was released in the summer of 1986, but end up flopping, which lead to De Laurentiis' going bankrupt and selling off the rights of Total Recall (both are with Arnold). Dismissed from the FBI, Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Kaminsky, who's contacted by his old boss. Determined to find his son's killler, Shannon needs Kaminsky and offers to re-instate him if he is successful. Kaminsky assumes a new identity and moves to Chicago where he ingratiates in the underworld. To be successful, it is vital he's accepted by the gangsters. Also stars Kathryn Harrold, Darren McGavin, Sam Wanamaker, Paul Shenar, Steven Hill, and Ed Lauter. The new trailer also...

Dino De Laurentiis took a lot of flack for his underwhelming remake of the incomparable 1933 horror classic, which he promoted into a monster-sized hit. Nothing could eclipse the original but the good casting still appeals. An honest ad campaign would have leaned on two points: See Jeff Bridges and Charles Grodin carry an insultingly ugly production like real stars! See ‘newcomer’ Jessica Lange play a sexualized ditz so well that she retains her dignity! …and most importantly, See the biggest special effects fraud ever perpetrated on movie screens! Umbrella Entertainment from Australia puts this one back in print, on Blu-ray.

” The most important thing to remember is: to protect your quarterback – Me!”
Burt Reynolds in The Longest Yard (1974) will be screening at The Wildey Theater in Edwardsville, Il at 7pm Tuesday, January 28th. Admission is $2.
Hollywood veteran director Robert Aldrich gave Burt Reynolds one of his biggest hits – and best roles – in this seriocomic tale of prison life and football. On the surface, the character of Paul Crewe is fairly despicable – he is a smartass, a drunk, and a violent malcontent not above mistreating women. But Reynolds not only makes us like Crewe, he makes us actually root for him to find redemption. With Eddie Albert and Ed Lauter as the villains, and wonderful character performances from Richard Kiel, Michael Conrad, Bernadette Peters, and many others, Yard doesn’t gloss over its portrayal of prison society. The hard life often explodes in violence, racial tensions abound, and then there’s the warden’s secretary.

All-American race car mania is alive and well in this excellent Jeff Bridges movie, a true biographical story researched by Tom Wolfe. Junior Johnson needs a future beyond running moonshine for his father, and finds it climbing the rungs of success in the stock car racing game. This may be the most satisfying saga of its kind, and it helped prove that Bridges was a star.

Joseph Wambaugh’s breakthrough novel went through a blender to fit George C. Scott into the narrative, but it’s still a great cop show with terrific work from Stacy Keach and Scott Wilson, not to mention Jane Alexander and Rosalind Cash. The pro-cop agenda has a definite tone of personal experience, and the grim finish is anything but feel-good puffery.

Lee Marvin rose through the ranks of movie stardom as a character actor, delivering mostly villainous supporting turns in many films before finally graduating to leading roles. Regardless of which side of the law he was on however, he projected a tough-as-nails intensity and a two-fisted integrity which elevated even the slightest material. Born February 19, 1924, in New York City, Marvin quit high school to enter the Marine Corps and while serving in the South Pacific was badly wounded in battle when a machine gun nest shot off part of his buttocks and severed his sciatic nerve. He spent a year in recovery before returning to the U.S. where he began working as a plumber. No, this title doesn’t refer to being the last one to arrive in music class and getting stuck with the lamest of instruments to play. Satan’s Triangle (1975) is a creepy, seafaring TV tale of supernatural mystery with an ending that absolutely kills. You may think the title tells all, and the journey can’t quite supplant the destination, but oh boy, what a destination. You’re going to need your sea legs for this finale.
For those not familiar with The Bermuda Triangle, aka The Devil’s Triangle, it is an area of water loosely configured between Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Florida that was privy to many disappearances – boats, planes, and people. And back in the ‘70s, long before the internet, the only information to go on about this and other phenomena (Hey Bigfoot!) was provided by speculative quasidocumentaries, scientific journals dispelling the myths, and TV fodder such as Satan’s Triangle.

