Donald Petrie's "Grumpy Old Men" was released in theaters on Christmas Day in 1993, serving as that year's "take your parents to see it" film. Prior to "Grumpy Old Men," the film's two stars, Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, had appeared in five films together, including "The Fortune Cookie," Neil Simon's "The Odd Couple," "Kotch," "The Front Page," and "Buddy Buddy." The two were so well known for their chemistry, they were often considered one of comedy's great, prevailing duos. To this day, they are often mentioned together, and the two are buried not too far apart in the same cemetery in Westwood, CA.
While Lemmon and Matthau worked together regularly throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, there was a notable gap in their shared résumé. From 1981 until 1993, the pair did not work in tandem — even though they both appeared in Oliver Stone's 1991 film, "JFK," they had no scenes together.

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Growing up in Philadelphia, I've experienced my fair share of harsh winters. The blizzard of 1996 stands out, but there were a number of other rough years for a while too. Although, when I moved to Chicago a few years ago, I experienced a whole new level of frigid chills. It got even worse when a polar vortex delivered such sub-zero temperatures and precipitation that people were advised not to leave their houses since even the slightest bit of exposed skin could get frostbite within minutes. Seriously, despite this year being relatively tame in comparison, midwestern winters are no joke. And someone else who knew this was Walter Matthau.

Plenty of people still remember Sophia Loren and there are many reasons why, since she is a very popular and award-winning actress that was at one time extremely prominent and was known to take on multiple projects per year. For some of us, one of the most memorable times was when she starred opposite Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon in Grumpier Old Men, but for the older generations, it’s likely that she’s remembered from her younger days when she was tearing up the screen and winning awards left and right for her talents. Just to remind folks at this time

What becomes a legend most?
Well, in the case of the Oscar-winning 86-year-old Sophia Loren, a terrific role in the new Netflix movie “The Life Ahead,” which premiered on Nov. 13 to rave reviews. The film is also a valentine from her youngest son Edoardo Ponti who co-adapted and directed the drama based on Romain Gary’s 1975 novel “The Life Before Us.”
Loren plays Madame Rosa, a former prostitute and Holocaust survivor living in Naples who now takes care of children of prostitutes. But she has her hands full with her latest charge, a 12-year-old Senegalese immigrant named Momo (Ibrahim Gueye). Rosa may seem like the ultimate earth foster mother, but she is haunted by fevered memories of her time at Auschwitz and more and more frequently drifts away from reality.

There are only two months left to go in this truly hellish year and relatively new streaming service HBO Max is trying to make the best of them. While most other streamers recover from Halloween and get prepared for Christmas, HBO Max is using November 2020 to fill out its servers.
Things are pretty light not the new original series front this month with only Industry (Nov. 9) and His Dark Materials season 2 (Nov. 16) making a splash. But the streamer has a couple of notable original films to complement them. Between the World and Me, based on the book by Ta-Nehisi Coates, arrives on Nov. 21 and Melissa McCarthy comedy Superintelligence arrives on Nov. 26. That’s not even to mention two intriguing projects that don’t have dates yet: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion Special and The Mystery of Db Cooper.

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are one of the all-time great buddy comedy duos, and Grumpy Old Men, in which they starred as feuding neighbours John Gustafson Jr. and Max Goldman, still stands as a delightful and often hilarious film. Eddie Murphy is set to star in an upcoming remake of the 1993 Walter Matthau/Jack Lemmon comedy “Grumpy Old Men,” a person with knowledge of the project has told TheWrap. Tim Story, director of the “Ride Along” films, will direct the film.
Warner Bros. will release the film with New Line producing, continuing the two studios’ ongoing plans to revamp IPs from decades past. Other recent WB remakes and updates include “Ocean’s 8” and “It,” the latter of which has a sequel coming out next year. Eddie Murphy has joined New Line’s untitled comedy that is inspired by “Grumpy Old Men,” the 1993 film starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
Tim Story is directing and producing through his The Story Entertainment company, along with John Davis through his Davis Entertainment company. Davis was a producer on the original 1993 movie. Sharla Sumpter Bridgett, president of The Story Company, will also produce.
“Grumpy Old Men” starred Lemmon and Matthau as feuding neighbors who are competing for the attention of a college professor, played by Ann-Margret. Donald Petrie directed “Grumpy,” which grossed $70 million domestically for Warner Bros. and led to a 1995 sequel, “Grumpier Old Men,” which grossed $72 million.
Story’s directing credits include the two “Ride Along” movies, the two “Think Like A Man” movies, “Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer,” “Fantastic Four,” “Barbershop,” and New Line’s upcoming reboot of “Shaft,” starring Samuel L. Jackson and Jessie T. Usher.

