Starz has acquired a slew of comedy series, specials and films that launched on Seeso, the NBCUniversal-owned Svod service that shuttered last year.
Among the series in the deal are Take My Wife, Night Train with Wyatt Cenac and The Ucb Show. It also includes stand-up specials from the Sklar Brothers, Brian Posehn and Lachlan Patterson, along with The Pistol Shrimps, the documentary about a group of showbiz folks including Aubrey Plaza who play in a women’s recreational basketball league in L.A.
“We are excited to address the uncertain fate of several Seeso series, including the beloved Take My Wife series, by providing a new home for these programs and their fans at Starz,” said C. Brett Marottoli, Head of Program Acquisitions for Starz. “These comedies align strategically with many Starz Original series and will appeal to our audiences as we continue featuring more diverse casts and storylines across the Starz platforms.

Seinfeld, a show about a stand-up comic and his friends, is one of the most successful sitcoms in television history. Will Mulaney on Fox be a big ratings success as well? Will it run for years and years? Cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
Mulaney follows a rising stand-up comic John Mulaney (Mulaney) who's trying to take his career to the next level. He's both helped and hindered by his friends and mentors. The rest of the cast includes Martin Short, Nasim Pedrad, Seaton Smith, Zack Pearlman, and Elliott Gould.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- typically the following morning, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to...

Good news and bad news for the fans of Fox's new Mulaney sitcom. On the downside, the network has cut the first season order, from 16 to 13 installments. On the positive side, they haven't cancelled it -- yet.

It can't be ignored that "Mulaney" premiered last Sunday night on Fox and the ratings weren't especially good. I got on the phone with creator-star John Mulaney on Thursday and made a promise up-front: I'd lead with quick ratings discussion and then never return to the topic and we stuck to it. The bottom line on that subject: Fox is 100 percent behind "Mulaney" and the network knows things will turn around. And what else would anyone say after one week? Mostly, we discussed the learning process on "Mulaney," which was originally developed at NBC, moved over to Fox and which is already far deeper into production than most freshman shows. This week, in fact, found "Mulaney" working on its 13th episode, while Mulaney was also, at least according to Twitter, parlaying with old chum Bill Hader in advance of Hader's "SNL" hosting stint, so it's impressive both that he found time to chat all,...

Before we discuss John Mulaney, the fictional protagonist of Fox’s new comedy Mulaney, allow me to confess something about John Mulaney, the real-life comedian: I am a huge fan of his pre-sitcom work.
Ever since I saw him do a bit about Girl Scout cookies on Saturday Night Live — back when he wrote for the show and introduced us to Stefon, the gift that keeps on giving — I was hooked. I know his stand-up specials backwards and forwards (and regularly quote them). Needless to say, I was thrilled when Mulaney finally landed his own sitcom.

Former Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney's maiden voyage into the sitcom world took quite a beating even before Sunday night's premiere. The idea was sound: Mulaney's stand-up demeanor reminds more than a few observers of Jerry Seinfeld (who had a big TV show once upon a time), and Mulaney himself has often referenced how influenced and inspired he was by The Cosby Show. The comic was also one of the brains behind Bill Hader's character Stefon, one of the best recurring characters in SNL's history. Why wouldn't NBC assume that Mulaney would be a slam dunk?...

John Mulaney is a very funny stand-up comedian whose material I have delighted in for many years. I hope the shortcomings of Mulaney don't ruin his chances of having a better, funnier show in the future, because as things stand now, Mulaney is not a show I can root for. Maybe next time. The pilot has a weird, sour attitude about women, including an opening stand-up bit adapted from a story on Mulaney's 2009 album about the comedian accidentally chasing a woman in the subway. Except the original is incisive and confessional and self-aware, while the sitcom version makes it seem like "Mulaney" doesn't care about how terrifying it is to be chased. SNL's Nasim Pedrad plays one of Mulaney's roommates, and she decries sexist double-standards while also being a cookie-cutter "crazy ex-girlfriend" (and a straight-up, should-have-a-restraining-order-against-her stalker). Seaton Smith plays Motif, Mulaney's other roommate and a...

A lot of very smart and funny people who work in the TV comedy business are rooting for Fox's "Mulaney" to succeed for two reasons: 1)Star and creator John Mulaney is both a terrific stand-up comic and writer (at "SNL," he was responsible for making Bill Hader crack up at least once during every Stefon appearance); and 2)This gifted comedian and writer is concentrating his energy on making a traditional multi-camera sitcom, shot on a stage in front of a live audience — a format no one but CBS succeeds with anymore, even though many of us still have fond memories of "Cheers," "The Cosby Show," "Friends" and, yes, "Seinfeld," which is the inescapable structural model for "Mulaney." Comedy people want John Mulaney to succeed, and they want "Mulaney" to prove that someone other than Chuck Lorre can still make a good and popular multi-cam show. For many of the same reasons,...

“Chappelle's Show” co-creator Neal Brennan says he'd be willing to kick in to have police officers wear cameras to make sure they don't shoot people without cause. The subject came up during Brennan's latest “Champs” podcast with fellow comedian Moshe Kasher and guest Seaton Smith, one of the stars of Fox's “Mulaney.” Also read: ‘Approval Matrix’ Host Neal Brennan on Twitter Scolds, Reparations and the W-Word One of the proposals to emerge from the Ferguson, Mo. protests over the police shooting of unarmed black teen Michael Brown was one to outfit all police officers with small cameras that could monitor their interactions.

When Ryan Seacrest kicks off the upfronts by welcoming Pitbull to the stage with his entourage of booty-dancers, you know that Fox isn’t catering to your mom. (Unless your mom is one of Pitbull’s booty-dancers, in which case, lucky you!) So it’s no surprise that Kevin Reilly, Fox’s chairman of entertainment, followed Pitbull’s performance with the announcement that Fox is branding itself as “America’s Next Generation Network,” focusing on a youthful audience. That might also explain why Andy Samberg was there, making some decent quips for the benefit of his fellow Next Generation Americans — and a few self-aware advertisers,...

Fox has faith in John Mulaney.
The network has its extended its order for Mulaney, the sitcom starring the Saturday Night Live writer, from 6 episodes to 16. The comedian tweeted about the news early Wednesday morning:
Fox made this a great night by picking up my show “Mulaney” for 10 more episodes. I am thrilled. Sincerely. Call me with any questions.
— John Mulaney (@mulaney) May 7, 2014
Mulaney was originally developed by NBC — but the network chose not to move forward with the project, despite SNL head Lorne Michaels serving as executive producer. Fox salvaged the pilot, which introduces Mulaney as an aspiring comic living in NYC.
