Warning: this Inside No. 9 review contains spoilers.
The curse of the ninth. What could be a more fitting inspiration for one of these demonically clever stories? If it hadn’t already existed, they’d have had to invent it.
Inside No. 9’s creators Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith didn’t invent this superstition but they used it to make perhaps their most elegant story yet.
The plot was a trap, avoided. Composer Nathaniel Burnham (Eddie Marsan) had taken his own life after being haunted by a curse that struck artists upon reaching their ninth symphony. Years later, his cash-strapped widow Lillian (Natalie Dormer) ensnared piano tuner Jonah (Reece Shearsmith) to first grave-rob and then complete Nathaniel’s unfinished work, intending to sacrifice him to the fatal curse so that she could profit from the final product. Instead, Jonah turned the tables on Mrs Burnham and, in a sequence beautifully presented by director Guillem Morales,...

A ‘market with a view’ is how Nem Dubrovnik pitches itself. In a literal sense, the view is of the Adriatic Sea, but in a business sense, the ambition is to create a relaxed setting for execs to meet and do deals, a marked switch-up from the hubbub of many TV markets.
Launching in 2013, Nem Dubrovnik has carved out its calendar moment in June. Over a decade, it has established itself as a key buying and selling confab for the Cee region and beyond, with all of the notable buyers in attendance. The market organizers will grow the space for distributors by 40% this year.
Amazon MGM, Disney, Idtv and Lionsgate will have screenings or showcases. Beta Film, Newen Studios, Rai, and Warner Bros. Discovery are among the big European and international players that will be selling programming at Nem.
The Cee region remains a huge buyer of telenovelas and Turkish drama.

Small-town investigation stories, especially from rural England or Ireland, come with a lot of nuances and layers in regards to the stories. There are known and unknown characters, usual suspects, and an unexpected twist in the end. There were Broadchurch, Mare of Eastown, Midsomer Murders, Fargo, Unforgotten, Luther, Line of Duty, and The Woman in the Wall that covered this genre and delivered impeccable drama to keep the audience hooked. Bodkin, the brand-new Irish Netflix original, is all about the disappearance of three people from a town many years ago. Two decades later, three people came looking for answers, and one of them was a local. Created by Jez Scharf, the miniseries was released on the streaming platform on May 9th, 2024.

Ancient Greek Aristotle got it right. The production whole is greater than the sum of its co-production parts. This was the sentiment at a Series Mania session titled ‘Fifty Shades of Co Pro’ on Tuesday.
Simone Emmelius, Zdf’s Senior VP international fiction – co-production and acquisition, laid it out: “You can only spend the Euro once, so you have the opportunity to maybe spend €200,000 [$218,000] on an episode, or you spend €200,000 on an episode that may cost €1.5 million. At the end of it, you get a production value of €1.5 million.” she explained. This encapsulates the essence of co-production, leveraging partnerships to attain a project that far exceeds what individual partners could do alone.
Three of Series Mania’s eight main international competition titles – “Apples Never Fall,” “Rematch,” “So Long, Marianne” — are co-productions. Some panel points of consensus:

Harking back to those erotic thrillers of yore, especially from the 1980s and 90s, writer-director Joy Wilkinson’s 7 Keys, her debut feature, starts out full of promise and potential — much like the impromptu hook-up that gets the plot rolling. Unfortunately, like many an ill-starred love match, what follows is disappointing as things evolve in a lurid and yet strangely predictable direction. But while it all goes sour and south in the last act, there are definitely sparks of originality in the early running, supported by a brace of strong performances from Emma McDonald and Billy Postlethwaite, who deserve better than what the script gives them to work with.
Premiering in the Visions section at SXSW, this low-budget striver of a feature may find berths with streamers, and ought to at least attract attention from casting directors looking for new talents.

After many years in development hell, a live-action adaptation of the Halo video game franchise finally made its way out into the world as a Paramount+ streaming series back in 2022, with the first episode of the show quickly becoming Paramount+’s most-watched premiere. But while the TV series is returning for a second season, which is scheduled to begin streaming on February 8th, the first season wasn’t met with overwhelming positivity, as many fans of the video game source material were disappointed by some of the choices made for the adaptation. Not even star Pablo Schreiber, who plays the character Master Chief on the show, was entirely happy with that first season. Speaking with SFX Magazine, Schreiber revealed there was even one element that he felt was a huge mistake: the romantic storyline with Master Chief and Makee (Charlie Murphy), which even included a sex scene.

