It’s been a long time coming, but a remake of the 1994 film The Crow (which was based on the comic book series created by James O’Barr) will finally be making its way out into the world on August 23rd, which is when Lionsgate will be giving the film a theatrical release. With that release date swiftly approaching, we figured we should gather together all the information we have on this movie… and here it is, Everything We Know About The Crow Remake:
Development Hell
When the original The Crow was released, it was successful enough to spawn a franchise, with three sequels following over the next eleven years. We got The Crow: City of Angels in 1996, The Crow: Salvation in 2000, and The Crow: Wicked Prayer in 2005, with several other potential sequels (including one that would have been written and directed by Rob Zombie) being developed and scrapped along the way.

The vengeful spirit Eric Draven first appeared in James O'Barr's indie comic "The Crow" in 1989. He became a Goth household name in 1994 thanks to the popularity of Alex Proyas' ultra-stylized, uber-Noir film adaptation starring Brandon Lee, who was infamously killed on the set of "The Crow" thanks to a misfiring prop gun. The teens of 1994 venerated the film, and "The Crow" was deeply beloved by many. The film warranted several sequels, including "The Crow: City of Angels" in 1994, "The Crow: Salvation" in 2000, and "The Crow: Wicked Prayer" in 2005. O'Barr's characters were also featured in the 1998 TV series "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven."
Although O'Barr's Goth sensibilities were a product of their time, filmmakers and producers have been trying to get a "Crow" remake off the ground for a long while, and the project has changed hands almost a dozen times in the last 20 years. After a lot of juggling,...

After years of being stuck in development hell, "The Crow" remake is finally coming to theaters this summer. It stars Bill Skarsgard ("It") as Eric Draven, the role made famous by the late Brandon Lee in director Alex Proyas' 1994 comic book film of the same name. The reaction to the recently released trailer and images has been mixed, to put it mildly. Now, Proyas himself has weighed in, and the forthcoming remake does not sit well with him.
Proyas took to Facebook recently to share some of his thoughts on this new version of "The Crow," which was directed by Rupert Sanders ("Snow White and the Huntsman"). Proyas, for his part, didn't have anything nice to say, as he even linked to an article from Comic Book Resources titled "The Crow Remake Trailer Gets Staggering Amount of Dislikes on YouTube." While Proyas prefaced his commentary by saying that he does...

Over the years, filmmaker Alex Proyas has maintained that his 1994 feature The Crow should not get a reboot out of respect for Brandon Lee, his star who died in an on-set accident. Now, after years of development, a The Crow reboot is indeed ready for release, and Proyas is once again expressing his concerns.
“I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work. And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan’s response speaks volumes,” Proyas wrote on Facebook Monday, along with a link to an article noting that The Crow reboot’s trailer received numerous dislikes on YouTube. “The Crow is not just a movie. The comic book "The Crow," created by James O'Barr in 1989, should be considered a seminal work in the then-growing Goth movement. The comics were about a man named Eric who was engaged to a woman named Shelly. One evening, Eric and Shelly are savagely beaten and assaulted. Eric is shot in the head but remains alive long enough to witness Shelly's horrible murder.
His story doesn't end there. The titular Crow appears over Eric's body and magically resurrects him, sending him on a quest for blood revenge. The unspeaking crow seems to want Eric to kill the punks that murdered Shelly, but also seemingly chastises him for brooding and remaining hung up on Shelly's death. Be angry, brood, but do not brood, and do not be angry. It's super-Goth. The comic was popular enough to warrant a celebrated film adaptation in 1994 starring Brandon Lee and directed by Alex Proyas. The film was ultra-stylized,...

Based on the comic book series created by James O’Barr, the first version of The Crow was released in 1994 and told the tragic story of goth rocker Eric Draven and the love of his life, Shelly Webster. Later this year, we’ll be getting a remake of The Crow, with the story of Eric and Shelly being told all over again. It seems kind of strange to do a remake and revisit characters in a franchise that lends itself to the anthology format, where each film can be focused on a different vengeful, undead person… but it does make business sense, because The Crow remake is getting more attention than the three Crow sequels ever got. But those Crow sequels do have their fans, and Scream Factory is about to celebrate one of them – The Crow: Salvation from 2000 – with a limited edition Blu-ray release on March 26th.

