With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.
Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

Thanks to its strong appeal among neglected adult audiences, Lee Daniels' The Butler easily took first place at the box office this weekend. Meanwhile, Kick-Ass 2 opened well below its predecessor, while Jobs and Paranoia both bombed. The Top 12 earned $121.4 million, which is off five percent from the same weekend last year when The Expendables 2 ruled the box office.Playing at 2,933 locations, The Butler opened to $24.6 million. That's a bit lower than The Help ($26 million), which opened in August 2011 and also dealt with the African-American experience during the civil rights movement (The Help also burned off some demand with a Wednesday debut). The Butler was also a bit stronger than Eat Pray Love and Julie & Julia, both of which were August releases targeted at adult audiences. The Butler's success can first-and-foremost be attributed to strong scheduling. August has historically been a great time to release movies like this:...

From Fred and Ginger to Jennifer and Ashton, romantic comedies used to be one of the safest bets in Hollywood. But it seems that rom is just not into com any more
Is it the end for the romcom? You can imagine the celebrity mag headlines: "Romcom's relationship on the rocks?" "Com: I'm just not that into Rom" "Rom: Com doesn't make me laugh any more."
After all, who says romance and comedy go together like a horse and carriage? It seems to be a chiselled Hollywood commandment that the two shall be forever conjoined in cinematic matrimony, but perhaps it's time they went their separate ways. Sure, they got off to a great start: in those early years it was all fun and games and sparkling repartee, but recently they haven't quite looked the happy couple; the spark just hasn't been there.
They've been stuck in the same repetitive formula: boy meets girl,...

Charlie Sheen's replacement on Two and a Half Men plays dumb hunks and is married to Demi Moore. And he could soon be ridiculously rich
Life often imitates art, but perhaps never as strangely as in the current case of Ashton Kutcher, the puppyish actor best known for playing dumb but good-looking characters in Us sitcoms and Hollywood movies. Tomorrow night Kutcher, 33, who is married to A-list actress Demi Moore, will replace Charlie Sheen's old role on the hit TV show Two and a Half Men. Kutcher will play an internet billionaire – a role tailor-made for an actor who is, in fact, one of the savviest and best known investors in California's supercharged Silicon Valley.
Kutcher has carved out a reputation as a master of the highly complex and ultra-competitive start-up scene whose celebrity touch – and millions of dollars in potential investment funds – can turn a company from idea to reality,...

Subject: Ashton Kutcher, 31-year old American actor, producer, and Twitterer
Date of Assessment: January 21, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: Uh ... Apocalypse Man?
Negative Buzzwords: Obnoxious, entitled, talentless
The Case: Today's subject presents absolutely no challenge in terms of tearing him apart, for he's already done the job himself. Nevertheless, I capitulate to this dreadful week (which has included a very sick child and two funerals) and am inclined to just take the easy way out with a so-called actor who's not even worth this small scrap of cyberspace.
For some time, however, Ashton Kutcher was worthy of the small screen. With his trusty trucker hat in tow, he aimlessly drifted through eight seasons on "That 70s Show," sixty-nine episodes of "Punk'd" (as a Puck-like figure playing pranks on his celebrity friends), and a very short-lived E! series, "Pop Fiction" (essentially an even more obnoxious and self-serving version of "Punk'd" that targeted media and news outlets). Cher and Johnny Knoxville have signed on to star in The Drop Out, a comedy being written and directed by Ricky Blitt. John Jacobs (Blades of Glory, My Boss's Daughter) is producing. Knoxville plays a 35-year-old career college student who is finally kicked out of his parents house. Desperate, he decides to get in good with the 62-year-old woman next door (Cher), so he can keep his food, couch and TV regimen intact. In the mix is the woman's ne'er-do-well son, who is looking for a father figure, even if it's a guy his own age. The filmmakers are actively casting the son role. Blitt, a former producer and writer for Family Guy, also wrote the 2005 comedy The Ringer, which starred Knoxville and was produced by Jacobs and the Farrelly Brothers. Cher’s last big screen role was in 2003 in the Farrelly Brothers comedy Stuck on You.

The media have already dubbed this weekend's boxoffice showdown as the Battle of the That '70s Show Stars. But despite the fact that two of that sitcom's regulars, Ashton Kutcher and Topher Grace, headline the two new wide releases, the contest is really one between vastly different genres. Kutcher's The Butterfly Effect is a spooky, time-traveling, psychological thriller, and Grace's Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! is a lighter-than-air, teen-centric romantic comedy. Kutcher is, of course, much more of a proven boxoffice commodity than Grace. Although Grace has appeared in such ensemble films as Traffic and Mona Lisa Smile, his individual appeal has yet to be tested. Kutcher can boast of the unforgettable Dude, Where's My Car? ($46.7 million) and January 2003's surprise hit Just Married ($56 million). (The August release My Boss's Daughter, which flatlined at $15.5 million, is best forgotten.) Still, it's the genre, not the stars, that may determine this weekend's returns.

Amid a late summer clearance of moderate to dismal new wide releases and a slew of limited engagements and expansions, New Line's slasher fantasy match Freddy vs. Jason made the cut once again. The horror film sat atop the boxoffice chart with an estimated $13.5 million intake. Freddy is the first film since 20th Century Fox's X2: X-Men United, released back in early May, to hold the top spot for two consecutive weekends. The R-rated horror film dropped 63% from its debut and has taken in an estimated $61.5 million in 10 days. Sony's S.W.A.T. was in the second spot with an estimated $10.8 million, slipping 40% in its third frame while the total inches closer to the $100 million mark with an estimated cume of $88.1 million. Screen Gems' The Medallion was the strongest performer among the new wide releases this weekend as the Jackie Chan starrer placed fifth with a respectable estimate of $8.2 million. Dimension's My Boss's Daughter debuted in the 10th slot with an estimated $5 million. The PG-13 rated comedy, starring Ashton Kutcher and Tara Reid, was at the high end of what was expected but was still not enough to write home about. The David Zucker-helmed picture had a per-theater average of a weak $2,272. And the opening of Paramount's Marci X was more in line with an ad campaign for its video release than a theatrical debut. The comedy, starring Lisa Kudrow and Damon Wayans, proved its very limited appeal with an estimated gross of $865,000 from 1,200 theaters, averaging a miserable $721 per theater.
