Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer finds stand-up comedian Donny (Gadd) living with his ex-girlfriend’s mother (Nina Sosanya) and working at a Camden pub to supplement his failing career. When, one day, Martha (Jessica Gunning), an overweight middle-aged woman who claims to be a successful lawyer but can’t afford a cup of tea, sits down at the bar, Donny offers it to her on the house. That cup of tea will initiate a years-long “relationship” that will initially flatter Donny’s ego but later prove to be both degrading and petrifying.
The series was adapted from Gadd’s autobiographical one-man stage show of the same name, and the actor-writer lends Donny such a piercingly unique voice. Gadd narrates his own horror story with a snappy matter-of-factness, like he’s reluctant to ruminate on one stomach-churning detail for too long before moving on to the next, and a self-awareness that’s never navel-gazing.

There are few shows on television quite like “Baby Reindeer.” The fact that Richard Gadd’s dramatic miniseries dropped on Netflix with little to no promotion makes it feel even more distinct.
Based on Gadd’s autobiographical one-man show of the same name, the seven-episode series follows Donny Dunn, an aspiring standup comedian and current bartender who makes the grave mistake of offering a woman a cup of tea on the house. That nice gesture upends his world, as “Baby Reindeer” chronicles one woman’s growing obsession with him, the complexities of both having a stalker and being flattered by her attention, and how Donny’s view of himself came to be so low. Both unflinchingly honest and at times bizarre, the series follows in the footsteps of art such as Michaela Coel’s “I May Destroy You,” Hannah Gadsby’s “Nannette” and Abby McEnany’s “Work in Progress.”

Are disaster movies about climate change getting more realistic, or is the real world simply starting to resemble a disaster movie about climate change? To judge by Mahalia Belo’s “The End We Start From,” a despairing and all-too-conceivable thriller in which an unnamed woman (Jodie Comer) struggles to protect her newborn baby after a massive flood makes the whole of England go a little “Children of Men,” the answer to that question is regrettably “both.” Ah, how I long for the days when a Hollywood blockbuster about Jake Gyllenhaal trying to survive a now-routine New York weather system was marketed as a piece of escapism.

"I don't understand what this rejection of the world means." Republic Pictures & Paramount have revealed an official trailer for an indie survival thriller called The End We Start From, from filmmaker Mahalia Belo. This premiered at the Toronto & London Film Festivals this fall, with a wide release in the US set for January. A "futuristic fable about a brand-new mother navigating a flooded world" starring Jodie Comer. Adapted from Megan Hunter's prophetic 2017 novel, Mahalia Belo and screenwriter Alice Birch model their film on the author's spare, elliptical prose, keeping the disaster just off-screen and letting their actors wear the pressure and tension of the story on their faces as their world gets a little smaller and a lot scarier. Also starring Joel Fry, Katherine Waterston, Gina McKee, Nina Sosanya, Mark Strong, and Benedict Cumberbatch. This seems like a movie that literally addresses the question of – should I still have...

It begins as a spatter of heavy rainfall — nothing out of the ordinary for acclimatized Brits, for whom an actual storm can even be cozily welcome after days of noncommittal drear and drizzle. But then it doesn’t stop, deep-set wet turns to invasive flooding, and what seemed a mere bout of inclement weather has swept you — and countless others like you — out of house and home. Megan Hunter’s speculative novel “The End We Start From” was a neat metaphor for the larger threat in seemingly minor signifiers of climate crisis; briskly adapted by screenwriter Alice Birch, Mahalia Belo’s fine film version matches its pragmatic, coolly urgent vision of a world coming apart slowly, gradually, and then all at once.

In a vague near-future world that resembles our own, London faces a devastating flood. At the same time, a young woman (Jodie Comer) is giving birth to her first child. The birth is intercut with the flood, juxtaposing the miracle of life with the death of an old world. Unable to return to her home, she and her partner (Joel Fry) flee the city with their newborn to be with his parents (Mark Strong, Nina Sosanya). Things aren’t much better for the young couple in the countryside. Food is scarce and the populace is erupting with violence fueled by the fear of starvation. And yet, for a moment, the family seems to thrive on love alone, bonded by the joy of having a new baby.
But as the young woman struggles to nourish and care for her child, her partner buckles under the stress and pressure of being a...

There’s a misconception that the British are a stoic people who just might get quite cross in the event of a zombie apocalypse. But the truth is rather different, as was shown in 2005, when six people were hospitalized and a man stabbed when an Ikea store in North London put 500 leather sofas on sale for less than 60 bucks each and a riot ensued.
In that sense, Mahalia Belo’s intriguing debut The End We Start From is very much a British disaster movie, speculating just how quickly the country’s perceived veneer of respectability would evaporate in a crisis. But, more than that, it’s a dreamlike study of what it means to give birth, how life-changing the experience is and the strain it puts on relationships. It would make a great double bill with Children of Men.
When we first meet the Woman (Jodie Comer), she is heavily pregnant and running a bath.