After years of stops and starts, The Crow reboot is finally flying and now has the first trailer to prove it.
Bill Skarsgard leads the film, which centers on a man who is murdered, alongside his fiancée but is granted supernatural powers to seek revenge.
The Crow began life as a comic book, with James O’Barr debuting the character in 1989. It grew to new levels of popularity with the cult hit film, which starred the late Brandon Lee, who was tragically killed in an on-set accident during filming. Multiple sequels followed, including The Crow: City of Angels (1996), The Crow: Salvation (2000) and The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005).
But the current reboot took nearly 20 years to get off the ground, with multiple stars and filmmakers coming and going. Blade Stephen Norrington took a stab at one point, while F. Javier Gutiérrez (Before the Fall) and star Luke Evans tried to break the curse at another point.

It may be downright difficult to believe, but "The Crow" remake has finally happened. Yes, happened, not happening, as had been promised for so long. Lionsgate has now dropped the first trailer for the long-awaited new adaptation of the comic book by James O'Barr. After all these years, we are, at long last, going to see what Eric Draven looks like in a modern context a full 30 years after the first film arrived in 1994. Check it out for yourself above.
This time around, it's Bill Skarsgård, best known for his role as Pennywise the clown in the "It" movies, taking on the role of Eric Draven. Noticeably, his look is, well, different than what we've seen previously, most notably when the late Brandon Lee originated the role in director Alex Proyas' version of "The Crow." Whether that look is better or worse is a matter left to individual opinion, but...

If it feels like a new take on The Crow has been in development for 15 years, that's perhaps because a new take on The Crow has been in development for, well, 15 years at least. Yet after a revolving door of directors, writers and potential leads, it's finally headed our way this year, with Bill Skarsgård playing the tragic Eric Draven and Rupert Sanders directing. Check out the first images from the new adaptation of James O'Barr's graphic novel above and below.
O'Barr's original story focuses on Eric, a young man who, along with his fiancee Shelly, is brutally assaulted and slaughtered by a gang when their car breaks down. Eric is resurrected by a supernatural crow to stalk and seek vengeance against those responsible for the crime. Alex Proyas' 1994 film retooled the story around rock musician Eric Draven, who is murdered along with his fiancee Shelly on Devil's Night...

The Crow series is a prime example of the sad but true happening of diminishing returns. While these are not 100% horror, they are often categorized as so and do contain a certain amount of horror elements. So if horror-adjacent is an issue, you’ve been warned. When it comes to the third entry in the series, well, it’s not exactly beloved. But it turns out it’s not the worst of the bunch, either. The Crow: Salvation (get it Here) didn’t do well upon release, didn’t exactly do well financially, and it’s not beloved by fans. Yet, something is interesting here, and it may be a lesson about filmmaking, timing, and taking risks.

The fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins by Alec Baldwin last week on the Santa Fe set of Rust wasn’t the first time First Assistant Director David Hills worked on a film where a weapon discharged unexpectedly.
Back in late 2019, a gun went off on the Arkansas set of Freedom’s Path, where Halls was an Ad. The incident caused a member of the Rocket Soul Studios-produced movie’s sound department to jump back from the close-by blast.
“First of all, our condolences go out to everyone affected by the recent tragic event in New Mexico,” said one of the producers of Freedom’s Path to Deadline today.
“I can confirm that Dave Halls was fired from the set of Freedom’s Path in 2019 after a crew member incurred a minor and temporary injury when a gun was unexpectedly discharged,” he added. “Halls was removed from set immediately after the prop gun discharged.

It’s oh so quiet….Not much to report on this week really. Things will probably kick up a gear as the dark nights draw in further and the kids get a week off at some point in October.
About the best thing I could write about at the moment really is how good is the final season of Breaking Bad?!? So so very good and if you aren’t watching it then all of it is on Netflix for you to absorb. Only two episodes left now and man it is looking like it’s going to go out on a massively epic and unexpected note. If they stick the landing this will be one of the best crime saga’s of all time standing alongside The Wire and The Sopranos.

Despite the fact that Jane Levy claimed to hate filming Evil Dead, she is back for more horror. THR reports that she has signed on to the horror thriller, In a Dark Place. The Crow: Salvation’s Bharat Nalluri will direct.
With a plot that includes England and a haunted doll, the film is already off to a good start.
“The thriller centers on a young American woman who moves to England to become the governess of a porcelain doll, which the family treats as its own son. When the family leaves for a holiday, the woman begins to think the doll is haunted and may be alive,” The Hollywood Reporter said.
It looks like production will start in the spring of 2013.

When she isn't making us laugh in her starring role on ABC's Suburgatory, Jane Levy's been adding to her feature credits, with a lead role in last year's Fun Size and a part in the greatly anticipated horror Evil Dead. It looks like scary may be a recurring theme for the actor, as she has another feature lined up, which sounds pretty scary - particularly for those of us who find porcelain dolls to be especially creepy. THR reports that Levy is set to star in Gold Circle's In a Dark Place, which will be directed by Bharat Nalluri (The Crow: Salvation, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day). The thriller follows a young American woman who goes to England to serve as the governess to a porcelain doll, which is treated like a real son to the family that owns it. The governess is charged with looking after the...

