Beau should not sleep. Earlier in the day, when he tried to leave his apartment to see his mother, Beau left his door open with the keys still in the lock. When he returned to the door after turning back to retrieve a forgotten item, his keys were gone.
Worse, when Beau asks a man in the hallway about the missing keys, the passerby shouts, “You’re fucked, pal!”
Yes, the above scene does occur in Beau is Afraid, last year’s weirdo epic starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular disturbed man. But before he made Beau is Afraid as his third feature film, director Ari Aster introduced Billy Mayo as the fearful lead of his short movie, “Beau.”
Although Beau is Afraid benefits from a much larger budget and A-list stars, including Patti LuPone as Beau’s famous mother and Parker Posey as his childhood love, and although it...

Office Space is celebrating its 25th anniversary following its delayed path to success, although hopefully no one would get their ass kicked for saying something like that.
Released Feb. 19, 1999, director Mike Judge’s enduring and endlessly quotable workplace satire follows computer programmer Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston), who decides to stop caring about his day job and teams up with Initech co-workers Michael Bolton (David Herman) and Samir Nagheenanajar (Ajay Naidu) to defraud the company. The Fox comedy — featuring such on-the-rise performers as Jennifer Aniston, John C. McGinley, Gary Cole and Stephen Root — collected just $10 million at the time but became a cult favorite after finding a following through cable and home video.
Other standouts from the cast include Richard Riehle as engineer liaison Tom Smykowski, who defends his job (“I have people skills!”) to Paul Willson and McGinley as the two Bobs who are put in charge of layoffs. In...

"I'm not from Hell, I'm from Indiana!" A festival promo trailer crashes in for an indie sci-fi comedy called Invaders From Proxima B, made by actor / filmmaker Ward Roberts. It's premiering in the next week at the 2023 Austin Film Festival in Texas, though has no other release dates set - it'll be touring at more fests. When a cute, wise-cracking alien from Proxima B named Chuck crash lands in their backyard, the Jankins family must work together to save their new fuzzy friend from a dangerous array of weirdos that show up in hot pursuit. The stakes couldn't be higher for Chuck, the Jankins, and maybe even all of planet Earth. It's super wacky – when the puppet alien shows up gets really fun. Reminds me of the kind of mega low budget, kooky and amusing early films the Duplass Bros or Kevin Smith made early on. Ward Roberts also stars with Samantha Sloyan,...

I remember hearing Viggo Mortensen on an episode of Here’s The Thing with Alec Baldwin where he came off as the rare combination of pretentious but likable. A man who carried himself as an intelligent, soft-spoken guy who liked arthouse movies and votes Green Party, he had just the right amount of movie-star charisma to pull off his slightly self-satisfied air. So essentially I want to root for the guy, especially when tackling moviemaking.
For a second I thought he was capitalizing on it in his second directorial effort. The opening two shots of The Dead Don’t Hurt showed some promise: 1) a man riding horseback in knight’s armor, followed by 2) a long take fixating on a dying Vicky Krieps’ face. From there I thought Mortensen was maybe, as director, smuggling a surrealism and slow cinema inspired by collaborator Lisandro Alonso into TIFF-premiere filler. Yet that mystery and formal precision soon ends.

When you think of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," you probably think of the hit TV series that introduced an entire generation of '90s kids to the metaphor of high school being like a horror movie. But if you happened to come of age in the early '90s, you might well remember your first introduction to the character of The Slayer coming with 1992's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie.
Written by Joss Whedon, who eventually became showrunner on the TV series, and directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui, the film starred Kristy Swanson as the titular slayer and was a decidedly lighthearted affair, especially in comparison to the show that succeeded it. Co-starring Luke Perry and featuring a surprisingly impressive cast that included Donald Sutherland, Rutger Hauer, Hilary Swank, and Paul Reubens, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" '92 debuted to unfavorable reviews and was sadly relegated to a footnote in "Buffy...

