The holiday season is in full swing, which means December 24th, 9 pm, Eastern Standard Time is gaining on us as we speak. And with all the wintertime hustle and bustle comes the oft-asked question: Is Rent a Christmas movie or not?
The 2005 film adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s hit Broadway musical starts off on Christmas Eve. It chronicles a year in the life of a group of artistic friends living in New York’s East Village in the late 1980s. The final scene takes place on the following Christmas Eve. Andrew Garfield spoke to an audience rich in Spider-Man fans about his career at the Red Sea Film Festival Thursday, sitting alongside Saudi producer and Red Sea Film Foundation CEO Mohammed Al Turki. The two have known each other since Garfield starred in Ramin Bahrani’s 2014 drama “99 Homes,” which Al Turki produced. “I’m currently out of work,” Garfield quipped. “So I’m just here to talk to Mo really.”
“I’m 40 years old now and I still get absolutely petrified,” Garfield said. “I have terrible impostor syndrome. I didn’t know it was a viable option to be an actor. I loved being an athlete. I hated school. I wasn’t strong enough to be a rugby player. It was my mother who suggested I look at doing something creative.”

Almost every year, there is at least one performer who finally takes home that elusive Oscar. In 2022, Jessica Chastain won for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” after two prior nominations, and, in 2020, Joaquin Phoenix prevailed for “Joker” after three previous bids. Expect this year to be no different — we have a whole crew searching for their first Oscar wins after years of nominations, near-misses, or just plain being snubbed. Here are a so far unlucky seven contenders who could break that curse this year and win long overdue Oscars. (We’ve updated this post to include Ryan Gosling after his absence was pointed out by several readers.)

Walter Hill's 1979 cult action thriller "The Warriors" is a favorite among film fans, adapting Sol Yurick's 1965 novel of the same name into an addicting tale about a group of rival gangs in New York City all trying to track down and take out a group known as the Warriors after they're framed for the killing of a powerful gang leader named Cyrus who had been attempting to unite the different groups. The Warriors, miles from home in the Bronx, attempt to make it back to their turf on Coney Island, as the various groups try to kill them once they enter each new territory. Hill's film is as gripping as it is gritty, but Yurick's novel is an even bleaker examination of gang culture and urban rot. So of course, it's only fitting that "The Warriors" would become the subject of a large-scale musical theatre adaptation.

Every year, there are one or two performers who finally land the Oscar wins that they have been long overdue. Last year, Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis both won for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” after years of never quite getting the attention they deserved. Lin-Manuel Miranda wants to keep directing movies, but don’t look for him to mount any large-scale spectacles.
“My responsibility as a filmmaker — and I really hope to make more movies — is to make the weird little musicals that no one else can get made,” he told Rosie Perez during an appearance Tuesday at the Tribeca Festival. His 2021 debut as a director, tick … tick … Boom!, was “a really nice size for me,” the Hamilton creator said. “I really love working with actors. I really love unlocking musical storytelling, and that’s the fun part.”
Miranda maintained he “would never” attempt something as lavish as Wicked, the forthcoming Universal adaptation of the long-running Broadway show. Jon M. Chu, a friend as well as the director of the film adaptation of Miranda’s In The Heights, “is going to do something amazing, and I can’t wait to see it,” he said.

Donald Trump may have stumbled onto a novel copyright issue.
On Jan. 30, the ever-litigious Trump sued Bob Woodward and his publisher Simon & Schuster over the public release of audio recordings from their interviews for Woodward’s book, aptly titled The Trump Tapes. More than eight hours of excerpts from the interviews were published in October as an audiobook, and Trump says he’s entitled to all or most of those profits because he only granted Woodward permission to use his responses in a book. The former president asked for a court order declaring that he owns the copyright to the recordings or, at least, to his responses to the questions in the back-and-forth.
Woodward, in his motion for dismissal, argues that Trump’s claim fails because he hasn’t obtained the requisite copyright registration. While few courts have addressed interview ownership, he also argues it’s “obvious that ownership vests in the journalist,...