The revolving door that is the reboot of James O'Barr's graphic novel The Crow on the big screen just keeps on spinning. Are you ready for a recap? Take a deep breath, here we go:Alex Proyas' initial 1994 film adaptation of the character proved enough of a cult hit to spawn three vastly inferior sequels - 1996's The Crow: City Of Angels, 2000's The Crow: Salvation and 2005's The Crow: Wicked Prayer - along with a 1998 television series with Mark Dacascos filling the role. The title has been dormant for some time now but execs have been looking for a way to bring it back.Director Stephen Norrington was initially slated to direct the reboot from a script by Nick Cave. Then an actor...

Blond, hot body Bradley Cooper as a Goth action hero? We can't quite picture it, yet, but the 'Limitless' star is in talks to headline a new version of 'The Crow.'
Variety reports that Cooper is in "early negotiations" for the lead role with Relativity Media. He recently flew to Spain to meet with director Juan Carlo Fresnadillo ('28 Days Later'), who was impressed with Cooper's take on the character.
Brandon Lee starred in the first 1994 Crow film as a musician who returns from the grave to avenge his own murder; the son of Bruce Lee tragically died in an on-set accident. He was followed by Vincent Perez in 'The Crow: City of Angels,' then Eric Mabius in 'The Crow: Salvation.'
It's not clear if Fresnadillo will be using the script Goth rocker Nick Cave wrote when director Stephen Norrington was attached.

Hm... we're not sure how fans of the original film are going to feel about this casting.
"The Hangover" star Bradley Cooper is in negotiations to star in the remake of "The Crow," EW reports. Previously, Mark Wahlberg was in consideration for the part, but talks fell through.
The 1994 film followed a man Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) brutally murdered who comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée's murder. The cult hit was adapted from the '80s comic books by James O'Barr. The film's star Brandon Lee died during production when a prop gun misfired.
Three other films have been made based on "The Crow" comic books by O'Barr. A sequel, "The Crow: City of Angels,"starring Vincent Perez came out in 1996, "The Crow: Salvation" came out in 2000 and "The Crow: Wicked Prayer," which starred David Boreanaz and Edward Furlong, was released in 2005.

Juan Fresnadillo to remake cult 90s action-horror film about a rock star who rises from the dead to avenge his own murder
The 1994 gothic action shoot-em-up The Crow is the latest film to be considered worthy of a reboot, as it was announced that 28 Weeks Later director Juan Fresnadillo will take the reins for a forthcoming remake.
The original Crow, based on a comic book by James O'Barr, featured Brandon Lee as a musician called Eric Draven, who rises from the dead to avenge his own murder, and that of his fiancee. The film became notorious when Lee died on set after a prop gun malfunctioned.
The Crow became a cult hit, making $50m at the Us box office, and spawned three sequels, The Crow: City of Angels, The Crow: Salvation, and The Crow: Wicked Prayer, as well as a TV series starring Mark Dacascos.

Eric Draven lives again.
"The Crow" has been a franchise that Hollywood has inexplicably rendered an utter and colossal failure. The original 1994 film starring the late, great Brandon Lee and directed by Alex Proyas was a genre masterpiece; a dark gothic fairy tale of tragic romance and violent revenge, with Lee as a slain musician brought back to life one year after he and his fiance are murdered to "put the wrong things right."
Lee was an A-list movie star in the making; imagine what his career -- and life -- might have been today had he survived the horrible on-set accident that took his life at age 28.
Maybe it's that so-called "Crow Curse" that has kept the franchise itself from taking flight. The 1996 sequel, "The Crow: City of Angels," was an incoherent mess (though it looked pretty), and the less said about the direct-to-video sequels, "The Crow: Salvation" (2000) and...

Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.
A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).
How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...

It’s that time of year again, kids. Dread Central’s 2010 Horror at the Oscars coverage. Horror was indeed present this year and in black-tie. While Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall were honored a few months back at the Governor’s Award Ceremony, it was an unexpected delight to see Corman, recipient of the lifetime achievement Oscar, enjoy a standing ovation on national television.
I was, however, very disappointed that neither of them were allowed to speak. Roger Corman’s contributions to modern cinema are too vast for him to just stand up and wave. James Cameron was one of many Corman acolytes present, and his nomination speaks to Corman’s tremendous legacy. On the Terminator DVD Cameron mentions, "I trained at the Roger Corman Film School.” Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, were also former students.

