Dick offers to assist her to avoid the unwanted marriage, and they travel to London together, with Alice disguised as a boy. Churlton pursues them, and, after several narrow escapes, Dick is captured by the royal guards and sentenced to be hanged. On the scaffold, Dick is told by his friend, Tom King, who has taken the hangman's place, that the crowd is sympathetic; and Dick makes his escape, riding his horse to York. Dick finds the house where Alice is being held prisoner, kills Churlton, and escapes to France with Alice, whom he marries. Dick gives up his profession and settles down to family life.

The Frog becomes a widow's adopted son, while the Dope falls in love. When Rose almost falls for a millionaire, Tom overcomes his murderous jealousy and, renouncing his past, declares his love. After the Patriarch dies, Tom and Rose marry.

Her daughter, Princess Anne, however, loves commoner Freddie Granton, the king's secretary, and refuses to marry her mother's political choice, the foppish Prince William. After the queen leaves for a promotional tour of America, a long-fomenting revolution erupts on the night of Anne's birthday ball, and the palace is bombed. The king agrees to meet with the revolution's leader and, after hearing his cause, promises him that if the revolutionaries lay down their arms, he will oust General Northrup, the powerful, dictatorial premier. After some manipulation and collaboration, the king rids the country of Northrup, while insuring better living conditions for his subjects. With the uprising squelched and the queen back from America, Anne's wedding to William proceeds as planned, though under protest from the princess. Minutes before the ceremony, however, the rejuvenated king, in final defiance of his wife, secretly marries Anne and Freddie himself and arranges for their passage to common freedom.
- In return for money and medical aid for his invalid mother, struggling author Robert Sandell agrees to subject himself to experiments by Dr. Lamb, who claims he is trying to extend the human lifespan. Despite warnings from the doctor's wife and a hunchbacked assistant, Robert allows himself to be strapped to an operating table, whereupon he learns the true nature of the surgeon's experiments: To prove the theory of evolution by devolving his human subjects into an approximation of their simian ancestors. However, before Dr. Lamb can proceed, the hunchback un-cages another victim, an ape-man, who crushes Dr. Lamb to death.

Becka Lipvitch renounces his love when Pug Malone advises her that their marriage would endanger his future. John becomes engaged to Josephine, Van Horn's ward, and rejects the boxing ring for an engineering career. While returning from Europe, Van Horn is drowned when his ship sinks; Josephine and Rantoul, finding consolation in each other's love, are rescued and are married. Meanwhile, John rescues Becka from Flash, a nightclub owner and narcotics peddler, and they are reconciled.
- Buddy rescues Bonnie Norton and is rewarded with a job on her father's ranch. When he is captured by Nachez' outlaw band and is left tied to a train track, he is rescued by McCune, another bandit. They both escape, and though Buddy is mistakenly identified with the outlaws, he vindicates himself by capturing Nachez.

- Stephen Verrill dies, leaving the deed to a valuable gold mine to his wife and child. Verrill's widow, planning to establish a company to operate the mine, sails aboard the steamer Caribee bound for New York. With the aid of Allen, the mate, Cuttle, a notorious trader, scuttles the ship on a wild coastline. As the lifeboat drifts towards a small island, it is overturned by a giant octopus, and the baby is washed ashore, the mine deed tied to her neck. As Verrill apparently has no heirs, his property reverts back to the state and Cuttle buys it. Ten years later, Tom Ross, the son of the Caribee 's captain, determines to prove his father's innocence and returns to the South Sea island where he finds Mimi Verrill, now grown to adulthood. After obtaining proof of his father's murder, Tom returns home with Mimi where they fight to reclaim the mine. After many arduous confrontations with Cuttle, the villain is devoured by a shark, Mimi regains her claim to the mine and marries Tom.
- Danny Terry, a wild-animal expert for a scientific magazine, goes to the Mariposa Islands and pretends to be a white savage to put over a hoax on a rival magazine's expedition, guided by Professor Atwater. In New York, he is placed on exhibition at a "jungle ball" given by Mrs. Atwater to celebrate the betrothal of her daughter to Howard Kipp. Terry's editor tries to expose the hoax, but Terry has fallen in love with Ysabel and refuses to disgrace her further; meanwhile, Ysabel breaks her engagement upon finding her fiancé with another girl. Though she knows Terry is a fake, she goes away with him, and they declare their mutual love. Terry convinces his pursuers that the "savage" has escaped, and as himself he finds happiness with Ysabel.
- An aristocrat who was raised in Spain returns to the United States and falls in love with a plumber.
- Laura Bedford marries poor taxi driver Jim Maberne, and her chum Claribel marries wealthy Richard Smith-Blanton. When the two women accidentally meet sometime later, Laura eagerly accepts Claribel's invitation to an artists' ball. Because of her poverty, Laura is obliged to obtain a ball gown on approval. At the ball she repulses the advances of Smith-Blanton. When her children ruin the dress the next day, Laura takes her husband's savings to pay for it. Jim discovers the loss and orders Laura out. When, later, he comes upon her struggling against Smith-Blanton, Claribel tells him the whole story. Jim gives Smith-Blanton a beating and takes his wife home.
- Steve, newly arrived in Trieste, saves Tina from being shot in her own night-club. She engages him as a bodyguard cum detective, giving him a list of names and a map she has inherited. Steve discovers that her father was blackmailing a group of traitors and the map locates money hidden in Somaliland with evidence of their guilt. Having contacted all the names, they leave for Africa taking Nadia in place of her father who is killed. Michael tries to persuade her to join him against the others and escapes when she refuses. Later, in the caves he re-appears and in the ensuing fight falls over a cliff edge after the money. Steve throws the incriminating document after him. Melodrama involving a treasure hunt and an old blackmail system during the war, which is cleared up by a bodyguard.

- June Tolliver, whose family has long feuded with the Falins, falls in love with engineer John Hale when he comes to their mountain town. John sends her to the city to be educated with the promise of marriage when she returns. Because John is appointed deputy he tries to remain neutral, but he finds the Falins supporting him when June's Uncle Rufe is accused of murder. June is called to testify during his trial but does not perjure herself for Rufe's sake. To prevent a Tolliver from being hanged, Jud Tolliver has Rufe shot. John is also injured, but June's pleading finally brings an end to the feud.