Kevin Pollak and Georgina Reilly have joined the hockey biopic “Goalie,” opposite Mark O’Brien as the famed goaltender, Terry Sawchuk.
“Goalie” is directed by Adriana Maggs from a screenplay by Maggs and her sister Jane Maggs. The film is based in part on the book of poetry “Night Work by Randall Maggs and “Sawchuk: The Troubles and Triumphs of the World’s Greatest Goalie” by David Dupuis.
Pollak will play Jack Adams, aka “Trader Jack,” the Detroit Red Wings General Manager. Reilly takes on the role of Patricia Morey, who became first Sawchuk’s girlfriend, then wife.
The story follows Swchuck’s charracter being haunted by the void left from his troubled childhood, which he tried to fill with cheering crowds. The story will explore Sawchuk’s youth in Winnipeg to Detroit, Boston, Toronto, Los Angeles, and New York between 1950 and 1970 — during which he recorded 103 shutouts and 400 stitches to his face.

This is the fourth year publishing the list of television, movies, and books that I read throughout the year. It’s always interesting to look back on the content you have consumed with your viewing and reading habits laid out in front of you. It can be pretty scary for those not ready to truly look inside their own mind. For me, my biggest takeaway is always… “I need to read more books”. Looking through my 2017 media diary it’s hard to deny the fact I read zero books. I did however watch plenty of great television, and a few great movies. (Here’s to changing that in 2018).
2017 was the year in which my excitement for new television far exceeded my excitement for new movies. I continued my trend from 2016 where I felt I watched more television than movies. Television had a far larger impact on me, and sure there...

Here’s your first look at Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro and Kevin Hart in Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming Grudge Match.
In theaters on December 25th, De Niro and Stallone are old boxing rivals who come out of retirement for one final match in director Peter Segal’s comedy.
In Grudge Match, De Niro and Stallone play Billy “The Kid” McDonnen and Henry “Razor” Sharp, two local Pittsburgh fighters whose fierce rivalry put them in the national spotlight. Each had scored a victory against the other during their heyday, but in 1983, on the eve of their decisive third match, Razor suddenly announced his retirement, refusing to explain why but effectively delivering a knock-out punch to both their careers. Thirty years later, boxing promoter Dante Slate Jr., seeing big dollar signs, makes them an offer they can’t refuse: to reenter the ring and settle the score once and for all.

Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone will reunite for Warner Bros. Grudge Match. The two will also be joined by comedian Kevin Hart, who will play the fight promoter of two retired fighters.
Grudge Match will be directed by Peter Segal (50 First Dates, Get Smart) and written by Entourage creator Doug Ellin. The film is being produced at Warner Bros. by Billy Gerber (Gran Toniro), Mark Steven Johnson (Grumpier Old Men) and Michael Ewing (The Longest Yard, Tommy Boy).
The film follows two retired brawlers who return to the ring to sort it out one last time. Both De Niro and Stallone are famous for their boxing roles, and it’ll be exciting to see the Raging Bull go against Rocky Balboa. But this means De Niro needs to tone up because Stallone, 66, still hasn’t lost his muscular figure.
Hart is a good casting choice for the supporting role.

To prove that lightning seldom strikes in the same place twice, we take a look at ten romantic and bromantic movie pairings that failed to work a second time...
We all know and recognise the thought process behind many studios’ decisions to re-cast actors opposite one another after a successful first film together. Whenever a lot is made of two actors’ supposed chemistry alongside one another, the standards are set unusually high for a repeat performance.
One of things that makes that elusive on-screen chemistry so hard to define is that it has often proven so difficult to replicate. Here are ten pairings that have fallen into the ever-expanding trap of diminishing returns. Oh, and if you care to celebrate it with much gusto, happy Valentine’s Day to you all. Here's a look back at Christmas weekend through the years: 5 Years Ago - 2005 Eight movies entered nationwide release, but King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe still packed a one-two punch. Kong's second weekend showed some relative weakness by beating Narnia's third weekend by $1.5 million: Kong made $21.3 million (down 58 percent), while Narnia generated $19.8 million (off 38 percent). Fun with Dick and Jane was the biggest new release with $14.4 million, followed by Cheaper by the Dozen 2 at $9.3 million. Memoirs of a Geisha expanded unmemorably to $6.8 million, The Ringer plopped down with $5.2 million, and Munich was unspectacular with $4.2 million (at 532 venues). Three movies had only one day of nationwide play, due to opening on Sunday, Christmas day, and all three were modest: Rumor Has It at $3.5 million, Wolf Creek at $2.8 million and The Producers at $1.6 million. * Weekend Report: 'King Kong' Clings to Christmas...