... Well then! If you've just watched tonight's episode of HBO's "Barry," entitled "it takes a psycho", then you know that for a show that is rarely screwing around, this episode really and truly did not screw around. If you haven't watched, just be warned (even more than usual) that surprises are plenty this week, so spoilers ahoy.
As you'll likely recall, last week's installment wrapped with Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) escaping prison thanks to a botched hit job (involving a hitman/podcaster played by Fred Armisen). So it's no surprise that this week starts in prison, as the grumpy warden (Richard Riehle) instigates a beatdown of Barry's old friend Monroe Fuches (Stephen Root), presuming the latter let the would-be assassins inside. Though Fuches did know about the attempt on Barry's life and tried to warn the now-infuriated guards, he of course has no idea where Barry might be at the moment.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 4, Episode 3, “You’re Charming.”]
Weird things happen on “Barry.” They always have. For all the talk about how the show has gotten darker with each passing season, part of that comes from how that weirdness gets woven into the fabric of the show. In the beginning, the oddities that popped up were almost novelties, things designed to distract from the fact that one man’s soul was being siphoned away with each passing job. “Ronny/Lily” was something to be unpacked, a mystery where you could still find a weird sense of cathartic comfort in Stephen Root shouting from behind the wheel of a car.
Over time, that morphed into something else. By last season’s “710N,” the wild, out-of-the-blue parts of “Barry” became more dangerous. A highway chase was not only the show tackling an action setpiece on a grander scale, it was a bigger threat. By the time Hank (Anthony Carrigan) finds...

About a year and a half ago, Texas Chainsaw 3D (watch it Here) star Alexandra Daddario gave an interview where she had some interesting things to say about her time working on the film (which just celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this month). Daddario revealed that she had tried to get the “Do you thing, cuz!” line cut, and that she is very grateful to have been in the movie. Not just because she was having trouble getting work at the time, but also because there were severe issues to overcome during the production and it taught her “what happens when things go wrong, what happens when things go right, why did they go wrong, why shouldn’t they have happened, how does the studio get involved when something goes wrong, how studios interact with projects.” Now, during a new interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Daddario seems to have...

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Chris checks into the hospital from hell with Rob Zombie's "Halloween II.")
Rob Zombie's "Halloween" is not very good. Of course, anyone daring to remake John Carpenter is facing a Herculean task, but Zombie proved surprisingly ill-equipped for the job. To be fair, the filmmaker has a great eye for visuals. It's his screenwriting that needs serious work, and his "Halloween" is loaded with some weak storytelling and terrible dialogue.
So I wasn't exactly jumping for joy when Zombie returned for "Halloween II." But surprise, surprise, the film turned out to be a vast improvement over the original. Sure, the lousy dialogue is still there. But, freed from having to imitate Carpenter's story beats, Zombie gets to go wild, unleashing a strange,...

"Someone will ask questions..." Uncork'd Ent has released an official trailer for an indie horror-thriller film titled Digging to Death, from writer / director Michael P. Blevins. "This June, dig up the past." David Van Owen moves into a mysterious house and discovers a box buried in his backyard, filled with 3 million dollars and a fresh corpse. What does he decide to do next? David hides the money in the house, only to be stalked by the buried body... Starring Ford Austin, Tom Fitzpatrick, Rachel Alig, Ken Hudson Campbell, Richard Riehle, with Clint Jung, Sumeet Dang, and Bryan Dodds. Yeah, this isn't the most original idea, but that creepy old dead guy haunting him makes this look like something unique and, dare I say, kind of fun. Freaky and disturbing, but with some awkward fun tossed in. Why not? It's the horror genre after all. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Michael P.

Headlined by Tony Todd, writer-director Andy Stapp’s Destination Marfa sees four lifelong friends veer off the road and venture into a small West Texas town known as Marfa.
While on a road trip from a long weekend at the Terlingua cookoff, four lifelong friends decide to veer off road and venture into a small West Texas town known as Marfa. What attracted them to do so? Could it be the strange unexplained ghost lights that Marfa is known for? While on a fuel stop they meet two very strange employees of a secluded gas station. One of them offers them a chance to look into their future by pulling a ticket from his counter top 25 cent token fortune telling machine. What does it say? Can they trust it? When they enter Marfa, Texas they realize almost immediately that something’s off. Why is this town so odd? Why are very peculiar things happening?...

