Hunter Schafer learns that not all European getaways are particularly relaxing in the first trailer for horror flick Cuckoo.
Neon releases Tilman Singer’s feature in theaters Aug. 9. Cuckoo stars Schafer as Gretchen, a teen who gets more than she bargained for after accepting a job from Herr König (Dan Stevens) at a resort in the German Alps. Rounding out the cast are Jessica Henwick, Jan Bluthardt, Marton Csokas, Greta Fernández and Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey.
“How would you like to come work for me at the resort?” Stevens asks in the trailer. Later, Schafer wants to know, “Why did you bring us here?”
Singer (Luz) wrote and directed the movie that premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and also screened at SXSW. Thor Bradwell, Markus Halberschmidt, Ken Kao, Ben Rimmer, Josh Rosenbaum and Maria Tsigka serve as producers.

“Euphoria” breakout Hunter Schafer is playing yet another teen trying to outrun her familial drama, except this time, it’s a surreal matter of life or death. Schafer leads “Cuckoo,” written and directed by “Luz” filmmaker Tilman Singer.
Six years after Singer’s 2018 feature debut, “Cuckoo” centers on 17-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) who is forced to leave her American home to live with her father (Márton Csókás) in a resort in the German Alps with his new wife (Jessica Henwick) and family. Yet it’s her father’s boss Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens) and his obsession with Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma (Mila Lieu) that unlocks a larger, more sinister presence at the resort. Gretchen becomes haunted by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family. Jan Bluthardt and Greta Fernandez also star in the horror film.

Hunter Schafer was among one of the standout performers in HBO’s hit series Euphoria. Among other rising actresses like Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney, she managed to hold her own in her acting debut with her role as Jules Vaughn. The show mirrored her own experiences as a trans woman and fans were impressed with the ease with which she essayed her role.

Another standout from the series was Angus Cloud who sadly passed away last year. Schafer recently reflected on Angus’ contribution to the show and the type of person he was in real life. Schafer had nothing but kind words to say about the late actor who left a special mark on the entire cast of Euphoria.

Hunter Schafer is a very good actress. This probably won’t be news to anyone who watched even the first episode of Euphoria, where her aching vulnerability seemed to swallow the scenery whole. Fresh from appearing in the latest Hunger Games, the actress takes her first leading role in Cuckoo, a supernatural horror that doesn’t feel pushed to explain itself, offering a fun mashup of older, less-well-heeled filmmaking tropes. There is a nicely hammy turn from Dan Stevens and one finely tuned homage, but in Schafer it holds an ace: nailing the physical comedy and stretching her emotive face to the limit, the film is all hers.
In Cuckoo, Schafer stars as Gretchen, a teenager who is joining her father Luis (Marton Csokas) as he moves to a resort in the German Alps with his new wife Trixie (Greta Fernández) and daughter Alma (Mila Lieu). Upon arrival they meet Luis’ boss Mr König,...

The first shot after the opening titles of Tilman Singer’s savvily conceived but undercooked Cuckoo is like a reverse angle of the opening shot of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Here, a family drives through beautiful but implicitly foreboding mountainous terrain. And we’re located in the cab of the car with Gretchen (Hunter Schafer), an angsty teen who’s been forced to relocate from her home in the U.S. to a relatively remote corner of the Bavarian Alps.
Steep, imposingly snow-capped, and dotted with romantic castles and high-end ski lodges, the Bavarian Alps are tourist magnets, and justifiably so. But this part of Germany was also a favorite of Hitler’s, and today it’s the heart of traditional conservativism in the country. Like Appalachia in the U.S., it’s a place a horror movie might take us to in search of scary people—except here...

Ornithologists will no doubt roll their eyes and scoff, “Who doesn’t know that?” But it was news to me that cuckoos, aside from inspiring those infernal kitsch clocks you want to smash once an hour, are also what’s known as brood parasites. That means they’re either too busy or too lazy or too evil to raise their own young, so they drop their eggs in the nests of other birds and let them do the parenting instead. Respect. German writer-director Tilman Singer folds that fascinating nugget of bird arcana into a reproductive horror scenario that’s more strange than coherent in his second feature, naturally titled Cuckoo.
There’s more than the seed of an entertainingly trippy freakout here, applying the peculiar breeding habits of the cuckoo to the demented plan of a self-described preservationist, bent on somehow or other building an assembly line of enhanced propagation using young “nestlings.

Everyone knows that hotels — preferably isolated, ideally with very few guests — make the best settings for horror films. All that sad anonymity, all that provisional space ready to be filled with something really nasty. In Cuckoo, Alpenplatz, run by the excessively friendly Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens) totally fits the bill.
You never get a clear idea of its geography, apart from an enormous foyer fronted by a sort of supermarket where the odd, disoriented guest wanders in to vomit into the freezer unit. “Oh yes, that happens sometimes,” says the flirty receptionist Trixie (Greta Fernandez), who apparently has just stepped out of one of Brigitte Bardot’s lesser movies. There also are some bungalows — how close to the main building is not clear either — including one painted pink that Konig calls “the love nest.” In horror, that has to be a bad sign.
So a hotel is a good start.