Is there an actor alive today who deserves comparison to Walter Matthau? For decades, he filled a niche that he himself created, subtly reinventing himself to fit the characters he played and the times in which he lived, all without breaking a visible sweat.
Hangdog. Sardonic. Grumpy. If you're a member of the generation that was introduced to Matthau during the 1990s, in the twilight of his career, those words might be the first to come to mind. 'Grumpy Old Men' and its sequel, 'Grumpier Old Men,' showcased Matthau as a charming curmudgeon, snarling at "those darn kids" and the unfairness of life in general, yet always with a bemused expression at the ready.

Today Universal released Get Him to the Greek, a sort-of sequel to 2008's Forgetting Sarah Marshall as it uses Aldous Snow who had a small role in the original. Beyond that, there is only a brief reference to Sarah Marshall, which has me thinking it's not really a sequel as much as it is a spin-off. The same could be said for a movie like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)... Same characters, but not really a sequel to Clerks, which ended up having its own sequel in 2006.
In a debate with a group of fellow Seattle critics trying to decide if Get Him to the Greek was a sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall or not, the topic turned to comedy sequels in general and I was asked to name a great comedy sequel. Should be easy... right?

Yesterday i posted an article (which you can find here) looking at the news that Joss Whedon had been chosen as the surprise choice to direct the forthcoming Avengers movie. I called it a bold choice, particularly in contrast with the other directorial choices Marvel have made for their forthcoming projects, choices i saw as bland, safe choices. I thought it might be good to take a look at some of the Marvel and DC comic book adaptations from the past decade to see if the bold/bland comparison holds up.
There are obviously a few that come under the heading of ‘dire’. Movies like Electra, Daredevil, and Catwoman truly are best forgotten. Why did they turn out so badly? Poor casting springs immediately to my mind. On an acting level, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Michael Clarke Duncan, Colin Farrell and Halle Berry could probably all be considered the definition of bland.

In stores this week we have a few cool movies that you might have overlooked during their theatrical runs, and a bunch of others that you're probably glad that you missed. Steven Soderbergh's The Informant! leads the list of major DVD releases, along with Richard Kelly's The Box and Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant starring John C. Reilly. Also out this week is the low budget horror remake Sorority Row, Norwegian Nazi zombie flick Dead Snow, acclaimed U.K. soccer drama The Damned United, and The September Issue, a documentary about infamous Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Truthfully though, I think the main thing we've all really been saving our money for is Jersey Shore: Season 1 Uncensored. What will you be renting or buying this week? The Informant! [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) The Box [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) Sorority Row [7] (+ Blu-ray [8]) Everybody's Fine [9] The Damned United [10] (+ Blu-ray...

Today's a pretty slow DVD day, what with the biggest releases (arguably) The Informant!, The Vampire's Assistant, and The Box. But something potentially nifty caught my eye while browsing through Amazon.com. Seems that Warner Bros. Home Video has a new blu-ray sales plan up their sleeve, which is why you'll notice these brand-new releases on shelves today:
Grumpy Old Men & Grumpier Old Men
Miss Congeniality & Miss Congeniality 2
Dirty Harry & Magnum Force
Presumed Innocent & Frantic
$18 a pop at Amazon. Not a bad deal, if you like both flicks. That's all. Just found it a little interesting. Maybe one day they'll do one of these for some horror flicks. Good ones, I mean. Not the Dark Castle stuff.

I want you to think hard for a second. I realize this is might be diametrically opposed to all the warm-holiday fuzzies you’re feeling right now. And those three gingerbread cookies you ate in lieu of lunch probably aren’t helping either. But here goes: When is the last time you saw a woman over 60 played the lead in a romantic comedy for a major studio?
No, not Diane Keaton. She was 57 when she made Something’s Got to Give. No, not Susan Sarandon. She was 58 when she made Shall We Dance? No, not Helen Mirren. She was 61 when she made The Queen, but while you may have swooned at her portrayal of Elizabeth II it was in hardly a fluffy rom-com. No, if memory serves me you have to go back to 1995 when, at age 61, Sophia Loren starred in Grumpier Old Men. And the men she was romancing...

Both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety are reporting that Columbia Pictures has picked up the rights to adapt Preacher for film. The Vertigo series will be directed by Sam Mendes (Road to Perdition). Neal Moritz (I Am Legend) will produce with Original Films alongside Jason Netter (Wanted) of Kickstart Productions. There are no writers currently attached.
Created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillion, Preacher focuses on small town preacher Jesse Custer who becomes possessed by the entity known as Genesis. The supernatural being is the offspring of an angel and a demon, and bestows upon Custer the Word of God -- the ability to tell anyone to do anything. When Custer learns that God has abandoned Heaven, Jesse sets off with gun-toting ex-girlfriend Tulip and hard-drinking vampire Cassidy to meet their maker and hold him accountable for leaving humanity to fend for itself.
Preacher is an incredibly beloved series by comic fans everywhere.
