Wes Anderson’s latest film, Asteroid City, is now available to rent or buy on digital platforms, after just three weeks in theaters. The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, is a metafictional comedy-drama set in a retro-futuristic version of the 1950s, where a TV host introduces a televised production of a play by famed playwright Conrad Earp (Edward Norton), depicting the events of a Junior Stargazer convention in a desert town.
The film features an ensemble cast that includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Steve Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan and Jeff Goldblum. Wes Anderson has always managed to conjure up so much joy and wonder in his films, from his early days to his most recent work. There’s always an element of childish imagination and wonder to his films that always helps you fall in love with the characters and the worlds. Beneath that style, however, has always been a maturity to his storytelling, a sense of heartache and subtle sadness that lingers through the colourful worlds. Asteroid City is like so much of Anderson’s previous work, it has the joy and wonder, it has the wonderful colour pallet and style we’ve come to expect and perhaps has deeper meanings and messages than in any of his previous work.

All good things come to an end, and for Bryan Cranston, the end of his acting career could arrive by 2026. Speaking to British GQ about the future, Cranston says he plans to retire from acting (for a limited time) and move to France in the coming years.
“I want to have that experience. I want to go for day trips and have the fire in the fireplace and drink wine with new friends and not read scripts,” Cranston explains. “It’s not going to be like, ‘Oh, I’ll read and see what I’m going to do.’ No, it’s a pause. It’s a stop.”
Cranston says he plans to shut down his production company, Moonshot Entertainment, and pause his acting career for at least six months. He’s nearing 70 and wants to enjoy life without Hollywood looming over his shoulder.

The Cannes Film Festival is accustomed to stars but when it comes to sheer celebrity wattage, you can’t match a Wes Anderson movie.
And so it was Tuesday night with the world premiere of Anderson’s latest, Asteroid City, which features a massive cast of A-listers — Tom Hanks, Steve Carell, Scarlett Johansson, Hong Chau, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Adrien Brody and others.
Hanks and wife Rita Wilson, Carell, Johansson, Schwartzman, Cranston, Wright, Brody, Matt Dillon, Steve Park, Maya Hawke and Hope Davis were among those in attendance at Cannes, where Anderson and his cast arrived en masse by bus instead of the usual limos.

Ray Donovan star Liev Schreiber is getting locked and loaded for a holiday-themed action movie from Gangs of London director Xavier Gens called The Guns of Christmas Past. Deadline says Schreiber is negotiating for the lead role in Gens’s genre mash-up, described as “A Christmas Carol meets John Wick.”
The story revolves around Ebb, a former hitman for the mob who emerges from the shadows when his best friend gets killed. Ebb plans to infiltrate the enemy’s compound to inflict revenge, but the past, present, and future ghosts haunt him throughout the night to ruin his plans. Gens directs from a script by Andrew Hilton, with Navid McIlhargey and Erik Olsen producing.
I’m sorry, what? This movie sounds wacky! It’s like something Frank Cross from Scrooged would air on Ibc Television on Christmas Eve. After 2022’s Violent Night, starring David Habour, outlandish Christmas movies are the new holiday hotness.

1996 was, generally speaking, not a stellar year for film. The year's blockbusters were limp, containing Roland Emmerich's gloriously silly "Independence Day," Michael Bay's insufferable "The Rock," the undeniably thin "Twister," and the weirdly cold "Mission: Impossible." 1996 was also the year we had to squint and pretend that Cameron Crowe hadn't lost his mojo with "Jerry Maguire," as well as the year MTV convinced us that the terrible "Romeo + Juliet" was a good movie. On top of all that, 1996 saw the execrable "Space Jam" inflict its unholy existence upon the world.

This is turning into a banner year for movies shot on Kodak film, led by such Oscar hopefuls as Christopher Nolan’s IMAX’d “Oppenheimer” biopic, Martin Scorsese’s first Western, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein film, “Maestro,” Wes Anderson’s latest, “Asteroid City,” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ subversive “Frankenstein” re-imagining “Poor Things.”
And those are just the prestige films.
Likewise, Cannes Film Festival boasted 29 features and shorts shot on Kodak film, including such Oscar hopefuls as Martin Scorsese’s first Western “Killers of the Flower Moon,” (shot by Rodrigo Prieto), Wes Anderson’s ’50s sci-fi comedy-drama, “Asteroid City” (shot by Robert Yeoman) Ken Loach’s “The Old Oak,” about a pub in tension-filled Northeast England, (shot by Robbie Ryan), and Steve McQueen’s “Occupied City,” a documentary about Amsterdam under Nazi occupation during World War II (shot by Lennert Hillege).
Four on-film entries compete for the Palme d’Or.

