The Bear star Jeremy Allen White whipped up a second straight win for best actor in a television comedy at the 2024 Golden Globes.
“I love this show,” White said from the podium, thanking his team on the kitchen-centric FX/Hulu hit. “I love you guys so much. I must have done something right in this life to be in your company.”
Also nominated in the category were Bill Hader (Barry), Steve Martin (Only Murders in the Building), Jason Segel (Shrinking), Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building) and Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso).
Last year, White took home the Globe in the category for his work as chef Carmy on the first season of The Bear. Sudeikis prevailed in the category in the two years prior to that for playing the title character on Ted Lasso.
In his acceptance speech last year, White praised his Bear colleagues and said that the show “changed my life.

Christos Nikou’s “Fingernails” challenges the role of technology in modern love stories, with Jessie Buckley and Riz Ahmed starring as co-workers at a company that specializes in determining people’s soulmates based on their (you’re hearing this right) fingernails. The film first premiered at Telluride.
Buckley plays Anna, a new employee at the Love Institute, where the machines are housed. She starts training with senior instructor Amir (Ahmed), yet Anna is already committed to Ryan (Jeremy Allen White), and the machine has already confirmed they are a perfect match. So why is she developing feelings for Amir?
“Fingernails” is co-written by director Nikou, Stavros Raptis, and Sam Steiner, with Luke Wilson and Annie Murphy also starring.
The film is Nikou’s second feature and first English-language film after making his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed “Apples.” Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is among the producers of “Fingernails,” along with Nikou,...

Even Ayo Adebiri can’t bring herself to watch certain episodes of FX’s surprise smash “The Bear.” We get that, and so does Stephen Colbert.
“The Bear” seemingly came out of nowhere, though IndieWire was a very early adopter. Technically, we may be bigger supporters than Adebiri herself.
“I didn’t watch all the episodes, I think some were kind of hard to watch, if that makes sense,” Adebiri told Colbert on the January 4 “Late Show.”
“There’s massive tension,” Colbert, a fan who had to stop at Episode 7 for a break, offered. The CBS late-night host said he and his wife have yet to return to the program — but not because they don’t like it; they just needed to breathe. That sentiment should check out with pretty much any viewer of the Chicago-based sandwich-shop drama.

Dan Stevens and Alison Brie star in this horror-mystery, which has a nicely tense setup but degenerates into cliche
Initial high hopes are dashed at the third-act stage of this disappointing cabin-in-the-woods horror-mystery in which actor Dave Franco (brother of James) makes his directorial debut, co-writing with mumblecore film-maker Joe Swanberg.
Two couples rent an ocean-front beach house for a luxury weekend getaway: tech entrepreneur Charlie (Dan Stevens) and his partner Michelle (Alison Brie), with Charlie’s brother, Josh (Jeremy Allen White), and Josh’s partner, Mina (Sheila Vand), who is also the co-owner of Charlie’s tech startup. When the foursome arrives, they are instantly nettled by the guy showing them around the property: Taylor (Toby Huss) makes casually racist comments about Mina. And it turns out their ultra-fancy rental has some very strange things about it. Are they being spied on?...

When executive producer John Wells was working on the final season of “The West Wing” in 2006 he recalls having a very “easy” end point because the show began with the first year of Jed Bartlett’s presidential administration and, seven years later, it would be poetic to end with him leaving the office and a new president (Matt Santos) sworn in. Now that Wells is saying goodbye to another long-running, beloved series in Showtime’s “Shameless,” though, things are far more complicated.
“With this, we’re just following people’s lives,” Wells tells Variety of the Gallagher family on the Showtime dramedy. “We just have to walk away from them at some point.”
The premium cable network announced in January that “Shameless'” run would come to an end with its 11th season — a season that was supposed to begin shooting just two months later in March. But when production should have started rolling,...

Things are changing in the South Side.
Showtime on Tuesday dropped the full-length trailer for Shameless Season 11, and it's going to be tough to say goodbye.
There are many big talking points after the trailer, which finds Frank vowing to beat the gentrification of the South Side.
He makes it his mission to make his neighborhood dangerous all over again, but it appears that his plan may prove to be too little, too late.
Meanwhile, Ian and Mickey are still struggling to define their relationship despite getting married.
They need to arrive at a "mutual understanding" of how their marriage will work, but nothing is ever easy for them.
Returning Sunday, Dec. 8, Shameless‘ farewell features returning cast members include William H. Macy (as Frank), Jeremy Allen White (Lip), Kate Miner (Tami), Cameron Monaghan (Ian), Noel Fisher (Mickey), Emma Kenney (Debbie), Ethan Cutkosky (Carl), Christian Isaiah (Liam), Shanola Hampton (V), and...

The final season of Shameless is coming to Showtime this December, and the premium cabler has just dropped the first footage.
It shows the characters at very different stages in life than when we left them on Shameless Season 10.
The final season was originally slated to launch earlier this year, but due to the Covid-19 shutdowns that plagued most TV shows, it was delayed.
As a result, scripts were rewritten to incorporate the pandemic, which makes sense.
If you watch Shameless online, you know the Gallaghers would definitely be affected by the pandemic.
The series has typically brought social issues to the forefront.
“The final season of Shameless finds the Gallagher family and the South Side at a crossroads, with changes caused by the Covid pandemic, gentrification and aging to reconcile," reads Showtime's official descriptipn of the final season.

