Gaumont has added French-language action feature The Orphans starring Dali Benssalah, Alban Lenoir, Anouk Grinberg and Sonia Faidi, to its Cannes slate.
The film is the first feature from Olivier Schneider who has worked as stunt coordinator on films including No Time To Die, Spectre, Taken and Fast and Furious X. It is about a cop and a mob fixer who team up to search for the killer of a former friend from their orphanage. Producers are Inoxy Films and Gaumont.
“Our ambition is to rehabilitate the French action movie and bring it back to cinemas,” said Alexis Cassanet, Gaumont’s head of international sales.

Quentin Dupieux's Yannick is now showing exclusively on Mubi from April 5, 2024.Yannick.Ever since he dogged a sentient tire on a killing spree in Rubber (2010), musician-turned-filmmaker Quentin Dupieux has been distilling a singular form of gonzo. The films he’s crafted—a body of work swelling at the speed of Hong Sang-soo, with six features released since 2019—all belie their modest means. Rarely stretching longer than eighty minutes, they’ve followed a number of deranged characters, which have recently included a man reprogrammed as a killing machine by his leather jacket; a pig-sized fly and the two bums who try to make a pet out of it; a gang of Power Rangers–type avengers armed with tobacco smoke’s chemical constituents, and a middle-aged couple who discovers a time-travel portal in their basement. Dupieux—who routinely writes, shoots, directs, and edits his own films—likes to work with a...

Mayim Bialik Presses Forward
While Mayim Bialik holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, somehow, the hosting job at Jeopardy! wasn’t the perfect fit everyone imagined. At this time, she has plenty of opportunities with her new major gig to keep her busy.

French filmmaker Quentin Dupieux has been creating some pretty surreal masterpieces over the years, including Deerskin, in which Jean Dujardin’s Georges is obsessed with the tasselled loveliness of a suede jacket, and the utterly bonkers and highly entertaining Mandibles, in which two jokers find a giant fly which they hope will make them their fortune. So it was just a matter of time before this master of madness should focus his attention on the grand master of Surrealism, Salvador Dalí, the two coming together in the perfect storm that is Daaaaaali!
The film takes place in the 1980s and follows journalist Judith (Anaïs Demoustier) as she tries to pin down the artist and get an interview out of him for her documentary. Much of the film takes place in the hotel where said interview is to take place and the scenes in the hotel corridor are a joy to behold.

Time to meet Dali! Diaphana Distribution in France has revealed a teaser trailer for the acclaimed new film from France's wacky Quentin Dupieux titled Daaaaaali!. Quite simple, this brilliantly hilarious comedy is a wild and kooky take on the artist Salvador Dalí. It premiered a the 2023 Venice Film Festival this fall to uproarious laughter and great reviews - it was one of my favorite films of the festival. Dupieux's film is sort of about a young journalist who attempts to meet with the iconic surrealist artist Salvador Dalí on several occasions for a documentary project. But it never seems to work out. This teaser gives an early look at some of the various actors playing Dali. Starring Anaïs Demoustier, Gilles Lellouche, Edouard Baer, Pio Marmaï, Romain Duris, and Jonathan Cohen. "As Dalí himself said, his personality was probably his greatest masterpiece. My film modestly tells that story," Dupieux explains. I loooove this film,...

Mayim Bialik is looking to Joe Rogan for a little podcasting inspiration.
The actress and Jeopardy! co-host recently spoke to Vanity Fair about how her mental health podcast, Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown, has developed since launching in January 2021 amid people’s anxieties around the Covid-19 pandemic.
While discussing her own stances on the link between mental and physical health, getting actors to open up about deeply personal topics, and her strategies around working with her longtime partner Jonathan Cohen, Bialik shared her approach to interviewing guests. It’s a style that takes inspiration from a seemingly unlikely place: Joe Rogan.
“Joe Rogan’s had tremendous success, and while I don’t emulate everything he does, his style inspires me,” she said. “I’m just generally fascinated by people: Where did they come from? How did they become the way they are? There’s almost always something in someone’s family — drama,...

Prime Video and Gaumont (“Intouchables”) are teaming up on an uplifting mother-son drama tackling disability, directed by Ken Scott (“Starbuck”), and starring French actors Leïla Bekhti (“All Your Faces”) and Jonathan Cohen (“Sentinelle”). Scott penned and will be directing the film which is titled “Ma mère, Dieu et Sylvie Vartan” and is based on Roland Perez’s novel by the same name.
The project is the first theatrical film that Amazon Prime Video is co-financing as part of the French decree that kicked off in July 2021 and stems from the implementation of the European Commission’s legislation called Audiovisual Media Services Directive (Avms). As such, Gaumont will release the film theatrically in France and holds all distribution rights in France and internationally (outside of Canada). “Ma mère, Dieu et Sylvie Vartan” will roll out on Prime Video 17 months after its theatrical release under France’s windowing rules.

