There’s another Amityville movie to watch! And this one actually has some connection to the early days of the franchise. These days it seems like every indie filmmaker in the world has made something with Amityville in the title, but the new film The Amityville Curse is based on the novel of the same title, which was written by Hans Holzer. Holzer was a parapsychologist who invested the supposedly haunted house in Amityville in the ’70s and went on to write the books Murder in Amityville (which served as a source of inspiration for Amityville II: The Possession), The Secret of Amityville, and yes, The Amityville Curse. The new adaptation of Holzer’s work has been released through the Tubi streaming service as a Tubi Original – and you can check out the trailer for it in the embed above.
This is actually the second movie to be called The Amityville Curse.

The Amityville Curse seemed to bear a couple of its own curses. It’s an Amityville knockoff and after Amityville Cult, Amityville Thanksgiving, Amityville in the Hood, and so many more, it’s pretty much a guarantee of mediocrity. Secondly, it’s a Tubi Original, which usually carries a very similar guarantee.
But there were a couple of reasons to be hopeful as well. Director Éric Tessier may not be well known outside of Quebec but his adaptions of two of Patrick Senécal’s novels, 5150 Elm’s Way and more importantly, Sur le Seuil aka Evil Words, are both excellent. Dennis Heaton wrote the film, based on the novel by the late Hans Holzer. Heaton you may recall wrote the Billy Connolly zom-com Fido.

“Culling the herd” is something I’ve heard many times, but never gave it much thought until having watched Pat Mills’ latest film, The Retreat. It is used as a reference to animals, but separating or killing “inferior” human beings to reduce their numbers or to rid a group of their “undesirable” traits has been happening for centuries. It’s still happening to minorities around the world. Alyson Richards’ screenplay uses deer as a metaphor for the queer community. As one character recalls her experiences of hunting as a child to “cull the problem deer,” the other character asks, “Were they a problem? The deer?” The response: “Depends on who you ask.” It’s a simple but poignant phrase that reminds the audience that, in this case, homophobia is still ever-present. And while it may often feel safer in big cities surrounded by a larger number of people like you,...

The broad strokes are familiar: a couple dealing with emotional strife goes away for a weekend, lands at a rustic/terrifying cabin, and finds themselves at the mercy of murderous freaks. The basic plot of Pat Mills’ “The Retreat” is so basic that it helped frame the tongue-in-cheek “Cabin in the Woods,” which itself unpacked and poked fun at all manner of horror tropes. Mills’ film, which screenwriter Alyson Richards loosely based on her own cabin-in-the-woods experience, attempts to subvert that setup by centering it around a lesbian couple.
Seeing a pair of women (Tommie-Amber Pirie and Sarah Allen) occupy roles usually owned by straight couples, and bolstered by a plot that hinges on their sexuality, is its own kind of subversion. However, the real twist of “The Retreat” goes beyond that. What if, “The Retreat” wonders, they weren’t just a lesbian couple but a pair of women hellbent...

"Every decision you make today affects the next seven generations." Level Film is releasing this new sci-fi thriller film titled Parallel Minds, an indie creation about Artificial Intelligence and a future where we record our memories to transfer to the next generation. When the programmer of a self-aware A.I. computer systems ends up dead, her colleague and a police detective investigate and try to find out what's going on. This is another of these high concept, modern sci-fi films that tries to play with ideas like A.I. and memory and computers and what is possible in the future, and how it can get out of hand. (As it always does...) But they're getting so much cheesier every time they make another. Parallel Minds stars Greg Bryk, Tommie-Amber Pirie, Madison Walsh, and Wilma Pelly. Apparently this was already released in September, but didn't make a dent. We didn't even...

Despite its amusingly obscene, on-the-nose title, How to Plan an Orgy in a Small Town isn’t quite as smutty and salacious as you might think. The third full-length feature from writer-director Jeremy Lalonde (The Untitled Work of Paul Shepherd, Sex After Kids), it simultaneously revolves around a carnally canny columnist (Jewel Staite) trying to yank a group of tightly wound, sexually repressed yokels out of their shells and feels exactly like the kind of movie one of those fussy, fretful townspeople might make in the pursuit of trying – against every chaste impulse in their body – to be edgy.
That is to say, though How to Plan an Orgy in a Small Town isn’t the raucous and hard-r-rated sex comedy some might expect, it is obsessive about all articles and activities anatomical, from the aforementioned group-sex event to more scatological gags, most verbal as opposed to visual. It’s...

The first season of Bitten performed very well in Canada (where it's produced) and even became Space's highest-rated original series to date. The show performed okay here in the States on Syfy. How will season two do? Will this supernatural series be cancelled or renewed for a third season? If it's a hit in Canada but not in the U.S., will Syfy air future seasons? Stay tuned.

Filmmaker Matt Sadowski and his leading man Dov Tiefenbach took on the conventional romantic comedy and all its artifice and won with the independent Canadian feature Pretend We’re Kissing. Set proudly in Toronto, Tiefenbach brilliantly takes on the role of a reserved and socially phobic man who hopes to finally make a match with a girl (Tommie-Amber Pirie) who seems open to him. She’s patient and encouraging, but there are many obstacles in their way including an alt-babe roommate played by Zoe Kravitz. So they take it outdoors and into Toronto and onto the island where they are stranded overnight […]...

The film talks about a seventeen-year-old teenager (Jay Baruchel) from a rich family of Montreal. This guy believes that he's the reincarnation of Leon Trotsky, one of the Soviet Union founding fathers (1917). Besides, at his school, this teenager will try to unionized students.

The first time I saw The Trotsky was during the previous Festival du nouveau cinema in Montreal. Many months later, my perception about this teenager comedy has hardly changed. In fact, The Trotsky is a little bit silly, yet positively irreverent, but it remains a decent film meant for entertainment.
Leon Bronstein (Jay Baruchel), a teenager from Montreal, believes he's the reincarnation of Leon Trotsky, one of the Ussr's founding fathers, and motivated the workers of his dad's factory into a hunger strike. After that, Leon's dad (Saul Rubinek) takes him out of his boarding school and sends him in a public school. By that way, according to his dad, Leon can have the feeling that he is living the life of the real Leon Trotsky. Once there, Leon will try to give to students from his school a real union.

Although the Festival du nouveau cinéma commenced two days ago, this is the first movie from this festival that I review. To be honest with you, I wasn't necessarily attracted by this film since I'm not a fan of teenager comedies. However, despite a few weak spots here and there, you won't regret buying tickets for The Trotsky if you're in for a funny comedy.
Leon Blonstein (Jay Baruchel) is a son of a rich factory owner (Saul Rubinek). Moreover, Leon firmly believes that he's the reincarnation of Leon Trotsky, one of the founding fathers of the Soviet Union. Toronto -- The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. is ready to pick up locally produced single-camera comedy "18 to Life," even with pilot partner ABC out of the picture.
The Montreal-set sitcom, from indie producer Galafilm, portrays 18-year-old neighbors, played by Stacey Farber and Michael Seater, who get married on a dare only to face criticism from their parents and friends.
Last summer, ABC brokered a deal with Alchemy Television for U.S. rights to "18 to Life," marking the first time a Canadian and a U.S. network partnered on a Canadian primetime comedy. But while the U.S. network screened the Canadian pilot, it said Tuesday that it is no longer involved with the project.
Rounding out the sitcom's cast are Peter Keleghan, Al Goulem, Ellen David and newcomers Tommie-Amber Pirie and Ariel Shiri.
Derek Schreyer and Karen Troubetzkoy created and executive produced the sitcom, with Ian Whitehead producing and Peter Wellington directing the pilot.
