In June 2019, the gender-parity industry coalition ReFrame unveiled Rise, its two-year program to support the continuation of mid-level female directors’ careers. After a slight pandemic-affected delay, ReFrame Rise has now returned with its second cohort, which expands to include cinematographers.
Each woman will be matched with a career coach and a team of industry professionals to sponsor them (a relationship that involves a more committed level of participation than mentorship).
“We have learned firsthand the value of the sponsorship opportunity for women artists and look forward to supporting this next group as they level up and find sustainability in their careers,” Sundance Institute founding senior director of Artist Programs and ReFrame Leadership Council member Michelle Satter said in a statement. Kamala Khan is a superhero fan with an imagination, particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel; Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home, that is until she gets superpowers like the heroes she’s looked up to.
Even though the wildly popular Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is full of comedy, heart, and emotion, one thing it is severely lacking in is more coming-of-age-style stories. Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming was really the closest thing we ever got to a coming-of-age MCU film, and boy did it ever work.

As Disney+ releases the six episodes of "Ms. Marvel" this summer, Popsugar has exclusive interviews with the cast and creators about making the show come to life. This week, director Meera Menon chats with Popsugar about episode three, "Destined."
There was something that director Meera Menon was certain she wanted in "Ms. Marvel" episode three: songs from Bon Jovi. The episode centers around Kamala (Iman Vellani) dealing with the wedding of her brother Aamir (Saagar Shaikh) to his fiancée Tyesha (Travina Springer). The event has two huge set pieces: a choreographed dance that most of the attendees lovingly perform for the newlyweds and Kamala's first big fight set, incredibly, to Bon Jovi's biggest hit, "Livin' on a Prayer."
"What I love about the show is that it's this mashup of normal teen drama stuff and superhero stuff."
The idea for a Bon Jovi moment came right from the script, which...

Ms. Marvel couldn’t be more different than Meera Menon’s last Marvel experience on The Punisher, but the story of Kamala Khan certainly strikes a deeper chord in the filmmaker. Similar to Kamala, Menon was raised by South Asian immigrants in New Jersey, so she relished the opportunity to help tell a story that she longed for during her own childhood. The Indian American filmmaker, who directs Ms. Marvel’s second and third episodes, made it clear to Marvel Studios from the get-go that this project was especially personal to her.
“I just wanted to be a part of it in any way, so I let [Marvel Studios] know right off the bat that it meant a lot to me to see that form of representation. It was seeing something akin to my sense of my own upbringing, and it just felt so meaningful...

Ms. Marvel Director Meera Menon Discusses Glow Comparisons, Dialogue Vs Action, And More [Interview]
For as much as big-name film directors get the spotlight, the most successful television directors around have quietly established themselves as the jack-of-all-trades of the industry. Oftentimes working on just one or two episodes of a given show before moving on to the next one, the entire process exercises vastly different storytelling muscles than what their big-screen counterparts may be used to. It takes a special talent to quickly adapt on the fly to the overall style and structure of a given series, melding one's own unique strengths to the narrative demands of a particular story ... only to briskly move...

Even superheroes have to pass their driver’s ed classes, and nobody in the Marvel Cinematic Universe feels that more than “Ms. Marvel” herself, Kamala Khan.
Played by 19-year-old Iman Vellani, Kamala learns how to control her mysterious, energy-projection powers while balancing the challenges of high school guidance counselors and traditional parents who won’t let her stay out too late. If that sounds like a cross between a typical Marvel movie and a coming-of-age John Hughes movie, that was exactly the plan.
“All the John Hughes movies, like ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day,’ are obviously a reference,” director Adil El Arbi told Variety. “The TV show ‘Parker Lewis Can’t Lose,’ which is based on the John Hughes movies, Tom Holland’s ‘Spider-Man’ movies, all the American high-school TV shows, like ‘Saved by the Bell,’ ‘Boy Meets World.’ We tried to convey that style.”

When Iman Vellani booked the role of Kamala Khan — the Pakistani American teen superhero also known as Ms. Marvel — it was the first acting gig for the 19-year-old newcomer. But in assuming the mantle, Vellani also took on the responsibility of playing the first titular Muslim superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“I’m honestly so privileged that Marvel trusts me to bring a character like Kamala to life,” Vellani tells Variety. At the same time, she says, “There’s so much weight that comes with being the first of anything.”
The advice she received from Marvel leadership was simply to be herself. “They’re like, ‘You don’t go to work thinking that you’re the first Muslim superhero; you just go to work and have fun,’” Vellani recalls.
“That’s what I keep telling myself: I don’t really have to go out of my way and advocate for Muslim and Pakistani representation,...

Marvel’s first Muslim-American teenage superhero is here.
The first two episodes of “Ms. Marvel” dropped on Disney+ on Wednesday June 8 and it’s already bound to be as successful as the platform’s growing slate of original series such as “WandaVision” and “Loki.”
Created by Bisha K. Ali, the series follows 16 year-old Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) who spends her days creating Avengers fan fiction and playing video games in Jersey City. But everything changes when she gains superpowers of her own.
In addition to Vellani, who makes her TV debut with this role, the series also stars Matt Lintz as her tech-savvy best friend Bruno; Yasmeen Fletcher as another friend Nakia; Saagar Shaikh as her brother; and Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur as her mom and dad, respectively.

It’s wild to realize while watching “Ms. Marvel” that the studio’s newest heroine would have been about 2 years old in 2008, the year “Iron Man” kick-started Marvel’s sprawling cinematic universe as we know it. Like the comic books that inspired it, the on-screen MCU has officially become old enough to spawn a literal new generation of superheroes who grew up watching the Avengers shoot through time and space and back again to stop the bad guys. Now, some 15 years later, they’re getting their own shows to do the same.