Film musicals. You love them or you hate them. Your cringe-o-meter pings into the red or your heart swells with joy, and I’m not convinced there’s any in-between. There once was a time, though, when a simple tune had the ability to stitch itself into the cultural fabric for anyone and everyone. What’s changed?
In recent years, we’ve been served the hip-hop-infused, cultural soup of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton and In the Heights, the chart music bombast of The Greatest Showman, even stabs at nostalgia via Disney reboots and the Golden Era homage La La Land, the inevitable Broadway adaptation of which was announced last week. They tell good stories, have high-budget productions, and rake it in at the box office. At the centre of it all, though, I’m not convinced I hear any truly timeless melodies to be remembered or rebooted for the years to come.

It turns out that a “friendly neighborhood Spider-man,” Andrew Garfield, is particularly neighborly when it comes to board games. The actor, best known for playing comic book hero Spider-Man, recently gave an interview detailing his 10 essential items, including two popular board games.
Garfield then told a funny story about surprising a stranger with an impromptu game.

There is such raw tragedy when it comes to artists like Van Gogh or Jonathan Larson, with success and recognition of their genius only coming after they died. “A Strange Loop” won the much-coveted Tony Award for Best Musical at the 2022 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 12. The tuner from Michael R. Jackson claimed a total of two Tonys at the ceremony. In addition to its strong showing at Radio City Music Hall, “A Strange Loop” is now just the 7th Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner to also win the Tony for Best Musical.
The drama prize at the Pulitzers was first handed out back in 1918, but the voters of that American institution tend to prefer plays rather than song and dance. In 104 years of this award, only 10 musicals have been awarded the Pulitzer: “Of Thee I Sing” (1932), “South Pacific” (1950), “Fiorello!” (1960), “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” (1962), “A Chorus Line” (1976), “Sunday in the Park With George” (1985), “Rent” (1996), “Next to Normal” (2010), “Hamilton” (2016), and “A Strange Loop” (2020). Lin-Manuel Miranda and Bernadette Peters paid tribute to the late, legendary composer Stephen Sondheim at the Tony Awards Sunday.
Miranda, a mentee of Sondheim’s, referenced the composer’s frequent outreach and guidance to those in the theater community. This has been illustrated through the many detailed letters Sondheim sent to fans and collaborators, which have posthumously resurfaced on Instagram.
“Steve touched our lives in a multitude of ways through his immortal music and lyrics, through his teaching and advocacy for young writers and through letters,” Miranda said. “Stephen wrote them to friends, to up-and-coming artists, to countless people he’d never met. He wrote so many letters that you’d wonder when he had time to pick up a Blackwing 602 pencil and write a song. I stand here on behalf of generations of artists he took the time to encourage.”

These letters,...

The limited series races are often some of the best and most competitive at the Emmy Awards because of the exceptional talent these programs, which require only short, finite commitments, tend to attract. That trend continues this year, but there’s also a fun through line in the race for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor. Currently, five of the top six actors (and six of the top 10) in Gold Derby’s combined odds are also veterans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And there are 13 men in total who’ve appeared in the expansive comic-book universe across the entire field.
When we first checked in on the limited actor race in February, “Dopesick” star Michael Keaton led the pack with his layered portrayal of a small-town doctor at the center of the opioid epidemic. The beloved actor, who joined the MCU in 2017 when he played Adrian Toomes, aka Vulture, opposite...

FX’s “Under the Banner of Heaven” is the latest miniseries to explore the grizzly details of a real-life murder case, as television’s true-crime fascination continues to saturate Hollywood. Set in mid-1980s Salt Lake City, Utah, the story centers on devout detective Jeb Pyre (Andrew Garfield) as he unravels the mystery around the murder of a single mother, Brenda Wright Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones), and her 15-month-old child.
What begins as a horrifying tale in a mellow, religion-dominated suburb soon gives way to the dark underbelly of Latter-day Saints fundamentalism and violence, leading Pyre to question his own faith as he investigates the Lafferty family’s history.
Below, TheWrap breaks down everything you need to know about the series prior to your viewing, including where and when to watch.

