ReviewAt the centre of writer-director Maruthi’s story is Sathyaraj, the family patriarch who has been given a 5-week deadline by the doctor, ailing as he is with lung cancer.Krishna SripadaSocial satires run the risk of being didactic, giving us advice that will make us cringe and leave us with nothing but annoyance. However, with Prati Roju Pandaage, Maruthi, the writer and director, focuses more on the comedic elements of a satire, his strength, rather than the preaching. What we get is a not-so-bad family entertainer that is clean, reasonably funny and for the most part crisp; not deep enough though, but I’ve stopped expecting that, so it didn’t pinch me. If you can see past the melodrama in the movie, it is not so bad. At the centre of the story is Sathyaraj, the family patriarch who has been given a 5-week deadline by the doctor,...

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.

The florist who survived San Francisco's Aids epidemic, a triumph for Iranian cinema, and a lifetime achievement gong for Stephen Frears
He's still there
One of the most charismatic characters I've seen all year is in the wistful documentary We Were Here. The film, directed by David Weissman, looks back at how the Aids epidemic swept through San Francisco's gay community in the early 1980s. The story is told through the testimonies of a few survivors, people who were in the city's Castro neighbourhood, before the "gay plague" hit, and are still there now. One such man is Guy Clark, an African American who came to San Francisco in the mid-70s and set up a flower stall on the corner of Castro Street.
Sadly, his blooms became used for thousands of funerals during the worst years of the epidemic, but he himself lives to tell many stories in this very fine documentary.

Stephen Frears recently finished production on his follow to up last year’s Tamara Drewe, Lay the Favorite, so, with this latest news, it could be said he’s is maintaining a pretty steady pace. As Variety reports, the Queen helmer will next work on The Bengali Detective, an adaptation of Philip Cox‘s documentary that debuted just this year. Frears‘ Favorite and High Fidelity scribe D.V. DeVincentis will pen the adaptation; Ridley and Tony Scott will produce through Scott Free Productions.
The original documentary focused on “modern India through the eyes of an unlikely hero,” the protagonist being “intrepid private eye Rajesh Ji as he explores Calcutta’s criminal underworld while pursuing his dream to dance on Indian TV.” I initially cringed a bit at the description, if only because it sounds as though there’s potential for the fake indie fare Fox Searchlight would snatch up in a heartbeat — and,...

Jai Ho? This actually sounds fun. Variety is reporting that Fox Searchlight has lined up acclaimed British director Stephen Frears and screenwriter D.V. DeVincentis, who made High Fidelity (2000) together and are working on Lay the Favorite next, to direct & write the English-language version of The Bengali Detective. A few may remember hearing about this pick-up at Sundance earlier this year, with Searchlight nabbing the "remake" rights, or adaptation rights, as it's a documentary about a real private eye in Calcutta named Rajesh Ji who takes on the criminal underworld while pursuing his dream of dancing on Indian TV. There are already numerous comparisons to Slumdog Millionaire out there, which is fine considering the studio behind it, but I expect this to be something else entirely, as that was mostly a Danny Boyle creation. Frears' recent work has included some milder fare like Tamara Drewe, Chéri and The Queen, though ...

Durham, N.C. - During lunch a filmmaker tells me that of all the festivals he’s attended with his movies, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is the only one he wants to attend as a spectator. He enjoys how the various screens and activities aren’t spread all over the city. There’s a relaxed atmosphere as the festival-goers aren’t hustling hard to get tickets to sold out screenings. Chicago – An overarching feeling of optimism seemed to permeate throughout the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Studios purchased the distribution rights to roughly 30 movies, nearly double the number of films that sold last year. Several of the festival’s most buzzed-about discoveries could easily find a sizable audience outside of the festival circuit, either in theaters or on VOD.
Paramount and Indian Paintbrush certainly appeared confident in their purchase of “Like Crazy,” the latest film from “Douchebag” director Drake Doremus, which flew under nearly everyone’s radar before claiming the festival’s top prize. It follows a young couple, played by Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones, as they attempt to maintain a long distance relationship between America and Britain. The largely improvised film has already been compared to bittersweet romances such as “Before Sunrise” and “Blue Valentine.” Jones is quickly emerging as an actress to watch, a fact solidified by the special...

After her other, more acclaimed Sundance movie Martha Marcy May Marlene got picked up yesterday, Elizabeth Olsen is getting a second chance to infiltrate theaters sometime this year. THR tells us that her horror film Silent House has been picked up by Liddell Entertainment, who has acquired the domestic and most of the international rights for the film. They’re said to be considering giving the domestic rights to an American distributor, with Lionsgate having an interest. Directed by Open Water helmers Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, with a script by Lau, it’s a remake of last year’s Uruguayan film La Casa Muda. Shot in one (supposed) take, the movie was a midnight premiere on Thursday, and was not well received by members of the site who saw it. Still, horror has a wide reach, so its no surprise to see this get picked up.

Fox Searchlight is really on a roll at Sundance. The company has snapped up Homework and Martha Marcy May Marlene, and has now announced that it has bought remake rights to the Indian documentary The Bengali Detective. Wait, a remake of a documentary? How does that work? First up, the film is described on the Sundance programming site [1] as follows: In response to police corruption, the private detective business has become increasingly common in India. The Bengali Detective follows the life of detective Rajesh Ji, who, along with his ragtag team of assistants, investigates cases ranging from counterfeit hair products to a brutal triple murder. When Rajesh is not sleuthing, he has big dreams of competing on a televised national talent show, so he and his detective gang form a dance troupe—which must be seen to be believed—and rehearse for their big audition. Set in chaotic Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta,...

The news keeps rolling in from Park City.
First, Fox Searchlight has made their latest purchase from the Sundance Film Festival, and have picked up remake rights to Philip Cox’s The Bengali Detective. The original film is a feature documentary, that looks at the criminal underworld of Calcutta, through the eyes of private investigator Rajesh Ji. The film doesn’t quite sound like a Searchlight feature, but then toss in the fact that Rajesh has aspirations of dancing on Indian TV, and you see why the impeccably quirky studio has reached out and nabbed this picture. It sounds immensely entertaining, so this is one I definitely can’t wait to check out, and one remake that I’m actually quite interested in seeing.

[1] As the year comes to an end, anybody and everybody are posting their best of the year lists. Most of these lists contain variations of the same 15 or 20 films. To break the mold, some are even posting lists of the best films of the year that you probably haven't seen. I find that even these lists are filled with the same movies. And if you're a film geek reading a site like /Film, chances are you know about most of the movies on these lists. I wanted to do something different and compile a list of the best films of the year that you've never heard of. The selections should be movies that (for the most part) none of your family or friends have heard of, and you might even have to do some extra legwork to get your hands on. It is not an easy task. Even though we...

The strangest thing about Philip Cox's Sundance selected documentary The Bengali Detective? It's all true. This story of an Indian private eye who has formed a dance troupe with his employees seems like the sort of thing created for cult filmdom but nope. It's all legit.
The secrets of Kolkata's citizens are revealed by charismatic, dance obsessed, intrepid detective Rajesh Ji. Mixing the suspense and intrigue of his investigations with dances and songs, this originally styled documentary provides an entertaining and poignant look into the realities of modern India.
The documentary screening at the festival is part of a larger web series backed by Babelgum and you can see the trailer below.