Spanish mini-major Filmax has picked up international sales rights to “Teresa,” the new feature by Paula Ortiz, a fictional story turning on the prominent Spanish mystic and religious reformer Saint Teresa of Jesus.
“Teresa” marks the big screen adaptation of Spaniard playwright Juan Mayorga’s stage play ”La lengua en pedazos,” which narrates a meeting between Saint Teresa of Jesus – also known as Teresa de Ávila – and a character called The Inquisitor.
The feature is not a classic biopic, but rather a free adaptation of the text written by Mayorga – a winner of Spain’s National Prize for Dramatic Literature – which in turn, is based on “The Book of Life,” by Saint Teresa herself.
In the movie, Teresa patiently awaits the Inquisitor’s arrival and judgement. His visit and his words will determine her future. They will hold a religious and dialectical duel, where the question will be if she is set free,...

Few feature debuts at Malaga are more awaited than “Unicorns,” which world premieres on March 15, sold by Filmax. It is directed by multi award winning Àlex Lora best known for his work in documentary having won Gaudis, Emmys, and a nomination for a Goya with 2017’s “The Fourth Kingdom,”.
His feature debut gives us Isa played by Greta Fernandez. She is a hedonist, full of touch and feeling, lust and cool. Meanwhile, her mother is focussed on her novel writing, her boyfriend his wine shop, and her boss his marketing agency’s success.

Filmax has swooped in on one of Spain’s most awaited fiction feature debuts of 2022, Alex Lora’s “Unicorns” (“Unicornios”). Pic is produced by Inicia Films’ Valerie Delpierre, producer of director Carla Simon’s debut, “Summer 1993.”
Due to be completed by the fall, “Unicorns” is made with Valencia’s Jaibo, the shingle behind Chema García’s Locarno hit “The Sacred Spirit.” Filmax will screen a first promo at this week’s Cannes Film Market.
New York-based, and an alum of the City College of New York, where he was mentored by Chantal Akerman, Lora has carved out an exceptional documentary career, finding humanity in the most unlikely of subjects, often supposed outsiders or outcasts, and of places, such as a Brooklyn recycling center in 2017’s doc feature “The Fourth Kingdom, The Kingdom of Plastics.”
In “Unicorns,” by contrast, Isa, the protagonist, has it all. She is intelligent, beautiful, young and spontaneous.

Palme d’Or winning producer Luis Miñarro (“Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives”) is set to direct his fifth feature, ”Impalpable” (a working title), produced by Miñarro’s label, Barcelona-based Eddie Saeta, one of Spain’s most prominent arthouse shingles.

The actress is toplining this road movie together with Arturo Dueñas, who is also directing; the film was shot in Spain and Cuba, and is in the middle of post-production. Actress Greta Fernández is on a hot streak in Spain: after performing next to her father – Eduard Fernández – in A Thief’s Daughter, she scooped the Best Actress Award for said movie at the most recent San Sebastián Film Festival and has not ceased to garner praise since then. In addition, she has emerged as one of the bookies’ favourites for the awards season that kicks off this Saturday 11 January with the presentation of the Forqué Awards in Madrid, where, naturally, she is a hopeful for the gong in the Best Actress category. “Pain and Glory” garnered 16 nominations,” “While at War” 17 and “The Endless Trench” 15.
Though most pundits would put “Pain and Glory” as the frontrunner, the outcome is difficult to predict. World-premiering in Spain before competing in Cannes, where Antonio Banderas won the best actor prize, “Pain and Glory” was reckoned by Spanish critics to be Almodóvar’s best film in a decade.
But ever since the screenplay for Luis Buñuel’s “Viridiana,” which went on to win the Palme d’Or, was written off in Spain as nonsense, the Spanish industry has steadfastly refused to kowtow to internationally acclaimed directors or indeed talent.

The surprise hit of this year’s edition has scooped three awards, while Proxima, The Endless Trench, Greta Fernández and Nina Hoss also shone bright on the winners’ list. The different films featuring in the winners’ list of the Official Section of the 67th San Sebastián Film Festival can be counted on a single hand. The surprise victor of this year’s edition, Brazil’s Pacified by Us director Paxton Winters, a movie that was admittedly not one of the most eagerly awaited in this section, has ended up taking home the Golden Shell and two additional prizes to boot: the Silver Shell for Best Actor for Bukassa Kabengele and the Jury Prize for Best Cinematography for Laura Merians. “These awards are very important for us and for Brazilian cinema,” declared the director as he accepted his trophy on stage, although, just as surprisingly, he neglected to mention how difficult the situation is.
