Jeff Bridges is going back to the grid.
The 74-year-old actor told the Film Comment podcast (via The Playlist) that he is going to appear in “Tron: Ares,” the third film in the long-running sci-fi franchise that Bridges inaugurated with “Tron” in 1982 and reprised with “Tron: Legacy” in 2010. The new film stars Jared Leto as the titular character Ares, with Joachim Rønning (“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”) directing from a script by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne.
“I’m heading off this Saturday to play a part in the third installment of the ‘Tron’ story,” Bridges said. “Jared Leto is the star of this third one. I’m really anxious to work with him. I’ve admired his work.”
“Tron” is best known for pioneering the use of computer generated imagery, which was used to create the digital world of a video game after Bridges’ character, Kevin Flynn, is zapped inside one.

Game, set, now what to make of this match?
“Challengers,” a sexy, subversive, R-rated drama set in the world of tennis, easily took first place at a sluggish domestic box office this weekend with $15 million from 3,477 locations. On one hand, it’s a respectable result for an artsy movie aimed at discerning, adult audiences, but what keeps it from being a championship performance is that “Challengers” has a hefty $55 million budget (to say nothing of its marketing costs). The Amazon MGM Studios release will need strong word-of-mouth if it’s going to keep rallying — and next week brings Universal’s “The Fall Guy,” a Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt action-comedy that marks the start of summer blockbuster season. The competition only stands to get fiercer from here.

Warner Bros. in Talks to Land ‘Avengelyne’ With Margot Robbie Eyeing to Star, Tony McNamara to Write
The feature adaptation of “Avengelyne” from Olivia Wilde, Margot Robbie and “X-Men” producer Simon Kinberg is being set up at Warner Bros. The studio is close to finalizing a seven-figure film rights deal.
Robbie is eyeing the role of the titular angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters. “Deadpool” co-creator Rob Liefeld first brought the comic book character to life in 1995. “Poor Things” scribe Tony McNamara will pen the screenplay.
“This incredibly humbling journey to bring Avengelyne to life onscreen started through my relationship with super-producer Simon Kinberg who told me he had a perfect fit for the material and asked me to trust him,” Liefeld told Variety in an exclusive statement. “Next thing I’m meeting with Margot Robbie and Olivia Wilde and the connection was electric! For most of his career, Dwayne Johnson / The Rock has forged a reputation as a hardworking, dependable, likable actor with a boatload of charisma, leading superhero movies, actioners, and 4-quadrant friendly comedies. During his “Fast And Furious” days, Johnson butted heads with the franchise star Vin Diesel, reportedly over the latter’s lackadaisical schedule and unprofessional reputation. Yet, in an exclusive report from TheWrap, Johnson’s supposed sterling work ethic is being put into a different light.

"Mad Max: Fury Road" is one of the best movies of all time — according to /Film — a masterpiece of action cinema and a masterclass in visual storytelling. It is also a bit of a live-action cartoon. Like the best live-action directors, George Miller pulls inspiration from "Looney Tunes" as much as he does live-action movies in making his post-apocalyptic epic, with a sense of logic, physics, pacing, and fun that feels more outlandish than grounded.
But before the movie came out and became a big hit and an Oscar winner, it went through development hell for literal decades, only to go through actual hell during filming. Development took so long and suffered so many setbacks that Miller looked at alternatives to "Fury Road," including telling a completely different story in animated form. Indeed, we know that in 2009 — between two "Happy Feet" movies — Miller considered making an R-rated 3D "Mad Max" anime instead,...

Ostensibly a big-screen reboot of the 1980s television series of the same name, “The Fall Guy” is actually director and former stunt performer David Leitch’s love letter to both his wife, producer Kelly McCormick, and the undersung art of stunt work — only not always in that order.
Working closely with screenwriter and executive producer Drew Pearce, who previously scripted his “Fast and the Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw,” Leitch creates a clearinghouse of gobsmacking stunts (some truly record-breaking) while chronicling the tumultuous relationship between veteran stunt man Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) and first-time director Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). It’s quick-witted (and quick-footed) fun that bridges multiple generations of Hollywood moviemaking, melding together rom-coms and bombastic action into one blockbuster package.
Since making his screenwriting debut on Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3,” Pearce has developed an aptitude for conceiving stories that maintain a singular yet cohesive tonal balance.

