Entering what some may call her absurdist era, Emma Stone continues to captivate audiences, fresh off her peculiar yet heartwarming Poor Things performance that earned her a second Oscar. Now, she returns with another head-turning film titled Kinds of Kindness, which recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
Emma Stone in a still from Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness | Distribution: Searchlight Pictures
Labeling the film as anything less than utterly insane would fall short. Co-star Jesse Palmer’s response upon delving into the script echoed that of the audience who witnessed it unfold at Cannes. He confessed that experiencing the wide range of emotions stirred by the movie left him feeling as though his entire body was on fire.

Kinds of Kindness is a bizarre, twisted, and dark comedy that weaves together three interconnected stories.

This one is for the true Lanthimites, the Dogtooth sisters, the biscuit women, The Killing of a Sacred Deer heads, a film to which the callbacks are so abundant that one can’t help but wonder what the connection is for writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos and co-screenwriter Efthimis Filippou behind the scenes, outside of simply sharing tones and themes that all of their other films share. Regardless, the director as we knew him pre-Emma Stone is back (relatively speaking). And this time… with Emma Stone!
In his eighth feature, old and new Lanthimos merge, the former reflected in story scope, unreal realism, and bone-dry Greek comedy, all wrapped up in the much-felt return of Filippou, with whom he last wrote Sacred Deer just before he launched into the Hollywood stratosphere with Tony McNamara and The Favourite, the dawn of his Emma Stone collaboration-turned-creative-partnership. Fresh off his brief but scene-stealing performance in “Civil War,” Jesse Plemons is reteaming with six-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos for his next film, now titled “Bugonia,” which has landed at Focus Features for North America. Plemons is also one of the many ensemble talents in Lanthimos’ “Kinds Of Kindness,” which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and co-stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer (read our review).

Jesse Plemons, Yorgos Lanthimos, Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe Photo: Richard Mowe There was a lot of “musing” going on when Kinds Of Kindness director Yorgos Lanthimos and star Emma Stone who has previously appeared under his guidance in three films, met at a media gathering at the Cannes Film Festival with fellow cast members Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons, Mamoudou Athie, Hunter Schafer and Hong Chau.
Neither Lanthimos or Stone could decide who was the other’s muse - and finally both agreed that they inspired each other and she would sign up for anything he wants her to do.
The Greek film provocateur said: “I certainly don’t mistreat the body, at least practically. I’m observing life, and a lot of it is dark, and harm and ridiculousness and awkwardness. We try to incorporate all that, and it starts from physicality.”

Cannes – They may have already collaborated on three feature films and a short, but get one thing straight. Emma Stone isn’t Yorgos Lanthimos‘ muse. It’s the other way around. As the two-time Best Actress winner noted with a sly wink during the “Kinds of Kindness” press conference, “He’s my muse.”

Emma Stone tackled several questions on feminism while speaking at the Cannes Film Festival press conference for Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds Of Kindness.
“I mean I am feminist, whether that’s activism or not it just makes sense to me,” the actor said regarding how her feminism influences the films she chooses. “These stories are just stories that feel interesting to me as an actor.
“I don’t know that I’m really the type of actor that’s like ’I need to do this film because it has this particular message’. I just find the characters interesting. The world is interesting,...

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most important cinematic events of the year. Not only is it a popular market for future and unreleased movies, but it is also the place where many films have their premiere and where the audiences can see them for the first time. After the premieres of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Megalopolis, another upcoming hit also had its premiere yesterday and it seems that the critics are absolutely amazed with the movie! We have already written about Yorgos Lantihmos’ upcoming film, Kinds of Kindness, and we can confirm that the early reviews point to the Greek director having another major hit for us!

At this point, any actor signing on for a Yorgos Lanthimos film knows they wont be resting on their laurels. Literally. One of his trademarks is a kind of heightened physicality — whether its Rachel Weisz and Joe Alwyn twerking in “The Favourite,” Emma Stone “furious jumping” in “Poor Things” or Nicole Kidman lending a man a hand, so to speak, in a parking lot in “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.”
This kind of movement, be it awkward, sexy or just bizarre, came up on Saturday during the Cannes Film Festival press conference for Lanthimos’ latest, “Kinds of Kindness.” Reunited with Stone, Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, and newcomers Jesse Plemons, Mamoudou Athie, Hunter Schafer and Hong Chau, the new project sees the acting troupe engage in group sex, hardcore breakdancing, reckless driving and some light cannibalism. Another day on a Lanthimos set.

