This review of “Cane Fire” was first published May 20, 2022.
Several years in the making, the documentary “Cane Fire,” from longtime editor turned director Anthony Banua-Simon, sees the light of day as native Hawaiians on social media platforms are urging the public at large to stop traveling to the state at a time when resources of all kinds, from water to housing, have become alarmingly scarce or impossibly unaffordable for the working-class locals, particularly the indigenous Hawaiian population.
An indispensable watch, Banua-Simon’s first feature focuses on the island of Kauaʻi and the history of its exploitation as a colony, which endures under the guise of statehood. First desired for its fertile soil (for sugar cane and pineapple plantations that employed underpaid and overworked migrants from Asia), the island later became a sought-after Hollywood location and, eventually, a paradisiacal tourist playground for the rich.

While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.
Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.
Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

Chicago – She is the oldest daughter of movie legend Charlie Chaplin, from his fourth marriage to Oona O’Neill, but she also was a spectacular actress in her own right. She is Geraldine Chaplin, and she was honored at the 52nd Chicago International Film Festival, and was president on a film jury for the fest.
Chaplin was born in Santa Monica, California. When she was eight years old, her father and mother took her on a trip to Europe, and while there Charlie Chaplin was exiled through government order from America. The family then settled in Switzerland, and Geraldine eschewed college for dance, and studied in England and Paris. She reluctantly left that art, and turned to modeling. That is how director David Lean discovered her and cast her as Tonya in the classic “Doctor Zhivago” (1965).

Julie Andrews, Max von Sydow and Richard Harris bring James Michener's true saga to life -- but it's the story of the destruction of paradise. Warner Home Video gained distribution rights to movies owned by Agamemnon Films, which is controlled by the estate of Charlton Heston. Among the titles to be released in March 2011 are Charlton Heston Presents the Bible, a four-part TV documentary hosted by Heston who takes viewers to key sites in the Holy Land. Also making their debut in March are Mother Lode, a late career film in which Heston was cast against type as a villain and the little-seen Antony and Cleopatra, which Heston starred in and directed in 1972. If that isn't enough for his fans, Heston's 1970 film The Hawaiians (aka Master of the Islands) is being released this month. Now how about Counterpoint, 55 Days at Peking and Number One? We're getting close...