Driver plays an idealistic architect and artist who is planning to rebuild a city that has fallen in part due to a corrupt mayor (Giancarlo Esposito). “Game of Thrones” alum Emmanuel stars as the mayor’s socialite daughter. The ensemble cast includes Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, D.B. While known for their blockbuster, saving-the-world narratives and often billion-dollar grossing earnings, given their costs and expectations, superhero films frequently have a reputation for the way studios often interfere in their making, the endless noting, the insistence of reshoots and sometimes, even the sidelining of the director (see “Thor: Dark World” filmmaker Alan Taylor who has said in the past that Marvel effectively locked him out of the editing process).

After years of making films in his native Japan, writer-director Ryusuke Hamaguchi found unexpected global success in 2021 with “Drive My Car.”
Adapted and expanded from short stories by Haruki Murakami, it’s an exquisite drama about a grieving theater director staging a multilingual “Uncle Vanya,” and his relationship with the pensive young woman employed to drive his cherry-red Saab.
Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, where Hamaguchi and co-writer Takamasa Oe won the Best Screenplay prize, “Drive My Car” went on to dominate the fall festival circuit. The film clocked up an astonishing four nominations at the 2022 Oscars, including Best Picture and a Best Director nod for Hamaguchi, and went on to win Japan’s first Oscar for Best International Film.
Hamaguchi’s latest film, “Evil Does Not Exist” is to some extent a response to that overwhelming acclaim. “I knew that I wanted my next work to be very...

"Fallout" is the smash success Amazon Studios has been waiting for. The show, based on the popular video game series of the same name, has become one of the biggest hits to date on Prime Video. Amazon has revealed that the series is now the second-most-watched show in the history of the streaming service, trailing only the mega-budgeted "Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."
According to Variety, "Fallout" was streamed by 65 million viewers during its first 16 days of release. Amazon made the choice to release the entire first season all at once on April 10. That's closer to the traditional Netflix binge model, rather than the week-to-week episode model that Prime Video has employed in recent years. That may have attracted more viewership in the early going, and that makes the show one of Prime Video's biggest hits ever out of the gate. As such, it's not surprising that...

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson recently made his grand return to wrestling with the WWE, but the star might be taking his "heel" persona a little too far these days.
There's absolutely nothing unusual in Hollywood when it comes to the delicate art of managing high-profile egos -- just ask Vin Diesel, who knows all too well from his days bumping heads with his famous co-star during the "Fast and Furious" saga -- but things seem to have escalated to a whole new level on the set of Amazon Studios' upcoming Christmas film "Red One." That's the latest scuttlebutt according to extensive reporting by Umberto Gonzalez of The Wrap, who paints an alarming picture of habitual lateness, deeply unprofessional behavior, and producing inexperience in several crucial roles. You can probably unpack that Pb&j, chips, and juice box: It sounds like “John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch” isn’t coming back to Netflix — or even to Comedy Central.
Mulaney has called the (excellent) Netflix variety series for children his “favorite thing I ever did,” a sentiment he echoed on “My Next Guest with David Letterman and John Mulaney” — the episode of Letterman’s long-form interview show premiered April 30, 2024 on Netflix.
Letterman asked Mulaney what that ranking suggests for the future.
“I loved doing it and, you know, Netflix was like, ‘Oh, cool, you gonna do standup again?’” Mulaney said.
Mulaney’s line got a laugh from the Chicago audience, but it didn’t sound like a joke. In the comic’s retelling, it is clear the streamer had pretty quickly moved on from “The Sack Lunch Bunch” and focused on the comedian’s bread and butter: stand-up.