Paramount+ revealed the official trailer for Halo‘s second season, which has Pablo Schreiber returning as Master Chief John-117 as he leads a team of elite Spartans against the alien threat known as the Covenant.
The new season has showrunner David Wiener (Brave New World) taking over for last season’s Steven Kane, who oversaw physical production on the first season in Budapest, and Kyle Killen, who supervised writing and production in the United States.
The new footage shows plenty of space action, though it appears a bit dim and murky (at least, in this trailer):
Wiener, Schreiber and newcast member Joseph Morgan had unveiled the first new footage for season two at Ccxp in São Paulo in December.

British investigation dramas are one of a kind. Every single story in this genre is executed in a different manner, which leaves the audience surprised in most cases. Broadchurch, Sherlock, Midsomer Murders, Happy Valley, and Bodyguard are some of the prime examples of how good the shows can get if a lot of time is invested in a good screenplay and casting the right actors. Mostly, it is the BBC that is churning out great television in this genre. Adding to the list is Annika, created by Nick Walker. This limited series is a Scottish police drama about a new branch of the investigation team and their attempts to get grips with new assignments.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a Bridgerton spinoff series that shows us how life was in the Ton during the early days of Queen Charlotte and King George’s marriage. We get to see how they meet and fall in love, how her reign leads to social change in the Ton, and how she became the strong and influential Queen that we see in Bridgerton’s first two seasons. But just because this series introduces us to younger versions of familiar characters doesn’t mean that it’s stuck in the past. Queen Charlotte also features an arc set in the “present day” Regency era of the original series that focuses on Charlotte, Lady Danbury, and Violet Bridgerton’s friendship.
Between both eras, Queen Charlotte has a massive cast full of new and familiar faces. If you want to be as up to date on the hot gossip of the ton as Lady Whistledown,...

As negotiations between the WGA and the studios and streamers gather steam, the reverberations are being felt well beyond the confines of Sherman Oaks where the sides are sitting down to wrangle over complicated issues at stake. Thousands of miles away, on the other side of the Atlantic, questions are already being asked about what impact a WGA strike may have in the U.K. – and whether British writers, who harbor many of the same concerns as their American counterparts, could ever stage a strike.
“The problems that U.K. writers and U.S. writers face are basically the same,” says Robert Taylor, a lawyer and screenwriter who also acts as a legal advisor to the Writers Guild of Great Britain (Wggb). “The things in the U.S. strike about not getting paid enough by the streaming services, the things about mini [writers’] rooms and the writers being expected to contribute...

British actor and satirist John Bird has died aged 86.
The Bremner, Bird and Fortune star passed away “peacefully” on Christmas Eve at a care home in West Sussex, UK, according to his representatives.
Bremner, Bird and Fortune, which was from Vera Productions, ran for 16 seasons in the UK on Channel 4, ending in 2008.
His long-time comedy partner Rory Bremner led the tributes, writing on Twitter he was “deeply saddened to hear that the great John Bird has left us. One of the most modest of men and most brilliant of satirists. And one of the last surviving pillars of the anti-establishment.”
Bremner urged people to view Bird and John Fortunes’ ‘Long Johns’ comedy sketch interviews, in which they played members of the establishment, “and ask yourself if it’s ever been more beautifully done.

“I used to watch from the wings and marvel at how the two friends made it look so effortless, so blissfully funny, their skill and enjoyment in the moment making light of the seriously detailed research that went into each piece.”
Bird also worked with Fortune and Bremner on Rory Bremner, Who Else? for Channel 4 and the BBC’s Now Something Else.
Fortune died aged 74 on New Year’s Eve 2013.
“Lord knows, satire has missed them this last decade and now that loss is permanent,” said Bremner. “John may not have felt he got his life right, but by god he got it written.”
Bird met Fortune at Cambridge University, where he was part of the famous Cambridge Footlights Revue, where his contemporaries included Peter Cook.
His career included spells at the Royal Court Theatre and acted in fantasy comedy film Jabberwocky, UK comedy series Yes, Prime Minister and One Foot in the Grave, and also played Professor Plum in a TV adaptation of board game Cluedo. He also appeared in popular British detective shows Jonathan Creek, Inspector Morse and Midsomer Murders.
He is survived by wife Libby and two stepsons.
