Masters of the Air was a labor of love for executive producers Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. The Apple TV+ series marks the third and final installment of the trio’s war drama miniseries, after Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
The series took three years to create and cost between $250 million and $300 million to produce, including a hefty $60 million in Covid compliance costs to film during the pandemic. The result was an epic nine-part series with 325 speaking parts and an amazing cast of up-and-coming actors.
“The best stories are from history,” said Goetzman during a discussion at the Deadline and Apple TV+ event Inside the Finale, joined by series cast members Barry Keoghan, Callum Turner, Rafferty Law, Josiah Cross, Nate Mann and Anthony Boyle. “Nonfiction is always more fascinating than fiction, and there’s no greater stories of human cost, triumph, passion, love… the biggest story of...

Alison Brie’s character Amy in “Apples Never Fall” does not operate like your typical eldest sibling. She lacks a steady source of income, is emotionally erratic and her housing situation is one shared with a group of graduate students.
But as the Peacock limited series’ third episode shows, she’s also perhaps the only Delaney with a healthy amount of emotional intelligence.
In the TV adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s 2021 novel of the same name, Joy Delaney (Annette Bening), matriarch of a competitive brood of tennis players, goes missing, prompting the four children and their father to revisit old wounds and unearth family secrets.
Episode 3, “Amy” serves as a bottle episode for the eldest daughter — following the structure lined up with episodes for Logan (Conor Merrigan Turner), Brooke (Essie Randles), Troy (Jake Lacy) and patriarch Stan (Sam Neill). In retracing her steps before her mother’s disappearance, one major...

“Masters of the Air” soared to become Apple TV+’s highest-watched series launch ever when the first episodes dropped in January. While it might seem like a no-brainer that the team behind “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific” — including Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman — would hit it out of the park with a new World War II series, it wasn’t plain sailing, in large part thanks to Covid, which resulted in numerous delays. “It made the production very difficult,” Goetzman told Variety ahead of the series launch.
But also, in keeping with Apple TV+’s low-key publicity strategy, “Masters of the Air” somehow debuted on the streamer with minimal publicity, despite the fact that in the period between being pre- and post-production its key cast, including Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan and Ncuti Gatwa had been propelled from jobbing actors to leading men.

In the opening scene of Apples Never Fall, Joy Delaney (Annette Bening) takes a leisurely bike ride through West Palm Beach, Florida. She’s got the time, having recently retired after decades of coaching tennis alongside her husband, Stan (Sam Neill). Joy cycles by palm trees and mansions and stops to browse stands of impossibly perfect fruit. But as she passes tennis courts bustling with players, her mouth curves into a wistful frown.
A sense of melancholy nags at the superficial idyll of Joy’s excursion, only to burst into outright dread when we see her bike overturned in the street, its back wheel still spinning and its frame splattered with blood, and Joy nowhere to be found. This scene introduces an alluring air of mystery regarding Joy’s inner life and the nature of her seemingly utopian environment. Exclusive: Melanie Marnich is a huge fan of Big Little Lies scribe Liane Moriarty’s work, but when showrunning an adaptation of Moriarty’s Apples Never Fall, Marnich blocked the HBO hit from her consciousness almost entirely.
Peacock’s Apples Never Fall, which stars 2024 Oscar-nominee Annette Bening, launches tomorrow and is in international competition at next week’s Series Mania, was made with a Big Little Lies-free lens, Marnich explained to Deadline.
“I admire Big Little Lies and think it’s brilliant but I had to literally put it out my mind,” she said in the days leading up to the Lille market. “I knew I had to quite quickly ignore all [Moriarty’s past work] and ask what this book wants to be and what the best way is to honor it. How do I ignore all that came before to find the best voice and vision for this translation?”

When a World War II drama series about airmen features the likes of Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan and Callum Turner, it’s reasonable to presume that one of them would be playing the story’s quintessential hotshot pilot. Instead, that honor belongs to Nate Mann, who portrays Lieutenant Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal, one of the most decorated real-life B-17 pilots to serve in WWII, on Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air. Rosie had already established a successful career as a lawyer in New York until the attack on Pearl Harbor eventually led him to Laredo Air Force Base, where he developed his crack piloting skills.
Knowing full well the significance of Rosenthal both on the screen and in real life, Mann refused to gloss over the details of the B-17 and the many responsibilities that a bomber pilot has before, during and after a flight. So he took the words...

