Many people may not know this, but before Steven Seagal’s action movie heyday, he worked as a martial arts instructor and choreographer. Most famously, he was super agent Michael Ovitz’s martial arts teacher. Ovitz, notoriously, thought he could make anyone a movie star, and proved it by securing Steven Seagal a movie deal at Warner Bros, where he made Above the Law… and the rest was history.
Another guy Steven Seagal trained was Sean Connery, who was one of Ovitz’s first major clients. The agent paired Connery up with Seagal to get him into shape for the unofficial James Bond movie, Never Say Never Again. Connery was fifty-two at the time and had a couple of fight sequences in the film, so Seagal was brought in to whip him into shape. One day, while sparring, Seagal broke Connery’s wrist. The urban legend is that Connery did something that made him angry,...

A few months ago, a terrific book about the golden age of action stars called “The Last Action Heroes” came out (buy it here). Written by Nick De Semlyen, the book takes a very affectionate look at all of the icons we grew up with in the 80s and 90s, with one notable exception. Steven Seagal does not come off well in the book – at all. One of the wildest stories from the book recounts a time when Seagal grew outraged over the fact that a meeting room he wanted was being occupied by the legendary Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
The two actors, who would have been in their late sixties then, were participating in a read-through for their hit comedy Grumpy Old Men. According to the book, the vibe in the room was light, with the two old pros cracking up their director, Daniel Petrie and assembled guests.

Welcome to this week’s review of Tna Wrestling, the latest episode under the return of the Tna branding! Let’s get into the review and see what went down…
Match #1: Chris Sabin def. John Skyler The following is courtesy of tnawrestling.com:
Chris Sabin looks to humble John Skyler in tonight’s opening contest! As Sabin is making his entrance, we learn that this match has been sponsored and presented by Sabin’s X-Division Title challenger at No Surrender, Mustafa Ali. Hotch distracts Sabin at ringside, allowing Skyler to send him crashing into the steel ring steps. Sabin creates separation with a German suplex, then builds momentum with a Ddt. Sabin hits a running kick for two. Hotch trips up Sabin from the outside but the follow-up spear from Skyler is not enough to keep him down. Sabin hits the Cradle Shock to win.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Match #2: Tasha Steelz def.

Match #1: Nic Nemeth def. Trey Miguel The following is courtesy of tnawrestling.com:
After defeating Zachary Wentz last week, Nic Nemeth must now lock horns with another Rascal in Trey Miguel! Nemeth clotheslines Miguel over the top rope to the floor. Wentz provides a momentary distraction, allowing Miguel to take him out with a dive. Back in the ring, Miguel rakes the eyes, then drives Nemeth shoulder-first into the steel ring post. Nemeth creates separation with a mid-air dropkick to counter Miguel’s springboard. Nemeth delivers repeated elbow drops but Miguel kicks out. Wentz trips up Nemeth in the corner and the referee ejects him from ringside. Miguel soars with the Meteora off the distraction but it’s not enough.

Warner Bros – circa 1986. A bunch of powerful, suit-wearing studio execs are summoned to a studio lunch like no other. They’re set to observe an Aikido demonstration by a superstar trainer named Steven Seagal, previously known as the fight choreographer who broke Sean Connery’s wrist while training him for Never Say Never Again. By the end of the demonstration, mangled stunt men lie on the floor while a blood-stained Steven Seagal walks away with a movie deal that – unbeknownst to all – will establish him as perhaps the hottest action star of the early nineties, only for his career to collapse under the weight of his own ego eventually. But, in the early days, the sky was the limit for Seagal, and his first movie, Above the Law, is an impressive big-screen introduction to one of the most enigmatic movie stars of his time.

Every now and then, you come across a celebrity video that has fallen into obscurity that is well worth (re)discovering. Well, dear reader, this week, we’d like to present to you a video of Steven Seagal selling you wine — straight from the depths of 1990. And yes, it is far better than that same year’s Hard to Kill.
The video, which was part of Celebrity Guide to Wine, also features Seagal’s then-wife Kelly LeBrock, who appears coming home late, apologizing for the traffic. She asks, “The usual?” to Steven Seagal before reaching for a bottle of wine that she continuously, uh, handles, like somebody who has never held a bottle of wine before. “This better be good,” he says – and you know just what he means…Hey, even now-washed-up actors could be subtle once in a while…

Actor Steven Seagal has called himself a “diplomat” during an appearance on Russian state media, defending his visit to a prisoner of war camp where Ukrainian inmates were last month burned to death.
Having been a Russian citizen since 2016 and said Russian President Vladimir Putin is one of the world’s greatest leaders, the 1990s action star, said he went to the prison to view “evidence” of what had happened, reports aceshowbiz.com.
He also repeated Kremlin propaganda that Kyiv was to blame.
“I know a little bit about those things. I can tell you, one billion per cent, it wasn’t a bomb that could blow from the ground floor up. You could see where a missile came in from the outside and blew everything up,” the star said.
He continued, “As I have said, I am a diplomat and I pride myself on being a pretty good diplomat...