It’s the eyes, isn’t it? Wide like saucers and twice as deep, they’re impenetrable. And the wooden leer of the wide open maw betrays them, separate and with its own agenda. Of course I’m referring to ventriloquist dummies, and the eerie spell they cast upon the viewer. The horror viewer, specifically; we’ll seek out anything that gives us a sense of unease. Which brings us to Richard Attenborough’s Magic (1978), a wryly creepy tale of encroaching madness and showbiz folly. (Aren’t they the same thing?)

Burt Reynolds, one of We Are Movie Geeks favorite actors, turns 80 today. Happy Birthday Burt!
On February 11th, 1936, Reynolds was born in Waycross, Georgia, before his family moved to Jupiter Florida, where his father served as Chief of Police. Young Burt excelled at sports and played football at Florida State University. He became an All Star Southern Conference halfback (and was earmarked by the Baltimore Colts) before injuries sidelined his football career. He dropped out of college and headed to New York with dreams of becoming an actor. There he worked in restaurants and clubs while pulling the odd TV job or theater role. Theodore Bikel dead at 91: Oscar-nominated actor and folk singer best known for stage musicals 'The Sound of Music,' 'Fiddler on the Roof' Folk singer, social and union activist, and stage, film, and television actor Theodore Bikel, best remembered for starring in the Broadway musical The Sound of Music and, throughout the U.S., in Fiddler on the Roof, died Monday morning (July 20, '15) of "natural causes" at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. The Austrian-born Bikel – as Theodore Meir Bikel on May 2, 1924, in Vienna, to Yiddish-speaking Eastern European parents – was 91. Fled Hitler Thanks to his well-connected Zionist father, six months after the German annexation of Austria in March 1938 ("they were greeted with jubilation by the local populace," he would recall in 2012), the 14-year-old Bikel and his family fled to Palestine, at the time a British protectorate. While there, the teenager began acting on stage,...

Justin Timberlake on the Oscars' Red Carpet Justin Timberlake at the Academy Awards The Social Network actor Justin Timberlake arrives at the 83rd Academy Awards, which took place on Sunday, Feb. 27, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. At the ceremony, Timberlake and Black Swan actress Mila Kunis introduced the nominees – and eventual winners – in the animation categories. Throughout the proceedings, he pretended to be the elusive Banksy, whose Exit Through the Gift Shop was a Best Documentary Feature contender. The joke fell mostly flat, but Timberlake actually elicited some laughs when he imitated three-time Oscar-nominated veteran Kirk Douglas*, who mercilessly stretched the Best Supporting Actress announcement into what seemed like hours. Admittedly, Douglas was funny. (The winner in that particular category turned out to be Melissa Leo for David O. Russell's The Fighter.) As announced by the Justin Timberlake-Mila Kunis duo, the Best Animated Short Film was Shaun Tan...

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon's The Town That Dreaded Sundown provides some classic scares, so it's fitting that this new one-sheet has employed a classic poster artist. Graham Humphreys, justly lauded for his Nightmare On Elm Street, Evil Dead and FrightFest work, has composed this beautiful old-school image for the film. We've also got some work-in-progress shots.Nominally a remake of Charles B. Pierce's 1976 slasher, Gomez-Rejon's film is actually a bit more interesting than that. The new version takes place in a world where the previous film exists and everyone has seen it. Gomez-Rejon wanted to explore the notion of a town that suffered a real-life horror and then came to be defined by a movie version. You can read his thoughts in more detail in Empire's interview here. The Town That Dreaded Sundown stars Addison Timlin, Veronica Cartwright, Gary Cole, Anthony Anderson, the late Edward Herrmann, Ed Lauter and Denis O'Hare.

When you think about it, John Carpenter and Wes Craven are to blame. Without them we wouldn’t have the stone-cold genre classics Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street. And without them we wouldn’t have their dubious legacy of derivative sequels, remakes and reboots that has plagued multiplexes for going on fifteen years now.
Outside of such an environment, a remake of (or sequel to?) The Town That Dreaded Sundown would never have been greenlit. The blind greed of studio executives is the only logical explanation for this movie’s existence. The creative merit of the enterprise certainly evades me.
Perhaps you need some context; I certainly did. The original was a 1976 slasher...