Wes Anderson fans are about to be over the moon. The first trailer for “Asteroid City,” the Oscar-nominated “Royal Tenenbaums” and “Grand Budapest Hotel” director’s 11th feature film, has been released, giving fans their first look at the ensemble film ahead of its June theatrical premiere.
“Asteroid City” is named after its setting, a tiny town off the freeway and in the middle of the American desert. Set in 1955, the movie takes place during the town’s annual “Junior Stargazer and Space Cadet” convention, celebrated during “Asteroid Day,” which — according to Jeffrey Wright in the trailer — commemorates “September 23, 3,007 B.C.,” when a meteorite made impact in the town’s current location.
Anderson favorite Jason Schwartzman leads the cast of the film as a widowed father who gets stranded in the town with his four children and begs his father-in-law (Tom Hanks) to come get them. While there, he develops...

Bill Murray will not appear in Wes Anderson’s next film “Asteroid City” and was replaced by Steve Carell in the project, TheWrap has learned, and the reason was because Murray had tested positive for Covid-19 prior to filming.
Fans who noticed the full cast list for Anderson’s “Asteroid City” after Focus Features acquired the film earlier this week may have wondered why Murray’s name, who has appeared in nearly all of Anderson’s movies in some form, was conspicuously absent. It was even Murray who first let slip that the film was in fact titled “Asteroid City.”

With seven nominations to his name, perennial Oscar contender Wes Anderson can call his own shots. It helps that he’s one of Hollywood’s most visually creative auteurs. Since 2012’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” which Focus Features released, Searchlight has distributed all of Anderson’s features, from his biggest global hit in 2014, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and 2018’s stop-motion “Isle of Dogs” (59 million in 2018) to 2021’s “The French Dispatch” (45.6 million worldwide) which delayed its Cannes world premiere by a year due to the pandemic and also relied, like everyone else, on online revenues.
So why did Anderson return to Focus for his latest star-crammed comedy ensemble, “Asteroid City” (2023), an original “poetic meditation on the meaning of life” co-written with his usual collaborator Roman Coppola? This time Anderson returns to a fictional American locale, setting the 1955 story at a desert town’s Junior Stargazer convention, which pulls in student competitors and their parents from across the country.

“Asteroid City,” the next star-studded drama from director Wes Anderson, will be released by Focus Features.
The release reunites the filmmaker with the studio that rolled out his 2012 coming-of-age story “Moonrise Kingdom,” which was Oscar nominated for original screenplay. Searchlight has released Anderson’s last three movies: 2014’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” 2018’s “Isle of Dogs” and 2021’s “The French Dispatch.”
Universal Pictures, the parent company of Focus Features, will handle the new film’s international distribution.
In addition to directing, Anderson wrote the story with Roman Coppola. With the majors eagerly seeking franchises rather than films, their executives might now pay some attention to a courtly Texan who lives in Paris. For 25 years, Wes Anderson has quietly but systematically built his unlikely and fragile franchise around 10 movies that filmgoers profess to enjoy but not understand. His latest, The French Dispatch, opened last week to a $5.5 million box office gross in Week 1, thus suggesting that “art movies” somehow can survive even amid the challenges of 2021.
The French Dispatch is a French movie (it’s not) based on a story (actually three) described by The New York Times as “a love letter to journalism,” which isn’t about journalism at all. But then other Anderson films like Bottle Rocket weren’t about rockets nor was Moonrise Kingdom about a kingdom nor Isle of Dogs that much about dogs.

Frances McDormand joined Joel Coen and Steve Buscemi at the 2021 Tribeca Festival to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Fargo,” which won the performer her first Academy Award for Best Actress. McDormand’s humble police detective Marge Gunderson remains one of the Coen Brothers’ most beloved characters, but she could’ve been a bit more polarizing had an original idea to have Marge attend a “right to life protest” been kept in the script.
“Is it outing you to ask you to tell them the scene I read first?” McDormand asked Coen. “Her friend invited her to a right-to-life protest! Oh my God! Can you imagine?”
“There are a lot of thought experiments that happen while you’re doing these things,” Coen added. “Some of them you reject, some of them you don’t…There was a big population in parts of northern Minnesota that were very conservative.”

