Breathe takes place in the year 2039 when plant life has become extinct and, as a result, Earth’s oxygen levels are too low to sustain life on the surface. One family, Darius, Maya and their daughter Zora survive in an underground bunker making brief trips to the surface with an oxygen suit Darius created.
As the film opens, Darius’ father dies in an accident on the surface. Darius decides to risk the journey to bury him next to his mother. Months later, he hasn’t returned, then Tess and Lucas turn up claiming to know what happened to him.
Writer Doug Simon and director Stefon Bristol are short on details about how Breathe’s world came to be. We’re simply told that Darius was an engineer and a prepper,...

Filmmaker Stefon Bristol’s 2019 debut See You Yesterday (Netflix) demonstrated the filmmaker’s deft ability to blend tones and legibly render a complex time-travel story injected with social consciousness and the Black experience. Bristol and co-screenwriter Felicia Bailey deservedly took home the Film Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay in 2020. Now with his sophomore feature Breathe (distributed by Warner Brothers), the NY-based Spike Lee protege continues his ambitious project of telling Black-cenetered sci-fi stories on an indie film budget.
Beginning with a Black List-approved original screenplay by Doug Simon, Bristol was encouraged by producers to put his own stamp on the material, resulting in the change of setting from post-apocalyptic upstate New York to post-apocalyptic Flatbush. Bristol’s updated vision also attracted the film’s stellar cast, which includes Jennifer Hudson, Milla Jovovich, Qvenzhané Wallis, Sam Worthington, Common and more.

The 15th annual Black List survey was revealed Monday December 16, and it includes 66 un-produced screenplays from up-and-coming literary talent. Results were pooled from a survey of more than 250 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to 10 favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2019 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year. This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the Black List.
Since 2005, more than a third of the screenplays included in the annual Black List surveys have become produced films, and often to notoriety — such as “Argo,” “American Hustle,” “Juno,” “The King’s Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Spotlight,” “The Revenants,” “The Descendants,” and “Hell or High Water.” Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 film “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, was featured on the 2018 Black List.

Maria Bello and Frank Grillo star in this first trailer for Demonic. Produced by James Wan (The Conjuring) and directed by Will Canon (Brotherhood), the clip shows several ghost hunters and a haunted home. They are attacked and some do not escape this cursed home. Full of terror, the first trailer for the film is hosted here. As well, Demonic also stars Cody Horn, Dustin Milligan and Megan Risk. This horror title will be released later in 2015. The film's story begins after a mysterious set of murders. The sole survivor acts suspiciously as detectives try to find out what happened to the victims. The trail to the truth is littered with more bodies and few will exit this haunted home. The film uses multiple shooting styles. Partly shot via found footage, the director also utilized conventional shooting styles. Fans of film can preview Demonic below. Release Date: 2015. Director: Will Canon.

There was supposed to be a James Wan produced horror film called Demonic hitting theaters last year, but The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films pulled the release meant for late 2014 for some reason. There's no indication of when exactly the film might arrive now, but the first trailer for the haunted house horror flick starring Frank Grillo and Maria Bello has arrived. Honestly, even though this film was shelved, it doesn't look half bad. And by the way, that house looks eerily similar to the house used as the main setting in The Conjuring, which Wan directed. Coincidence? Or maybe just similar houses? Watch! Here's the first trailer for Will Canon's Demonic from FilmIsto Trailers (via Collider): Demonic is directed by Will Canon from a script he wrote with Doug Simon and Max La Bella. A police officer (Frank Grillo) and a psychologist (Maria Bello) investigate the deaths...

After handling visual effects for such blockbusters as Watchmen, Avatar and Terminator: Salvation, Dan Blank is aiming to showcase his directing chops in Invisible, a sci-fi feature that he just successfully pitched to Fox.
The story is still under wraps, but Invisible has been described as “following in the vein of superhero sci-fi thriller Chronicle.” Given that Chronicle was an exciting breath of fresh air for both the superhero and found-footage genres, it’s not hard to start getting excited for Invisible.
One aspect of this project that’s especially promising is the fact that Doug Simon, the writer behind SXSW Audience Award winner Brotherhood and a 2013 Black List script called Burn Site, is attached to pen the screenplay, from Blank’s idea.
If Blank is signed to direct, as seems likely, it won’t be his first time getting behind the camera for an idea he created. In 2012, he directed Monster Roll,...

With all the mindless sequels and reboots that Hollywood has churned out over the last few years, it’s always nice when something original and well-written can break through and get a studio release. Unfortunately, many quality scripts can spend years without ever reaching the right executive to give it the green light. In an effort to make the process a little bit better, former production executive Franklin Leonard started The Black List in 2004. Today, the site announced its ninth annual list of the best unproduced scripts.
To come up with the list, nominations are received from over 250 executives. If a film gets 6 nominations, it gets a spot on the list. The more executives that nominate it, the higher on the list it is. Production for last year’s top film, Draft Day, is underway with the theatrical release scheduled for April, so there’s a pretty good chance that...

