June is busting out all over, especially on streaming. Whether it’s hiding from the heat or taking a break from school and work, Disney+ and Hulu are here to satisfying your mid-year entertainment needs.
Disney+ will premiere the first new live-action Star Wars since 2023’s middling to “The Mandalorian” Season 3 and “Ahsoka” with “The Acolyte,” starring “Squid Game” breakout Lee Jung-jae. The series is set before the events of “The Phantom Menace” with a familiar master-padawan storyline but new characters and a new era where that dynamic unfolds. The streamer will also premiere various new options for kids and family-friendly programming, as well as new episodes of “Doctor Who” starring Ncuti Gatwa.
On Hulu, FX comes in hot for the summer, along with an adaptation of Candice Carty-Williams’s “Queenie,” the brat-pack documentary “Brats,” and yes — more “Love Island.” The TV and film library continues to shift with new and expiring titles,...

NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock has revealed the first photos from Roland Emmerich’s epic drama series Those About to Die, set in ancient Rome. Emmerich directs the series and serves as executive producer.
Those About to Die stars two-time Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins and a cast that includes Iwan Rheon, Sara Martins, Tom Hughes, Jojo Macari, and Moe Hashim. All ten episodes of the series will launch on July 18.
Those About to Die is an epic drama set in the corrupt world of spectacle-driven gladiatorial competition. It explores a side of ancient Rome never before told—the dirty business of entertaining the masses and giving the mob what they want most…blood and sport.
The series introduces an ensemble of characters from all corners of the Roman Empire who collide at the explosive intersection of sports, politics, and dynasties.
“I have always been fascinated by the history of the Roman Empire.

The genre of science fiction is the one that deals with imaginative concepts of science and technology, trying to predict the future or to speculate of parallel universes. However, sometimes a movie pretending to stick to the real-life laws of science turns out to be among the least scientifically accurate ones.
Here are 5 sci-fi films with zero science factor, handpicked by Redditors.

“Everyone knows the 10% of brain 'fact' is completely bogus, but they built an entire movie around it anyway,” admits Redditor @lostonpolk.
Indeed, the whole concept of Luc Besson’s movie assuming that people only use about 10% of their total brainpower is a total myth. In fact, we use different parts of our brain for different tasks, and we don’t need a special drug to unlock increased intellectual capacity.

World War II was still raging in May 1944. The allied invasion of Normandy — aka D-Day — was just around the corner on June 6th. Americans kept the home fires burning and escaped from the global conflict by going to the movies. Two of the biggest films of the year, Leo McCarey’s “Going My Way” and George Cukor’s “Gaslight,” recently celebrated their 80th anniversaries.
Actually, “Going My Way” had a special “Fighting Front” premiere on April 27th: 65 prints were shipped to battle fronts and shown “from Alaska to Italy, and from England to the jungles of Burma.” The sentimental comedy-drama-musical arrived in New York on May 3rd.
And it was just the uplifting film audiences needed. Bing Crosby starred as Father O’Malley, a laid-back young priest who arrives at a debt-ridden New York City church that is run by the older, set-in-his ways Father Fitzgibbon (Barry Fitzgerald). The elder...

Those who know who Roland Emmerich is will probably know that the director is known for his epic films, a lot of which are also major disaster films. Some of these major titles include Universal Soldier (1992), Stargate (1994), Independence Day (1996) and its sequel Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), Godzilla (1998), The Patriot (2000), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), 10,000 BC (2008), 2012 (2009), White House Down (2013), Midway (2019), and Moonfall (2022). But, Emmerich is now shifting to television, as his new project is about to be released on Peacock this summer. Ahead of the premiere, a teaser trailer has been released.
The project in question is the epic sword-and-sandal series Those About to Die, which is set in Ancient Rome. The series will be based on the book of the same name by writer and journalist Daniel P. Mannix; interesting enough, the same book served as the basis for Ridley Scott’s epic classic, Gladiator.

Jake Gyllenhaal recently opened up on “The Howard Stern Show” about what it was like losing two major roles during the final rounds of casting: Batman in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” and Christian in Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge!” On the latter film, the audition process came down to Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger and Ewan McGregor. It’s here where Gyllenhaal first heard of Ledger, who would later become his co-star in “Brokeback Mountain.”
“What I felt was disappointment when I didn’t get it. Both Heath and I were disappointed,” Gyllenhaal said. “But that’s Ewan McGregor’s part. You learn to go, ‘There’s another one. I can try and go in and audition for another one. I’ll get something else.’ You keep that attitude.”
Gyllenhaal maintained that healthy mindset when he lost out on “Batman Begins” a few years after “Moulin Rouge!” fell through. David S. Goyer,...