While you weren’t watching, Amazon’s Prime Video quietly blossomed into a haven for adult animation. The streaming service’s latest addition to its lineup, the sci-fi comedy “The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy,” is the brainchild of Cirocco Dunlap, whose résumé includes Netflix’s “Russian Doll” and “Big Mouth.” The show, which is now streaming, follows the adventures of two alien doctors, Klak and Sleech, as they treat a myriad of strange illnesses and maladies afflicting the brilliant and unique beings that populate the titular galaxy.
While the show’s writers are clearly having fun trying to stretch the limits of the imagination, the series also dedicates a significant amount of its runtime to telling relatable stories about universally understood medical conditions, too, like anxiety. The result is a well-rounded, enjoyable comedy that deserves your attention. When you toss in an impressive voice cast that also includes Kieran Culkin,...

Masters of the Air is the newest tribute to World War II veterans from Spielberg and Hanks. All of their projects on the subject, including Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and The Pacific, concentrate on different aspects of the Great War and make for good viewing companion pieces. As the new series follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany, the review from our own Alex Maidy spoke highly of the show. He stated, “It is unlikely that any series will equal the acclaim that Band of Brothers achieved. Still, the blend of feature film directors and a cast of actors more than up to the task, Masters of the Air is a powerful companion to that HBO series and ranks slightly higher than The Pacific.

Peacock has released the full trailer of Apples Never Fall, the limited series starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill, based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel.
“You can spend a lifetime with someone as a wife or as a mother, but you can never really know who they are,” Bening’s Joy says in the trailer.
The series revolves around the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family, anchored by former tennis coaches Stan (Neill) and Joy (Bening), who have sold their successful tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives.
Jake Lacy, Alison Brie, Conor Merrigan-Turner, Essie Randles play Stan and Joy’s adult children in the 7-episode series written and executive produced by Melanie Marnich.
The logline for the show says that “everything changes when a wounded young woman knocks on Joy and Stan’s door, bringing the excitement they’ve been missing.

The World War II drama series "Masters of the Air," created by John Shiban and John Orloff and currently airing on AppleTV+, takes place in 1943 and follows Usaaf majors as they are transferred to England to aid the Allied war effort. Austin Butler plays Major Gale Cleven and Callum Turner plays Major John Egan, both real-life Usaaf pilots, and the series is based on the biographical book "Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany," written by Donald L. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg’s collaboration on Saving Private Ryan spawned the critically acclaimed HBO series Band of Brothers, which chronicled the infantry troops on the ground in Europe during World War II. It was a massive hit, followed by The Pacific, an equally great series focused on the Pacific Theater during the war. Now, the producers are back with a third installment in their chronicle of WWII, Masters of the Air. Focused on the United States air forces during the 1940s, this series is bound to be another substantial win for Spielberg, Hanks, and all involved. Read our rave review here!

Apple TV’s new World War II epic Masters of the Air has faced a very steep climb to take flight, creatively speaking.
First, it had to live up to the legacy of its extraordinary predecessor, HBO’s 2001 limited series Band of Brothers, which some consider to be their all-time favorite war “movie.” BoB‘s successor, 2010’s The Pacific, showed, if anything, what a high bar the original set. And then there are the challenges of pulling off an air-war epic — it’s inherently tougher (for reasons we’ll get into), and potentially far more expensive (all those special effects shots), than infantry stories. Perhaps that’s why it’s taken more than a decade for Masters of the Air — which is based on Donald L. Miller’s book — to make the journey from concept to screen.

Austin Butler made an appearance at the screening and Q&a for the Apple TV + miniseries Masters of the Air in New York City, sporting a new look from his Elvis days.
Butler, who was best known for his role starring as the late Elvis Presley in the 2022 film Elvis, joined his co-stars Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan, Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann for the event to promote the new World War II miniseries.
Butler appeared with the suit-and-no-tie look. Turner had on a beige sweater with buttons on top, black pants and white shoes. Keoghan showed up wearing a suit with a striped dress shirt. Boyle ditched the suit and wore his dress shirt, black pants, and black shoes. Mann sported a brown sweater and gray pants.