The Black List, the online community which grew out of an annual industry survey about favorite unproduced screenplays, released its 2013 list on Twitter today. Three of the last five Academy Awards for Best Picture went to scripts previously featured on The Black List ("Slumdog Millionaire," "The King's Speech" "Argo) and seven of the last 12 screenwriting Oscars were featured on previous Black Lists ("Juno," "Slumdog Millionaire," "The King's Speech," "The Social Network," "The Descendants," "Django Unchained," "Argo.") Over 225 Black List scripts have been produced into films grossing over $19 billion in worldwide box office and Black List scripts have won 35 Academy Awards from more than 175 nominations, the company reports. Hey, wait a second. Didn't James Wan say that he was done making horror films and Insidious: Chapter 2 was going to be his last? Well, that still appears to be the plan. But we'll be seeing his name attached to at least one more horror flick headed our way next year.
There's been a project listed on Wan's IMDb page for a while now that bears the title (or lack thereof) "Untitled James Wan Thriller," aka House of Horror, and the website Desde Hollywood broke the news today that the movie has finally been given a proper name. Currently in post-production, the film will be called Demonic, and you can expect to find the words "James Wan Presents" attached to that title.
Written by Will Canon, Doug Simon, and Max La Bella and directed by Canon, Demonic was produced by Wan and is based on a story he wrote.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Phase 4 Films.
Director: Will Canon.
Writers: Will Canon and Douglas Simon.
Brotherhood is director Will Canon's first film and this feature is based on his earlier short film, "Roslyn." Due to release on DVD May 17th, Brotherhood is a continuously tense time, spent with one young man's pledge to a local fraternity. The night does not go as planned and instead of putting shrinkwrap under toilet seats, there are simulated convenience store hold-ups. Soon, central character and new pledge Adam (Trevor Morgan) is standing up to fraternity leader Frank (Jon Foster), in what turns out to be a test of right and wrong. Unbelievably panned by critics, this indie thriller is an exciting time spent in a dramatization of fraternity life.
Adam, Kevin and a couple of other young men are taken out into the dark night around the City of Hamilton.

It ain't 'Old School.' Rather than celebrate the oft-demeaning, sometimes out-of-control pledge rituals of college fraternities, indie thriller 'Brotherhood' begins with screaming, shouting and sheer panic. We're shoved blindfolded into a van along with three young pledges, who are facing the dark side of an insanely intense initiation. One by one, the pledges are given a gun and told to rob a convenience store. Very quickly, the prank goes horribly wrong, and the frat brothers careen from one crisis to the next, testing the limits of brotherly bonding as they desperately try to dodge the authorities.
'Brotherhood' won Audience Awards at SXSW and the Dallas International Film Festival last year and will be available via Video On Demand systems nationwide starting on Friday. It opens theatrically in Dallas on Friday (it was filmed nearby in Arlington) and in Los Angeles next week.

From National Lampoon’s Animal House to Sorority Row fraternity and sorority houses have been the setting for countless movies. These American University organisations have inspired many filmmakers to explore the world of initiation rituals, house rivalries, secret societies and general debauchery that exists within the walls of the Greek letter organisations.
The latest film to join the ranks is the debut feature from Will Canon, Brotherhood, released on DVD today. Written by Canon and Doug Simon, the film is an adaption of Canon’s own short film ‘Roslyn’ following the events of a disastrous night of fraternity pranks gone wrong.
Adam Buckley, played by Trevor Morgan (probably best known as the kid from ‘Jurassic Park III’), is a young student looking to join the Sigma Zeta Chi college fraternity. Before he can be accepted, Adam and the other pledges must each undergo an initiation which involves them, in turn,...

Why do college fraternities give themselves fancy Greek names? In Animal House (1978), John Belushi’s Bluto was part of the confederacy of toga-wearing dunces known as "Delta Tau Chi". Similarly, in Will Canon’s feature debut Brotherhood (2010), the trail of stolen toilet seats and botched robberies leads straight to the door of "Sigma Zeta Chi". If you ask me, that big sign outside the frat house should just read “Moron Idiot Cretin” – it would save everyone a lot of time.

During the last night of an La fraternity pledge recruitment, a prank at a convenience store goes horribly wrong and one of the young men ends up with a bullet in the shoulder. Incident after incident happen as dodgy frat leader Frank (Jon Foster) tries to control the situation and save himself from jail (mostly by saying ‘fuck!’) while moralistic newbie Adam (Trevor Morgan) attempts to do the right thing to save his friend’s life.
That’s the premise of Brotherhood, and it’s a somewhat interesting one – certainly a fresher take on the ‘college frat boy’ genre than Van Wilder. The first trailer for "Brotherhood" has been made available for viewing pleasure via Yahoo! Movies. Opened with fun party scenes, it continues with tense footage as Sigma Zeta Chi fraternity is about to welcome new members and challenges them to rob a convenience store as the final step of their initiation.
College freshman Adam Buckley finds himself dealing with the fact that a fellow-pledge just got shot while doing it. Frank, the senior fraternity brother in charge of the night's events, is able to get the injured pledge out of the store alive, but the fraternity's troubles are just beginning.
Thinking they can get out of the situation without taking the pledge to a hospital, Frank decides the group will handle things themselves. But when every move is met with disaster, Adam must find it within himself to go against Frank and his new brothers in order to save his friend's life.

I feel like I've seen half a dozen movies this week just from the amount trailers we've had. The latest is for the indie drama Brotherhood, which is directed by Will Canon, written by both Canon and Doug Simon, and starring Trevor Morgan and Jon Foster.
Here's the synopsis from IMDb:
Adam Buckley finds himself in the middle of a convenience store robbery during his last night as a pledge for a college fraternity. When the initiation ritual goes horribly wrong, and every move proves disastrous, Adam is forced to confront a new challenge all together, and he has to take a stand.

To many, fraternities are a big part of the college experience, as they help someone branch out and meet people and find brothers for life. They can really open up someone’s world, and help them discover themselves. Or as the film Brotherhood suggests, get you in a shitload of trouble that could easily put you in prison for a long time.