This summer, Dave Franco made his directorial debut with The Rental, a horror/thriller written by himself and Joe Swanberg (V/H/S) and starring Franco’s wife Alison Brie (Scream 4) and Dan Stevens (Apostle). Due to the pandemic, it skipped a typical theatrical release and went straight to VOD, and it proved to be a surprise smash, too, topping the on demand charts for two weeks running. Now, the movie has earned itself a pretty distinguished fan in the form of the Master of Horror himself, Stephen King.
The legendary author often lets fans know what he thinks of the latest horror flicks on social media, and on Wednesday night King took to Twitter to reveal that he really enjoyed The Rental. He remarked that while its concept wasn’t totally original, he appreciated Franco’s “wire-tight” plot and compared it the works of John D. MacDonald.

“The Rental” is the directorial debut of Dave Franco, and is co-written by him and Chicago filmmaker Joe Swanberg. It takes a modern situation – an online air-b-n-b style beach home rental – and twists it into the nostalgia of past horror films like “The Shining,” “Paranormal Activity” and “Friday the 13th.” It features Franco’s wife Alison Brie (“Community”), Dan Stevens (live action “Beauty and the Beast” ), Jeremy Allen White, Sheila Vand and Toby Huss. “Cats” is the 2019 film adaptation of the fourth longest running Broadway play in history, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and adapted from a 1939 poetry collection by T.S. Eliot.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
“The Rental” is the directorial debut of Dave Franco, and is co-written by him and Chicago filmmaker Joe Swanberg. It takes a modern situation – an online air-b-n-b style beach home rental – and twists it into the nostalgia of past horror films like “The Shining,” “Paranormal Activity” and “Friday the 13th.” It features Franco’s wife Alison Brie (“Community”), Dan Stevens (live action “Beauty and the Beast” ), Jeremy Allen White, Sheila Vand and Toby Huss. It was made available on VOD and limited theatrical release on July 24th.

Dave Franco’s directorial debut, horror/thriller The Rental, is now available to watch online as you can buy or, ironically, rent it from various platforms. It’s also showing in select drive-in theaters, but if you prefer to stay digital, here’s everything you need to know.
As written by Franco and Joe Swanberg, The Rental stars Franco’s real-life wife Alison Brie and Dan Stevens (Eurovision), as well as Sheila Vand and Jeremy Allen White, as two couples who stay at an Airbnb vacation home in a remote location, only for things to turn sinister. At a time when we’re being discouraged from taking unnecessary trips, The Rental will probably do the job of convincing you to stay home this summer.
You can rent or buy the movie from whatever platform you prefer to get your films from, including iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Prime or Vudu. If you wish to rent it,...

At the very beginning of “The Rental,” actor Dave Franco’s feature directorial debut, the screen is filled with shots of a lovely coastline and a striking resort house nestled in the woods overlooking the sea. But right about the time a viewer might start thinking, “How beautiful,” a couple of bars of Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans’ doomy, foreboding music remind us that beauty and pleasure are not on Franco’s agenda.
So go ahead and enjoy the view for a minute — certainly, the characters in the film written by Franco and mumblecore kingpin Joe Swanberg do. But neither the characters nor the audience should ever get comfortable, because there are lots of bad things waiting to happen in this intriguing but disjointed cross between an indie relationship drama and a horror film.
In a way, it makes sense that the IFC release was forced to have its premiere...

Amazon Studios brings the story of Marie Curie to the screen with Radioactive starring Oscar-nominated actress Rosamund Pike as the pioneering scientist.
Directed by Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) and written by Jack Thorne, Radioactive is based on the 2010 graphic novel Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout by Lauren Redniss. The film adaptation follows Curie’s life and the legacy of scientific breakthroughs. At the same time, the story tells the darker consequences that came about after her amazing work.
Curie married fellow scientist Pierre Curie (Sam Riley) who went on to raise two daughters and change the face of science forever by jointly winning the Nobel for the discovery of radium in 1903. After the death of her husband, Curie continues her research and invites scandal when she has an affair with another prominent scientist, Paul Langevin (Aneurin Barnard). However, it is Marie’s commitment to science which prevails,...

While horror movies that predate The Rental may have tended to focus on a central idea and then stick on that one solid concept throughout, this film offers twists and turns that do not necessarily all end up being good choices. Although there is a solid film hidden somewhere in this often-cluttered thriller that tries to be all things to everyone, it would probably have been better off had it simply stuck to one-story tract early on instead of veering to explore as many unrelated genre tropes as it ultimately does.
Everything starts off relatively benign when brothers Charlie (Dan Stevens) and Josh (Jeremy Allen White) take Charlie’s wife, Michelle (Alison Brie), and Josh’s girlfriend, Mina (Sheila Vand), to an oceanside house they have rented for the weekend to celebrate a relatively successful business deal that Charlie and Mina have just secured. It looks like whatever crystal ball (maybe more of a big fishbowl) Hollywood was consulting certainly proved it’s worth. That’s because with most of the country on near-constant “staycation” (the other countries have pretty much shut their doors in our faces) the studios have supplied an almost constant stream (I should say “streaming”) supply of films concerning characters in “faraway places” or on their way to getaways. Vicariously we’ve been to Naples (Piranhas), Cornwall (Four Kids And It), and a funny Trip To Greece. But this country’s not been left out with last weekend’s Easy Does It driving a battered Mustang from Mississippi to Texas and stalling out in sunny San Clemente, CA. What’s the destination this week. Well, let’s head north to the Portland area, or nearby, to spend a wild long weekend with two fun-loving couples ready to kick back and...

A diabolically clever script by actor-turned-director Dave Franco and mumblecore pioneer Joe Swanberg, The Rental has a simple premise: Take two couples with volatile sexual dynamics, have them rent an AirBNB for a weekend on the rugged Oregon coast, mix in secret cameras and the presence of a peeping psycho, and spike the steadily-building suspense with psychological insights. Yes, this is well-covered territory — see the recent You Should Have Left, which didn’t work at all. Yet Franco’s behind-the-cameras debut is sure to strike a chord for Covid-trapped audiences.
