Last Thursday, FX confirmed that its adaptation of James Clavell’s “Shōgun” will continue past its first season and thus compete as a drama series rather than a limited one at the upcoming Emmys. Since it had spent the preceding three weeks as Gold Derby’s predicted Best Limited Series winner and was expected to reap several acting nominations, every drama and limited race was shaken up by its reclassification – and the dust still has not settled.
Within 48 hours of the “Shōgun” shift, our 2,500+ Emmy predictors came to the consensus that it will be nominated for Best Drama Series and all of the corresponding main acting awards. Even lead actor Cosmo Jarvis and supporting actress Moeka Hoshi, who never quite managed to reach predicted nominee status before, quickly broke into our forecasted drama lineups. Jarvis and his seemingly more secure lead male costar, Hiroyuki Sanada, displaced both Tom Hiddleston (“Loki...

Every time a TV show comes to an end, it's a good time to look back at the story and see what could have been done better. In many cases, the finale comes a few seasons too late, as the writers try to salvage the story and keep viewers interested, but fall flat at every other attempt.
There aren't many shows that have the guts to make a decision and leave in their prime, but every time it happens, viewers should make sure to watch it as a reminder of how real talent cares about not having their work messed with. From what it looks like, The Outlaws is now going to join this list.

Stephen Merchant has revealed he has no plans for further episodes of The Outlaws after the incoming series three: more details here.
Stephen Merchant took the British comedy scene by storm in 2001 when he wrote and directed The Office with Ricky Gervais. Since then, they have collaborated on Extras, Life’s Too Short, An Idiot Abroad and feature film Cemetery Junction. He went on to forge a successful solo career, from stand up tour Hello Ladies and the American sitcom of the same name to his successful pivot into hour long crime comedy with The Outlaws, which returns for its third series next week.
Created by Merchant and Elgin James, the show follows a disparate group of people assigned to community service for various reasons which gradually reveal themselves.
Merchant himself plays the socially awkward lawyer Greg, Baby Reindeer star Jessica Gunning plays hardnosed supervisor Diane, Rhianne Barreto plays Oxford hopeful Rani,...

Baby Reindeer star Jessica Gunning says she has got Richard Gadd’s back amid a backlash against his megahit Netflix series.
Gunning told The Radio Times that she is not engaging with comments made by Fiona Harvey, the woman she played in Baby Reindeer under the name Martha.
Baby Reindeer tells the “true story” of Gadd’s experience with an alleged stalker, but Harvey denies claims made by the series and said she had not been convicted of stalking.
Harvey has told her story to Piers Morgan, The Daily Record, and others. She is now considering legal action against Netflix, Gadd, and producer Clerkenwell Films.
Gunning said she was concerned about the impact Harvey’s interviews might be having on Gadd, whom she described as a “survivor” of sexual assault and stalking.

The creator of the BBC/Amazon hit said “never say never” on making more but “the problem at the moment is whenever I finish a project I feel a bit burned out and need to take some time away to regroup.”
He said there are no plans to make more Outlaws as it currently stands and he is instead preparing for a stand-up comedy tour and working on developing film scripts, along with exec producing Greg Daniels’ upcoming The Office spin-off.
“I think this series concludes in a very nice way and hopefully might bring a tear to the eye, so if it does then that would be great,” Merchant told Deadline in the days leading up to Season 3 premiere. “I am so pleased it’s run this long. I’ve enjoyed the cast,...

“Baby Reindeer,” the Netflix series that has taken the world by storm since dropping last month, boldly opens with the claim that “This is a true story.”
“Baby Reindeer” is a brutal account of former comedian Richard Gadd’s life in his twenties as he attempted to conquer the world of entertainment. In the process, he is sexually assaulted by a senior figure in the comedy world and harassed by a stalker he met while working in a pub. The woman who claims to be the real stalker, Fiona Harvey, has now said she intends to take legal action against Gadd and possibly Netflix, though no claims have yet been filed.
Gadd wrote and starred in the series, which is produced by Clerkenwell Films, playing a fictionalized version of himself called Donny Dunn.
Gadd has also said he fictionalized his stalker, named Martha in the series, telling Variety last month:...

Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer quickly captivated audiences around the globe upon its debut on Netflix. However, what intrigued viewers most was the real-life events that served as the show’s inspiration. As fans attempt to uncover the identity of the sexual abuser who inspired a character, the situation has escalated to the point where legal action is being considered, creating a whirlwind of controversy that shows no signs of calming down.