Paramount Global’s ouster of CEO Bob Bakish did not reassure investors that there’s a favorable exit in store for the media conglomerate.
Shares of the company were down more than 4% in trading Tuesday morning to under $12/share, after Bakish’s exit was officially announced and he was replaced by three senior execs tasked with running Paramount Global — for now, anyway.
Wall Street analysts said the dismissal of Bakish, who was said to oppose Paramount Global’s prospective merger with David Ellison’s Skydance Media, along with the company’s refusal to take questions during its first-quarter 2024 earnings call Monday was evidence that an M&a deal is nearing. Paramount’s Q1 results were decent, as the company boosted Paramount+ streaming subs to more than 71 million and significantly narrowed streaming losses, while its TV group saw revenue up 1% thanks largely to the Super Bowl on CBS. The Disney+ era of "Star Wars" has by all accounts been a mixed bag, but upcoming murder mystery series "The Acolyte" seems like a promising addition to the universe's canon for a few key reasons. Among them is its dynamic and ambitious action, which has been hyped in pre-release press and is briefly on display in the show's first trailer. In it, warriors draw their lightsabers against an unseen force in the forest, two fighters face off in a wuxia-inspired showdown, and at one point a character even pulls a knife -- a rarity in this world of Force and saber-driven violence.
The "Acolyte" cast has admitted that one of the saga's most famous fights, the showdown between Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul in the imperfect yet vital prequel "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," was both a reference point during production and a bar they...

Amy Schumer was in the zone. This was in March, when she was filming on the street in Brooklyn for her upcoming movie “Kinda Pregnant,” a comedy about a woman who pretends to be knocked up for attention. In one take, Schumer emerged from a subway station while answering a phone call — and was interrupted by a stranger shouting at her from the sidewalk: “Fuck you, Amy Schumer! You’re a Zionist! You love genocide!”
Disruptions of the four-letter variety aren’t unusual in a raucous place like New York, though they’re usually less pointed. Schumer didn’t break character, refusing to stop working as the woman carried on. The actress finished the scene finally, packed up her stuff and went home to her husband and their 4-year-old son.
“It didn’t even raise my heart rate,” Schumer says over brunch at a cozy Brooklyn Heights tavern a couple days later.

When Taika Waititi released “Thor: Ragnarok” in 2017, the refreshingly comedic take on God Of Thunder was overwhelmingly well received, with fans loving the more irreverent take on the Norse God. Most critics and fans still consider it the best “Thor” film. However, the same cannot be said about 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder,” which left a bad taste in the mouth of the same franchise enthusiasts— its humor dialed up far too wacky and extreme for most.

Robert Downey Jr. called it “mind-blowing” to see Jeremy Renner up on his feet and celebrating at Chris Evans’ wedding last September. The Captain America actor tied the knot with Alba Baptista in a private ceremony in Cape Cod, Mass., and was surrounded by his longtime Marvel co-stars. Renner was hospitalized at the start of 2023 with near-fatal injuries after his snow plow ran him over.
As part of Chris Hemsworth’s new Vanity Fair cover, some of Evans’ Marvel co-stars remembered attending the wedding and being so proud of Renner’s recovery. Hemsworth attended the nuptials with his mother, who Downey called “a complete hoot. There’s a lot of her in him.”

After establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s hottest horror filmmakers with the 2022 mega-smash “Barbarian,” former “Whitest Kids U’Know” star Zach Cregger, seems ready to take an even bigger swing with his second directorial effort. Last year, it was announced that his spec script “Weapons” had sold to New Line in a massive bidding war. Since then, Cregger has pulled together an all-star cast for what’s being described as an interrelated, multistory horror epic that’s tonally in the vein of Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Magnolia.”
So far, Cregger has managed to attract the talents of Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, and Alden Ehrenreich, as well as the producing powers of Roy Lee and Miri Yun from Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Speaking in a statement on behalf of New Line, the company’s president and Cco, Richard Brener said of Cregger, “Zach proved...

It’s rare to find a star whose taste you can trust beyond their performance; the kind of actor who’s proven to be as discerning in their projects’ quality as they are in choosing rewarding individual roles. There simply aren’t that many Julia Louis-Dreyfuses or Carrie Coons out there, with either impeccable résumés or a Hall of Fame-worthy batting average. But Elisabeth Moss is among them.
As a TV lead, she’s steered some of the modern era’s greatest programs: seven masterful seasons of “Mad Men,” two staggering seasons of “Top of the Lake,” one stirring season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” (and a few more she carried on her back). Even her single misfire is minor: The 2022 Apple TV+ series “Shining Girls” is more intriguing and better than its (lack of) recognition. Plus, it arrived amid a smattering of strong film work that befit her premium brand.

