The NCIS universe is getting a big expansion quite soon as the franchise is set to welcome two more spinoffs into the family with one of them putting its focus on Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ earlier years as a Special Agent. The upcoming series hasn’t received its release date yet, but what we definitely know so far is that Mark Harmon’s role is now officially passed to Austin Stowell.
Though NCIS’ lovers may never have heard the actor’s name before, his filmography is surely worth checking out, as it features some quite famous flicks, and you probably never knew Stowell was in there too.
Whiplash
Damien Chazelle’s breakout directorial work that back in 2015 earned numerous accolades and prestigious awards got Austin Stowell for portraying Ryan Connolly, a drummer in the band supervised by Shaffer Conservatory’s relentless jazz instructor, Terence Fletcher.
While the latter, brought to the screen by J.

Oscar winner J.K. Simmons made his career on television, appearing in Law & Order and Oz, and while he did play J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy (2002–2007), it wasn’t until Juno (2007) that he became a brand name, later appearing in Burn After Reading (2008), La La Land (2016), Justice League (2017), Being the Ricardos (2021), and other films. But, it was 2014’s Whiplash that earned him his first Oscar and earned him unanimous praise for his portrayal of the sadistic music instructor Terence Fletcher.
But, having said all of this, J.K. Simmons has a new movie coming out on May 17, 2024, an action thriller in which he will play the main role, but which is personal for him on more than one level, but more on that below.

In a world where superhero franchises like Marvel or DC seem to dominate the box office, the adult animated superhero tale of Invincible has quietly emerged as an excellent alternate. Despite not being as big as its contenders, the comic books as well as the animated series with characters like Omni-Man and Invincible have received an incredible reception and praise for rebranding superheroes as someone normal can actually relate with.
Omni-Man in a still from Invincible
Seeing the overwhelming success it has received, especially after its animated Prime Video series started airing, there have been reports of a live-action movie in the works. And fans have been wondering who would be the perfect choice to play Omni-Man.

The Sundance Film Festival is regarded as one of the most prestigious independent film festivals, where filmmakers have been premiering their movies and documentaries since 1984.
The festival was founded in 1978 by Sterling Van Wagenen, the head of Robert Redford’s company Wildwood, and John Earle of the Utah Film Commission under the name Utah/US Film Festival to attract more filmmakers to Utah.
Redford founded the Sundance Institute in 1981 to foster independence, risk-taking, and new voices in American film. That year, 10 emerging filmmakers were invited to the Sundance Resort in the mountains of Utah, where they worked with leading writers, directors and actors to develop their original independent projects.
By 1984, the festival had established itself and was officially renamed the Sundance Film Festival after Redford’s character in his 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. That year, the Grand Jury Prize in Dramatics was awarded to Old Enough, an...

Only two seasons in and "Invincible" has already assembled quite the voice cast. While it relies primarily on name screen actors for the big parts, the show doesn't neglect to invite professional voice actors to the party either. Even the leads offer performances that are a cut above the celebrity voice-acting you see in, for instance, DreamWorks or Illumination animated movies.
It's an easy bet that one can recognize at least some of the voices on "Invincible." Maybe a viewer knows them from watching plenty of American cartoons and hearing their voices over and over again. Or maybe they know the voices from the on-camera work the cast has done but can't place them.
Whatever the case may be, here is a rundown of the actors who've been bringing these comic book characters to life — and how their work on "Invincible" compares to their previous roles.

There’s plenty to look forward to in Hulu’s incoming slate, including the latest “American Horror Story” installment, BAFTA winner “The Banshees of Inisherin,” and new “The Kardashians.” But unfortunately, the streamer has to lose to gain, and new content means a library cleanout.
Throughout the month, Hulu will lose nearly 100 movies and series to make room, including multiple entries in “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” franchises, Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and many others.

In an array of “eat-the-rich” narratives, “Hunger” attempts to tell a similar tale mixed with the power of passion. From the trailer alone, “Hunger” gives off “The Menu” vibes, adding cultural context through a Thai lens, but unfortunately, it’s neither as entertaining nor as impactful due to its tedious pacing and on-the-nose presentation of the concept. Visually, it is charming, and Bangkok looks as dreamy as ever. The trouble is not the concept but the execution. The director of the hit series “Girl From Nowhere,” Sitisiri Mongkolsiri, brings out his thriller instincts in “Hunger,” drenching it in blood and darkness but failing to pack a punch, unlike the aforementioned series. Personally, I think there should’ve been more cultural involvement in “Hunger” than the blatant display of the class divide in Thailand.
“Hunger” follows Aoy (Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying), a culinary prodigy who has recently inherited her father’s pad see ew restaurant.

Blumhouse is a household name among horror fans. The studio, founded by the eponymous Jason Blum, is a frequent producing partner of James Wan and helped launch the directing career of Jordan Peele by producing "Get Out." The studio has a track record of both reviving dormant horror staples, whether it be "Halloween" or "The Invisible Man," and creating new ones, such as this year's "M3GAN."
The Blumhouse catalog is not entirely horror, though. In 2014, the studio produced "Whiplash" alongside "Paranormal Activity" and "The Purge" sequels. Some might argue that the former film, about an aspiring drummer Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) enduring "Full Metal Jacket" style abuse from his instructor Terence Fletcher (Jk Simmons) is a flavor of psychological horror. Still, compared to Blumhouse's usual output, it's a grounded drama.
This makes director Damien Chazelle another wunderkind filmmaker who Blumhouse helped along. During an interview with /Film's own Ben Pearson,...

