While there may be a serious lack of theatrical horror coming our way this Halloween season, fear not genre fans, as we have over 15 different horror and sci-fi titles making their way onto smaller screens this October, which should help take the sting off a bit. Several great films I happened to catch earlier on this year at various festivals – The Greasy Strangler, In A Valley of Violence and Under the Shadow – are all making their VOD debuts this month, and you also have the remastered version of Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm and the series final sequel, Phantasm: Ravager, to look forward to as well.
Other notable VOD releases for October 2016 include The Windmill, The Unspoken, ClownTown, Fear, Inc., Vampyres, Halloweed, and Goddess of Love from Jon Knautz (The Shrine, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer).

“Are We Not Cats,” the closing night screening at the Venice International Film Critics’ Week, is the strange but tender story of a man who attempts to restart his life, but is sidetracked when he meets a woman who shares his unorthodox habit, a proclivity for eating hair. In honor of its unique premise, the New York-based filmmakers commissioned Iranian artist Morteza Mottaghi to create an art piece for the film’s key art, which will premiere along with the film at Venice. The piece was created completely from 100% human hair – including hair from Mottaghi’s own grandmother – and then the poster adapted and designed by Giant Films, a graphic design firm based in Mexico City. Following its premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, Jim Hosking’s The Greasy Strangler will be released in theaters and on VOD by FilmRise on October 7th. The independent section of the festival – dedicated to features from debut directors – includes seven titles from five continents.
Opening the strand with be UK director Alice Lowe’s Prevenge (out of competition), which stars Lowe as a pregnant woman on a killing spree and will have its world premiere at the festival.
Lowe was co-writer and co-star of Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers. The film is a Western Edge Pictures/Gennaker production and was shot in Wales last year.

The Cannes Marché and genre market Frontières have revealed the three work-in-progress titles that will be screened as part of their inaugural partnership at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Taking place on May 15, the Frontières Day at the Marché will feature a trio of films that are all in the post-production stage and are seeking sales agents, distribution and completion funding.

Fantastic Fest is truly a unique event. There’s plenty of room for arthouse films and, on some occasions, the big awards players, but one theater that hosts There Will Be Blood might, the next night, see the premiere of something you’d catch on a weird cable station at 3 A.M. You don’t get that at Venice.
Such a programming mentality is reflected in the second set of titles: We have Leos Carax‘s acclaimed Holy Motors, Rian Johnson‘s Looper, horror anthology The ABCs of Death (as if it could premiere anywhere else), Sinister, and a whole batch of films I’d never heard of up until now. It’s wonderfully eclectic, and it only makes me wish I could be there come late September.