Predicting the Best Picture winner is often the toughest among the 24 categories at the Oscars. We learned this at the 2020 Academy Awards. We were certain the top prize would go to “1917” but it was “Parasite” that prevailed. When making our Best Picture Oscar predictions, we weigh many factors, the most important of which is the effect of the preferential ballot that is used only for this race (voters rank all the nominees with the winner being the one that is the consensus choice.)
We also take into account the pedigree of the filmmakers, the critical reception to their previous films, the box office tally and the track record of the studios. We’ve taken all of these into consideration again as we look ahead to the 2021 Academy Awards. (Scroll down for the 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Picture.)

“The Long Hot Summer”
By Raymond Benson
I was living in New York City in the summer of 1989, when Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing opened and caused a sensation. I recall finding the picture exhilarating at first, and then ultimately very disturbing. Racial tension in the city had been high following several incidents of police brutality against persons of color on one hand, and the Central Park jogger case, which had occurred a mere three months earlier, on the other. Was the film a cautionary tale or a call to action, or both?
Now, thirty years later, Do the Right Thing is more relevant than ever. Its message aside, the filmmaking warrants the accolades it has received over the years, and its reputation has grown considerably as one of the great American motion pictures. While Spike Lee has gone on to make many excellent movies, including last year’s Oscar-nominated BlacKkKlansman,...

Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” is 30 years old. Starring Lee himself, along with Danny Aiello (his role was originally offered to Robert De Niro), John Turturro, Giancarlo Esposito, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Richard Edson, Bill Nunn, and Samuel L. Jackson, in a cast of around 30 characters, the film marked the feature acting debuts of stand-up comedians Martin Lawrence and Steve Park, as well as dancer/choreographer Rosie Perez. For several of the actors, it was the first or second of many collaborations with Lee, notably Turturro, who has appeared in as many as nine Spike Lee Joints. Most of the cast, which included some future stage and screen award nominees and winners, went on to have quite prolific careers, and have Lee to thank for helping to boost their work prospects. A few of them have sadly since passed. Here’s a look at where the actors who...

Napoleon Dynamite helmer Jared Hess returns to screens December 11th with his latest slice of oddity. Sam Rockwell stars as as the titular Don Verdean, a Biblical archaeologist hired by a small town church to bring ancient artefacts from the Middle East back to the Us to restore the church to relevance. This goes every bit as strangely as you'd expect in a Jared Hess film.Amy Ryan, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Bibb, Stephen Park, Will Forte, and Danny McBride also star in this one and while mileage certainly varies for people where Hess is concerned I've always loved the guy and the freshly released trailer made me laugh out loud more than once. In the summer of 1989, while Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" was sounding a thunderclap in cinemas, a troupe of largely black actors and comedians came together on a Fox sound stage in Century City to produce a sketch comedy show aimed at servicing a minority point of view that had been underrepresented by the medium. With producer Keenen Ivory Wayans at the helm, fresh off the success of his 1988 Blaxploitation parody film "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka," eight individuals — a then-unknown Jim Carrey along with Kelly Coffield, Kim Coles, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier, T'Keyah "Crystal" Keymáh and Wayans' siblings Damon and Kim — filmed the first episodes of "In Living Color." The show debuted on April 15, 1990, and 25 years later, Damon Wayans can't help but remember first and foremost that he had hair back then. "I remember the pain of getting fired from 'Saturday Night Live' and feeling that I needed redemption,...

Chances are you have not seen Snowpiercer yet due to its limited availability and release fiasco. If so, skip this interview and watch the film first. Go in clean, because Snowpiercer really is as good as everyone’s telling you. Based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, it is essentially a dark (often literally) sci-fi thriller about a perpetual motion train carrying the last remnants of society after a global ice age. Themes of cruelty, disparity and sacrifice abound, and strong, sometimes horrific visual references bombard the screen. The exceptional costume design by Catherine George ties all this together in a way that is readable and indicative, yet never threatens to take over the film.
Catherine George, however unintentionally, seems to specialise in this form of costume design; you only need to watch We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) to gather this. This is not to say her work is showy in any way.

Due to the power of movies we all have had the pleasure of seeing our world come to a crumbling end. From demonic annihilation to worldwide environmental disasters to crippling epidemics, we have seen humanity fall in nearly every way possible. Bon Joon-ho’s latest film Snowpiercer is another addition to the very crowded field of post-apocalyptic thrillers. This ambitious take—on life after a failed global warming experiment kills the entire world population except a small group aboard highly advanced train—shows originality and ingenuity can still permeate in the world of genre films.
Snowpierecer’s concept is the thematic version of an optical illusion. Depending on your point of view it...
