Paul McCartney has appeared on Saturday Night Live several times as a musical guest and considers creator Lorne Michaels a good friend. The late-night sketch comedy series has taken advantage of having the legendary musician on the show and has featured him in a few sketches where the former Beatle can express his funnier side.

Saturday Night Live couldn’t have asked more from Jason Momoa. As with all great hosts, Momoa threw himself into every moment, and his natural charisma shone throughout. The show itself rarely met Aquaman’s energy, however, with a middling effort in the middle week of its December run. It stumbled badly out of the gate with a cold open that suggested Robert De Niro did not know he would be in it until two minutes before air. Momoa dancing to “Aquaboogie” a few minutes during the monologue slightly righted the ship,...

Refresh for updates A new Oscar category for “popular” films doesn’t seem very popular in Hollywood, at least judging by first reactions. “The film business passed away today,” began Rob Lowe’s tweet (read below for the whole thing).
Lowe, of course, had his own Oscar low moment, during his musical number with Snow White in the critically lambasted Allan Carr produced telecast.
“Finally,” wrote Andy Richter, “the Oscars will be giving a statue based on popularity so that those poor mountains of box office money won’t be lonely anymore.”
The new award category, announced today, will honor outstanding achievement in popular film, with eligibility requirements and other key details yet to be announced.
But Hollywood stars and pundits weren’t waiting. Here’s a sampling (we’ll update periodically):

Now that the future is less than certain for Paramount’s ambitious, rebooted Terminator franchise – in this timeline, at least – and Sylvester Stallone’s Expendables have been put on ice, Arnold Schwarzenegger is beginning to snap up roles that aren’t simply designed for fan service.
Case in point: Why We’re Killing Gunther, a new action-comedy hailing from Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam. Poised to make his directorial debut, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Killam has set sights on Schwarzenegger to headline the light-hearted affair, joining Bobby Moynihan, Paul Brittain, Silicon Valley‘s Kumail Nanjiani, Randall Park and Ryan Gaul.
Directing from his own script, the core premise of Why We’re Killing Gunther centers on a squad of international assassins who come together in order to hitch a plan to bump off Gunther, the world’s greatest hitman who, despite his skills, is inherently unlikeable due to his infuriating arrogance.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been cast in the upcoming action comedy Why We're Killing Gunther. I love it when Schwarzenegger does comedy! One of my favorite movies that he was in was True Lies, and it would be great to see him do that kind of film again. This sounds like it could a lot of fun. THR offers the following plot info:

The past couple of years has seen a resurgence of Bigfoot-based horror flicks, taking full advantage of the ever weakening found footage genre. But 'Nigel and Oscar vs. the Sasquatch' will be attempting to shake things up a little by hopefully bringing with it a heap of giggles. "Grown Ups" is the second-highest grossing film on Adam Sandler's resume, so it goes to reason that "Grown Ups 2" was a forgone conclusion. Or maybe not: This is the first sequel Sandler has done in his lengthy career, making him one of the few A-list stars who has been able to survive with an array of original content and not franchises. (The argument, of course, is that Sandler is a franchise himself. Discuss.)
Still, the existence of "Grown Ups 2" feels obvious. So, too, do cameo appearances from Shaquille O'Neil (as a cop, of course), Taylor Lautner (as a bro, of course) and "Saturday Night Live" cast members and alumni like Andy Samberg, Will Forte, Bobby Moynihan, Taran Killam, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer. I was going to title this post "My Favorite Sketches From 2012," but I started thinking how I've gotten up early, every post-"SNL" Sunday morning, on my day off, to write "SNL" Scorecard (which, I will note, I haven't missed once since it started in 2010 - I'm strangely proud of that) only to be yelled at by half of you, each and every time, for my admittedly subjective ranking system. (It's fine! Keep doing that because that is the point.) Because of this, I thought, well, just maybe, I've earned a "Best Sketches" title for my trouble? I mean, no, it's not a true title. These are certainly not the best ten sketches of 2012 (going back to the last half of the 2011-2012 season), because they are only my favorite ten sketches. Regardless, I decided to keep the title of "best sketches" even though it's a lie. Here they are:...

