When chef Marco Pierre White published his autobiography in 2006, his infamously tumultuous life was guaranteed to be a dramatic read. Originally titled White Slave, the book was released in America under the new moniker, The Devil In The Kitchen, and readers were not disappointed. Now, it seems the story of the man widely regarded as the first ‘celebrity chef’ may be headed for the screen, as Ridley Scott, Giannina Facio and Colet Abedi have optioned the work for development.
Following the man from his humble and tragic beginnings in Leeds, UK, to the height of fame and fortune at the centre of London’s restaurant scene, The Devil In The Kitchen depicts the genesis of “the godfather of modern cooking.” Earning his stripes from some of the best chefs in the country, such as Albert Roux and Raymond Blanc, White himself would go on to train Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal,...

Ruby Tandoh has spoken out against the apparent "nastiness... bitterness and bile" from commentators about this year's Great British Bake Off.
The finalist wrote a piece in The Guardian responding to things written about her and other contestants.
> 'Great British Bake Off' 2013: Did Ruby, Frances or Kimberley win?
"I am surprised at just how much nastiness was generated from the show," Tandoh said.
"Despite the saccharin sweetness of the Bake Off, an extraordinary amount of bitterness and bile has spewed forth every week from angry commentators, both on social media and in the press."
She continued: "The criticism ranged from the gently cynical to the downright obnoxious, but as the series went on I noticed an increasing degree of personal vitriol and misogyny.
"We (female) finalists are supposedly too meek, too confident, too thin, too domestic, too smiley, too taciturn."
Tandoh continued: "I am tired of defending myself against the boring,...

Frances Quinn has won the fourth series of The Great British Bake Off.
The finale saw the three all-female finalists bake a Picnic Pie, undertake a pretzel technical challenge and lastly a wedding cake showstopper.
After discovering that she had won, beating fellow bakers Ruby Tandoh, 21, and Kimberley Wilson, 30, to the crown, Quinn said: "Oh good God. I hoped, I dreamt it, but I don't think I ever truly truly believed it."
The 31-year-old added: "I'm over the moon. I don't think I'm going to realise exactly what's hit me for two days, but right now I feel on cloud nine."
Meanwhile, judge Paul Hollywood said: "Frances is a deserved winner. When it came to the showstopper, she just beat the other two guys hands down. She not only gave us the style, but the substance too."
Mary Berry added: "Frances has many qualities, she has attention to detail, she's got excellent flavours.

James Morton has criticised "haters" who insult people on The Great British Bake Off.
Last year's finalist on the BBC Two competition hit out at people who continuously take insults about contestants too far on Twitter.
> Great British Bake Off: The Final - Live Blog
Writing on his blog, Morton stated that he was upset to read "fascist publications" that document "abhorrent" comments online.
He said: "This year's cruelty isn't a unique occurrence to any particular Bake Off contestant. It happens across the board; it was there last year and, like these last few weeks, was targeted at the perceived younger and more attractive women."
Referencing chef Raymond Blanc's criticisms of the show earlier this week, Morton wrote: "I respect that some of you hurling your e-faeces at the wonderful Ms Tandoh et al are genuine e-w*nkers. And I guess that many of you, like Mr Blanc, forgivably...

It was certainly good enough for an institution." He also marked some of the meals, saying: "I tried the steamed (more)...

I'm not even sure what to say about Last Restaurant Standing at this point. Last night's season finale of Last Restaurant Standing ("The Banquet") proved to me that the producers have irreparably damaged this once promising and engaging format. It's rare for me to go from obsessively loving a series to loathing it from one season to the next but the third season of this culinary competition series (which airs in the UK as The Restaurant) has been so shockingly dismal and so poorly produced that it took all of my energy to keep watching it to the (very) bitter end. Yes, a winner was named last night for the third season and I can't help but be shocked and depressed by the results, which proves the producers--and quite possibly Raymond Blanc himself--were more interested in concept and uniqueness than in finding partners who could actually, you know, cook. Just...

I'm not quite sure what to make of the couples assembled for this season of BBC America's Last Restaurant Standing (which airs in the UK under the title The Restaurant). As always, they are a motley lot comprised of people who believe that they can open a restaurant because they give good dinner party and those who seemingly have no knowledge of food, no culinary training, and no common sense. Last night's episode of Last Restaurant Standing ("Opening Night"), the season's third, finally had the couples getting the keys to their very own restaurant spaces, picked at random and representing a number of diverse locations all around the city of Bristol, from quayside eateries to balconied high-traffic spaces. To me, this is where any season of Last Restaurant Standing should really begin. I appreciated what Raymond Blanc and the producers attempted with the first week auditions and the second...

I've long been captivated by BBC America's culinary competition series, Last Restaurant Standing (a.k.a. The Restaurant in the UK), which returns with its third season tonight. While Last Restaurant Standing returns tonight, the series is a slightly different beast than in its two previous iterations. While chef/restaurateur Raymond Blanc and judges Sarah Willingham and David Moore all return and the overall premise of the series--"couples" compete to open their own restaurant--remains the same, there's something slightly different going on here. For one, Last Restaurant Standing's format has changed, reducing the episode count and sucking out some of the series' nail-biting tension. In the UK, previous seasons of the competition series aired twice a week, with one episode devoted to the couples running their individual restaurants, amid frequent complications sprung on them by Raymond Blanc, and the second devoted to the Challenge, a gauntlet of fire...

Jj and James are the winners of BBC Two’s The Restaurant. In the final show they secured the dream prize of joining Raymond Blanc and his partners Sarah Willingham and David Moore in opening a new restaurant.
Jj and James said: “We’re over the moon to be beginning one of the greatest journeys of our lives.
“To be opening a restaurant with Raymond Blanc is a dream come true and we hope we can live up to his expectations and those of industry experts Sarah and David.
“We hope it will be an incredible partnership that will stand the test of time.”
The series began with nine couples competing for the opportunity of running their own restaurant. They faced culinary challenges from working in high street chains to organising a tea dance and holding a cookery master class – all the while dealing with the hard reality of running their own restaurants.

BBC America has today announced their scheduling plans for January 2010, unveiling new programming additions and the return of several series to the lineup. (Sadly, still no mention of Season Two of Ashes to Ashes, however.) The digital cabler has announced launch dates for comedy The Inbetweeners, drama Demons, and unscripted competition series Last Restaurant Standing, as well as the launch of Season Thirteen of Top Gear. Having seen the first two seasons of comedy The Inbetweeners, from creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, I can tell you that you'll likely be bowled over as much as I was by this raucous teen comedy when it finally premieres Stateside on Monday, January 25th at 9 pm Et/Pt. Two back-to-back episodes will air in its initial outing before it relocates to its regular timeslot on Wednesday evenings. NBC is bringing Last Restaurant Standing to America under the (apparently) hipper moniker The Chopping Block, and they've managed somehow to create a cooking/restaurant show that doesn't star Gordon Ramsay. This particular venture into culinary reality stars Marco Pierre White (at one time involved with the UK's version of Hell's Kitchen), Ramsay's mentor, competition, friend, and nemesis. Theirs is the most bizarre of relationships, which has found White appearing on Ramsay's BBC shows at one time, and the two feuding bitterly at others. Until now, only Ramsay has made his way to American television. Now White is crossing the pond with a show that has proven itself (at least to some degree) on BBC. Last Restaurant Standing has taken things on a slightly different spin, by giving couples restaurants to run, and closing one restaurant each week. The show stars restaurateur Raymond Blanc, and offers up weekly challenges and miles of critique.
