A creator golf tournament will tee off in Indiana on June 18. On that date, an eclectic group of professional athletes, creators, and golf YouTubers will come together for the Good Good Golf Midwest Open.
The Midwest Open is being put on by the titular golf creators of Good Good, a links-set YouTube channel that reaches more than 1.5 million subscribers. After attracting a 50-player field for the Desert Open earlier this year, Good Good is planning a gathering at French Lick Golf, a course the Good Good guys have described as their favorite in the United States.
According to Dexerto, the Desert Open drew a live audience of more than 100,000 peak concurrent viewers. For their jaunt to the Midwest, Good Good is looking to draw another six-digit crowd by recruiting some celebrity contestants. Tech reviewer Marques Brownlee has already been confirmed for the tournament, as has Los Angeles Lakers sharpshooter Austin Reaves.

Rfid wallet company Ridge has been sponsoring Marques Brownlee‘s tech-talk YouTube videos for years.
Now it’s officially bringing him into the company–as both chief creative partner and board member.
LA-based Ridge has been making its flagship Rfid wallets since its founders, father-son team Daniel and Paul Kane, ran a Kickstarter campaign for the product in 2013. It’s since expanded its line to include travel and lifestyle products like luggage and rings, and over the past decade says it’s “worked with thousands of creators and sponsored billions of views across Twitch, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.”
The company told Fortune it’s not exactly sure what Brownlee’s day-to-day responsibilities will be, but CEO Sean Frank said that for now, “he’s teaching us to be more of a content-first brand, like how we actually get better at storytelling instead of just running static image ads on Facebook.

OpenAI has announced another innovation in the field of generative artificial intelligence. The parent company of ChatGPT has revealed Sora, a platform that creates realistic videos based on prompts provided by users.
Sam Altman, who was reinstated as OpenAI’s CEO last November, introduced Sora in a post on X. He explained that the new platform is only available to a small group of users while “red teamers” — cybersecurity experts who look for flaws in software — conduct their sweep of Sora.
In the simplest terms, Sora is a video version of Dall-e, the OpenAI model that turns text prompts into AI-generated images. With Sora, the Microsoft-owned tech company has added a new level of complexity.

Google Classroom has developed a feature for teachers who want to work YouTube videos into their lesson plans. The educational hub is launching “interactive questions” that insert quiz breaks into scholastic YouTube content.
Interactive questions can turn “a passive watching experience into an engaging one,” according to an introductory post shared on the Google Workspace blog. The questions (which can be either open-ended or multiple choice) can be retried if students get them wrong, and teachers can replay a section of the video if they want to reinforce a particular lesson. When a set of interactive questions is completed, instructors receive a set of insights tailored to the performance of each student.
The Google blog post suggests that educators use interactive questions to identify which students need extra help and understand which subjects need extra lessons. School administrators must enable YouTube as an additional service for educators before the questions can be turned on.

The term “creator economy” now defines a multi-billion dollar industry occupied by influencers, agents, managers, artists, producers, and many other professionals. Despite the rapid growth of that sector, it remains undercounted by the U.S. Census Bureau. A report in The Washington Post reveals that the Bureau’s industry and occupation indexes include no mentions of the phrase “social media.”
The Bureau recognizes esoteric fields like “pickled onion manufacturing” and “canary raising,” but it pigeonholes social media creators into ill-fitting groups like “online video game playing” (which is defined as “data processing”) and “social media specialist” (which is more of a marketing title than a creator descriptor). An official with the Bureau of Labor Statistics told WaPo that creators could be classified as “public relations specialists” or “independent artists, writers and performers.”
This blind spot exists even though the global creator economy carries a $250 billion valuation. That figure is projected to...

It feels a little strange to say this in August, but the 2023 Streamy Awards are officially over, and they handed out a grand total of 50 awards to this year’s top creators.
This was the first year Tubefilter and dick clark productions held Streamys in the summertime, but the change of season didn’t mean everything changed: For the fourth time in a row, MrBeast took home Creator of the Year, and for the second time in a row, Kai Cenat snagged Streamer of the Year.
As for Show of the Year, that went to Michelle Khare and her daredevil series Challenge Accepted.
This year’s ceremony was hosted by MatPat, and featured dozens of presenters, including Dylan Mulvaney, Ryan Trahan, The Try Guys‘ Keith Habersberger and Zach Kornfeld, Smosh‘s Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, TikTok Npc streamer Pinkydoll, Colin and Samir, Dream, Michelle Khare, Anna Sitar, Austin Creed,...