"There is no way that this low life's getting into Heaven whilst I'm stuck here." Uncork'd Ent. has released an official trailer for an indie horror comedy called Limbo, the latest from indie filmmaker Mark Young. The high concept, low budget film is about a murderer who dies and finds himself on trial in Hell, caught between a bitter prosecutor and an inexperienced defense attorney. The entire setup is based around being in "limbo" with a colorful cast of characters. James Purefoy stars a Lucifer, with Lucian Charles Collier as Balthazar, plus Veronica Cartwright, Rebekah Kennedy, Scottie Thompson, Peter Jacobson, Lauryn Canny, Richard Riehle, and Lew Temple. This look that bad, but doesn't look that good either. Here's the first official trailer (+ new poster) for Mark Young's Limbo, direct from YouTube: A murderer named Jimmy (Lew Temple) finds himself on trial in Hell, caught between a bitter prosecutor and an inexperienced defense attorney.

Movies traditionally are released in theaters on Wednesdays and Fridays, but come Monday, April 20, “4/20” the movie will be released on Vimeo on the date that’s considered a perennial stoner holiday — it has even greater significance this month seeing as the year is 2020.
Producer Corey Moss, a veteran of MTV and management company Principato-Young, says the film is taking its lead from “Super Troopers 2,” which opened on April 20, 2018, and went on to gross $18.4 million at the U.S. box office. “Whoever picked that release date was brilliant,” he says. “Back then, we jokingly said we should make a weed movie for next year’s 4/20. Then we jokingly said we should call it 4/20. Then we jokingly said it should be like ‘Love Actually’ or the Garry Marshall holiday movies, with multiple storylines that interweave.”
Actually, “4/20” has more in common with Kevin Smith’s stoner classic “Clerks” and Netflix’s series “Disjointed.

Apologies if this offends anyone, but faith based films almost exclusively are terrible. In fact, they’re ripe for parody. After all, movies made on the cheap, appealing to an audience that only cares about quality in the broadest sense of the word, and can almost be assured of turning a profit, are easy targets. The upcoming film Faith Based takes a comedy and satirical look at what would happen if a couple of regular guys, on the hunt for a quick buck, opted to make one themselves. The premise has a lot of potential, which luckily for audiences, leads to a charming flick with more on its mind than simply having a laugh at this inherently silly genre. The movie is, as mentioned, a comedy, centering on two fairly dim-witted friends. Luke (Luke Barnett) and Tanner (Tanner Thomason) are buds who love cinema, aren’t the smartest, and need to make some money.

Rob Zombie's Firefly family returns for a real day of the dead in the 3 From Hell trailer.
Free the three! Now we can have a real day of the dead. Just when you thought there was no justice in this world, the first full-length 3 From Hell trailer promises a bloodbath and a devil of a time. The odds were a million to one against Capt. Spaulding (Sid Haig), Otis Firefly (Bill Moseley), and Vera-Ellen "Baby" Firefly (Sheri Moon Zombie) surviving their standoff with the police at their last rampage, but with a little faith, nothing is impossible.
3 From Hell is a family movie. The Firefly family has a deadly tradition going back to 2003, with Rob Zombie's directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses making way for the 2005 sequel The Devil's Rejects. Written and directed by Rob Zombie, the trilogy tells the story of Dr. Satan and his merry band of murderous misfits.

Rob Zombie has officially blown the lid off 3 From Hell, and we couldn’t be more excited.
Kicking off the week in style, Zombie sent horror fans into a tizzy just yesterday with the delightfully gruesome teaser trailer, which offered a sneak peek into the twisted world of his follow-up to The Devil’s Rejects. And though many are already sold on the idea of 3 From Hell, the musician-cum-filmmaker has since announced that a new, extended preview will be released next month – just in time for the film’s theatrical release in September.
That’s right; we can expect 3 From Hell to hit the big screen in three months’ time, by which point we should have a better understanding of Zombie’s master plan for Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), Otis (Bill Moseley), and Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie).
Here’s a little status report, courtesy of the director’s Facebook...