1990 was a big year for Steven Seagal. After blasting his way to fame in Above the Law, Seagal had two movies open to boffo box office in 1990. First there was Hard to Kill, which paired him with future wife Kelly LeBrock, while 1990's Marked For Death, the only film he made away from Warner Bros in his heyday, was an even bigger cult success. To this day, it's considered one of the pony-tailed one's greatest films, with it pairing him against a Rastafarian…...

The Premium VOD debut of United Artists’ “Bill & Ted Face the Music” topped charts from the moment it debuted August 28. As a mid-budget title that’s thriving at $19.99, it could be as important as “Tenet” in determining the shape of movie distribution. “Bill & Ted” didn’t see much theatrical play, but given its day-and-date debut it also didn’t have the option. About 1,000 independent theaters did play the title, where by our estimate it grossed around $1.1 million, or around $1,000 per theater.
That’s not a lot, but it’s better than Searchlight’s theater-only flop “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Based on those two performances, UA made the right move: Searchlight devoted marketing spend to a disappointheatrical release that now must wait until November before it can play VOD.
“Bill & Ted” was first on all three possible charts. “Fatima” (Picturehouse), the other new PVOD entry, appeared on two.

HBO Max has a lot to offer in August, with titles to look forward to including the premiere of a brand new Seth Rogen movie called “An American Pickle” on Aug. 6, and Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman film “The Dark Knight” out Aug. 1.
The nascent streaming service also shares content with HBO, with new films coming like “Jojo Rabbit” out Aug. 1, “Birds of Prey” out Aug. 15, “Richard Jewell” out Aug. 8, and “Queen & Slim,” out Aug. 22. The upcoming series “Lovecraft County,” which mixes fact and fantasy and takes place in 1950s Jim Crow America, arrives Aug. 16.
Leaving throughout the month include, tragically, all eight “Harry Potter” films, which will be gone after Aug. 25. Other absolute classics like “Good Will Hunting,” “You’ve Got Mail,” and both “Kill Bill” movies will be gone after Aug. 31, so watch them while you can.
Below is the full list of everything coming and going in August.

HBO Max is continuing to pull from Warner Bros.’ incredible back catalogue of movies, with August bringing a huge number of new titles to the streaming service. With over 130 new pieces of content, the list of upcoming arrivals encompasses classic films of all kinds, from Oscar winners to comedies, horrors to family pics and, of course, tons of blockbusters.
A highlight for many users will probably be the glut of Batman films coming to HBO Max at the start of the month. Every cinematic outing for the Caped Crusader from 1989’s Batman starring Michael Keaton to 2008’s The Dark Knight with Christian Bale (which just celebrated its 12th anniversary this weekend) are going up on the site. Sticking in Gotham, both seasons of Harley Quinn are also coming to HBO Max, following their original release on DC Universe.

It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.
Over the years HBO (and by the transitive property its new HBO Max streaming offshoot) has grown accustomed to debuting a buzzworthy new TV show or limited series every couple of months. For August 2020 that will almost certainly be Southern Gothic horror series Lovecraft Country. The J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele-produced thriller arrives on August 14 on HBO and HBO Max.
Other strong HBO Max originals arriving in August include the documentary Class Action Park (release date Tbd), Seth Rogen-starring comedy An American Pickle (Aug. 6), and finales for I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Doom Patrol, and Perry Mason.
Of course, HBO Max is designed to house much of WarnerMedia’s content across many mediums. That means some recent movies on note like Jojo Rabbit (Aug. 1), Richard Jewell (Aug. 8), and Birds of Prey (Aug.

Actor Steven Seagal’s wallet just took a hit, with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday announcing the former action star will pay a $314,000 settlement for “unlawfully touting” a cryptocurrency investment.
According to the SEC, the “Above the Law” actor received $250,000 in cash and another $750,000 worth of Bitcoiin2Gen (B2G) to promote B2G on his social media accounts. The government agency found that the actor warned his followers not to “miss out” on B2G’s initial coin offering — which is essentially an Ipo but for cryptocurrencies — and issued a press release dubbed “Zen Master Steven Seagal Has Becoe the Brand Ambassador of Bitcoiin2Gen.”
Seagal failed to comply with federal anti-touting laws, according to the SEC, by promoting the coin without disclosing the “nature, scope and amount of compensation received in exchange for” his promotion.

Welcome to this week’s Impact Wrestling review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have the fall-out of Hard To Kill, with Tessa Blanchard making history as the first female World Champion at this level of fame. Chikara and Lucha Underground have done this as well, but to lesser effect. Okay, let’s get to it.

Welcome to this week’s Impact Wrestling review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and I wrote some comments on Disqus today. I got three negative comments and I’m a sad guy. Wait…I don’t care. You can type in my name and see my comments on…certain websites. Some dink took issue with me hyphenating “every-thing”. You’re supposed to hyphenate that word. It’s a compound word. Every-thing isn’t a real word. It’s a lazy word. The English language is filled with lazy words. I should know, because I’m about to use a lot of them right now. Anyway, we’ve got the build for Hard To Kill coming to a boil. Tessa Blanchard might be a World Champion very soon. Whether you’re into that or not, that’s a big piece of history that might be on the horizon.

