Drake & Josh star Drake Bell said in a new interview that his three-year-old son helped inspire him to vocalize the alleged sexual abuse he suffered as a child star. Bell has made headlines in recent months as the principal subject of the five-part docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, where Nickelodeon crew members, child actors, and parents detail a kids network rife with misconduct, discrimination, and abuse. No longer content with just owning the original General Lee car from the Dukes of Hazzard, Kid Rock mocked up a Tesla Cybertruck to look like the famous orange 1969 Dodge Charger.
The musician used it to make a grand entrance at his Rock N Rodeo show outside Dallas on Saturday night, singing “Cowboy” from the bed of the Elon Musk pickup while Dukes of Hazzard star John Schneider drove the car. It was a spectacle very much in-line with Kid Rock and Schneider’s whole stick-it-to-the-libs vibe, down to the...

Plot: The incredible true story of Hollywood revolution meeting social revolution: it’s a wild caper of Black Panther founder Huey Newton escaping from the FBI to Cuba with the help of famed producer Bert Schneider in an impossibly elaborate plan – involving a fake movie production — that goes wrong every way it possibly can. And somehow, it’s all true. Mostly.
Review: The stories of revolutionary political figures and social reformers have been popular for big and small screen adaptations for decades. There seems to be more focus on the 1960s and 1970s than any other period in American history. The 2021 film Judas and the Black Messiah looked at controversial figure Fred Hampton, while this year’s Shirley chronicled Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s run for United States President. While these and the stories of Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X have made for acclaimed productions, the story of Black...

In the opening narration of The Big Cigar, actor André Holland, who portrays Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton in the Apple TV+ biographical drama, delivers a disclaimer about the events that will be portrayed onscreen: “The story I’m about to tell you is true, at least mostly true, at least how I remember it,” Holland says. “But it is coming through the lens of Hollywood, so let’s see how much of my story they’re really willing to show.”
The statement both echoes concerns Holland had about taking on the project and sets the tone for the element of humor that underlies the retelling of Newton’s first dealings with the Hollywood machine when bigtime producer Bert Schneider, in his zeal for social justice causes, nearly begs the revolutionary leader to help him spread his message of resistance. The Big Cigar, a new limited series on Apple TV+ that debuts on May 17, dramatizes a wild true story from the New Hollywood period of the 1970s.
Huey P. Newton, the co-founder of The Black Panther Party, had befriended a group of countercultural figures ruling Tinseltown at the time.
Bert Schneider and Steve Blauner were part of the generation that brought the values of the 1960s counterculture to the movie business through films such as Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces, as well as the work of The Monkees.
This also entailed bankrolling and supporting left-wing political causes, including the Black Panthers' work.
But that approach had its limits.
The series, which consists of six episodes lasting about 40 minutes each, was produced by Jim Hecht, an executive producer of Winning Time.
Don Cheadle is among the episode directors.

Early on in the Big Cigar, Schneider exclaims, “I want to finance the revolution!

At one point in the new Apple TV+ miniseries The Big Cigar, Black Panther Party founder Huey P. Newton (André Holland) attends a party and recalls the time he and film producer Bert Schneider (Alessandro Nivola) tried to write a movie about his life, which would have starred comedian Richard Pryor (Inny Clemons). The key, Schneider explains: “If it’s gonna be a biopic, you have to choose a moment in Huey’s life that means something. Don’t just make it womb to tomb.”

Victoria Justice, who headlined Nickelodeon’s popular series “Victorious” for four seasons and 57 episodes between 2010 and 2013, said in a new interview with Marie Claire that she feels like series creator Dan Schneider owes her an apology as she was “treated unfairly” at times on the show. Schneider also created the series “Zoey 101,” which Justice appeared on prior to “Victorious.”
Schnieder has come under fire this year in the wake of the Investigation Discovery series “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” which included many misconduct allegations against him from his tenure at Nickelodeon. Clips from “Victorious” were heavily featured in the documentary as Schnieder was accused of making his young actors do inappropriate things on camera. Justice starred in the show alongside Ariana Grande, Elizabeth Gillies and more.
“Something that was very evident in the documentary is that Dan had a very large ego,” Justice told Marie Claire.