“Ms. Marvel” is only the second Marvel Disney+ series to drop in 2022 and already it feels like a 180 degree heel-turn from the last one, “Moon Knight.” Where Oscar Isaac’s Mark Spector was moody and dark with barely any connection to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Ms. Marvel’s” main character Kamala Khan, played by the delightful Iman Vellani, is a bright, funny Avengers fangirl whose powers literally sparkle.
Ever since Kamala punched her way into comics in 2013 with her “embiggened” fist, the Pakistani-American teen has been one of the most popular original Marvel characters. Disney+ series “Ms. Marvel” is set to electrify the big screen in Pakistan. The Marvel Studios series will have a theatrical release in Pakistan through a new initiative by licensee company Hkc Entertainment.
Disney+ currently does not stream direct-to-consumer in the nation, and since “Ms. Marvel” is centered on a Muslim-Pakistani teen — making her Marvel Studios’ first Muslim superhero lead — the decision to host a special theatrical event was a no-brainer for Hkc Entertainment CEO Hammad Chaudhry. The Eid-ul-Fitr holidays are also a cinema-going surge for Pakistani residents.
“The series is a wonderful celebration of Pakistani art, culture and talent as there is such a diverse engagement of Pakistani creatives across the board,” Chaudhry said, as reported by Variety. “We couldn’t have asked for a better Eid gift than this huge announcement.”

Marvel Studios’ new original series “Ms. Marvel” is to be given a unique theatrical release next month in Pakistan. The initiative is pioneered through licensee company Hkc Entertainment.
The decision to give the series a theatrical outing reflects several factors, including the show’s status as the first Marvel series to star a Muslim teen superhero as well as the omission of Pakistan in Walt Disney’s rollout of direct-to-consumer streaming platform Disney+. Other factors include the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays as a cinema-going peak and the underlying growth of the country’s cinema market, where “Spider-Man: No Way Home recently earned some 1.75 million from just 53 venues.
“Ms. Marvel” will be available on the Disney+ streaming service starting June 8, 2022. It will debut in Pakistani cinemas on June 16 with episodes 1 and 2 combined into a feature-length presentation. Amazon Studios has renewed Gloria Calderón-Kellett‘s romantic comedy series With Love for a second season.
Season 1 followed the lives of the Diaz siblings, Lily (Emeraude Toubia) and Jorge Jr. (Mark Indelicato), across various holidays throughout the year as they search for love.
Cancellations/Renewals Scorecard: TV Shows Ended Or Continuing In 2021-22 Season
Along the way, viewers become intimately acquainted with the Diazes’ loved ones, with who they share their lives — the good and the bad.
The season ends on a cliffhanger: It’s Noche Buena and an engagement is imminent, but which couple will walk down the aisle?
Suspects include Lily and Santiago (Rome Flynn), the least likely of the three couples to be taking their relationship to the next level since they’d only recently reconciled.
Jorge and Henry (Vincent Rodriguez III) could be the in love duo ready to put a ring on it. Although they...

Muslim-Pakistani teen Kamala Khan hails from New Jersey, is an avid gamer with an overactive imagination, and a fervent scribe of fan-fiction. Oh, and she also happens to have some crazy superpowers of her own once after exposure to a mist turns her into a polymorph and gives her body the ability to stretch in almost any way possible. Welcome Marvel Studios’ first Muslim superhero lead to the screen with “Ms. Marvel,” the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe series, which hits the Disney+ arrival June 8. Watch the trailer below.
In the footage below, we see Kamala Khan try to attempt a balance of high school, family life, the general pangs of teenagehood, and, of course, her budding superpowers. Kamala is also a particularly huge fan of Captain Marvel (aka Carol Danvers), meaning that this series serves up the kind of pretzel twist meta-dom that’s typical in the MCU.

In 2013, Marvel Comics introduced Kamala Khan, a Pakistani American teenager from New Jersey who idolizes Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. By 2014, Kamala had superhuman abilities, her own solo series and her own superhero moniker — Ms. Marvel — making her the first Muslim superhero to headline a Marvel comic.
Nine years later, Kamala is making history once again in “Ms. Marvel,” the latest Disney Plus series from Marvel Studios that debuted its first trailer on Tuesday. The series will debut on June 8.
Newcomer Iman Vellani won the title role after an extensive search by Marvel Studios. When Disney streaming service Disney+ launched on November 12, 2019, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was still a ways away from making its streaming debut. Marvel titles like Daredevil and Runaways had already graced the streaming world on platforms like Netflix and Hulu, but it wouldn’t be until WandaVision premiered on Jan. 15, 2021 that Marvel’s celluloid canon joined its televised one.
By the time Disney+ Day, a celebration of the streamer’s two-year anniversary, rolled around today, the Marvel machine was in full force. With The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, and Marvel’s What…If? joining the aforementioned WandaVision on television, it would be unthinkable for any Disney+ Day to come and go without some fresh Marvel news. Thankfully, Marvel chief Kevin Feige and the Disney powers-that-be agreed. Not only did Disney+ Day come with some much-needed updates on long-awaited Marvel TV titles, but they were saved until the very end of the presentation.

It may have taken 23 films, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally celebrating a long-in-the-making milestone: the release of the first MCU film to be directed by a solo female filmmaker. After a series of delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Cate Shortland’s “Black Widow” is finally hitting both theaters and Disney+ more than a year after its intended release date. As the first film in the franchise’s “Phase Four,” it’s both a crucial bridge between the 22 movies that came before, and a strong suggestion of what’s to come as the series branches further out.
Despite the film’s many release date delays, its prime new summer slotting comes with a small silver lining. Shortland’s film, though an outlier in the cinematic world — at least for now — arrives as Marvel is in the midst of a push into television series that includes a strong showing from female creators.