The 2023 Streamy Awards honored the best in content creation on social media and Dylan Mulvaney took the trophy for Breakout Creator.
“I’m really shocked because I thought the only award I’d ever win was maybe a Tony Award but now I’m a musical theater gal with a Streamy,” the social media star said while accepting her award Sunday at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
Mulvaney went viral after receiving backlash from conservative media over promoting Bud Light.

San Francisco, July 30 (Ians) Apple has released the iOS 16.6 update that comes with over a dozen significant security improvements, two of which are currently being exploited by hackers.
The tech giant has shared details of over a dozen security flaws on its support page, ranging from categories including kernel, Find My, WebKit, and Apple Neural Engine.
According to Apple, two of the vulnerabilities were most likely actively exploited.
The exploited WebKit issue was first patched with Rapid Security Response iOS 16.5.1 (c). And the kernel flaw, which was most likely aggressively exploited, was probably fixed first with iOS 15.7.1.
However, Apple claims that iOS 16.6 addresses these vulnerabilities as well.
To manually install iOS 16.6, tap on Settings then General > Software Update. Then, tap Download and Install to kick off the update and keep your iPhone safe.
Meanwhile, Apple has released the iOS 17 public beta, which includes a new StandBy mode, personal voice feature and more.

When another user asked if users will now be called “Xers”, the tech billionaire said: “We will have no name.”

Jellysmack has made a multimillion-dollar investment in creator commerce platform Fourthwall.
Founded in 2019, Fourthwall bills itself as an “all-in-one monetization platform” where creators can design their own homepages, digital shops, and membership programs for fans. Jellysmack, meanwhile, partners with YouTube creators to re-optimize and distribute their videos across platforms like Snapchat and Facebook.
Jellysmack’s investment is part of Fourthwall’s third venture round. The companies are not disclosing exactly how much Jellysmack contributed, but say Fourthwall has now raised over $25 million total.
The duo did say that Jellysmack’s investment includes an exclusive partnership where it and Fourthwall will “bring new business opportunities in e-commerce and memberships directly to Jellysmack’s roster of creators.”

In 2022, Mkbhd bought a face mask from “everyday” fashion company Atoms. The brand was founded by Sidra Qasim and Waqas Ali in 2019, and face masks were only the third product it’d released in three years of operating. Its first two products were Model 000, a unisex pair of black shoes, and Model 001, a unisex pair of white shoes.
When Qasim and Ali realized Mkbhd had ordered from Atoms, they decided to hit him up.
“We reached out to him and said, ‘We are fans of you, and we love the way you explain products,'” Qasim told Fast Company. “‘We would love to see if there is a world where we can work together to design a sneaker.'”
Brownlee wasn’t immediately sold. He’d had other sneaker collab conversations before, but was put off because “there was not a lot of flexibility for actual input on the shoe,...

According to Apple’s Trade-In program, a perfectly working specced-out Mac Pro bought for more than 52,000 is now worth less than 1,000. That’s weird since you can still buy this machine from Apple for the same prices it was launched in 2019. Furthermore, according to rumors, the Intel-based Mac Pro is far from an obsolete product. This ultra-low value disrespects the customers.

Over the past year, Discord has been testing creator monetization through what it called “Premium Memberships“–a monthly paid tier similar to channel memberships and subscriptions on platforms like YouTube and Twitch.
Now, it’s renaming the feature from Premium Memberships to Server Subscriptions, and launching them to all eligible servers with owners based in the United States.
“Whether it’s a Discord server dedicated to the work of a certain content creator or a community that gathers around a particular topic, these server owners take their time to facilitate conversation, connection, and creativity in their environments,” Discord said in a blog post about Server Subscriptions. “Now, it’s time to support them back.”