Victoria Justice shared her reaction to the Quiet on Set docuseries this week, saying the program shed light on former Nickelodeon exec Dan Schneider’s “very large ego.”
Justice starred in Nickelodeon shows Zoey 101 and Victorious from 2005 to 2013. Both series were produced by Schneider, who was accused of workplace misconduct and sexual harassment by many of Justice’s peers in Quiet on Set. Schneider released an apology following the documentary’s release and later sued the show’s producers for defamation.
Speaking to Marie Claire this week, the actress and singer said her experience with the children’s network was mostly positive but that the docuseries did accurately portray Schneider’s “very large ego,” which sometimes “clouded his better judgment and affected the way he treated people.”

In the wake of headline-making docuseries Quiet on Set, its subject Dan Schneider is facing new claims of sexual misconduct.
Former All That star Lori Beth Denberg tells Business Insider, in an interview conducted by Quiet on Set executive producer Kate Taylor, that Schneider played pornography for her, lashed out at her on set and once initiated phone sex.
In 1995, the powerful kids TV producer, who served as head writer on All That, called Denberg into his office, telling her that a female producer had met with him to discuss Denberg’s weight gain. He was reportedly upset and told Denberg he should’ve been the one to talk with her, since he “understood what it was like to be overweight,” Business Insider writes.

Matt Dillon is taking on the legacy of Marlon Brando for a biopic about the making of Bernardo Bertolucci’s controversial “Last Tango in Paris.”
Dillon portrays Brando alongside Anamaria Vartolomei as Maria Schneider for Jessica Palud’s upcoming “Maria,” which is set to debut at Cannes later this week in the Cannes Premiere section. “Maria” follows Schneider’s life after starring in “Last Tango in Paris” at age 19, during which she filmed an unsimulated rape scene with Brando in 1973 at director Bertolucci’s (Giuseppe Maggio) instruction. The film is based on Vanessa Schneider’s 2018 memoir “My Cousin Maria Schneider,” which was translated by Molly Ringwald.
Per the memoir, Bertolucci did not tell Schneider the full extent of the film’s plot until right before production. Schneider allegedly was unaware of the pivotal scene in which Brando’s character anally rapes her character using a stick of butter as lubricant.

Jeopardy! super-champ Amy Schneider is ready to respond head-on to criticism about her inclusion in the current Masters tournament. Season 2 of Jeopardy! Masters kicked off last week with six of the game’s most elite players battling it out for the coveted title and $500,000 grand prize. Those competing include reigning Masters champ James Holzhauer, last year’s runners-up Matt Amodio & Mattea Roach, 2024 Tournament of Champions winner Yogesh Raut, and Jeopardy! Some fans felt the spot should have gone to someone else who hasn’t had as many opportunities as Schneider. “We just saw her in Jit, whats the point if she can lose that and just move on anyways,” said one commenter on the Jeopardy! The five-part documentary series Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV was bound to cause trouble. The Investigation Discovery series premiered in March, while the final episode aired in April this year. The series focused on the dark, behind-the-scenes stories from popular 1990s and 2000s children’s programs, showing us what actually happened behind the cheerful and smiling facade that all of us saw on the screens. The series’s particular focus was Dan Schneider’s tenure as a producer and showrunner at Nickelodeon. And while Schneider undoubtedly created some of the most memorable children’s shows of all time, the series showed the dark side of his work.
Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV received praise from both critics and viewers for all the great work invested in crafting the series, although some critics have commented on how the series avoided portraying Nickelodeon’s workplace culture properly.

Dan Schneider, the former creator and showrunner of Nickelodeon series “All That,” “iCarly,” and “Zoey 101,” is suing the producers of the hit documentary series “Quiet on Set.” IndieWire has obtained the lawsuit.
Schneider says his portrayal in the Investigation Discovery series, which peels the layers back on alleged child abuse — including, in some cases, sexual abuse — on Nickelodeon series of the era, is a “hit job” and that his reputation has been “destroyed” by the popularity of the series. The suit names Warner Bros. Discovery, Maxine Productions, Sony Pictures Television, and directors Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz.
“‘Quiet on Set’s’ portrayal of Schneider is a hit job,” the lawsuit from Schneider’s attorneys Jana Moser and Richard McKie reads. “While it is indisputable that two bona fide child sexual abusers worked on Nickelodeon shows, it is likewise indisputable that Schneider had no knowledge of their abuse, was not complicit in the abuse,...

Dan Schneider is taking his gripes with Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV to court. The former Nickelodeon show creator and producer is at the center of the story in Investigation Discovery’s headline-making docuseries, with accusations including incidents of sexism, racism, and toxicity on the sets of his shows by former adult colleagues and child actors. The series also presents horrifying details about one actor’s experience being assaulted by a later-convicted child abuser, and Schneider reportedly contends that the marketing materials conflate the two portions of the story, making him look like he was involved with the latter. In a lengthy statement provided to The Wrap, Schneider explained his decision to take action for defamation against producers of the docuseries — despite owning up to some of the behavioral issues alleged by the former child stars featured in the series — by saying, “Recently the docuseries Quiet...