In the few short years since “Funny People” was released, Adam Sandler has made it his goal to outdo the fake terrible movies that his character did in Judd Apatow’s film. The nadir of his inexorable downward slope will probably be next year’s “Grown Ups 2” and he’s bringing along new faces.
While we already know that he'll be joined by Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, "Project X" star Oliver Cooper and Taylor Lautner, new set pictures have surfaced (via Slashfilm) revealing some of the cameos that the film has lined up. There's charismatic NBA star Shaquille O’Neal in full police regalia and rocking a hairstyle reminiscent of George Jefferson. And there's also 'SNL' alums Andy Samberg, Paul Brittain and Will Forte, as well as current member Bobby Moynihan, lounging around in what appears to be cheerleading uniforms for a car wash scene.

"Saturday Night Live" wrapped up its 37th season this past weekend. Along the way, we were paying attention not just to the quality of the individual sketches in our weekly "SNL" Scorecard, but also to the progress of the cast members in regards to airtime and prominence, which we ranked each week in the Relevancy Poll.
Like last season, we certainly weren't going to let that data go to waste, so, we tallied the results to present to you the complete 2011-12 "SNL" Relevancy Poll.
As you will see, the lower the score, the better. And, again, the rankings represent how often an individual cast member appeared on the show, not an opinion of an individual sketch or character. (In other words: These are not my "favorites," this is a barometer of each cast member's airtime and influence.) Each final score is the average weekly poll ranking of each cast...

(In other words: These are not my "favorites," this is a barometer of each cast member's airtime and influence that we kept track of all season here.) Each final score is...

The last time Will Ferrell hosted "Saturday Night Live," the show (and that season) ended with an epic sing-along of Bill Joel's "Goodnight Saigon." Last night's offering did not have that same monumental feel to it -- even though there were guest appearances by Will Forte, Ana Gasteyer, Liam Neeson, Justin Bieber, Michael Bolton, Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm and Justin Timberlake. There were so many guest stars, it felt, at times, like the actual cast had been swept under the rug. Heck, at times, it felt like Ferrell himself was put on the back burner. Since I can't think of a third metaphor for "set aside," let's just move along to this season's penultimate Scorecard.
Sketch of the Night
"Digital Short: 100th Digital Short" (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Justin Beiber, Kene Thompson, Justin Timberlake, Natalie Portman, Michael Bolton, Usher, Jon Hamm, Will Ferrell) Poor Akiva Schaffer has been replaced by Justin Bieber.

Fred Armisen had some kind words on Monday for fellow "Saturday Night Live" cast members Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, and Andy Samberg, all of whom have been rumored to be leaving the late night variety show at the end of this season.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Armisen said he would support their departures if it was time. "I'd be happy for them because they're doing what they want to do," said Armisen. He went on to say of Wiig and Samberg, "They're both smart and intuitive and talented, so we'll always, always be together."
Armisen spoke to THR while attending the opening of "Office" star Jenna Fischer's new film "The Giant Mechanical Man," which also features "Six Feet Under's" Chris Messina, and "Mad Men's" Rich Sommer.

With the reported departure of Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis and Andy Samberg, "Saturday Night Live" would look a lot different when it comes back for its 38th season this fall. But, this season, five shows remain in what will forever be known as "The Kristen Wiig Era." We've already seen "SNL" add a new featured player, Kate McKinnon, during the show's current three week hiatus. ("SNL" returns live this Saturday with host Sofia Vergara.) With many changes coming, Hitfix's Ryan McGee and myself debate where "SNL" is now and where "SNL" should go in the future.
Mike Ryan: Though our opinions differ (frequently) on the quality of individual sketches -- also: I'm sure I'm wrong and you're right -- I do consider you one of the most thoughtful Internet caretakers of this show that we both love so dearly. So, my question, before we get to the cast changes,...

With "Saturday Night Live" featured player Paul Brittain departing earlier this season, there's a little room on the roster for some fresh meat. Now, a new report from Deadline says that comedian Kate McKinnon will fill Brittain's shoes as a new featured player starting with the April 7 episode, hosted by Sofia Vergara.
According to Deadline, McKinnon, along with Jessica Joy, Lauren Lapkus and Elaine Carroll, have all tested for "SNL" honcho Lorne Michaels in recent weeks, but McKinnon made the cut and will debut soon. NBC has not commented officially on the matter.
It makes sense that Michaels is looking to add more women to the cast, since both Kristen Wiig and Abby Elliott could leave the show at the end of the season.
McKinnon comes from New York's Upright Citizens Brigade theater, and was a cast member on Logo's "Big Gay Sketch Show." She also has the distinction of...