Liza Minnelli has officially outlived Twitter’s nightmare of a double verification idea. First proposed by new overlord, excuse us, owner Elon Musk, double verification was an attempt by Musk to solve a problem he created in the first place. Early last week, Musk announced plans to charge everyone 8 a month for Twitter Blue, an arbitrary number he came up with after a public debate with author Stephen King. Among the perks of Twitter Blue, anyone who paid the 8 would be given a verified checkmark for their account — an idea...

As students go back to school, YouTube is equipping classrooms with some handy new features. The platform’s latest suite of educational upgrades includes a distraction-free player and a pair of new didactic formats: Courses and Quizzes.
The so-called “Player for Education” will remove ads, external links, and recommendations from YouTube videos. Other platforms, such as TikTok, have played around with distractionless interfaces. Unlike those experiments, YouTube’s streamlined player is designed to serve a scholastic purpose. It will be put into effect on “commonly used educational apps,” such as EDpuzzle, Google Classroom, Purdue University, and Purdue Global.
One of YouTube’s other new educational features seems like a direct attempt to compete with MasterClass. The online learning platform has recruited influencers like Marques Brownlee to serve as celebrity instructors, and YouTube is now strengthening its own creator-to-educator pipeline. Courses, which can be put behind a paywall or made available for free,...

Since refocusing its original programming strategy at the start of the year, YouTube has made a strong commitment to Black voices. Now, the platform has found another way to support creators of color: It has teamed up with the Black List to provide four TV writers with 40,000 apiece.
The writers who will receive the payouts will be chosen based on their ability to author “exceptional and authentic stories about the Black experience,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. A shortlist of 15 finalists will be selected, and from that group, YouTube will pick the four winners in February 2023. The chosen writers will use their 40,000 grants to create proofs of concept and develop pitches.
Along the way, YouTube and the Black List will offer creative support to the competition’s entrants. Each of the four winning fellows will be teamed up with a showrunner mentor over a period of six months.

Marques Brownlee firmly falls into the “Og” YouTuber category. The tech reviewer, also known as Mkbhd, first started posting tech videos to YouTube in 2009 as a young teen, sharing software tutorials and webcam-shot reviews of hardware like the remote that came with his Hp laptop.
Thirteen years later, Brownlee has one of the most popular tech channels on YouTube with 15.8 million subscribers and is a respected voice in the industry. In addition to reviewing the latest tech releases, Brownlee has brought on top executives like Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Elon Musk for interviews on his channel and podcast.
As the creator industry has expanded into new mediums and seen an influx of influencer brand deals, Brownlee said the majority of his revenue still comes from ads on YouTube, allowing him to be pickier about the brand deals he does accept.

VidCon, the marquee gathering for creators and influencers, was poised for a triumphant return to Anaheim after its two-year Covid-19 hiatus. And this year, TikTok — the once upstart platform that skyrocketed during the pandemic to more than 1-billion plus active users — was taking over YouTube’s spot as the conference’s title sponsor, promising the presence of top TikTok creators and an injection of new energy into the 12-year-old conference.
The creator economy has skyrocketed in the past few years, with the market size for consumers spending money on creators projected to grow from 9.8 billion to more than 18 billion, according to an October 2021 report from UTA. And with that growth has come sizable budgets from brands inking lucrative deals with talent and sustained interest from burgeoning creators seeking to monetize their followings and turn their content into a business. The TV upfronts are usually a dog-and-pony show where networks unveil their new content slates.
At YouTube’s Brandcast presentation for brands and agencies, held for the first time during upfronts week, the focus was on the gigantic video platform’s popular creators, its scale across internet TVs — and a new solution for marketers to set limits on ad frequency, addressing one of the most irritating aspects of ad-supported streaming services.
“The audiences you most care about are coming to YouTube to watch content,” CEO Susan Wojcicki told attendees at the event, held Tuesday evening at the Imperial Theatre in New York’s Times Square. She cited Nielsen’s estimate that YouTube overall reached 230 million people 18 and older in the U.S. in October 2021: “YouTube is the mainstream,” she said.