In 1946, the American town of Texarkana was rocked by a series of murders. Dubbed “The Moonlight Murders” by the press, these were real, tragic events that scarred the town. In 1976, Charles B. Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions has been ridiculously busy of late, so much so that it’s almost impossible to keep track of all its upcoming projects. And you’ll be forgiven if Blumhouse’s take on The Town that Dreaded Sundown slipped through the cracks for you – the horror redo has been flying very much under the radar. That’s changing today, however, with the unveiling of two official images from the flick.
Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (American Horror Story) makes his directorial debut on the movie, a “reinvention” of the 1976 independent horror cult film. The Town that Dreaded Sundown isn’t a remake in the traditional sense – it’s set in a world in which the original film exists and is on the minds of townspeople in Texarkana. This time around, a maniac who bears a striking resemblance to the figure from the 1976 film is slaughtering people on the town’s streets.

Among the most pleasant experiences I have enjoyed in recent years was a long, leisurely lunch with Ed Lauter, one of my all-time-favorite character actors, last November at the Starz Denver Film Festival. For the better part of two hours before we engaged in an on-stage, post-screening Q&A after the Denver Fest premiere of Ed Burns' delightful "The Fitzgerald Family Christmas," we chatted about the highlights of our respective careers -- and he was graciously polite enough to indicate he found my anecdotes almost as interesting as his.Mind you, it wasn't like we were in any sort of "Can you top this?" competition. Because, really, what could I possibly say that could top his account of being cast by Alfred Hitchcock in "Family Plot" after The Master of Suspense spotted him in "The Longest Yard"? Lauter impressed Hitchcock so much that he was set to co-star in "The Short Night,...

Though audiences may not be as familiar with the names of character actors as they are with the A-list stars who are bombarded by paparazzi and appear in the tabloids and gossip websites non-stop, that doesn't make them any less important in the world of cinema. Sadly, Hollywood has lost another great character actor this week as THR reports Ed Lauter, who most recently appeared as Berenice Bejo's butler in The Artist, and recurred on Showtime's series "Shameless," has passed away at age 74. Earlier this summer, Lauter learned he had contracted mesothelioma, and he finally lost that battle with the terminal cancer. Lauter has been acting since 1971 after making his debut in an episode of the series "Mannix." He would arrive on the big screen just one year later in the western Dirty Little Billy. The actor turned that into a career that now spans over 200 films and TV episodes.

Character actor extraordinaire Ed Lauter, who most recently appeared in Showtime's "Shameless," has passed away at the age of 74.
Lauter, whose career spanned five decades, lost a battle with mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer most commonly caused by asbestos exposure, on Wednesday (Oct. 16), his publicist Edward Lozzi tells the AP.
The veteran TV actor began his career in 1971 with appearances on "Mannix" and "Cannon," before appearing in such films as 1974's original "The Longest Yard" and Alfred Hitchcock's last movie, "The Family Plot." Lauter worked steadily throughout the years, recently landing roles in 2011's "The Artist," 2012's "Trouble with the Curve" and, most notably, a four episode arc in Season 3 of "Shameless"
Lauter continued to work until only a few months ago, resulting in appearances in four films that will be released posthumously.

Having starred in over 204 different projects throughout his 42-year career, Ed Lauter was a man whose face we all recognize from somewhere — something he called a "turn actor” (the character who shows up when the story needs to make a major one). Sadly, the Long Beach, N.Y. native died Wednesday from causes relating to this mesothelioma. His publicist Edward Lozzi told The Hollywood Reporter that Lauter had been diagnosed back in May with a terminal form of the cancer most commonly caused by exposure to asbestos. Most recently, Lauter starred opposite Clint Eastwood as a baseball scout in Trouble With the Curve. He was also the dutiful butler in The Artist and held recurring roles on TV shows including Shameless, Psych, and ER. The 74-year-old Lauter got his start on Broadway alongside James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander as part of 1968’s stage production of The Great White Hope.