If there's one thing Damien Chazelle knows how to do, it's an ending. In the heart-rending denouement of "La La Land" we're shown everything Ryan Gosling's Seb and Emma Stone's Mia could have been, before a subtle nod between the two signals a solemn, bittersweet acceptance of their actual circumstances. It's a finale full of false climaxes that explore every possibility to add that much more finality to the true ending.
Before that 2016 musical drama made us all cry, Chazelle had already proven his talent for an emotionally satisfying ending with his breakout 2014 effort, "Whiplash." Drawing on the filmmaker's own experiences of playing in a high school jazz band, the film tells the story of Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller), a drum student at a prestigious New York music academy who will seemingly stop at nothing to become the next Buddy Rich. Throughout the film, he's berated and abused by his instructor,...

In Damien Chazelle's youth, his aspirations flip-flopped from filmmaking to jazz drumming and back again. He combined his two passions for his debut "Whiplash," a short he turned into a feature. Chazelle's story follows Andrew Neimen (Miles Teller), a drumming student determined to be one of the greats. First, Andrew has to survive the tutelage of Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), who's basically Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) from "Full Metal Jacket" if he taught at a conservatory instead of a boot camp.
One film which Chazelle cited as an influence was Martin Scorsese's "Raging Bull." Scorsese's muse Robert De Niro played Jake La Motta, the real-life "Bronx Bull" and championship boxer. As Jake picks up more and more notches on his boxing record, his personal struggles only grow.

Damien Chazelle's second feature film, "Whiplash" is an intense and sometimes horrifying look at what it takes to strive for utter perfection. The film, which premiered at Sundance in 2014, was praised for its sharp direction and performances, specifically from J.K. Simmons, who would go on to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his turn as Terence Fletcher, the twisted instructor to Miles Teller's Andrew Neiman. The film explores the darker side of fueling your passions, showing a detailed look at Andrew's relationship with his abusive instructor.
The cutthroat world of "Whiplash" introduced viewers to may seem far-fetched, as some of the depictions of higher music education and practice could be seen as over the top. The film's ending, in particular, stands out as one of the more disturbing parts of the film, coming off as a tragic ending showing complacency with abuse and the cost of perfectionism.

The message of Damien Chazelle's bloody 2014 film "Whiplash" is a direct counterargument to arguments typically heard in college movies. In most cases, when a college student finds themselves pushing themselves to the point of burnout -- a trope seen in films like "Real Genius," "Good Will Hunting," or even "Legally Blonde" -- the movie stops to let the characters know that relaxation, breaks, parties, and friendship can take precedence, even if it's temporary. Don't lose sight of your humanity. If the school demands more than 100 from its students, it's typically depicted as a negative, as in James Bridges' "The Paper Chase." In all cases, hard-nosed and demanding professors typically read as villains, sometimes even sadists, too eager to tear down students who don't meet their too-exacting standards.
"Whiplash," in contrast, argues that in order to truly learn and achieve greatness, a student has to endure all kinds of torture.

On one level, Damien Chazelle's "Whiplash" is a story of an abusive relationship between a driven young student and a music teacher from hell. Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons in an Oscar-winning role) physically, verbally, and mentally abuses his students. It's all right there on the surface and cannot be condoned. In a classroom about as far removed from a safe space as you can get, Fletcher throws a chair at drummer Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller), repeatedly slaps him in the face, and calls him the worst things imaginable.
That's just one session. It's almost cartoonish how awful Fletcher is, as if the movie wants you to laugh along a little with some of his lines. Yet there's no denying that this guy, the supposed adult in the room, is a harasser and bully who berates college kids and humiliates them—to the point where it's implied that he even...

Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash seemingly came out of nowhere back in 2014. The film was about an inspiring young jazz drummer, Andrew Neiman, who gets into an elite music band that’s held by Terence Fletcher. Despite being one of the top music conservatories, Fletcher is known for his shady practices and the up-and-coming jazz drummer suffers the full force of the jazz teacher’s terrifying methods firsthand. Andrew wants to achieve perfection and he spirals into obsession due to his ruthless teacher pushing him past his breaking point. The independent film earned five Academy Awards and left the prestigious event with the

Emmy voters know a good bargain when they see one, so they’re often eager to reward two performances for the price of one. Sally Field (“Sybil”) and Toni Collette (“United States of Tara”) won for playing multiple personalities. And Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) prevailed as a combo platter of identical clones. Now Emmy voters could give the nod to J.K. Simmons for playing two versions of the same man in the Starz sci-fi thriller “Counterpart.”
The series premiered in December 2017 and stars Simmons as Howard Silk, a United Nations bureaucrat in Berlin who works for an agency whose purpose he doesn’t quite understand. It turns out his agency oversees a gateway to a parallel world with another version of Howard who crosses between worlds on dangerous field missions.

Whiplash was a 2014 movie centered around a music student named Andrew Neiman, who wants to become as good as the famous jazz drummer Buddy Rich. As a result, Andrew becomes the student of a famous conductor named Terence Fletcher, who treats his students in a manner that is best described as being outright abusive. For example, there was one moment when Andrew struggled to perform the titular piece, which resulted in Fletcher hurling a chair at him as well as berating him in front of the entire class. With that said, what a lot of people will remember best