This situation arose when some people claimed that the television industry knew the identity of Gadd’s sexual abuser, who is portrayed by actor Tom Goodman-Hill in the comedian’s popular miniseries. However, seeing how people have kept their quiet despite knowing the identity of the alleged abuser English broadcaster Piers Morgan criticized industry insiders for not disclosing the name. Exclusive: A British lawmaker has challenged Netflix to provide evidence for the claim that Baby Reindeer’s real-life Martha has a stalking conviction.
John Nicolson, a Scottish National Party MP who sits on UK Parliament’s influential Culture, Media and Sport Committee, said Netflix had a duty to back up claims made in Richard Gadd’s “true story” hit series after Martha was identified as Fiona Harvey.
In a letter seen by Deadline, Nicolson asked Benjamin King, Netflix’s senior UK director of public policy, to provide evidence of Harvey’s criminal record after he told the committee that Baby Reindeer was a “true story of the horrific abuse” suffered by Gadd “at the hands of a convicted stalker.”

“Baby Reindeer” has quickly become a cultural juggernaut, with viewers swarming to watch this Netflix limited series written and created by Richard Gadd, who also stars. He adapted his Olivier Award-winning play about his years as a struggling comedian when he was stalked and harassed by a woman, played the fabulous Jessica Gunning. The show also depicts his abuse at the hands of an older man who first acted as a mentor. The series is a tough watch at times but always a gripping one. It’s searing television and, as a result, “Baby Reindeer” is one of the most acclaimed shows of the year.
Aramide Tinubu (Variety) declared: “Shocking, hilarious, painful, and devastating, ‘Baby Reindeer’ is a rare gem on television, reminding us of what is possible in the medium.”
David Opie (Empire) observed: “Richard Gadd confronts and processes his real-life trauma in a brave, moving, and often disturbing...

Jessica Gunning is having a moment.
The veteran actress has earned raves for playing unhinged stalker Martha in Netflix’s critically acclaimed limited series Baby Reindeer opposite Richard Gadd. It’s a part she’s embracing as the role of a lifetime, but she’s no overnight sensation. West Yorkshire native Gunning, 38, has been acting ever since graduating from drama school at London’s Rose Bruford College with a long list of credits that includes Doctor Who, White Heat, The Outlaws and Pride.
Baby Reindeer, created by and starring Gadd as inspired by his traumatic real life experiences, casts him as Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian who encounters a lonely woman at the bar where he works. The chance encounter, during which he offers her a free cup of tea, spirals over several months as Gunning’s Martha is revealed to be a dangerous, serial stalker. Gunning recently stopped by...

Within the past week, Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo”) lost and then regained her first place position on our Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress Emmy odds chart. She is being given a run for her money by small screen newcomer Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”), who maintained general frontrunner status from May 9-12 and is still our experts’ pick to win, as has been the case since May 3.
A week ago, Reis was also our editors’ predicted winner, but they have since gravitated back toward Leigh. Based on the forecasts of 2,400+ Gold Derby users, both women currently have 6/1 odds in their race, with their closest competitor being Aja Naomi King (“Lessons in Chemistry”) at 15/2.
The temporary toppling of Leigh occurred three weeks after “Shōgun” overtook “Fargo” in the Best Limited Series race. Since then, the consensus among our readers has been that the latter show’s best shot...

Although we all hear about the miracle stories of celebrities who get noticed and go on to have extremely successful careers, there are many actors who aren't lucky enough to get the same treatment. Sometimes it's a matter of talent, and sometimes they just don't meet the standards of many roles.
Either way, the older the actors are, the more effort they have put into their careers over the years. Sometimes it takes a couple of decades to get the role of your dreams, and that is what happened to Baby Reindeer star Jessica Gunning, who is now known to the whole world.

Richard Gadd is just going to let the internet do its thing. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published Monday, the Baby Reindeer creator reiterated that he would not confirm or deny the real-life identities of the people portrayed in the Netflix show.
“I know for every single part, there’s been about five or six people who have been sort of named as each part, even all the way down to the pub manager,” Gadd said. “The internet’s always going to do its thing. I can’t really comment on that.

Richard Gadd on ‘Baby Reindeer’ Phenomenon, Losing Anonymity and What He Won’t Ever Comment on Again
On a recent Friday, Richard Gadd ducked into a London pub before seeing his favorite band the Pogues hit the stage. A quiet night with friends quickly derailed into a fan frenzy to the massive popularity of Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, the critically acclaimed limited series that Gadd created and stars in based on traumatic real-life experiences.
“It was bedlam, it was chaos,” he explains of the scene that unfolded as patrons, one after another, rushed over to share stories about how the seven episodes had affected them. “I thought, ‘Oh, I can’t really go into pubs anymore and expect to sit quietly in a corner and have some food.” A similar situation played out on the plane when Gadd flew to Los Angeles for press and appearances in early May, as the pilots exited the cockpit upon hearing he was a passenger. “That was quite surreal. The spring sun blazed down on London’s Royal Festival Hall for the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday and the conditions were right for Baby Reindeer to bask in its success.