The 49th Chaplin Gala took place on Monday, April 19 at Alice Tully Hall, honoring award recipient Jeff Bridges. The new "Star Wars" series "The Acolyte" knows the truth that we all figured out in 2016 but then apparently forgot: Manny Jacinto should be in everything.
The actor, who put in one of the funniest TV performances of the past decade as Jason Mendoza in "The Good Place," hasn't appeared on screen nearly often enough since that sitcom's end, but "The Acolyte" is about to change that. The upcoming Disney+ series features an impressive ensemble cast, including "Bodies Bodies Bodies" star Amandla Stenberg, "Logan" breakout Dafne Keen, and "The Matrix" series alum Carrie-Anne Moss. Then there's Jacinto, who plays Qimir, a former smuggler whose life has seemingly settled down since he started working in the trading world (per ComicBook.com).
A mention of Qimir's newly comfortable status in his character biography implies that the former criminal wasn't always well-off. Jacinto seems to confirm as much in a new interview with Total Film.

When the highly-anticipated blockbuster superhero film “Deadpool & Wolverine” slashes its way into theatres this July, fans can expect to see the nostalgic return of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and probably a whole ton of cameos, if the rumors and meta trailer jokes are any indication. However, as already reported, one character that viewers may have wanted to see but sadly won’t be in the anticipated blockbuster is Josh Brolin’s Cable, who previously appeared in “Deadpool 2.”
Brolin’s absence from the film is already known; he was never reported as part of the film, and there’s no trace of him in any of the recent trailers; he even joked that he had beef with “Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds.

Normally logistical issues like space rentals and permitting are meant to be invisible to the audience, left in the furthest background of any TV show. But Season 4 of “We’re Here” is as much about the struggles of making the series as it is about the drag performances the show’s queens put on in different parts of the United States. The HBO series not only introduced a new cast of queens this year but changed its filming approach so that it could go where it was needed most: the states imposing drag bans and making the pursuit of happiness difficult for their own LGBTQ communities.
The biggest shift, according to showrunner, director, and executive producer Peter LoGreco, was the amount of time that “We’re Here” spent in a given location. In past seasons, the series moved from state to state for each episode. But given how legislatively hostile the environments...

Daniel Radcliffe’s post-“Harry Potter” career has long been dominated by his theater work, both in New York and London. On April 30, he finally scored his first Tony nomination, for his role in the musical “Merrily We Roll Along.”
Radcliffe’s buzzy stage work began in 2007 with a run in “Equus” on both sides of the pond. He powered a delightful, blockbuster revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in 2011 (Grammy nomination), and since then, he has chosen an eclectic mix of projects, work where his name alone can often get challenging — or even just serious — work funded. Think the occasionally dense “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” the provocative “Privacy,” or the genre-bending experiment “The Lifespan of a Fact.” He’s long been an asset to the NY stage scene, and this morning’s recognition long-deserved.

Chris Hemsworth graces the cover of Vanity Fair’s May 2024 issue, where he revealed that he feels Marvel fans deserve another “Thor” movie after the whiff that was 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder.” The actor already admitted to GQ last year that his fourth standalone “Thor” movie was “too silly” for its own good, but the misstep appears to continue to haunt him.
“I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself,” Hemsworth told Vanity Fair. “I didn’t stick the landing.”
While Hemsworth has always been grateful for his career-defining role as Thor, he admitted to the publication that he grew frustrated with the character while playing him in four standalone Marvel films and additional “Avengers” movies.
“Sometimes I felt like a security guard for the team,” Hemsworth said. “I would read everyone else’s lines, and go, ‘Oh, they got way cooler stuff.