This week's Relevancy Poll is the first time in its two-season existence that it hasn't been a ranking of 14 "Saturday Night Live" players. From an outsider's perspective, the loss of Paul Brittain may not seem that remarkable, considering that -- even though he had his fans (ahem) -- he wasn't exactly dominating airtime on the show. Regardless, "SNL" was and is crowded and needed to lose some numbers -- I was hoping it would be in the form of a longtime cast member going on to bigger and better things, but alas ... Even shrinking down to just 13 repertory and featured players should open some doors.
1. Bobby Moynihan: (Last Week: 6) Moynihan kicked off the show with "Newt Gingrich: Moon President" and was pretty much everywhere: Janet, a stripper, Guy Fieri. (As an aside, can you imagine how much fun Moynihan would be having with a Chris Christie candidacy right about now?...

Before I saw the film version of "21 Jump Street" a few weeks ago, I highly doubted the comedic ability of Channing Tatum. After, however, my hopes for his "SNL" hosting appearance were raised significantly. But, for whatever reason, "SNL" decided to really focus on Tatum's beefcake status. Put it this way: I saw Channing Tatum with his shirt off not one, not two, but three times. Channing Tatum portrayed a stripper -- twice. We get it: Channing Tatum is a good-looking guy. (Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that it's quite remarkable Tatum somehow portrayed Peyton Manning and Tom Brady during the same show.) On to a very shirtless scorecard ...

Things are going to be looking a little bit different around Saturday Night Live tonight. Not only will the ubiquitous Channing Tatum be on hand to host the show for his first time (musical guest Bon Iver will make his Studio 8H debut as well), but the SNL cast will be short one member tonight. And the rest of the season, for that matter, as we reported on Tuesday that featured player Paul Brittain has exited the cast for good to “to pursue other projects.”

Back in April 2010, Justin Bieber made his debut on NBC’s long running sketch comedy show, Saturday Night Live, as a musical guest. Flash forward to the present day and there are rumblings that he may be returning, only this time he will be hosting SNL for the first time. I’ve seen Bieber be funny (those Funny or Die April Fool’s Day videos? Hilarious), but that was with some very well written material. More often than not, SNL has been missing the mark when it comes to its sketches, leaving me worried they’ll be able to use Bieber to his full potential.

Saturday Night Live is down a cast member. A show insider has confirmed to E! News that Paul Brittain has left SNL after a one-year stint as a featured player and will not be appearing on this weekend's episode hosted by Channing Tatum. Guess this means no more "Sex" Ed. The 34-year-old funnyman joined the late-night comedy series for its 36th season back in September 2010, but was a relatively quiet presence, never moving up to the rank of regular performer. Among Brittain's most memorable characters were Croatian stand-up comic Goran "Funky Boy" Bogdan, Lord Wyndemere and "Sex" Ed Vincent, a sexpert who holds enthusiastic symposiums on the subject. He also did...

Sources close to "Saturday Night Live" have have confirmed to The Huffington Post that Paul Brittain, best known for his characters Lord Wyndemere and "Sex" Ed Vincent, has left "Saturday Night Live."
Brittain made his first "SNL" appearance on September 25, 2010, on a show hosted by Amy Poehler. Brittain made his mark as a lead performer on October 23 when he introduced the character of "Sex" Ed Vincent -- a "sex education educator" who put on awkwardly dry, yet somewhat graphic sex seminars.
His other popular recurring role was as Lord Wyndemere, a fanciful 18th century-type scamp who lives in the present.
From an audience perspective, Brittain's role as a featured player on the show was sporadic. Brittain would sometimes go whole episodes without an appearance, although that isn't entirely uncommon for a second-year featured player.
What is rare is that Brittain would leave the show mid-season. In 1995, Janeane Garafalo left the...

Let it out, Paul Brittain fans. EW broke the news: After spending a little over a year with Saturday Night Live, the featured player has exited the show “to pursue other projects.” Effective immediately, the cast member will no longer appear in any new episodes, which means you definitely won’t see this week’s host Channing Tatum interact with the wonderfully weird Lord Cecil Wyndemere. Thankfully, everyone’s favorite displaced Lord got in one final appearance during the Charles Barkley episode . Watch the moment below in which Brittain’s tiny, whimsical Wyndemere made the NBA giant break:

Paul Brittain has reportedly exited Saturday Night Live. A source close to the actor has told Entertainment Weekly that Brittain "had the opportunity to pursue other projects, and he and the show parted ways amicably". He apparently will not appear on this weekend's edition of Saturday Night Live, which will be hosted by Channing Tatum and feature music guest Bon Iver. Brittain joined the NBC sketch comedy series in 2010 and impressed viewers with his popular characters 'Sex' Ed Vincent and Lord Cecil Wyndemere. In addition to his original characters, Brittain also notably (more)...

