Creed star Michael B. Jordan steps behind the camera for this second sequel to Ryan Coogler’s 2015 boxing smash hit. This time around, the Rocky spin-off (of sorts) has decided it doesn’t need Rocky anymore, but it compensates with an exciting role for Jonathan Majors, who Was on the fast track to superstardom thanks to his role as Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Things have changed, however, since Creed 3′s original debut…

In its initial opening weekend, "Creed III" genuinely knocked out box office expectations (and records), its competition, and prior "Rocky" first weekends all in one punch. This third franchise entry sees Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) confronted by his past in the form of childhood-friend-turned-enemy Damian "Dame" Anderson (Jonathan Majors). Following an early situation that left Dame locked up while Adonis got away, Dame reemerges after almost two decades' incarceration with dreams of restoring his once-promising early boxing career. It's yet another memorable performance from the electric Majors in bringing Dame to life, alongside Michael B. Jordan expanding the "Creed" universe as both filmmaker and star.
While "Creed III" certainly boasts great performances and stunningly executed fights, one of its greatest elements is the film's attention to detail, showcasing the filmmakers' love for and knowledge of the sport of boxing. Woven into Dame's arc, character, style, and fighting habits are...

The underdog story is a classic cinematic trope for a reason. We follow our heroes from humble beginnings with few believing in them, but through grit and determination, they become self-made champions. It's the American dream personified on the big screen. Few franchises have offered consistent stand-up-and-cheer moments more than "Rocky." The Italian Stallion hadn't seen the ring since 2006's "Rocky Balboa." Then, director Ryan Coogler, star Michael B. Jordan, and Stallone found a way to breathe new life into the franchise. In a world of spinoffs, reboots, and retreads, it's rare to get one that works as well as the first "Creed." The film comes out swinging with the franchise's most realistic fights, a dynamic relationship between Adonis and Rocky, and several moments that make grown men ugly cry (or at least this grown man).
Each movie has defined the central conflict...

This post contains spoilers for "Creed III."
"Rocky" is a mythic saga, but its characters are ultimately human. The first film is the everyman story to end all others: a nobody boxer Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) taking on world-famous champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). The sequels increasingly moved away from the working-class hero trappings of the first, but Apollo's death in "Rocky IV" brought characters who seemed like titans back to mortality.
The reason the first "Creed" radiated ingenuity, despite being the seventh installment in a franchise, is because it went back to the real world. With Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), the movie had an underdog protagonist again. The film also looked down-to-earth; Adonis ran through the streets of Philadelphia so off the beaten path that they felt right out of the Bruce Springsteen song.
"Creed III" largely ditches the first film's setting for the richest neighborhoods of Los Angeles.

Boxing champ Adonis is living the good life with a wonderful wife, loving daughter, and more than he could have ever dreamed of. So, of course, he’s now about to face his greatest challenge – a friend he left behind – in the third entry of the Rocky spinoff, Creed III.
Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) has retired from boxing and spends his days with his wife, Bianca (Tessa Thompson), and his daughter, Amara (Mila Davis-Kent), in their mansion. He also runs a gym and is a promoter for boxing champ Felix Chavez (Jose Benavidez). Yes… life’s pretty much perfect for Creed.
That is until a blast from his boyhood past, Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors), shows up. It seems Damian and Creed grew up together and were...

We’re back for a third round of Adonis Creed’s life with Creed III. Making his directorial debut, Michael B. Jordan executes his vision for the future of these films in the franchise, which is something to appreciate as each of the movies has a different director who frames each Creed with their own style. In this new installment, Adonis faces a new challenge: the past. Alongside Jordan, the movie stars Tessa Thompson, Jonathan Majors, Wood Harris and Phylicia Rashad, and written by Keenan Coogler and Zach Baylin

Halfway through his first professional fight — a title fight, no less — “Diamond” Dame Anderson (Jonathan Majors) uses a break between rounds to get rid of a tooth that his fierce competitor, Felix Chavez (Jose Benavidez), has knocked loose during their bruising battle. If that sounds painful, it looks even worse, but the former Golden Gloves champ simply spits it out, gets back in the ring, and wins big. He will not be deterred. Nothing will stop him. What could be scarier in a competitor than that?
In Michael B. Jordan’s “Creed III,” the franchise star adds “director” to his resume with And while the basic idea that fuels the central battle of the film is thrilling enough — who would want to go up against Jonathan Majors, let alone a Jonathan Majors driven by righteous anger? — an overcooked script from Keenan Coogler and Zach Baylin, full of other diversions and potential disasters,...

There has never been a bad “Rocky” movie before, and thank goodness “Creed III” keeps the streak alive.
Even the films in the “Rocky” series with less-than-stellar reputations are interesting character pieces, valuable snapshots of their moments in history, which only become more enjoyable as time marches on. Time has marched directly into the “Creed” series, an equally impressive collection of underdog tales starring Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky’s greatest opponent, who forges a path for himself but — like Rocky before him — keeps walking into one epic tussle after another.
The raison d’être of the “Rocky” and “Creed” sequels is to take a character who had seemingly achieved all of their goals, knock them back down again, and see if they can crawl back up. Frankly, the series is more valuable for all these efforts. Taken as a whole, these films paint life as a perpetual,...

Adonis Creed, like Rocky Balboa before him, is a fighter who faces down his demons and finds his triumph-of-the-human-spirit mojo, all leading up to his inevitable delivery of that knockout punch. The first two “Creed” films, like the six “Rocky” films, were rah-rah crowd-pleasers, with the hero taking on an adversary who represents the forces of darkness. The boxing foes in these movies are a little like comic-book supervillains: Clubber Lang, Ivan Drago, Drago’s vengeful son, and so on. They’ve been catchy and, at times, memorable characters, but it’s part of their appeal that they’re two-dimensional raging-bull enemies you would hardly rank as layered human beings.
But “Creed III,” directed with impressive first-time flair by its star, Michael B. Jordan, is infused with a different flavor. Adonis, having settled into retirement in his sleek L.A. mansion, appears to be sitting on top of the world.