– “So why did you become a yakuza?”
– “Do you need a reason to become a yakuza in this country?”
When Shoichi Yomi (Hiroyuki Watanabe) takes on a kamikaze mission to eradicate a rival crime faction single-handedly, it ends tragically with him in a coma, tied to a hospital bed.
10 years later, Yomi wakes up to everyone’s surprise, only to see that the power lines have shifted, and new alliances formed. He seeks out his old buddy Eto (Tatsuo Yamada), but it becomes clear soon that too many people would have preferred for him to stay comatose. Yomi is banished to Hiroshima on some false pretence, where he starts putting together a comeback and revenge plot to settle the debt once and for all.
“Shinjuku Outlaw” is an deceptively ordinary Miike film. It’s one of Miike’s numerous V-Cinema (straight to video) entries that deals its cards fast and dirty.

Among Steven Seagal’s dubious achievements in the last decade are his recently granted Russian citizenship and this trailer for Contract To Kill, which is not, as you might expect, a straight-to-dvd release. No, Contract To Kill—not to be confused with Hard To Kill, which also starred Seagal—will have a proper theatrical release but will also be available on iTunes (in case your local cineplex isn’t screening it). The subject of Seagal’s latest film is virtually the same as all the other, triptych-titled works. The sluggish martial arts star plays a CIA/DEA agent named John Harmon, who teams up with Russell Wong and a beautiful distraction (Jemma Dallender) to investigate Muslim terrorists.
The trailer features Seagal puffing out his lines in between halfheartedly chopping guys in the neck, but remember—this is just another day at the office for him and his character. Speaking of...

The Kremlin announced Thursday that the Russian president has signed a decree welcoming the American action star, best known for a string of ’90s movies including “Above the Law,” “Hard to Kill” and “Under Siege.” “In compliance with Item A of Article 89 of the Russian Federation Constitution, the President issued the order to accord Russian Federation citizenship to Steven Frederic Seagal, born April 10, 1952, in the United States of America,” the Kremlin said in a brief official statement. The overture may be out there, but it has yet to reach Gillian Anderson.
Last month, Fox chairman and CEO Dana Walden was bullish about the prospect of more X-Files episodes, saying that not only have there been “conversations” with series creator Chris Carter as well as Anderson and co-lead David Duchovny about a potential Season 11, but, “I believe everyone is on board.”

Is "Empire" big enough for two Cookies?!
In a telltale sign that the Fox drama plans to spend more time exploring their lead characters’ origin stories in Season 3, producers are searching for an African-American actor and actress to play “Teenage Loretha” (aka Cookie) and “Teenage Lucious,” respectively. It’s not clear exactly what age the young couple will be, but, per the casting notice, candidates should be “18 to play younger.”
In its first two seasons, Empire regularly flashed back to Cookie and Lucious’ early years as twentysomethings but...

Gotham is giving one of its emerging villains an extreme makeover and a promotion.
TVLine has learned exclusively that when the Fox drama returns this fall with Season 3, little Ivy Pepper will have transformed into big, bad Poison Ivy. As a result, Clare Foley — who has intermittently appeared as the plant-obsessed orphan during the series’ first two seasons — will not be returning.

Quick, somebody slap me! I think I just felt a little pang of sympathy for Wayward Pines‘ maniacally monstrous leader Jason Higgins.

Don’t get it twisted: I didn’t put aside my disdain for the lil’ dictator because he had to choke the life out of the woman who raised him — that was a necessary evil to save the last remaining members of the human race. Rather, I wanted someone to momentarily dry his tears because Pam shot...

In tonight’s episode (9/8c on Fox), Hope Davis’ character officially locks up her nomination as the series’ most disturbing character — and we’ve got an exclusive video clip (embedded above) to prove it.
“Let’s put the ‘pro’ in procreation!” she grins ominously to a classroom of young teenagers, before turning their attention to what looks like a twisted hybrid of Candyland and a 1950s “How to Make a Baby” pamphlet. (Did we really need Pilcher’s...

Grim treats, mining suspense and urgency from intensely plotted dual timelines of brutal criminality. A must for fans of rumpled, cynical, bitter detectives. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

What’s the biggest movie — by a long shot — in Denmark at the moment? It’s not Zootopia or Batman v Superman. It’s A Conspiracy of Faith, the third in the series based on Jussi Adler-Olsen’s internationally bestselling Department Q crime novels… and that’s in its sixth week of release. Danish moviegoers love brooding, tenacious Copenhagen cop Carl Mørck so much that they made the first two films,The Keeper of Lost Causes (Kvinden i buret) and The Absent One (Fasandraeberne), among the biggest hits the country’s film industry has ever seen.
