Nearly ten year after the Emmy Award-winning first season, “The Jinx” is remarkably back on HBO. Andrew Jarecki, Marc Smerling, and Zac Stuart-Pontier’s engrossing docuseries about the string of murders connected to Robert Durst built to a now-infamous climax, and will return with more story to tell April 21.
Before that, it’s worth revisiting the 2015 series and decades of headlines it interrogates. “The Jinx” gripped its audience with mounting evidence against Durst and a scintillating narrative structure, but also quickly came under fire for manipulating the timeline and even Durst’s hot mic recordings for dramatic effect. In 2015, IndieWire’s Matt Brennan pointed out that “The Jinx” set an impossible standard for documentary drama — one that the series itself had arguably not cleared in the first place. Jessica Kiang wrote that “This is not Jarecki’s gotcha so much as it is a self-initiated, cloudily motivated performance piece of Durst’s,...

Humphrey Bogart and Eleanor Parker in Chain Lightning (1950) will be available on Blu-ray June 22nd from Warner Archive
Matt Brennan (Humphrey Bogart) plans to show the potential of the Ja-3, an experimental jet – by flying it from Nome over the North Pole and into the Pentagon’s lap in Washington, D.C. The Ja-3 has never been tested at this range and can’t provide enough pressurization at 80,000 feet. But Brennan has modifications in mind…and no shortage of courage. Eleanor Parker, as a former World War II flame, fuels the romance in this adventure that tapped into the era’s fascination with jet aviation.
Chain Lightning stars Humphrey Bogart, Eleanor Parker, Raymond Massey, Richard Whorf, and James Brown

Anthony Hopkins’ Best Actor win for “The Father” stunned. Not only was the late Chadwick Boseman widely expected to take the honor, but it also meant there was no final acceptance speech, since the Oscar producers clearly didn’t expect Hopkins to win. Best Actor was the last category of the night, and the 83-year-old actor was asleep in Wales, where it was 4 Am; he didn’t want to travel to one of the broadcast’s satellite locations in Dublin or London, and Zoom speeches were forbidden.
This morning, Hopkins posted a delayed Oscars acceptance speech to his social media accounts. “Here I am in my homeland in Wales,” Hopkins said in his social media acceptance speech. “At 83 years of age, I did not expect to get this award, I really didn’t. I’m very grateful to the Academy – thank you. I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman,...
