Today, Paramount+ announced that Academy Award winner Holly Hunter will star in the upcoming original series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy.
The series will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the galaxy’s most legendary places. Produced by CBS Studios, it will begin production later this summer.
“It feels like we’ve spent our entire lives watching Holly Hunter be a stone-cold genius,” said co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. “To have her extraordinary authenticity, fearlessness, sense of humor, and across-the-board brilliance leading the charge on Starfleet Academy is a gift to all of us and to the enduring legacy of Star Trek.”

It has not been an easy week. At the start of the week, we had our editorial meeting here at HitFix, as we do every Monday, to talk about both the week ahead and longer-term projects as well. For fairly obvious reasons, there was a fair amount of talk about Valentine's Day content, and I mentioned a few different ideas that I might write about, including one that I'll end up publishing at some point about Steve Martin. But even as I pitched a few ideas, I found myself uncomfortable with the entire idea of writing about romantic films right now. Honestly, I was hoping to spend this week with my head down and then just sail right through this weekend without writing about love at all, because for the first time in my adult life, I am no longer sure what I think about it. After all, I was with my wife for 14 years.

Lasse Hallström has become an expert at making mom-jeans movies, nonthreatening pictures in which headstrong women find love just when they think it's too late (Once Around), take the upper hand with their cheating husbands (Something to Talk About), and turn small, French villages topsy-turvy by opening chocolate shops (Chocolat). But the tragedy and the glory of mom-jeans is that they're kind of comfy, at least when they're well engineered. Hallström's The Hundred-Foot Journey, in which the prim proprietress of a trés chic restaurant in the French countryside learns life lessons from a raucous family of Indian emigrees, is almost embarrassingly enjoyable, despite the fact that — or maybe because — it's ridiculous in a shi...

The Nicholas Sparks Limited Edition DVD Collection is another of those set releases that is the best and worst of all possible worlds. Serious fans are going to be happy to get collectible postcards, and a “personal letter from Nicholas Sparks,” but they already own the movies, and the discs don’t have any new bonuses.
On the other hand, if you don’t already own the movies (or only have one or two), this is a great collection to bring them all home at once. While there aren’t new bonuses, and the films aren’t remastered, or otherwise jazzed up with new treatments, most of the films include some solid bonuses anyway, and even the aging Message in a Bottle looks pretty good.
The Collection includes:
Message in a Bottle A Walk to Remember The Notebook Nights in Rodanthe Dear John The Lucky One Safe Haven

Director Zack Snyder has added Oscar-winning character actress Holly Hunter to the cast of the still untitled Superman/Batman movie that Warner Bros. has wisely pushed back to May 6, 2016. He has also cast muscled action players Callan Mulvey ("300: Rise of an Empire") and Tao Okamoto ("The Wolverine"). Departing from the established DC canon (something Marvel rarely does), all three actors will play characters newly created for the film. Snyder said he has long wanted to work with the Oscar-winning actress ("The Piano") ever since he met her. She recently played a SAG-nominated supporting role in Sundance Channel's "Top of the Lake" for her "Piano" director Jane Campion. She was also nominated for "Broadcast News," "The Firm," and "Thirteen." She can do comedy (the Coens' "Raising Arizona") or drama (Lasse Hallstrom's "Once Around"). Snyder met Australian actor Callan on "300" sequel "Rise of an Empire." Callan also starred in "Zero Dark Thirty" and appears.

With filming for Zack Snyder's follow-up to Man of Steel set to being very soon, casting for the movie has obviously been stepped up. Just now, Warner Bros. issued a press release announcing that three new actors have been cast in the movie for various roles. Come inside to check out all the details!
If you're hoping for information on who they'll be playing...you may be a little disappointed. All the press release really says is that they were cast for characters created specifically for the film. Meaning they don't already have a comic book counterpart. Either way, it's really nice to hear some sort of official information on this film, considering how quiet things have been lately on the upcoming DC Superhero flick:

There's something about the Boston accent in cinema that forces actors to feel like they really have to nail it. Of course, there are movies set in other cities (Chicago or New York, for example) featuring normally straight-voiced actors straining to sound like they're from the area. But it's not as seemingly mandatory as it is with a Boston-set movie.
If a movie takes place in Boston — and an increasing amount of them do — it's apparently federal law for an actor to wind up and take a wild swing at their best McLaugh from Southie. Some knock it straight over the Monster, while others Buckner the chance and watch helplessly as Ray Knight frantically scores the winning run. (We'll have to wait and see about Friday's "The Heat.")
Let's take a look at the best of the best, and the wuhhhssst of the wuhhhhsst.* (*To be read with a terrible Boston accent.

Going back all the way to Once Around, Lasse Hallström has been, for many, a hit or miss director. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules and Chocolat have entered a special realm for a lot of people, but The Shipping News, The Hoax, and Dear John are perhaps in other categories.
Hitting theaters on March 9th, Hallström is now teamed up with Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. From the popular novel, and adapted for the screen by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours), the film seems to have a lot of ticks in the pro column before we even need to see anything.
The new trailer gives us even more to sink our teeth into though, as McGregor and Blunt look to deliver the kind of quirk they’ve become known for. Check it out, and mark your calendars.