Dan Schneider has sued Investigation Discovery for defamation over his portrayal in Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, accusing the company of falsely implying that he sexually abused children who worked on the Nickelodeon series he created and ran.
Schneider, in a lawsuit filed on Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, says his depiction in the five-part docuseries is a “hit job.” While it’s true that two child sexual abusers worked on network shows, he says he had “no knowledge of their abuse,” condemned it and “was not a child sexual abuser himself.”
“But for the sake of clickbait, ratings, and views — or put differently, money — Defendants have destroyed Schneider’s reputation and legacy through the false statements and implications that Schneider is exactly that,” the lawsuit says.
Warner Bros. Discovery, which distributed the project on Max, and producers Maxine Productions and Sony Pictures Television are also named in the complaint.

Showrunners are the creative visionaries of a series.
They might not be the original creators, but they cover all aspects of the creative elements, evolve the show's vision, and decide where the story and character arcs will go.
They run the writing rooms, head the development, hire writers, and ensure actors are kept happy and that the budget is not exceeded.
Series are usually a collective effort, with writers giving their thoughts, but showrunners have the final say and are essential.
Where would the industry be without people like Shonda Rhimes, Matt and Ross Duffer (Stranger Things), and Ryan Murphy?
It would be mundane and repetitive.
Intelligent and prolific showrunners are the difference between a hit and a flop.
They set an unwavering tone for their ideas, and consistency is vital.
If the reason you fell in love with a series is altered or gone one day, then the connection created is absent,...

A few years ago, filmmakers Emma Schwartz and Mary Robertson remember taking note of video compilations from old Dan Schneider series that showed children and young teens “enacting scenes that are arguably sexual in nature.”
“One example you see Ariana Grande squeezing a potato, or Ariana Grande — who was then a young teenager — pouring water on her chest and face,” Robertson recalls during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted event. “And you see Jamie Lynn Spears receiving this squirt of a viscous liquid on her face. And there were many on social media who were asking, ‘Did I grow up watching these clips?’ “
Their shock over what they found on social media, together with a story about ’90s kids TV in Business Insider, is what prompted the creation of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. The Investigation Discovery docuseries set out to uncover the...

André Holland takes on the role of revolutionary Huey P. Newton in the trailer for Apple TV+’s The Big Cigar.

Like most things in Hollywood, “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” began with a promise.
After years of whispered complaints about the sometimes-shady world of children’s entertainment, an investigative team set out to expose Dan Schneider’s Nickelodeon and the years of alleged abuse endured by the kids who worked there from 1994 to 2018. Others had tried to tell this story, but this time serious journalists planned to expose the industry’s seamy underbelly — documenting past wrongs, giving voice to victims, and charting tangible change.

Comedian Rob Schneider is refuting a news item that appeared on Politico’s website this week stating that his stand-up set at a GOP event in late 2023 was cut short when his jokes were deemed too lewd for the conservative crowd.

Rob Schneider is refuting a recent Politico report (via Vanity Fair) that claimed a stand-up comedy set he performed last year at a networking event for Republican lawmakers was cut shorts after his jokes bombed. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith reportedly walked out of the room and the set was allegedly cut short after just 10 minutes.
“I’m not changing my material or apologizing for my jokes to anybody,” Schneider said in a statement to TMZ when asked about the report. “Enough with this woke bullshit. America’s sick of it. I did 50 minutes because that’s what I was paid to do. Nobody removed me from stage. Somebody waved to me at the 50 minute mark.”
According to the Politico report, Schneider’s set was full of “raunchy” material and some jokes were “aimed at Asian people,” including one about “Korean whorehouses.” The comedian told TMZ that many of these jokes were actually included in his 2020 Netflix.

The best documentaries reveal the truth about more than just their primary subjects, and the 20 true-crime series here expose the rot at the core of many of our venerated institutions.
These shows shine a light on our flawed jury and appeals processes, with a recurring theme of corruption highlighted in patterns of forced confessions, police negligence, and prosecutors withholding exculpatory evidence. Of course, while all of them attempt to locate some semblance of “the truth,” not all of them provide a truly complete or objective picture. But that doesn’t make them any less compelling or, in some cases, downright infuriating.
