On Radioactive, production designer Michael Carlin created a sense of enormous scope with a relatively modest budget, recreating period environments from five countries, for a story spanning more than a century.
Based on a graphic novel by Lauren Redniss, the drama tells the story of Marie Curie (Rosamund Pike), the pioneering scientist who changed the world with her discovery of radioactivity. Intercut with episodes from Curie’s life were scenes that spoke to the consequences of her work, staged at Hiroshima, Chernobyl and other destinations.
To carry the viewer through time and space, Carlin would transform sections of Budapest and Spain, to achieve a diverse assortment of looks.
But for the production designer, Radioactive is one of two dramas in the awards conversation this year, the other being The Mauritanian. Directed by Kevin Macdonald, the STX title tells the true story of Mohamedou Ould Salahi (Tahar Rahim), a man held...

Amazon Studios brings the story of Marie Curie to the screen with Radioactive starring Oscar-nominated actress Rosamund Pike as the pioneering scientist.
Directed by Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) and written by Jack Thorne, Radioactive is based on the 2010 graphic novel Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout by Lauren Redniss. The film adaptation follows Curie’s life and the legacy of scientific breakthroughs. At the same time, the story tells the darker consequences that came about after her amazing work.
Curie married fellow scientist Pierre Curie (Sam Riley) who went on to raise two daughters and change the face of science forever by jointly winning the Nobel for the discovery of radium in 1903. After the death of her husband, Curie continues her research and invites scandal when she has an affair with another prominent scientist, Paul Langevin (Aneurin Barnard). However, it is Marie’s commitment to science which prevails,...

Banish the dull images of test tubes and musty lecture halls when considering Radioactive (available on Amazon Prime starting July 24th). The biopic traces the career trajectory of Madame Marie Curie (a magnificent Rosamund Pike), the Polish immigrant born Maria Salomea Skłodowska who became the first person — and the only woman — to win two Nobel prizes. She shared the first in 1903, for discovering radium and polonium (named after her native country), with her French husband and fellow physicist Pierre Curie (Sam Riley). And the historical drama would be a dutiful thing,...

Madame Curie was part of Marjane Satrapi’s life well before Radioactive came along. In fact, she cannot remember a time when she didn’t know of Marie Curie, the Polish-French scientist who discovered two new elements on the periodic table, became the first person to win two Nobel Prizes, and coined the term “radioactivity” for the type of energy she hypothesized was emanating from the atom. It’s that kind of legacy Satrapi’s mother made sure her daughter was aware of while growing up in 1970s Tehran—a role model who, despite the disadvantages of living in the 19th century, could change the world by being “an independent woman and big and bad.”
Yet by making a biopic on Curie’s life, which becomes available on VOD later this week, Satrapi learned there was so much more to appreciate about the historic figure, including the parallels she saw...

Rosamund Pike brings pioneering scientist Marie Curie to life in late 19th century Paris in the U.S. trailer for the biopic “Radioactive.”
The trailer, which dropped Friday, starts with Pike in a lecture hall telling those assembled, “I want to tell you about radium, a most peculiar and remarkable element because it does not behave as it should.”
Pike’s determined Curie (born Marie Skłodowska) is seen next in a lab mixing chemicals and saying in a voiceover, “Science is changing and the very people who are running science are the people who believe the world is flat and I’m going to prove them wrong.”
She meets fellow scientist Pierre Curie, played by Sam Riley, and teams with him to prove the existence of what Curie called “radioactivity.” In 1903, the pair jointly won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their discovery, making her the first woman to earn the prize.

Rosamund Pike plays the physicist with dignity and froideur in this respectful drama that shows her brilliant discoveries – and their effects
The Geiger counter is ticking moderately for this forthright biopic of Marie Curie, born Maria Skłodowska: the historic double-Nobel winner in physics for the discovery of radioactivity, and then in chemistry for the discovery of radium and polonium. Screenwriter Jack Thorne has adapted Lauren Redniss’s much admired graphic novel about Marie and her husband and scientific partner Pierre Curie (to whom the Nobel committee at first wanted to confer the prize without Marie – unable to believe that a woman could be important in scientific discovery). The Iranian-born French film-maker Marjane Satrapi directs.
Marie is played with dignity and composure by Rosamund Pike, although with slightly more froideur than was perhaps the case. Sam Riley does a decent job of playing Pierre; Anya Taylor-Joy is Marie’s equally brilliant...

The Iranian-French filmmaker of Persepolis and Radioactive was speaking at the Glasgow Film Festival.
Iranian-French filmmaker Marjane Satrapi, the first woman to be nominated for an animation Oscar with her film Persepolis, has called for more female role models on screen.
“Women are half the population of the world so half the stories should be about us, but that’s not the case,” she said to an audience of rising writers and directors at the Glasgow Film Festival on Friday. “And the stories that are made about women have us as the cheated-on girlfriend or old and looking for love.

In the spring of 1975, long before he became one of the U.K.’s most respected producers, Paul Webster got his first job in the film industry working as a dispatch clerk in the basement of the Gate Cinema in Notting Hill, checking celluloid reels for damage before they could be fed into the projector. For his first job, he had to inspect the reel of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s “Fox and His Friends.”
“I picked it out very gingerly from the can…and the middle just fell out,” he told an audience in Rome during “X Rays on the UK,” a conversation hosted by Mia in cooperation with the BFI, the British Council, and the British Embassy in Rome, and moderated by Wendy Mitchell.