Plot: Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

Masters of the Air is finally here and the fans of The Pacific and Band of Brothers are going crazy over the masterfully created World War II series. Produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the Apple TV+ series revolves around the pilots of bomber planes in the 100th Bomb Group as they fight with everything they have to protect the world from Nazis. Based on a novel by Donald L. Miller titled Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany, the series is adapted for television by John Shiban and John Orloff, it feels like the third entry in the World War II shows by Spielberg and Hanks. Masters of the Air is genuinely one of the best series I have seen in many years, check out my review of the complete series here.

Just a week after wrapping on Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” biopic, Austin Butler arrived in the U.K. to start work on Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ epic World War II drama “Masters of the Air.”
He was joined on the Amblin and Playtone co-production by a cast who, like Butler, are poised to become the next generation of Hollywood leading actors, among them Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan, Anthony Boyle, Ncuti Gatwa and Nate Mann. Together, the band of brothers went through what was effectively a World War II bootcamp, encompassing lessons on everything from marching and dancing to etiquette and history. “It really built such bonds between all of us,” Butler tells Variety of the experience.

Following in the footsteps of Band of Brothers and The Pacific, Masters of the Air is the third entry into a collection of epic World War II limited series from producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Like its “Brothers” before it, Masters of the Air also features a massive cast. And we mean like … massive.
Masters of the Air‘s Wikipedia page reveals that more than 60 actors are credited in this nine-episode Apple TV+ series. Employing that many speaking roles makes sense, of course, as the Allies’ efforts to defeat Hitler and the Axis in WWII required quite a bit of manpower. It’s only nature that any miniseries telling that story would try to capture the scale of it all.
Series producer Gary Goetzman credits casting director Lucy Bevan with getting the impressive cadre of actors together.
“[Casting] had to be done on Zoom basically because it was during Covid.

The saga of Austin Butler’s weird fake Elvis voice continues, as the actor has confirmed that he used a “dialect coach” to help rid himself of the King’s iconic accent after he continued using it well past the premiere of Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 biopic, Elvis.
Sitting down last night for an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Butler confessed that after the three-year process of filming Elvis concluded, he was a bit daunted by what to do next. “I was just trying to remember who I was,” he said. “I was trying to remember what I liked to do. All I thought about was Elvis for three years.”
As Butler explained, his Elvis co-star, Tom Hanks, ultimately provided him with a path forward by offering him a role in the Apple TV+ series, Masters of the Air (the subject of Consequence’s latest cover story). Deciding...

In one episode of the new World War II epic Masters of the Air, a character collapses from exhaustion and sleeps through the events of D-Day, which were so memorably dramatized in Saving Private Ryan. In another, we realize that several characters are being held in the same Pow camp that was the subject of the classic Sixties film The Great Escape, and that our heroes had no idea the escape was happening until well after the fact.

At some point during the so-called peak TV era, someone, somewhere got it in their head that all prestige TV dramas have to unfold like one long movie. Indeed, time and time again, when creators sit down to talk about their new shows, they'll say things like, "We treated this like a 9-hour movie!" But here's the thing: no one wants to watch a 9-hour movie. Why can't TV just be ... TV? "Mad Men," one of the best TV shows of the peak era, told an overarching story but each episode remained, well, episodic. They were like short stories in a collection. The collection added up as a whole, but you could still take the stories individually. And the results were wonderful.

Over 22 years after the premiere of HBO’s landmark Band of Brothers and nearly 14 years after the launch of HBO’s The Pacific (not quite as good as Band of Brothers but still epic longform storytelling), executive producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg have finally brought their third World War II series to the small screen.
It is, mind you, a misnomer to say that anything associated with Masters of the Air is “small,” be it the screen or otherwise. Based on Donald L. Miller’s 2007 book of the same name and developed for Apple TV+ by John Orloff, Masters of the Air is, by any measure, huge. It boasts a mammoth ensemble of young stars in various states of ascension, requires an astonishing quantity of technical effects to achieve its high-flying narrative and, when its key moments land, is equal parts breathtaking, exhilarating and rousingly inspirational.