The idea that somehow an idiot of a man became someone to watch out for is not very new. It’s the way Sentinelle, directed by Hugo Benamozig and David Caviglioli, so unabashedly deals with this idea with the snappy dialogue that makes Sentinelle an outstanding comedy. There is just no inhibition here. That doesn’t mean the film derails and goes into foolish territory. Now, the whole film is, in a way, foolish, but it’s well intentionally foolish. The film that the makers are trying to make wouldn’t have worked if it ever tried to be something more than what it actually is. The character of Sentinelle has such flavor that he can be a primary character in so many sequels based around his misadventures.
Captain François Sentinelle is an imbecile of the highest order. He couldn’t solve a case if his life depended on it,...

Salvador Dalí is walking down a hotel corridor. A hotel corridor is being walked down by Salvador Dalí. In a hotel, there is a corridor down which Salvador Dalí walks. So begins — and begins and begins – Quentin Dupieux’s giddy, glitchy altogether delightful “Daaaaaali!” (imagine the title delivered by a practiced yodeler in the middle of a morning gargle). It’s the oldest and lo-fi-est of cinematic tricks: a few simple cuts make it seem like a hotel hallway’s finite, solid space is elastic, stretching from the lift doors into carpeted absurdity. Like the film as a whole, the gag gets funnier as it gets sillier, and becomes more of a homage to the surrealist painter’s ability to warp the reality around him, the more drunken its time-loop chronology.
“A story should have a beginning, a middle and an end, but not necessarily in that order,” said Godard,...

Like writers penning their memoirs, making movies about making movies is a rite of passage for many a director. Fellini famously did it with 8 ½, Truffaut with Day for Night, Godard with Contempt and Fassbinder with Beware of a Holy Whore. More recently, Tarantino gave us Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Spielberg The Fabelmans, Michel Hazavanicius made Final Cut and Damien Chazelle, Babylon.
Almost all behind-the-scenes movies share the same theme: Filmmaking is tough, high-stress work that weighs heavily on everyone involved, especially the directors themselves. That’s certainly one of the main takeaways from Cédric Kahn’s very French variation on the subject, Making Of, which premiered out of competition in Venice.
Kahn is both an actor (he played the douchey Gallic lover in Pawel Pawikowski’s Cold War) and talented director, with a series of strong features under his belt that include hard-hitting thrillers like L’Ennui,...

While unveiling its slate of new French originals and acquisitions on Monday, Prime Video announced that it would skip a French theatrical release for “Challengers,” Luca Guadagnino’s anticipated tennis drama. The film, which stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and “West Side Story” star Mike Faist, will still be released in theaters in all other territories.
During a posh press event hosted at the Pavillon Royal on the outskirts of Paris, Brigitte Ricou-Bellan, Prime Video’s country managing director for France, said the strategic move by the Amazon streamer resulted from France’s notoriously strict windowing rules, which demands streamers to wait 15 to 17 months after a theatrical roll out before making a new film available on their services. The rule has led other studios to opt to skip French cinemas for new releases before, such as Disney’s decision to debut “Strange World” on streaming.

Foo Fighters experienced tragic losses: in March of 2022 drummer Taylor Hawkins died suddenly at the age of 50, and then lead singer Dave Grohl‘s mother died in August. But the band continued making music, and on June 2, 2023, they released their 11th studio album — but their first without Hawkins. “But Here We Are” may just be their crowning achievement, if the reviews are any indication.
As of this writing “But Here We Are” has a MetaCritic score of 90 based on 12 reviews counted thus far. If that number holds up this will be their best reviewed album by far in the MetaCritic era. Three of those reviews rate the album a perfect 100 out of 100. Neil McCormick (The Telegraph) says, “Loss and grief lie at the core of the Foo Fighters’ most succinct and intense album.” It “pushes right through bewilderment and sadness until it comes out the other side, defiantly alive.” Ali Shutler (NME) adds,...

Told from the perspective of a family, Apathy follows the parents as they struggle in their daily lives and gives a voice to the children. The multi-territory co-production is produced by France’s...