A source close to the actor tells EW that Brittain “had the opportunity to pursue other projects, and he and the show parted ways amicably.” The comedian joined the show in September 2010 and performed original characters like “Sex” Ed Vincent as well as impersonations of stars like James Franco (see below).

This season of Saturday Night Live has claimed its first victim: Paul Brittain, who joined the show in 2010, will be leaving the Not Ready For Prime Time Players, "effective immediately." That sounds ominous, like Brittain was caught stealing cast mates' underwear or accidentally saw Lorne Michaels without his human suit on, but according to "a source," he and the show are parting amicably. (The show will be seeking full custody of the children, but it's letting Brittain keep the house in Narragansett and Rocky, their Weimaraner.) Apparently, the comedian had opportunities elsewhere (movies!) and decided to pursue those, instead of playing a tween for three minutes every Saturday night. This marks the first cast change since Brittain came on (along with Vanessa Bayer, Taran Killam, and Jay Pharoah) and the first exit since Jenny Slate's dismissal in 2010. (We still think that was much [...]...

Sadly, I had high hopes for the Daniel Radcliffe hosted "SNL" this past weekend. Then again, that's what I get for envisioning how good a show should be based on the host. Never again! However, I saw "21 Jump Street" last week and Channing Tatum, who hosts on Feb. 4, does seem to have an unexpected knack for comedy that I wasn't expecting ... There I go again!
There were 14 segments to go around and only 13 cast members (I'm convinced Andy Samberg wasn't there) -- so, plenty of airtime to go around. Then again, there was one cast member who was in almost all of them...
1. Kristen Wiig (Last Week: 6) Wiig was everywhere this week, so, no surprises here! That's not to say that I enjoyed everything she did this week, but, yes, her presence was pretty undeniable. Target Lady had been in storage for a long time and, for whatever reason, she was brought back.

Well, that was disappointing. I learned long ago never to get too caught up with prognosticating the quality of a show based on its host. But, yeah, this time I felt pretty sure about things. "Oh, Daniel Radcliffe has so much stage experience, plus he's just so charming -- this week will be great!" It was not meat to be. I mean, there were a lot of "Ok" sketches last night, but not a lot of moments that stand out. Which is a shame.
Also, quick question: where was Andy Samberg? He had a small role in one pre-taped segment, but I honestly don't think he was there last night. I even looked for him during the "good nights" -- nope. Alas, on to a disheartened scorecard...

In basketball terms, this week’s Saturday Night Live with NBA icon and Weight Watchers spokesperson Charles Barkley may have been a brick. But perhaps the convivial Less-Round Mound of Rebound deserves the benefit of being graded on a curve. After all, even though this was his third time hosting, he’s still more famous for delivering forearms and clutch jumpers, not punchlines. So maybe he gets some extra credit for playing Shaquille O’Neal in a parody of their NBA studio show — even if it wasn’t nearly as funny as the actual thing — for both breaking up with...

The same briefing finally officially stuck a stake in the heart of Allen Gregory.

Unfortunately for Charles Barkley, third time was not the charm.
As Barkley opened the first Saturday Night Live episode of 2012 with a dry monologue about his success with Weight Watchers, the only laughs were as he poked fun at himself — and that trend continued throughout the night.
Although this episode saw the return of a few favorites – Lord Wyndemore, Drunk Uncle and political comedian Nicholas Fehn to name a few – in the end the bad outweighed the good. That said, there were still a few hidden gems. Here are my picks for the best and worst of the night:

This was Charles Barkley's third time hosting "Saturday Night Live." He's had his memorable moments -- like his Jay Mohr-written 1993 monologue in which he plays basketball against Barney the dinosaur -- and I'm sure that he's fun to be around; but, like most athletes, (even though he is a lot better than most), he leaves something to be desired as a host. Last night was no different.
And in early 2009, I did a story on Bobby Moynihan, which eventually resulted with me watching the Tracy Morgan-hosted episode from the "SNL" writers room. The musical guest that night was Kelly Clarkson. When you watch the show from the writers room, you're allowed to go down into the studio to watch the musical guest. I am not what you would call a "Kelly Clarkson fan," but that night, in person, she was electrifying. But last night, for whatever reason, even Kelly Clarkson was.