Just eight months after filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and star Emma Stone unveiled Poor Things at Venice, the duo are back on the festival circuit with Kinds of Kindness. The frequent collaborators faced the press at Cannes, where they tried to define the alchemy between their relationship, which netted Stone an Oscar for Poor Things and also includes The Favourite. Stone brushed off the suggestion that she was Lanthimos’ muse, responding, ““He’s my muse.”
“I feel like I can do anything with him, because we’ve worked together so many times,” said Stone. “I trust him beyond the trust I’ve had with any director, and I’ve been lucky to work with great directors.”
As is common at Cannes, female stars are asked to share their thoughts on the #MeToo movement or being a woman in the industry. In this case, Stone was asked about how her work with...

Mamoudou Athie can practically taste the lobster rolls from the Carlton hotel. He smiles wistfully as he taps into that sense memory of his first trip to the Cannes Film Festival. In 2023, Athie voiced the lead role in Disney-Pixar’s “Elemental,” which closed the fest. And he’s returning this week as part of the first-rate ensemble of Yorgos Lanthimos’ offbeat movie “Kinds of Kindness.”
Discussion of the crustacean-filled dish might seem irrelevant, but it’s perhaps not incidental. Athie begins our conversation by revealing that his first encounter with Lanthimos’ unique sensibilities was 2015’s “The Lobster.” The Mauritanian American actor, who was studying at Yale School of Drama at the time, was captivated by the originality of the material and the conviction the filmmaker brought to his craft.

Following four Oscar wins just a few months ago for his Emma Stone-starrer Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos unveiled his latest feature at Cannes’ Grand Theatre Lumiere this evening. His three-hour absurdist anthology Kinds of Kindness, also starring Stone as well as Willem Dafoe and Jesse Plemons, reaped a six-minute ovation.
The Searchlight Pictures title also stars Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schafer.
The anthology movie is described as a “triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.”
In her review for Deadline, Stephanie Bunbury called it “puzzling, brilliant and, in all honesty, not easy to like.”

Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness,” starring Emma Stone, freaked out Cannes Film Festival on Friday night with an anthology of stories about sex cults, cannibalism and general debauchery.
Lanthimos’ follow-up to “Poor Things” earned a 4.5-minute standing ovation, with the director and his cast — including Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau and Joe Alwyn — leaving while the applause was still going. “Kinds of Kindness” tells three distinctive stories with cast members playing different roles in each. There were a few walkouts during the Cannes premiere, most of them coming after the film’s gorier, second chapter. Lanthimos abruptly left the screening and didn’t speak to audience members once the clapping stopped.
The film, like many of Lanthimos’ avant-garde offerings, overflows with outré plot twists as well as some outrageous moments — like Chau licking sweat off her followers as part of a cult ritual, a man who becomes...

Yorgos Lanthimos revealed his particular brand of niceness as the Cannes Film Festival presented the world premiere of his twisted Kinds of Kindness on Friday night.
The film, which reunites The Favourite and Poor Things director Lanthimos and star Emma Stone, was greeted with a 4-minute ovation inside the packed Grand Lumiere Theatre. As far as Cannes ovations go, that’s on the short end of the spectrum (Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis clocked in at 10 minutes Thursday night, while at Venice last year, Lanthimos’ Poor Things received minutes of cheers). Still, basking in the applause were Lanthimos and Stone, fellow Poor Things alums Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, plus Jesse Plemons, Mamoudou Athie, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn and Hunter Schafer. Others in attendance including Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Nomadland filmmaker Chloe Zhao and Ukrainian 20 days in Mariupol documentarian Mstyslav Chernov.

Two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone further expands her cinematic universe alongside auteur Yorgos Lanthimos with their latest collaboration “Kinds of Kindness.”
Yet while “Poor Things” was an Academy Award-winning feature, the Cannes premiere for “Kinds of Kindness” seemed to puzzle critics and fans alike. The feature, which was originally titled “And”, is Lanthimos’ eighth film and co-stars Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Jesse Plemons, Hunter Schafer, Joe Alwyn, Hong Chau, and Mamoudou Athie.
Lanthimos previously described the contemporary anthology film as being “three different stories, with four or five actors who play one part in each story, so they all play three different parts,” which, according to the director, was “almost like making three films” in one.
Lanthimos reunited with frequent screenwriter collaborator Efthimis Filippou to pen the script for “Kinds of Kindness.” The duo previously co-wrote Lanthimos’ “Dogtooth,” “The Lobster,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” and “Alps.”