How to watch Andrew Garfield’s FX show ‘Under the Banner of Heaven’ that’s not actually airing on FX
Andrew Garfield is having a banner year. The Brit received his second Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his performance as the late composer and playwright Jonathan Larson in the musical “Tick, Tick… Boom!”, and this was after reprising his role as Peter Parker (aka Peter 3) in Marvel’s wildly popular “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Now, he will grace the small screen to star in the FX limited series “Under the Banner of Heaven.”
Premiering Thursday, April 28, the true crime thriller hails from Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black and is inspired by the bestselling nonfiction book of the same by Jon Krakauer. The seven-episode series follows the events that led to the murders of Brenda Wright Lafferty (portrayed by “Normal People” star Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her infant daughter in the Salt Lake Valley area of Utah in 1984.

It’s only been about three weeks since the end of awards season, but, on Wednesday night, Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield was back on a red carpet in Hollywood for the premiere of his new series, “Under the Banner of Heaven.”
The FX project marks Garfield’s first miniseries, with the actor playing Detective Jeb Pyre, a Mormon man whose faith is shaken by an unthinkable crime. Based on the non-fiction book by Jon Krakauer, the show’s seven episodes follow the events that led to the 1984 murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her baby daughter in a Salt Lake Valley, Utah suburb. Over the course of the series, Pyre uncovers buried truths about the origins of his religion, the Fundamentialist sects that branched off from it and the potentially violent consequences of unyielding faith amid the real-life events which transpired within the Lafferty family.

Despite not being nominated for an Oscar, there sure was a lot of talk about Bruno at this year's ceremony. On Sunday, Becky G and Luis Fonsi joined the cast of "Encanto" - Adassa, Stephanie Beatriz, Mauro Castillo, Carolina Gaitan, and Diane Guerrero - on stage for the first-ever live performance of "We Don't Talk About Bruno," the breakout hit from the Disney animated musical. And it was magical, to say the least. Megan Thee Stallion surprised the audience when she joined in with her own brand-new verse for the song.
"I literally was just in Puerto Rico less than 24 hrs ago performing, my dress had just came in last night from India, and that was thee First Female Rap Performance at the Oscars ever !" Megan Thee Stallion tweeted after her performance. "Im definitely in grind mode."

Lin-Manuel Miranda has had a particularly busy year. The actor and songwriter is the brains behind Disney's "Encanto" soundtrack, and also made his directorial debut for the film "tick, tick...Boom!" an on-screen adaptation of the musical by the same name by Jonathan Larson. Miranda's latest works are currently nominated for several Oscars, including a best original song nomination for "Dos Oruguitas" from "Encanto."
"Dos Oruguitas" is the first song Miranda has written that's entirely in Spanish. On writing the song, he told The New York Times, "I needed to reach for a poetic language that is beyond my standard conversational Spanish. I'm pretty fluent in conversational Spanish, but this needed to be elevated." In addition, his film "tick, tick…Boom!" is present in two Oscar categories. Andrew Garfield is nominated for best actor for his role in the film and the movie grabbed another nomination for best film editing. Despite his many nominations,...

“Don’t Look Up” and “Coda” have won the top feature film awards from the Writers Guild of America, which held its annual WGA Awards on Sunday evening.
On the heels of its Producers Guild Award victory on Saturday, “Coda” kicked off the show by winning the first award of the night, for Best Adapted Screenplay. The category also included “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” “tick, tick…Boom!” and “West Side Story” — but two of the biggest challengers to “Coda” in the Oscar race for adapted screenplay, “The Power of the Dog” and “The Lost Daughter,” were not eligible for the award because of WGA regulations.

The wait for the Oscars is almost over, but one more major guild had yet to give out its trophies before the Academy Awards. Tonight, Hollywood’s top writers came together for the Writers Guild of America Awards, which honored the finest achievements in film and television writing.
On the film side, the nominees were actually quite different from what you’ll see at the Oscars next week. In the Original Screenplay category, “Licorice Pizza,” “Don’t Look Up,” and “King Richard” were still nominated, but “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” were replaced with “Being the Ricardos.” The Adapted Screenplay category was even more distinct, with only two Oscar contenders (“Dune” and “Coda”) nominated.