Ever since Richard Gadd revealed that Baby Reindeer is based on true events in his personal life, it is as though the world is talking more about the hypothetical culprits than the series itself. This article contains spoilers for "Baby Reindeer."
The Netflix series "Baby Reindeer" is based on the award-winning one-man show written and performed by comedian Richard Gadd, who wrote the piece based on his own experiences with having been stalked. Since the show's debut on April 11, 2024, "Baby Reindeer" has stayed on the Netflix most-watched charts, becoming the obsession of viewers across the globe. Gadd stars as Donny Dunn, a fictionalized version of himself, meaning he is re-enacting his trauma for the world to see in every episode. Donny is stalked by a woman named Martha Scott, brought to life in a phenomenal, star-making performance by Jessica Gunning. Gadd's story is very real, but in the interest of protecting Martha's identity, as well as the identities of everyone else featured in the series inspired by real people, names and events were altered with Gadd's creative licensing.

Exclusive: The British government has fired a warning shot at Netflix amid the Baby Reindeer safeguarding scandal, saying it will be held to “high standards” under new streaming laws.

Fiona Harvey, the woman claiming to be the real-life stalker who inspired Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, sat for her first on-camera interview since the limited series became a cultural phenomenon, joining Piers Morgan for an hourlong interview posted to his YouTube channel on Thursday.
Harvey claims she had no choice in coming forward — “I was forced into this situation” — after “internet sleuths” tracked her down and lodged death threats. She had recently sat down with The Daily Mail (allegedly later stalking that reporter) and been accused in another story of stalking a Glasgow couple (and threatening them with death). But the conversation on Piers Morgan Uncensored has brought the Baby Reindeer brouhaha to another level.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the limited races, now with “Baby Reindeer” in the mix.

To wit: Netflix smash “Baby Reindeer” is only in fifth place in our odds, even though it’s all-but-assured of being extremely win-competitive in this race and could usurp “Shōgun” in the end as the year’s one true sensation of the year (if the latter doesn’t move to drama as widely speculated this week). You were the earliest adopter of the Netflix juggernaut, which made landfall in Los Angeles this week for a splashy FYC event. The show feels assured of several top nominations,...

Richard Gadd has said he has been shocked by the success of Baby Reindeer and his new-found fame amid blurring lines between the Netflix series and reality.
In an interview with The Daily Record newspaper, Gadd said he thought Baby Reindeer would just be “a little cult artistic gem” rather than the monster hit it has become.
“It was, like, crazy. I never expected it to sort of blow up like this,” Gadd said. “I believed it would be successful but I didn’t expect overnight, I don’t even like to use this word, fame.”
He added: “I really believed in this show but it really felt like one day it went on the platform and the next day there were people camping in my garden.”
His thinking might explain why Netflix and Clerkenwell Films did not do more to protect the identities of the characters involved in Gadd...

The woman believed to be the inspiration for Richard Gadd’s Netflix megahit “Baby Reindeer” has denied being a stalker.
Fiona Harvey, who is said to have inspired the character of Gadd’s stalker Martha, appeared on Piers Morgan’s YouTube talk show “Piers Morgan Uncensored” in a pre-recorded interview on Thursday evening U.K. time, where she told Morgan she is taking legal action against both Netflix and Gadd and the truth will come out during the legal process.
“I didn’t write him the emails,” she told Morgan, denying that she had sent over 41,000 emails and 100 letters to Gadd while allegedly stalking him.
When asked by Morgan who did send Gadd the emails, Harvey replied: “I think he probably made them up himself, I’ve no idea.”
She also described the situation as “obscene” and “horrendous,” although said she hadn’t watched the show but had been told...

Piers Morgan Teases Interview With Real-Life ‘Baby Reindeer’ Stalker as Netflix Responds to Hysteria
Another day, another series of Baby Reindeer headlines.
The breakout hit limited series from Netflix — created by and starring Scottish comedian Richard Gadd inspired by a traumatic, six-year-long stalking incident — has inspired a flurry of coverage following an April 11 debut as it rocketed to the top of the streamer’s TV viewing charts for three straight weeks. Because Gadd pulled from personal experience to craft the true crime tale, journalists and internet sleuths have attempted to track down the real people behind Baby Reindeer‘s characters.
The focus has fallen on two characters in particular: the stalker Martha, played by Jessica Gunning, and the creative mentor Darrien who drugged and sexually assaulted Gadd, played by Tom Goodman-Hill. The fever burned so hot and inspired so many stories that Gadd took to Instagram to urge fans to stop the speculation because innocent people were getting caught in the mess. “That’s...