While Greta Gerwig’s Academy Award-nominated “Barbie” was the highest-grossing film of 2023, as we’ve seen over the course of the last year, it angered and irritated many. From Oliver Stone to Kelly Reichardt to Ruben Östlund, seemingly everyone had a take on “Barbie” they were willing to share. A whole lot of moviegoers this past weekend probably just became enthusiastic tennis fans, so it's important that they know just how well the sport lends itself to the type of thrill-a-minute drama on display throughout "Challengers." (Be sure to read /Film's review by Witney Seibold if you haven't yet.) As Zendaya's Tashi Duncan proves on multiple occasions, the art of being really good at hitting a ball with a racket can feel like an interpretive dance ... provided you have the right partner. Both players tune out the larger world in the heat of the moment and, in Tashi's words, "go somewhere beautiful" together. In that light, it's no wonder the actual filming of director Luca Guadagnino's latest movie naturally lent itself to moments of spontaneity and improvisation between the main trio of actors.

With hindsight being 20/20 and all, it may be a shock to learn that when Jane Fonda and producing partner Bruce Gilbert wanted to make a workplace comedy about three secretaries who decide to enact revenge on their tyrannical, chauvinist boss called "9 to 5," few people (see: men) in positions of power thought the film would be a success. And yet, the film -- which got its name after a grassroots organization of women fighting for workplace equality and fair pay (that is still around today) -- was a box-office smash, launched the mainstream career of Dolly Parton outside of music, and inspired both a TV adaptation and a Broadway musical.
Featuring interviews with Parton, Fonda, Lily Tomlin, countless others who worked on the film, the TV adaptation (Rita Moreno!), the Broadway musical (Allison Janney!), and activists from then and now, the documentary "Still Working 9 to 5" currently boasts a 93% critical score.

Tomorrow marks 30 years since the death of Ayrton Senna, the legendary Brazilian Formula One driver killed in a grisly crash on the track. CBS' "Family Affair" wasn't the biggest sitcom of its era, nor was it the most groundbreaking, but it popularized a found-family formula that would endure for decades after its original run. The series followed a lifelong bachelor, Bill (Brian Keith), whose lifestyle is interrupted by the sudden arrival of his three orphaned nieces and nephews. Clueless about parenthood yet suddenly the dad of three grieving kids, Bill recruited the help of several other characters throughout the series — most notably, his loyal British manservant, French (Sebastian Cabot).

UK genre sales specialist Jinga Films has boarded husband-and-wife team Brian and Laurence Avenet-Bradley’s sci-fi horror Protos for world sales, ahead of Cannes.
The feature is written by cult horror novelist Simon Clark and produced by Mike Sharrak and the filmmakers for their US outfit Avenet Images.
It is set in a dystopian future and stars Anja Akstin, Fred Thomas Jr, Ricky Herrera and Trista Robinson as death row inmates used like lab rats by a private company seeking to revolutionise the correctional system using memory implants. Corey Landis also stars as the CEO in charge of the experiment.

After revealing behind the scenes details about how he helped bring an all-star group of musicians together to make the Grammy-winning smash hit charity single “We Are the World” in the Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop,” Lionel Richie recently spoke to IndieWire about which of the participants he knows have watched the movie, and are still reeling from the down-to-the-wire recording session.
“Huey Lewis sat next to me while I’m watching the premiere, and he leaned over to me, and he said, ‘I don’t think we’re going to make it,’” the “American Idol” judge said at an event celebrating the reveal of the current season’s Top 10 finalists. “I said, ‘Huey, it’s 39 years ago. It’s been a success.’ But how we set it up, he was a nervous wreck.”

Last month, non-profit group Good Energy launched what it called a Bechdel Test for Climate Change, a simple set of criteria designed to determine if it was clear climate change was present in a film. The real Allison Bechdel even endorsed it.
Good Energy, in launching its “Climate Reality Check,” said just three movies nominated for Oscars this year passed the test’s two simple rules: “Climate change exists” and “a character knows it.” Now in a more extensive study, the group analyzed 250 of the top grossing movies between 2013 and 2022.
Global warming has been with us for a while now, but only 12.8 percent — 32 of the 250 films studied in that time span — even passed the first criteria saying that climate change exists. Only 24 films, or 9.6 percent, passed both criteria of the test.