The blockbuster French cast of Amazon Prime Video’s third season of “Lol: Qui rit, qui sort” speaks volumes about the Japanese variety format’s tremendous popularity in France.
The Amazon Original series, adapted from the format “Lol: Last One Laughing,” scored its biggest launch to date on Prime Video in France since bowing on March 10. The show is one of the streamer’s first unscripted originals in France and has been a major coup as a brand exercise that’s succeeded with limited resources — certainly in comparison to scripted comedy. Adaptations of “Lol” have also thrived in Italy and Germany where they have ranked as the most watched local titles on the service, respectively. Local versions are also available in Spain, Canada, Mexico and Australia (hosted by Rebel Wilson).

Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, the French filmmaking duo best known for their smash hit comedy “Intouchables,” are wrapping up their eighth feature, “A Difficult Year,” which Gaumont teased to buyers at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous last week. The topical comedy is bolstered by an ensemble cast including Jonathan Cohen, Pio Marmaï, Noémie Merlant and Mathieu Amalric. “A Difficult Year” reteams Toledano and Nakache with their longtime producers at Quad Films. The pair also co-produced through their banner Ten Cinema, alongside Gaumont.
Highlighting growing contradictions within our society, “A Difficult Year” follows two compulsive spenders, Albert and Bruno, who are in debt up to their necks. While seeking help from community workers to get their lives back on track, Albert and Bruno run into a group of young green activists. Lured by the free beer and snacks rather than by the ideals of these eco-activists, Albert and Bruno find themselves joining the movement without much conviction.

Daaaaaali !
A true original who never seems to be running out of zany ideas, we learned back in November that Quentin Dupieux was at it again. Featuring Alain Chabat, Anaïs Demoustier, Pierre Niney, Gilles Lellouche, Edouard Baer, Pio Marmaï, Jonathan Cohen, Hakim Jemili, Agnès Hurstel, Jérôme Niel, Marc Fraize and Didier Flamand, Dupieux’s twelve feature sounds Zelig-esque in scope. Dianna Agron (“Shiva Baby”) stars as Abigail, a newly-divorced mother of two screaming children. The people in Abigail’s life don’t walk all over her; they practically stampede. Her ex-husband barges in unannounced and refuses to take his junk out of the house. Her mother Barbara (Candice Bergen) has borderline personality disorder, and their relationship is aggravating and fraught. Only five months old, Zack Snyder’s zombie heist thriller and Netflix hit “Army of the Dead” has already inspired its own cinematic resurrections. Franchise plans include more films, as well as TV series, proving it’s never too early to bring some of its brightest stars back from the dead. Set six years before “Army of the Dead,” : more zippy heist action and the winsome charm of “Dead” safecracker Ludwig Dieter (Schweighöfer himself).
First things first: This iteration of Dieter is a bit different than the one German actor and director Schweighöfer presented in Snyder’s film. He’s still a natty dresser, a chatty conversationalist, and a damn good safecracker, but “Army of Thieves” picks up just before he turned those skills toward a life of crime. Oh, and his name is actually Sebastian, another twist that Snyder and Shay Hatten’s screenplay happily explains away over its protracted 127-minute running time.

While France has a deeply entrenched cinema tradition, drama series have been gaining tremendous ground within the country’s cultural landscape within the past few years, with some of the country’s biggest producers, stars and filmmakers venturing into ambitious television projects. The 3-month-old merger of UniFrance and TV France Intl., the country’s film and audiovisual promotion organizations, into a single entity is probably the best illustration of this blended world.
The growing presence of global streaming services, especially Netflix, in the TV space has played a key role in bolstering a talent drain, catapulting French stars, such as Omar Sy with the Gaumont-produced show “Lupin,” to international recognition. Although Sy broke through a decade ago with the smash hit French comedy “Intouchables,” “Lupin” allowed him to reach many more viewers around the world. He’s the director and star of “Army of Thieves,” the set-up film to Zack Snyder’s wildly popular zombie movie. He is hired by a mysterious woman to pull off a heist with the help of a misfit crew of aspiring thieves. In addition to Schweighöfer, this also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Clad in a scarlet suit, Isabelle Huppert approaches a mirror in the opening scene of “White as Snow,” director Anne Fontaine’s modern-day retelling of the Brothers Grimm’s tale “Snow White.” Playing widowed hotel owner Maud, the French star — as ravishing a screen presence as ever — studies her face, searching for the inevitable imperfections of maturity.
That unspoken concern with age is negatively reinforced in the company of her stepdaughter, quiet ingénue Claire. Little is said about the women’s relationship before the passing of Claire’s father, but in the present, the older woman worries that Claire’s amicable temperament and unaffected beauty have bewitched Maud’s current lover. The film’s major downfall resides in the lackluster central conflict, limited to a one-sided fit of jealousy.
Early on, Fontaine deploys an enchanting fairytale score from Bruno Coulais (“Wolfwalkers”) to ease us into the slightly heightened tone of the piece.
