Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, died in 1961. But questions surrounding his tragic passing in a plane crash, and his sexuality, refuse to die down.
“We know who he is, but we don’t know that much about him,” says director Per Fly, now bringing “Hammarskjöld – Fight for Peace” to the International Film Festival Rotterdam. His journals “Markings,” published posthumously, provided a way in.
“There he was, this powerful man, and yet his writings deal with loneliness and sacrifice. There was a fragile poet inside of a politician.”
With Beta Cinema on board, the film was produced by Patrick Ryborn for Unlimited Stories. Variety premieres the trailer here.
According to Fly, Hammarskjöld was also a man who couldn’t afford to love.
“Dag said: ‘I am not a homosexual.’ Of course he did – otherwise, he would go to jail. One time,...

Hanging on the wall next to a picturesque window view of the White House grounds in Doug Emhoff’s sunlit corner office is a handmade rectangular wood carving with the words, in all caps, “Second Gentleman.”
When the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris and veteran entertainment lawyer took this newly titled role, it was, as he put it, an “open slate.” The election of his wife as the country’s first female VP meant that, for the first time, there would be a male spouse of one of the White House principals.
Almost three years in to this position, Emhoff said that circumstances, more than anything else, have defined what he does. In the past year in particular, he has become a leading voice on antisemitism, adding to a portfolio that has included such other issues as gender equity and mental health.
The role, Emhoff said in an interview with Deadline this week,...

Updated, with complete remarks: President Joe Biden told the crowd at a fundraiser this evening, “You’re the reason that Donald Trump is a former president, or he hates when I say it, a defeated president.”
At the Holmby Hills home of designer Michael Smith and former ambassador James Costos, Biden rallied his donors, many of whom backed him in the last campaign, while turning his focus on his likely 2024 rival. He spent a substantial part of his remarks warning of Trump as a threat to democracy, a contrast that many of the president’s steadfast backers believe will boost support as the 2024 campaign gets in full swing.
“Literally, I believe, the future of democracy is at stake,” Biden said, according to a pool report. “The greatest threat Trump poses is to our democracy, because if we lost that, we lose everything.” Read his complete remarks at the end of the story.

Updated: The White House, President Joe Biden and his presidential campaign are launching accounts on Threads, the Meta rival to Elon Musk’s embattled X/Twitter.
First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff also are launching Threads accounts, along with LACASABlanca. Threads also will see the @joebiden and @kamalaharris campaign accounts.
The launch on Threads has been in the works for several weeks, and there are no plans to change the administration’s usage of X/Twitter, according to a source familiar with the decision. The launch on Threads was a decision made based on its usage, the source said.
But the announcement comes after the White House condemned Musk’s amplification and endorsement of an antisemitic post last week. That was followed by a number of advertisers suspending their spending on X/Twitter, although there also were concerns raised by a Media Matters...

Tennis players usually shake hands after a match as a way to acknowledge each other's efforts and enforce some sort of camaraderie between them.
But most of the time, what happens during a match is something tennis players don't always remain appreciative of each other and they have developed a distaste for actions taken by a fellow pro that they think is not within the spirit of fair play.
Ahead of the 2023 US Open , Atp and Wta stars shared their tennis icks in a short video shared by the tournament's official account on X. Second seed Novak Djokovic says he is 'annoyed' when players grunt. Djokovic adds that grunting causes too much noise, which is hilariously funny considering that he was penalized not long ago for hindrance due to an extended grunt.
Tunisia's Ons Jabeur is not a fan of players clinching fists and being their own personal motivators shouting 'come on'.

Updated with latest attendees, livestream link: President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, will attend Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, underscoring how one of the biggest social nights of the year for Beltway media and politicos has lasted despite predictions of its demise.
The sold-out event at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night also is expected to draw celebrities and other notables, with attendees scheduled to include John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, as well as the Tennessee state lawmakers who were ousted, then reinstated, for their protest over gun violence. Roy Wood Jr., correspondent for The Daily Show, will headline the event. He will follow Biden’s stand-up material — and given the media events of the week, there will be plenty of material.

The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner will draw loads of attention for the celebrities who show, the jokes that Joe Biden tells and the shtick that Roy Wood Jr. uses in his routine.
What often gets lost is the year-round role of the Whca itself, including pressing for access to the president and promoting the First Amendment. This year, there also will be reference to Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal journalist jailed in Russia, and Austin Tice, the freelance reporter kidnapped in Syria in 2012.
Deadline recently talked with Tamara Keith, the NPR White House correspondent who is the president of the Whca this year, about the Biden administration and the press, as well as what she plans to tell the dinner crowd at a time of economic distress in the media business.

John Agar never asked to be a movie star, but when the question is put to you by David O. Selznick, you say yes every damn time.
Born in Chicago and raised in Los Angeles, Agar was a physical training instructor for the U.S. Army Air Corps when, in 1945, he found himself at a glitzy party rubbing shoulders with Hollywood's heaviest hitters, as Shirley Temple's date. Selznick, the legendary producer whose dogged determination brought Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind" to the big screen, was struck by the handsome, twentysomething, 6'1" man on the arm of filmdom's most famous child star, and the filmmaker offered him a five-year contract at 150 a week -- that's twice what the Army was paying him. Though he'd never performed before, he signed on and began taking acting lessons.

If, at the end of your days, you were shown a nifty graph determining the average of all the positive deeds and negative acts you inflicted on others during your life, would you be considered more of a hero or villain?
Pointing his camera along the narrow divide that sometimes exists between the two ends, Ramin Bahrani’s brilliantly inquisitive documentary “2nd Chance” explores the mythos of a self-made tycoon allergic to accountability, but whose proud creation has undeniably saved numerous lives.
This remarkably balanced non-fiction piece takes its multi-layered title from the name of the once prosperous company founded by Richard Davis, the infamous inventor of the modern bulletproof vest. Update, 7 Pm Pt: Gavin Newsom indicated that he would appoint an African American woman to the U.S. Senate if Dianne Feinstein retires.
“We have multiple names in mind, and the answer is yes,” Newsom told Joy Reid as he appeared The ReidOut.
Feinstein has not said that she is retiring, but Newsom had been under some pressure to fill Kamala Harris’ Senate seat with an African American woman after Harris was elected vice president. Instead, he appointed California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, who became the state’s first Latino senator.
Earlier in the day, Newsom launched a counter campaign to the recall effort and, in addition to the MSNBC appearance, will guest on ABC’s The View on Tuesday.
Newsom said of the recall campaign, “This one is serious, and it’s serious for many different reasons. It’s the uncertainty of being on the ballot with the question up or down,...

The dark side of stand-up comedy is always lurking behind the jokes, and “I’m Dying Up Here,” Showtime’s drama series set in Los Angeles’ ’70s comedy scene, aims to bring it to light. Tracking a group of comedians working a club on the Sunset Strip, the first episode slowly teases a tragedy meant to bring everyone together – even if the premiere feels unwieldy prior to the introduction of every member of this large ensemble.
An hour-long drama about the lives of comedians feels a tad antithetical even before you start counting expendable plot lines, but “I’m Dying Up Here” only exacerbates the fixable issues seen in the pilot.
What works best among the many ingredients at play is first how producer Jim Carrey and showrunner David Flebotte highlight the serious side of a world made to look lighthearted. Second, and more simply, is Ari Graynor as Cassie,...