Director Stephen Norrington has a hit-and-miss record when it comes to comic book movie adaptations. His Blade was praised by comic book fans and performed well enough at the box office to spawn two theatrical sequels and a short-lived TV series. However, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen failed to cover its budget at the domestic box office and was almost universally panned by critics.
When it was first announced that a new The Crow movie was in the works back in December 2008, Norrington, who is writing the script as well as directing, said that his intention is to make a more "realistic, hard-edged, and mysterious" movie than director Alex Proyas' "gloriously gothic and stylized" 1994 original. Not much has been heard about The Crow since then, but Norrington recently updated the status of the movie in a brief interview with Mania. The producer and visual effects people are crunching numbers.

Season 4 of Dexter may be over, but news is still pouring out. Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips has decided to leave the show after four award-winning years in order to spend time with his family. "I need to be part of my own life," he told The Hollywood Reporter. Seems a reasonable request, since he has spent the last four years spending nine months in Los Angeles for the show, while only have three months with his family at their home in Connecticut. Taking his place will be Chip Johannessen, whose long list of genre writing and producing credits includes Moonlight, The X-Files, Millennium, Dark Angel and The Crow: Salvation. Meanwhile, Dexter's record-breaking season went out with a...

A year ago, it seemed a remake of Jerome Salle's French thriller "Anthony Zimmer" was all set to begin filming in early 2009 with Tom Cruise and Charlize Theron starring and Bharat Nalluri ("The Crow: Salvation") directing. All of those players have now passed their respective hats though. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Theron is out and will potentially be replaced by Angelina Jolie.
The English-language redo, which is titled "The Tourist," had already seen Cruise replaced with "Terminator Salvation" actor Sam Worthington. Reportedly Nalluri is also off the film and producers seek a filmmaker who will work well with Jolie. Interestingly enough, the female half of Brangelina just finished shooting the action/thriller "Salt," for which she had replaced Cruise in the gender-switched lead role.
It is somewhat surprising that Jolie would go from that movie to a similar project, as both are thrillers in which she plays an international agent of some sort.

I believe we may have done this once before, and it's a geek-friendly internet game that's been around a lot longer than Cinematical ... but hey, fun is fun, right? Plus we wanted to do something nerdish and colorful to kick off the worldwide Comic Con festivites. (Oh, it's only in San Diego? It only feels like a global event? Gotcha.) Anyway, you should know how this works: Deep within the confines of my hard drive there lies a list of over 64 Superhero Movies. But before we can truly get started we need to whittle that list down to precisely 64, at which point I'll randomize the films, bracket them accordingly, and begin the game proper.
So here's how you start: I will give you a bunch of choices. You pick which film you like more. Yes, just like on Flickchart, you addicts. The winners earn the right to make the big...

A New film adaptation of The Crow comic book will feature a completely different version of the goth avenger, it's been reported.
Director Stephen Norrington is relaunching the franchise, which was previously adapted into a 1994 film starring Brandon Lee.
It was followed by three film sequels - The Crow: City of Angels in 1996, The Crow: Salvation in 2000, and The Crow: Wicked Prayer in 2005 - and a TV series called The Crow: Stairway to Heaven in 1998.
The first film was a critical and commercial success and has become a cult classic, earning a place in film legend because its star Lee died, at the age of 28, in a tragic gun accident on set. The three sequels were all flops, with the last two going straight to video.
According to Mania.com, the new movie will not focus on creator James O'Barr's original Crow, Eric Draven, a rock musician who is...

For the past fifteen years, Static-x has been delivering their crushing brand of industrial metal (self-dubbed "evil disco") to the masses. On March 17th, the band will release Cult Of Static, their sixth studio album, coming on the eve of the tenth anniversary of their platinum-selling debut, Wisconsin Death Trip. Last night, Fango caught up with bassist Tony Campos, who along with frontman Wayne Static, has been in the band since the beginning. What followed was a conversation about the band, their new album, and their long-running connections to the horror genre.
James Zahn: So you've got Cult Of Static being released almost 10 years to the date that Wisconsin Death Trip (released March 23, 1999) came out. How do you feel Static-x has evolved over the course of the past decade?
Tony Campos: It's weird, ya know? We did some experimenting on the third and fourth albums, and then went...

As McA of the Beastie Boys, Adam Yauch has rapped about "Three MCs and One DJ," but as a filmmaker, he's had to learn to go solo. With his latest documentary "Gunnin' For That #1 Spot," Yauch is continuing the tradition of musicians who crossed over to direct movies, something that started all the way back when Frank Sinatra sat in the director's chair for 1965's World War II drama "None But the Brave."