The End We Start From, the debut feature from acclaimed television director Mahalia Belo, offers all the standard elements of a drama centered on a near-apocalyptic event. Early in the film, unrelenting rain pounds London, the power goes out, and water eventually trickles under the door of an unnamed pregnant woman played by Jodie Comer. She is alone in the house, tending to herself while her husband is out-of-town. Soon that trickle blasts the front door off its hinges, and before we know it she is in labor at the hospital. These scenes in the outside world are appropriately chaotic––and feel like sequences audiences have seen many, many times before.

The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s book, Good Omens, became a big hit when the show hit Prime Video. This summer saw the release of Good Omens 2, the follow-up to the successful first run. Michael Sheen has become the face of the character of Aziraphale, but Gaiman has recently revealed in a Tumblr post that he originally had another actor in mind as the angel. A fan asked him if anyone else came close to playing the roles of the duo. In a response, it was unveiled that Sheen was actually intended for Crowley, and Gaiman wanted Hugh Grant to embody Aziraphale.
ComingSoon.net reports that Gaiman explained, “I remember spending a lot of time pondering who Aziraphale could be back when Crowley was going to be Michael, and I think Hugh Grant was a leading contender in my head, but then somewhere in the middle of writing episode...

Commentary‘Good Omens’ Season 2 delivers not only on its promise of a whimsical adventure but also on the desire for deeper queer storylines and representation.Good Omens returns with a delightful Season 2 that continues to explore the heartwarming bond between angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tennant). The chemistry between the lead actors is as strong as ever and remains the driving force of the show. Season 2 picks up with the sudden appearance of Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) at Aziraphale’s doorstep, leading to an adventure that Heaven and Hell cannot ignore. Good Omens is based on Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s hit 1990 novel, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. While plans for a sequel had been discussed between the prolific writers, Pratchett’s passing in 2015 left fans uncertain about its realisation. However, Gaiman’s determination prevailed and this time, he collaborated...

Long ago in a time before the pandemic (2019) Amazon released a show based on Neil Gaiman’s book Good Omens. Intended to be a limited series, the show was a hit so they opted for even more. However, talking to stars David Tennant and Michael Sheen, multiple seasons were always in the cards. Despite Gaiman’s material taking up the first season, the writers plotted along much further. So while I had very limited time to be able to talk with the two gentlemen, they were a wealth of knowledge. Make sure you check out my conversation with Michael Sheen and David Tennant above. Note: this was recorded before the SAG/AFTRA strike.

This article contains spoilers for "Good Omens" season 2.
There's a lot of overlap between the "Good Omens" and "Doctor Who" fanbases. After all, Crowley is played by David Tennant, the same guy who played (and is now playing again) the time-traveling alien Doctor. If that wasn't enough, "Good Omens" also co-stars Michael Sheen as Aziraphale, an actor who played the malevolent alien House in the "Doctor Who" episode "The Doctor's Wife." That episode was written by Neil Gaiman, co-creator and showrunner of "Good Omens." Director Douglas MacKinnon has also worked on both shows.
"Good Omens" season 2 takes the connections between the shows even further. Peter Davison, who played the fifth Doctor back in 1982, shows up here to play the biblical figure Job. Job's son, Ennon, is played by David Tennant's real-life son, Ty Tennant, who also happens to be Peter Davison's grandson. The fly Beelzebub gives Gabriel is described as "bigger on the inside,...

Spoiler Alert: This recap contains spoilers from the Season 2 finale of “Good Omens,” now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
In the 2006 reprinted edition of Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett’s 1990 classic “Good Omens,” the co-authors did a Q&a in which they answered the question “Why isn’t there a sequel?” like this:
“We played around with ideas, but we could never work up the enthusiasm. Besides, we wanted to do other things. Recently, though, we’ve both been wondering if ‘never again’ is set in stone. So there might be a sequel one day. Maybe. Perhaps. Who knows? We don’t.”
Well, now we do know, because on July 28, Amazon Prime Video dropped the second season of its TV adaptation of “Good Omens,” which sees Michael Sheen and David Tennant reprise their roles as apocalypse-fighting, millennia-long best friends: the fussy angel and rare-book dealer Aziraphale and fast-living demon Crowley.

So much for happy endings, huh? Now that we've finished burning through the second season of Neil Gaiman's Prime Video adaptation of "Good Omens," it's time to regroup and process exactly what just went down in the six-episode continuation of Crowley (David Tennant) and Aziraphale's (Michael Sheen) story. In this case, that most likely means screaming at God (or Gaiman) about the show's abrupt pivot from a fluffy, rom-com story into an angst-riddled drama in the last ten minutes. Luckily, though, Crowley and Aziraphale's big breakup seems to be an unhappy middle to a still-unfolding story.
The first five episodes of the new season were giddy and adorable, like the TV equivalent of walking on a cloud even at their darkest moments. Sure, there were obstacles in the way of Aziraphale and Crowley's domestic bliss, but the amnesiac Gabriel (Jon Hamm...

