"This is a story about five fighters." The story follows a young boy whose life is changed forever when he kills two corrupt policemen in a South African shanty town. Decades later, he finally heads home but his return brings out his enemies who go after him and all of his friends. The film stars Vuyo Dabula as our hero Tau, along with Hamilton Dhlamini, Zethu Dlomo, Kenneth Nkosi, Mduduzi Mabaso, Aubrey Poolo, Lizwi Vilakazi, Warren Masemola, Anthony Oseyemi, Jerry Mofokeng, plus Kenneth Fok. Five Fingers for Marseilles tells the story of a group of young men who stand up to brutal police oppression in Marseilles, a town in the rugged badlands of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The film made its world premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and went on to screen at Fantastic Fest, BFI London Film Festival, and the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Since then, it has been receiving rave reviews. While South Africans will be first to see Five Fingers for Marseilles, the fast-paced action film will also be released in the United States on 7 September, starting in New York and Los Angeles. The cast includes Vuyo Dabula, Hamilton Dhlamini, Zethu Dlomo, Kenneth Nkosi, Mduduzi Mabaso, Aubrey Poolo, Lizwi Vilakazi, Warren Masemola,...

"Marseilles was never free, but it will be. Change is coming." EntertainmentOne has unveiled a new full-length official trailer for the action western film Five Fingers for Marseilles, which first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. We posted the teaser trailer for this "neo-western" set in South Africa just before the festival last year, now we have a full theatrical trailer. The story follows a young boy whose life is changed forever when he kills two corrupt policemen in a South African shanty town. Decades later, he finally heads home but his return brings out his enemies who go after him and all of his friends. The film stars Vuyo Dabula as Tau, along with Hamilton Dhlamini, Zethu Dlomo, Kenneth Nkosi, Mduduzi Mabaso, Aubrey Poolo, Lizwi Vilakazi, Warren Masemola, Anthony Oseyemi, Jerry Mofokeng, plus Kenneth Fok. This looks very cool, very gritty. I'm quite curious to check it out,...

Director Michael Matthews and writer Sean Drummond were drawn to the landscapes of South Africa’s Eastern Cape while traveling their homeland, especially the echoes of classic cinematic western environments. Learning about how its current towns arose — from the ashes of Apartheid-era cities mimicking European capitals by name — only cemented the comparison, each a product of the locals taking control once their oppressors left after their government changed hands and the train lines shutdown. This new frontier became the pair’s setting, their story gelling after seven years of research and development to do right by the inhabitants’ history and struggles. Sprinkle in a bit of legend and lore to create an antihero hidden beneath rage and Five Fingers for Marseilles was born.
The title describes a quintet of childhood friends caught within Apartheid’s grip. Too young to feel the effects as greatly as their defeated parents, they’re...

"You've been sent to judge me." This looks like it could be a big breakout at the Toronto Film Festival this year. A teaser trailer has debuted for the film Five Fingers for Marseilles, a "neo-western" set in South Africa. The story follows a young boy whose life is changed forever when he kills two corrupt policemen in a South African shanty town. Two decades later, he finally heads home but his return brings out his enemies who go after him and all of his friends. Starring Vuyo Dabula, Hamilton Dhlamini, Zethu Dlomo, Kenneth Nkosi, Mduduzi Mabaso, Aubrey Poolo, Lizwi Vilakazi, Warren Masemola, Anthony Oseyemi, Brendon Daniels, and Jerry Mofokeng. The two filmmakers spent 7 years researching and developing this, "including 5,000 miles of cross-country travel, development, and filming amidst the erratic winter weather of the Eastern Cape." From the looks of it, this film might just be as awesome as it sounds.

It's finally here! The USA theatrical run begins Tonight for award-winning filmmaker Sara Blecher's "City of God meets Blue Crush" South African coming-of-age drama Otelo Burning - a gripping story of township kids as they discover surfing, set in late 1980s, against the backdrop of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. It stars some familiar South African actors whose names have been mentioned once or twice on this site, attached to previous films, like Kenneth Nkosi, who also starred in Paradise Stop and White Wedding (South Africa's entry in the 2009 Oscars in the foreign film category). Kenneth Nkosi (Tsotsi, White Wedding) stars in the newest Leon Schuster comedy film, Mad Buddies, which opened in South Africa last month. Here's the synopsis for Mad Buddies: Sworn enemies, Boetie (Schuster) and Beast (Nkosi), are forced to embark on a road trip as unwitting subjects of a new TV reality show. On camera, with the whole of South Africa in on the joke, the pair comes unstuck at every stage of the journey until they discover that they have been conned and join forces to exact revenge. It's only been in Sa theaters for about two weeks and, from what I gather from numerous on-line reviews, the general reaction to this over-the-top comedy is decidedly...

Sublime in its rich ocean scenery, where you will indulge in for most of the film, the majestically photographed Otelo Burning is actually set in the South African province of Lamontville in the late 1980’s, around the time when Nelson Mandela was released from prison. But the refreshingly unconventional and gripping film isn’t a political narrative; that serves as more of a backdrop. Written by Sara Blecher, James Whyle and The Cast Workshop, and directed by Blecher (Surfing Soweto), Otelo Burning is a coming of age story - based on real life events - about three boys: Otelo Buthelezi (Jafta Mamabolo), his best friend named New Year (Kenneth Nkosi- Paradise Stop,...

From the team that brought us the dramedy, White Wedding, South Africa’s 2010 Best Foreign Film Oscar entry, which I still have yet to see (but will later today)… director Jann Turner, and stars Kenneth Nkosi and Rapulana Seiphemo.
This next film, described as an action/comedy, is titled Paradise Stop.
Its synopsis reads: “… a clean cop on a backwater beat discovers that the man behind a series of freeway heists is also his only friend in town, the owner of the Paradise Truck Stop.”
It premiered in South Africa on March 9th, with an official theatrical debut scheduled for March 25, 2011. No word on whether it’ll travel west though. However, since White Wedding had a run in the USA and is now available on home video/VOD, Paradise Stop might as well.