Element Pictures is coming off the back of yet another buzzy awards season with its absurdist comedy Poor Things, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, notching 11 Oscar nominations and coming home with four wins, including Best Actress for Emma Stone. But just when it feels like the company’s trajectory can’t get higher, the Irish-Anglo production, distribution and exhibition banner is hitting the Croisette this year with no less than three films in the Cannes official selection. Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness, which reunites him with his long-term writing partner Efthimis Fillipou and Poor Things stars Stone and Willem Dafoe, will compete for the Palme d’Or, while French actor Ariane Labed’s directorial debut September Says and I Am Not a Witch director Rungano Nyoni’s sophomore feature On Becoming A Guinea Fowl are both screening in the Un Certain Regard section.

When she’s not busting a move in the latest teaser trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness, Emma Stone is adding an untitled Universal film to her Hollywood dance card. The Oscar-winning actress is in talks to join Brigsby Bear director Dave McCary for a forthcoming feature. McCary is in negotiations with Universal Pictures about helming the mysterious project. Stone and McCary tied the knot in 2020, making this union a couple’s venture.

Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump drama The Apprentice, Anora, the latest from The Florida Project and Red Rocket director Sean Baker, and Andrea Arnold’s Bird, starring Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski, are among the highlights of this year’s Cannes Film Festival competition.
Abbasi, the Iran-born, Sweden-based director, whose Holy Spider was a sensation of the 2022 Cannes festival, returns with his story of how a young Donald Trump and the notorious lawyer Roy Cohn built up Trump’s real estate business in New York in the 1970s and 1980s. Sebastian Stan stars as Trump, Succession‘s Jeremy Strong plays Cohn and Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) is wife Ivana.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things follow-up Kinds of Kindness will also premiere in the Cannes competition. The film, featuring the Oscar-winning Poor Things star Emma Stone, will be high on every Cannes attendee’s must-see list. The Greek auteur has again...

Emma Stone, hot off her Best Actress Oscar-winning performance in Poor Things, reunites with that film’s writer/director Yorgos Lanthimos for Kinds of Kindness. The first teaser trailer doesn’t give away much of the plot, instead showing off clips of a fast car, a body being dragged in a hallway, a slap, a dance, and a German Shepherd. The only dialogue is a voice-over by Stone saying, “This is it. The moment of truth. Isn’t it wonderful?”
Lanthimos’ latest film also features Poor Things‘ Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley. Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer also star.

There’s a whole lot of slapping, dancing, freaking out, and reckless driving in the new teaser for Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming movie Kinds of Kindness, which is set to hit select theaters on June 21.
The new clip for the film doesn’t offer, well, anything in the way of plot, but it is a tantalizing look at the film’s absolutely stacked cast. Emma Stone is doing some seriously reckless driving, as is Jesse Pelmons, who’s also getting slapped in the face by Margaret Qualley. Set to the Eurythmics...

Poor Things stars Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe reunite with Yorgos Lanthimos for the first look at Kinds of Kindness.
A teaser for the “triptych fable,” previously titled And, gave fans a first look at the film, which in its official synopsis follows “a man without a choice who tries to take control of his life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.”
“This is it. The moment of truth,” says Stone in a voiceover as a purple sports car drifts. The 45-second teaser gives glimpses at each of the film’s stars, many of whom are previous Lanthimos collaborators — Margaret Qualley, Joe Alwyn, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schafer.

"This is it - the moment of truth." Searchlight Pictures has revealed an official teaser trailer for the next new Yorgos Lanthimos film titled Kinds of Kindness, ready for release this summer. Lanthimos filmed this with Emma Stone and an ensemble cast after shooting Poor Things but before that debuted last year. This is expected to premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in May, though it hasn't been announced yet. Kinds of Kindness is described as a strange anthology film with three segments - following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability. The exquisite cast includes Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, Hunter Schafer, and Krystal Alayne Chambers. Oh my yes,...

