Lionsgate has unveiled plans for a new Hunger Games movie, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, based on franchise writer Suzanne Collins’ just-announced new novel.
The screen adaptation, unveiled on Thursday by Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, has Francis Lawrence in talks to direct the adaptation for Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson’s Color Force banner. Lawrence, screenwriter Michael Arndt and producer Jacobson earlier teamed with Lionsgate on four film adaptations of earlier Collins books — The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay — that took in $3.3 billion in box office.
Collins and her publisher Scholastic announced the fifth book in the series Thursday. Scholastic will publish Sunrise on the Reaping simultaneously in print, digital and audio formats in North America and other English-speaking territories on March 18, 2025.
There’s no word yet on casting for the film, but Lionsgate has set a wide theatrical release on Nov.

It stands to reason that with announcement of another Hunger Games novel by Suzanne Collins, due out on March 18, 2025, Lionsgate would greenlight another movie. The big screen take of the next prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, will hit screens on Nov. 20, 2026 and the franchise filmmaker of the last four movies, Francis Lawrence, is in talks to return to direct.
In addition Hunger Games producer Nina Jacobson, alongside her producing partner Brad Simpson, is returning to produce the next prequel under their Color Force banner. It reps Color Force’s sixth outing since bringing the series to Lionsgate in 2012.
While the previous prequel, The Hungers: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, was set 64 years before the events of the original trilogy, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set 24 years before that trio of Jennifer Lawrence films in the world of Panem, commencing on the morning of the...

Keke Palmer has joined the cast of “Good Fortune,” a comedy from Aziz Ansari.
She’ll star alongside Ansari, who wrote and directed the film in his debut feature, as well as Seth Rogen and Keanu Reeves.
Palmer’s role, as well as the entire plot of the movie, is being kept under wraps. Lionsgate is backing “Good Fortune,” which is currently in production in Los Angeles.
“Keke is a delight to work with,” Ansari said in a statement. “I’m so happy she’s a part of our cast and even more excited to provide a quote for this press release announcing her casting.”
“Good Fortune” is Ansari’s second attempt to make his directorial debut. The star of “Parks and Recreation” and creator of Netflix’s “Master of None” was previously working on the comedic drama “Being Mortal” for Searchlight. But production was infinitely suspended in 2022 over complaints...

Two-time Emmy winner Keke Palmer is boarding Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut, Good Fortune at Lionsgate, which also stars the Parks & Recreation alum, Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen.
Palmer was originally set to star in Ansari’s previous directorial debut at Searchlight, Being Mortal, before that movie was shut down by the studio over alleged inappropriate conduct by star Bill Murray. Palmer, in the wake of that experience, had nothing but praise for Ansari when Deadline spoke to her at the Nope premiere in summer 2022.
“I had a wonderful time filming,” Palmer told us at Nope. “Aziz Ansari is one of the coolest people that I ever met. That was the coolest experience, but I don’t know anything more than that.”
Her role in Good Fortune is under wraps. Ansari writes, directs, and stars in the comedy; which is produced by Anthony Katagas, Alan Yang and Ansari, and...

Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company have won a competitive bidding war for an adaptation of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.” The film, to be based on Barbara Robinson’s popular book, will be penned and directed by Dallas Jenkins, the creator, director and producer of “The Chosen.”
“The Best Christmas Pageant,” which has sold over seven million copies since its publication in 1972, centers on the Herdmans – apparently the very worst kids in the history of the world. However, they end up taking over their town’s local Christmas pageant. Possible spoilers – it just might accidentally teach the community the true meaning of Christmas.
Kingdom Story’s Kevin Downes, Daryl Lefever, Andrew Erwin and Jon Erwin will produce alongside McDaniel and Thomas. Jenkins will executive produce alongside Molen, Mark Kendell, and Tony Young. Production begins next month in Canada. The film will debut theatrically over the 2024 holiday season.

Aziz Ansari’s “Good Fortune” has been hit with some bad luck.
The Lionsgate film, which is set to star Seth Rogen and Keanu Reeves, has halted production due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.
A representative of the film shared with IndieWire that principal photography on “Good Fortune” intends to resume at a later date. The “Good Fortune” script was completed prior to the WGA strike, which has led to the shelving of “Stranger Things,” “The Penguin,” “The Last of Us,” and more high-profile productions.
“Good Fortune” is being billed as Ansari’s feature directorial debut after his “Being Mortal” production fell in limbo as of April 2022 amid actor Bill Murray’s sexual misconduct allegations on the set of the Searchlight Pictures film. Murray has claimed the investigation stemmed from a miscommunication. Seth Rogen is also attached to star in “Being Mortal,” in addition to “Good Fortune.