The Plot: An elite hit man teaches his trade to an apprentice who has a connection to one of his previous victims.
The Buzz: Jason Statham is kind of cookie cutter, and this looks to be just another of his many action extravaganzas, but he does turn in some good work from time to time. The gritty South African-set thriller "Gangster's Paradise: Jerusalema" is now available from Anchor Bay Entertainment, written/directed by Ralph Ziman, starring Rapaulana Seiphemo, Robert Hobbs, Kenneth Nkosi, Eugene Khumbanyiwa and Louise Saint-Claire:

This is a gentle comedy as much about friendship as it is about romantic relationships. “White Wedding” follows Elvis (writer-producer Kenneth Nkosi) and Ayanda (Zandile Mstuwana) as they stumble toward the altar. The weekend gets off to a rough start when Elvis flies into Johannesburg and misses his connecting bus. He’s late for his own bachelor party, from which his best friend Tumi (writer-producer Rapulana Seiphemo) is too hung over to pick him up. Their journey — and their friendship — only gets rockier from there, involving vandalized vehicles, missed turns and vague directions, an obstinate grandmother and a stinky goat, a broken axle, and an Afrikaner bar where the two black guys and the white girl they picked up along the way are most unwelcome.
Meanwhile, in Cape Town, Ayanda and her pink-shirted wedding planner are struggling to put the final touches on the titular nuptials, a modern ceremony that offends her mother.

I learned several things about South Africa in "White Wedding," an entertaining but forgettable comedy about two men and one woman roadtripping from Johannesburg to Cape Town, but the most interesting fact I discovered was that their films are just as susceptible to cliches as their American counterparts. The accents may change, but the stereotypes of roadtrip and wedding movies remain exactly the same: the traditional parents who clash with their forward-thinking children, the crotchety old relative with weird superstitions, the effeminate wedding planner, the bride who has to choose between love and security, the woman who misinterprets a man's bad luck as a fear of commitment. Since "White Wedding"'s ultimate lesson is one of universality, this choice is weirdly appropriate. We all want love. We all fear commitment. We all like reassuringly familiar narratives that juxtapose literal journeys of low-stakes danger with metaphorical journeys of personal discovery.

White Wedding was South Africa’s official Academy Awards submission for 2009’s Best Foreign Language Film, which betrays a fatal lack of confidence on South Africa’s part. Positing a forgettable bit of romantic-comedy fluff like White Wedding as the country’s best of the best is a little like the United States entering Leap Year or Confessions Of A Shopaholic as its Best Foreign Film submission to South Africa’s answer to the Oscars. Beefy Kenneth Nkosi stars as an affable but easily agitated young man in danger of going Awol from his own wedding after missing a ...

It’s in part from obstacles and issues we’ve confronted through our triangular, multi-cultural and multi-racial friendship that “White Wedding” comes.

Kenneth Nkosi and Rapulana Seiphemo were acting on the series, I was one of the directors, and it was while we were toiling together in the soap mine that we became friends. Ours is a relationship of deep trust and loyalty, one of the most important in my life. More than a decade after that conversation about my whiteness, the three of us sat down together to write the script for “White Wedding.”

Of all the movies coming up during the rest of this year, one that we’re particularly excited about is District 9, written and directed by Neill Blomkamp and Exec. Produced by Peter Jackson. We’ve talked about this movie before and had some info such as a poster and an earlier look at a shorter trailer for the film.
Now, we can bring you a good look at the new, full-length trailer for the sci-fi drama which stars Jason Cope, Kenneth Nkosi, and William Allen Young. At this point, we still don’t know a great deal about the story of the film. But from what we do know, an alien race has come to earth and is stranded in South Africa. At that point, the aliens are seen as yet another mistrusted minority, treated as “non-humans” and forced to live in a dangerous ghetto and work for little to no pay.

Yahoo has just released the first full trailer for District 9, and with it we get a lot more footage of aliens, things blowing up, and the general plot of the film. The first teaser gave us very little to go by, alluding that there were aliens, and they were being held hostage in South Africa. Now we know that they revolt, and cause a lot of havoc in the process.
The film stars Jason Cope, Kenneth Nkosi, and William Allen Young, with Peter Jackson producing and Neill Blomkamp directing. It looks as if it’s meant to utilize elements of Cloverfield with hand-held photography and bigger special effects. The one downfall is that there are gigantic robots, which seem to be everywhere in theaters this summer.

The only thing we’ve seen of the Peter Jackson-produced “District 9″ so far has been trying to sell us the viral side of the movie. It’s all very clever and cute, but it’s about time we saw some real plot from this movie, and this latest trailer does just that. I just hope that when all is said and done, this isn’t another movie about Government conspiracies and cover-ups, with the aliens ended up being exploited by the big bad humans and are just fighting back, etc. Man, that would be so predictable… An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly find a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology. Starring Sharlto Copley, David James, Jason Cope, Mandla Gaduka, Vanessa Haywood, Kenneth Nkosi, Louis Minnaar, William Allen Young, and Hlengiwe Madlala. Directed by Neill Blomkamp. Stay...

Three new images from Neill Blomkamp’s South African sci-fi drama “District 9″, which is quite the intriguing movie. As to the execution, well, that remains to be seen. But from everything I’ve seen of it, it sure looks like it has the potential to be good, or at the very least, something very different in sci-fi fiction. Being that it’s been a while since we’ve gotten something different, I think we should definitely give the film a shot.