“Licorice Pizza,” written by Paul Thomas Anderson, and “Coda,” by Sian Heder, are favored to win Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, respectively. However, they are not facing off against many of their Oscar rivals as the WGA’s rules have rendered several scripts ineligible, including Oscar nominees “Belfast” and “The Worst Person in the World” in original, and “Drive My Car,” “The Lost Daughter” and “The Power of the Dog” in adapted. “Tick, Tick … Boom!” star Alexandra Shipp has joined the live-action “Barbie” film from Oscar-nominated director Greta Gerwig, starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
Though plot details are being kept under wraps, the film is written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and based on the popular Mattel toy. Shipp’s role is currently unknown, along with other co-stars America Ferrera and Kate McKinnon, along with Simu Liu and Ariana Greenblatt. Warner Bros. will distribute the film.
Shipp has also been cast in a minor role in Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ “65,” which stars two-time Oscar nominee Adam Driver. The new sci-fi thriller tells the story of an astronaut who crashes on a mysterious planet, only to discover he’s not alone.
This past year, Shipp starred in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut “Tick, Tick … Boom!,” the adaptation of the autobiographical Off-Broadway musical by the late Jonathan Larson.

Don’t look for three of our predicted 10 Oscar contenders for screenplay (the original script for “Belfast” plus the adaptations of “The Lost Daughter” and “The Power of the Dog”) in the 2022 Writers Guild of America Awards nominations announced January 27. When Daniel Kaluuya won the 2021 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Fred Hampton in “Judas and the Black Messiah,” he became the 77th performer to be honored for a portrayal of a real person. There has been at least one such case across the four acting categories in 19 of the last 20 years, with the 2017 quartet being the last to all win for playing fictional characters. This year, there are nine nominees with the potential to continue the trend, including two whose real-life counterparts are still living.
In Oscar history, it is most common for a win of this kind to come in the Best Actor category. Andrew Garfield continues to receive praise for his work on the big screen. On Wednesday night, the actor attended the 2022 Costume Designers Guild Awards in Los Angeles where he was honored with the Spotlight Award for his "Tick, Tick... Boom!" portrayal of Jonathan Larson.

As he took the podium for his acceptance speech, Garfield joked about being angered because Light made him cry. "I'm just so surprisingly overwhelmed and touched to be in this room with my community and so many collaborators that I love and I value," Garfield said, addressing the audience. "I feel like the luckiest, most fortunate actor alive.

"I'm just so surprisingly overwhelmed and touched to be in this room with my community and so many collaborators that I love and I value," Garfield said, addressing the audience. "I feel like the luckiest, most fortunate actor alive.

Last Updated March 7: Underdog “King Richard” beat the higher profile “Dune” and “The Power of the Dog” for drama film editing honors at the 72nd Ace Eddie Awards on March 5 at the Ace Hotel. Likewise, “Tick Tick Boom” upset the favored “Don’t Look Up” in the film comedy category. In terms of the Oscar race, though, it’s still wide open for “Dune,” “The Power of the Dog,” or “Don’t Look Up” to prevail.
Last Updated February 10: The editing Oscar nominees — “Don’t Look Up” (Netflix), “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “King Richard” (Warner Bros.), “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix), and “Tick Tick Boom” (Netflix) — all employ different rhythmic styles to convey their bizarre worlds and to get inside the heads of their troubled protagonists. For those wondering about editing as a Best Picture predictor, particularly since “Belfast” is not included here, they’ve only overlapped twice since 2012 with “Argo” and “Nomadland.

For years I’ve said that “The Dark Knight” is the one great comic-book movie. The films you might consider to be runners-up — “Spider-Man 2,” “Superman II,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” — are splendid entertainments, but none of them earn the G-word. Not really. “The Dark Knight,” though, had an operatic grandeur fused with a creeping noir dread merged with a conspiratorial intricacy that added up to a true vision of the world. It also had a snazziness — that big-wheel Batpod! — that just about popped off the screen. At the time, the film wasn’t just “dark” but resonantly dark. It seemed about as elaborate and exciting as a comic-book movie could be.