If you’ve been counting down the days for the second season of Good Omens so fervently that the mere thought of its arrival makes you exclaim “I am having a moment here!” then you might need to have a sit down: Good Omen Season Two Is Finally Here.
If you’re new to Good Omens, now’s the time to catch up: this fantasy series is based on the 1990 book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, and stars a demon, Crowley and an angel, Aziraphale who are unlikely best buds/soulmates.
Season one saw them try to prevent the end of the world after the antichrist is born, and as for season two? Well, Crowley and Aziraphale are only just getting used to being exiled from their respective heavenly/hellish bosses when Aziraphale’s former boss, Archangel Gabriel turns up dazed, confused and totally nude. It’s up to...

Good Omens season two is a story of friendship and love and, to quote Terry Pratchett’s Moving Pictures, “Passione in a Worlde Gone Madde!” Gorgeous-looking, perfectly cast, and full of joy, it’s like a warm hug and a mug of hot chocolate… with a little macabre horror and sketch show comedy bobbing beneath the surface.
Good Omens season one was based on a standalone novel written by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, which meant that it was a complete story. That’s why most of its characters and plotlines – Adam and pals, Agnes Nutter, Anathema and the Four Motorcycle Riders of the Apocalypse – don’t appear in season two.
But more than any of those, Good Omens season one was the story of the friendship between the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale. They’re the true protagonists of the book, and indisputably the stars of the TV show,...

In the second season of “Good Omens,” which hits Prime Video on Friday, Michael Sheen’s angel Aziraphale and David Tennant’s demon Crowley team up again to help angel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) who shows up at Aziraphale’s book shop with no memory — and no clothes.
And, for complicated reasons, they must also try to make two local shopkeepers fall in love, which proves to be much more difficult that they imagine.
As Sheen told TheWrap (in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began), “It turns out trying to make two people love each other is as hard, if not harder, than averting the apocalypse.”
Added Tennant, “They think that it’s gonna take seconds, and everything else will fall into place. But of course, humans and all their rich tapestry of contradictions that they are gets in the way.”
The matchmaking targets are Maggie (Maggie Service), who...

Prime Video has released the official trailer for the second season of the comedy ‘Good Omens.’
Michael Sheen and David Tennant are back as Aziraphale and Crowley. Here the pair may have helped stop the Apocalypse, but that doesn’t appear to have done them any favours with Heaven or Hell.
Now they must re-team to solve a mystery that takes in all of heaven and hell – seems the archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) has gone missing.
Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith, Niamh Walsh and Derek Jacobi are all back for the new run. They’re joined this time by Nina Sosanya, Miranda Richardson, Dame Sian Phillips, Tim Downie, Pete Firman, Andi Osho and Alex Norton. Maggie Service, Quelin Sepulveda and Shelley Conn also star.
Neil Gaiman continues as executive producer and co-showruns, along with executive producer Douglas Mackinnon who also returned to direct.

Good Omens fans are losing their minds on social media, and frankly, we don’t blame them. They’ve been waiting two long years for the second series, and this time it’s completely unknown territory: while series one adapted Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s 1990 comedic novel about the end of the world, series two is the brand-new invention of Gaiman and Cabin Pressure writer John Finnemore. Who knows where Good Omens’ much-loved central characters – the angel Aziraphale (aka Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (aka David Tennant) – will end up?
Amazon Prime Video’s social media has been slowly building fans into a frenzy by drip-feeding the release date announcement (July 28th) followed by Easter egg-filled posters and series two opening credits.
And now – with mere weeks to go – the Good Omens series 2 trailer is here! Watch it below:
Lots to unpack, there – so let’s get into it:...

Around eight months ago, we heard that the apocalyptic thriller The End We Start From, an adaptation of author Megan Hunter’s 2017 debut novel (you can pick up a copy of Hunter’s novel at This Link), and was filming in London. The Prime Video series "Good Omens," based on the novel "Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, is a delightfully irreverent romp through the apocalypse. The demon Crowley (David Tennant) and angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) are the unlikeliest of friends, but they still manage to stop the apocalypse together despite their many differences. Sure, there was a mix-up with the infant antichrist that led to a much sillier apocalypse than expected, but everything turned out okay in the end, and now the angel-demon duo are coming back for another, all-new adventure.

Every role I’ve done seems to be something where my dad has to die,” says Amir Wilson, wincing a little. His characters have certainly been through a lot. As plucky would-be knight Tiuri, he didn’t have much to laugh about in Netflix’s fantasy series The Letter for the King, in which his adoptive father dies trying to protect him. "It would be about six episodes," Gaiman revealed. "Each 45 minutes." And while the show already has one nice angel in Aziraphale, the...