Jessica Gunning, who plays the haunting stalker Martha in Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer,” says creator and star Richard Gadd was on her radar even before she auditioned for the show — ever since she saw his one-man show “Monkey See Monkey Do” at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
“I just thought it was one of the most profound things I’ve ever seen really on stage,” she said. “Then I tried to go and see ‘Baby Reindeer’ the play, but it was sold out. So, I actually bought the play text, which is a bit Martha of me.”

Netflix has argued that it took care to disguise the identities of the real-life Baby Reindeer characters after the show’s extraordinary success sparked an internet guessing game.
In some of Netflix’s first comments about the viral circus surrounding Baby Reindeer, policy chief Benjamin King told a UK Parliament hearing that the streamer was satisfied with duty of care standards on the show.
King told lawmakers that Netflix and producer Clerkenwell Films took “every reasonable precaution in disguising the real-life identities of the people involved in that story.”
John Nicolson, a Scottish National Party MP who sits on the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, pointed out that this had not prevented the character of Martha from being identified online.
Baby Reindeer was billed as a “true story” and provides a searingly raw account of comedian Richard Gadd’s experience with an alleged stalker.

Baby Reindeer, the latest runaway hit on Netflix, is a story about a stalker on the surface. However, upon watching the show, it becomes evident that it deals with serious themes of mental health issues, trauma, sexual abuse, and the unhealthy pattern of self-sabotaging loops that are not very unfamiliar to most of us. The show starts with Martha (Jessica Gunning), a middle-aged woman who is obese and looks pale, walking into a bar and getting a free drink offered by Donny (Richard Gadd). Sounds simple enough, right? But things go into an uncontrollable spiral from here, and with each episode, the audience is sucked more and more into the horrors that Donny faces because of his deeds and past trauma that do not let him act rationally.

Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer finds stand-up comedian Donny (Gadd) living with his ex-girlfriend’s mother (Nina Sosanya) and working at a Camden pub to supplement his failing career. When, one day, Martha (Jessica Gunning), an overweight middle-aged woman who claims to be a successful lawyer but can’t afford a cup of tea, sits down at the bar, Donny offers it to her on the house. That cup of tea will initiate a years-long “relationship” that will initially flatter Donny’s ego but later prove to be both degrading and petrifying.
The series was adapted from Gadd’s autobiographical one-man stage show of the same name, and the actor-writer lends Donny such a piercingly unique voice. Gadd narrates his own horror story with a snappy matter-of-factness, like he’s reluctant to ruminate on one stomach-churning detail for too long before moving on to the next, and a self-awareness that’s never navel-gazing.

Prolific author Stephen King was such a fan of Netflix’s Baby Reindeer that he penned an entire article praising the show, calling it “one of the best things” he’s ever seen. In an article for the U.K.’s Times, King said a friend had recommended the hit series to him, saying it made Misery, both the book and the film, “look like a kids’ cartoon.” “Like 13.3 million other Netflix subscribers, I tried it and found myself sucked in, unable to look away,” King wrote. “My first thought was to thank God my novel came first, or people would assume I’d stolen it from Richard Gadd.” Baby Reindeer, written by and starring Richard Gadd, centers on Gadd’s Donny Dunn, a struggling stand-up comedian who takes pity on a lonely woman, Martha (Jessica Gunning), at the bar where he works. It is the spring of “Baby Reindeer.” Netflix’s addictive limited series about a struggling comedian (Richard Gadd) working at a bar who makes the biggest mistake of his life when he gives a lonely woman (Jessica Gunning) a cup of tea on the house is the most watched series currently on the streamer and viewership is growing. And the fact that it’s based on a true story, makes “Baby Reindeer” even more creep and chilling. It’s a must-see voyeur thriller.
The same was true in the fall of 1987 with Adrian Lyne’s “Fatal Attraction.” Audiences flocked to the hard R-rated thriller which starred a wild-haired Glenn Close as an editor with a publishing company who has one-night stand with a happily married attorney (Michael Douglas) whose wife and daughter are out of town. Though it’s “understood” that it’s just a fling, Close’s Alex just won’t let go.

Baby Reindeer has been a major success for Netflix, which should be no surprise considering the topics that modern viewers latch onto such as mental health and stalking. And while creator Richard Gadd did intend to shed a light on both without exploiting either, this may be backfiring, as the supposed real-life inspiration is considering legal action, claiming, “I’m the victim. He’s written a bloody show about me.”
As per The Daily Mail, the unnamed woman stated, “He’s using Baby Reindeer to stalk me now,” adding that Gadd had turned to “bullying an older woman on television for fame and fortune.”
As for just who the woman is, Gadd has been adamant that he wants fans to stop trying to work out the identities of the Baby Reindeer subjects, saying they are only doing a disservice to the miniseries. Yet, that certainly hasn’t stopped people from doing the research.
