The pitch was "Rambo in an office building." In the 1980s, the idea of a Rambo type in anything, anywhere would at least get your project shuttled down the studio production pipeline. 20th Century Fox rightly believed they had a potential winner in "Die Hard." So why was the project anathema to every A-list movie star in Hollywood?
Perhaps it was the pedigree. "Die Hard" was an adaptation of Roderick Thorp's action novel "Nothing Lasts Forever," the author's 1979 sequel to his 1966 bestseller "The Detective." That cop thriller had been turned into a 1968 star vehicle for Frank Sinatra, who was nearing the end of his 1960s big-screen comeback. It was a solid hit for 20th Century Fox, but, despite a feint toward grittiness, it was viewed as nothing more than a paycheck gig for the Chairman.
So 20 years later, when Fox spied blockbuster potential in Thorp's sequel (which was...

Die Hard is an unquestioned action masterpiece. Thanks to revelatory performances by both Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman, plus John McTiernan’s assured direction, Die Hard still has the power to awe and entertain even decades after its release. Few can say the same about the sequels, but what about the Die Hard prequel, The Detective?
Oh, you’ve never heard of a Die Hard prequel? Well, that could be because the 1968 Frank Sinatra vehicle The Detective is based on the 1966 novel by the same name, written by Roderick Thorp. And in 1979, Thorp published a sequel to The Detective called Nothing Lasts Forever, in which criminals led by a man called Gruber take control of a Los Angeles high-rise during a company party. Gruber even holds hostage the family member of a hero cop who must go rogue upstairs if he is going to thwart the terrorists. Also it’s Christmas time.

The series, which comes from Paramount Television Studios, stars Crystal as a child psychologist and recent widower who encounters a troubled young boy. The series is written by Sarah Thorp (“The Bounty Hunter”) and Adam Bernstein (“Fargo”) is directing the pilot. Crystal, Thorp, Bernstein, Jet Wilkinson (“The Old Man”) and Eric Roth (“Dune”) serve as executive producers for the series.
The series had been filming in Hoboken, New Jersey, and was temporarily shut down by WGA picketing earlier this month before being placed on an indefinite pause. Other series that have been halted on the East Coast include Disney+’s “Daredevil: Born Again” and Max’s “The Penguin.” In Montana, the “Yellowstone” prequel “1923” was also put on hold until the strike ends.

A pivotal moment during King Charles’ coronation came when Prince William pledged to be a liege man to his father. As the only senior working royal to do so, all eyes were on William during this crucial moment in the ceremony. However, one popular British actor didn’t believe William did his best, claiming he had to use cue cards to get through the pivotal statement.

Editors note: This review was originally published May 22 after its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The film opened in New York on Wednesday and today in Los Angeles.
Timing can be cruel. Norwegian director Kristoffer Borgli’s second feature, Sick of Myself, has the misfortune to arrive in the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section in the slipstream of Ruben Östlund’s divisive but funny competition title Triangle of Sadness; the latter being a broader, sillier but much more brutal dissection of class and culture. Sick of Myself also has to compete with the unexpected longevity of fellow countryman Joachim Trier’s hit The Worst Person In The World, which last year went from the Cannes competition all the way to the Oscars.

Sick of Myself presents a modern body horror story rooted in limitless narcissism that’s as disturbing as it is hilarious.
“I love to live.”
The body horror sub-genre has become increasingly popular, especially since greater breakthroughs in prosthetics and practical effects now allow for unprecedented spectacles. It’s easier than ever to gross out an audience with disturbing visuals, but the best body horror movies are the ones that don’t just disgust viewers, but also attempt to say something about the very human nature that’s being perverted. Kristoffer Borgli’s Sick of Myself is Norwegian body horror that sadly feels especially relevant and consumed by modern anxieties. The need for attention and external validation turns into a self-destructive examination of what it means to really live. With seemingly-authentic mountaineering sequences, this is a visually resplendent film about peak-scaling – just don’t look down at the plot
There’s an eerie closeup in Summit Fever of hair rising on the wrist of lead character Michael (Freddie Thorp), prior to a lightning strike. Julian Gilbey’s mountaineering drama isn’t just visually resplendent, it also has an impressive tactile familiarity with its milieu – placing its actors on real rock faces on the Eiger, Matterhorn and Mont Blanc mountains – that results in super-authentic climbing sequences (at least to this non-climber). Too bad then that it fumbles its dramatic handholds with a risible sub-Point Break storyline about peak-scaling addiction.
Thorp plays a Keanu-esque newbie who has quit his finance job to chase the Chamonix dream. Egged on by his loudmouth climbing partner Jp (Michel Biel), Michael starts to push his limits on the region’s slopes, starting with the terrifyingly sheer Dent du Géant.