The Greek auteur is at it again! Here’s the first trailer for Kinds Of Kindness, Yorgos Lanthimos’ first film after Poor Things.
It’s only been a few weeks since Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things took home several Oscars, including Best Actress for Emma Stone. You’d think that the Greek director would like a little break, but there’s no rest for the wicked – or, more to the point, for Lanthimos either.
We reported a while back that Kinds Of Kindness, which seems to have been previously titled And, was set as Lanthimos’ next film and that it would take the form of an anthology. The film has changed its title to Kinds Of Kindness, and we’ve now got a very brief teaser trailer ahead of the film’s June release.
Take a look at the first Kinds Of Kindness trailer below.

It’s fun to think that when Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos were on the Oscar campaign trail during the early months of the year, they already had a new project under their belts. “Kinds of Kindness” marks the third straight feature collaboration between actress and director (and Searchlight Pictures) after “The Favourite” and “Poor Things,” both of which won their leading performers, Olivia Colman and Stone, Best Actress Oscars.
The first teaser for this new joint was released this morning and it’s one of those 46-second clips that tells you absolutely nothing but flashes a ton of cool imagery in your face. Set to a remixed version of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” by the Eurythmics, we see Stone zooming around in a purple muscle car (and dancing in an empty parking lot), a close-up of a dog in black and white, Jesse Plemons getting whapped across...

Fans of Arthouse Emma Stone Sicko Cinema™, have I got good news for you. Coming off her second Oscar win, the "La La Land" star is currently in the midst of shooting what's sure to be a strange and twisted spin on the Western genre in the shape of Ari Aster's "Eddington." But before we lay our eyes on the "Midsommar" and "Beau Is Afraid" director's latest oddity, Stone herself will reunite with her "Poor Things" and "The Favourite" helmer Yorgos Lanthimos for a new project.
Titled "Kinds of Kindness," Stone and Lanthimos finished shooting their new film near the tail-end of 2022, which is the reason it's already good to go so soon after "Poor Things" once again stirred up the "Are Sex Scenes Necessary?" discourse. The movie sees Lanthimos directing from an original script he co-penned with his "Dogtooth," "The Lobster," and "The Killing of a Sacred Deer...

Yorgos Lanthimos is examining the kinds of cruelty in his latest film “Kinds of Kindness.”
The feature, which was originally titled “And”, marks Lanthimos’ eighth film and reunites the auteur with two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone following her recent “Poor Things” Best Actress win. Stone previously garnered her first Oscar after starring in Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.”
While the plot details for the Searchlight Pictures release remain elusive, we do know that “Kinds of Kindness” is an anthology film with three separate storylines that collide. “It’s great to be working again with Emma,” Lanthimos told The Guardian about the project. “It makes it so much easier to have someone there who trusts you so much, and who you trust so much.” The duo are next set...

Quickly following up last year’s Poor Things, we’ll be getting Yorgos Lanthimos’ next feature sooner than expected as Kinds of Kindness arrives this summer. Featuring a reunion with Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Joe Alwyn, with an ensemble also including Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer, the anthology feature presents three short stories in which the actors play different characters in each. Now, ahead of a June 21 release and likely Cannes Film Festival debut, Searchlight Pictures has unveiled the first trailer.
Here’s the synopsis: “Kinds Of Kindness is a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.

Iconic Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki emerged from his self-announced retirement, which began a few years after he made “The Wind Rises” (2013), to tell the autobiographical story of “The Boy and the Heron.” Studio Ghibli president Toshio Suzuki had to reassemble the staff of the production company to complete the task, and the hard work was recognized with the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in March 2024.
The 2023 film added another Oscar to the animation director’s accolades after “Spirited Away” won the Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2011. The Academy Award win will send the film back into theaters for a limited time, and fresh off the win at the beginning of March, the film set two different streaming homes depending on where you live.

The planet might be on fire, but at least Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have found one another. The "La La Land" actor and "The Lobster" filmmaker didn't exactly read as an obvious pairing, yet they're already on their way to joining Hepburn-Cukor, Stewart-Hitchcock, and De Niro-Scorsese in the ranks of all-time great actor-director duos. After a couple of feature films ("The Favourite" and "Poor Things") and a short ("Bleat"), the one thing we can say for certain is that we'll never know precisely what these two are going to get up to next.
Speaking of which, we're only days removed from Stone's surprise Best Actress Oscar win for "Poor Things," yet we've already got a release date for her next collaboration with Lanthimos. The duo will return in just a few months with "Kinds of Kindness," a film that they shot back in late 2022 which was previously going by the (impressively Seo-unfriendly) title "And.