ChelseaVFX loves to make impossible things.
If you’ve been anywhere on TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram over the past few months, you’ve probably seen one of her videos. She’s racked up hundreds of millions of views across these platforms since going full-time on content just six months ago, and that’s by using her visual effects skills to produce videos that defy reality (and usually physics).
There’s this one where she pours out water that appears to instantly freeze, The Day After Tomorrow-style, in Toronto’s icy conditions. Or this one that follows an apparent mountain climber whose world is upended when whoever’s holding the camera decides to turn it horizontal–and then turn it again, sending her plummeting off the cliff.

Happy Face has cast its killer. Dennis Quaid is joining Annaleigh Ashford on the Paramount+ project, which was ordered to series back in November 2021. It has been delayed for various reasons.
The new series is inspired by the Happy Face podcast and the book Shattered Silence by Melissa Jesperson-Moore with M. Bridget Cook. The eight-episode first season will revolve around Melissa (Ashford), who discovers her father (Quaid) is a serial killer.

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal has been part of many appreciated films in the thirty years he has been part of the film industry. The actor has worked with acclaimed directors such as Ang Lee, David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve, and Dan Gilroy. The Zodiac star has been nominated for the Oscars once and the Golden Globes twice.
While the actor has starred with many prominent actors in his films, he seemed to have forgotten that he co-starred with actor Dennis Quaid. Last month, it was announced that Melissa Moore’s autobiography Shattered Silence, which previously inspired the podcast Happy Face, is getting a Paramount+ streaming series adaptation that’s also titled Happy Face. Annaleigh Ashford – whose credits include B Positive, American Crime Story, and Masters of Sex – had already signed on to star in the series at that time, and now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Dennis Quaid, whose long lists of credits includes the likes of The Day After Tomorrow, Innerspace, Frequency, and Jaws 3D, will be playing a serial killer on the show.
Happy Face will see Ashford taking on the role of Melissa, who at age 15, discovered that her beloved father was the prolific serial killer known as “Happy Face.” As an adult, she has changed her name and guarded her secret while her father has been serving life in prison. Dennis Quaid has signed on for a leading role in the upcoming Paramount+ series “Happy Face,” Variety has learned.
Quaid will appear alongside previously announced star Annaleigh Ashford. The series is inspired by the podcast of the same name from iHeartMedia and Melissa Moore, the book “Shattered Silence” written by Moore with M. Bridget Cook, and Moore’s true-life story.
In real life, Moore discovered at 15 that her father was the serial killer known as “Happy Face,” due to the smiley faces he drew on evidence where he bragged about his crimes. As an adult, she has changed her name and guarded her secret while her father has been serving life in prison.
The official description for the series states that it jumps off from Moore’s real life story. “Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who also is Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father,” the description reads. “After decades of no contact,...

It's hard to read the news these days without feeling a sense of existential dread flare up in your soul. Of course, we're nearly four decades removed now from Steve Martin picking up a newspaper and screaming in his classic '80s rom-com "Roxanne," so it's not as though fretting about the state of the world is a new sensation. Be that as it may, filmmakers have spent much of the 21st century postulating how human society might come toppling down. Perhaps global warming will do us in, like in "The Day After Tomorrow." Or maybe humanity's tampering with nature will produce a super-virus that plunges our global civilization into chaos, like in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." That movie feels especially prescient in the wake of 2020.

The "Ghostbusters" franchise turns 40 next year, and, judging from the teaser trailer for 2024's "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," it appears that director Gil Kenan (who's taking over for "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" helmer Jason Reitman) has conjured a big New York City adventure that will play like a supernatural "The Day After Tomorrow." The Zoomer busters introduced in the last film (played by Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace) will join forces with the elder contingent to combat a shadowy evil force capable of wiping out humanity via something called the "death chill."
This sounds far more ominous than anything the Ghostbusters have faced in the last three installments, which is encouraging if, like me, you believe one of the crucial components of the 1984 original was its capacity to occasionally scare audiences senseless. I'll never forget watching Ivan Reitman's classic in a packed theater, and being surprised that he kicked off the film...

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

"Kuwtk" ran from 2007 to 2021 and has since been cemented in pop culture as one of the most popular and longest-running reality TV shows of all time, per Newsweek. Kardashian made her return to TV in April 2022 with the Hulu series "The Kardashians," which is currently on its fourth season, set to premiere on Sept. 28.

Stars: Jackie Chan, Andy On, Liu Haocun, Kevin Guo, Xing Yu | Written and Directed by Larry Yang
Jackie Chan’s latest film, Ride On, is a long way from what most of us have come to expect from its star. Rather than an all-out action film mixing lots of fight scenes and physical comedy, this has been dubbed an“action dramedy” by its makers. Those makers include writer/director Larry Yang, known for dramas such as Adoring and Sorry I Love You. This is another way of saying it’s a serious film about family and the choices we make in life with some fight scenes and the occasional joke about getting a faceful of horse farts.
Lao Luo is a stuntman who has seen better days. He scrapes by these days working as an extra or posing for pictures with his stunt horse Red Hare. In an eventful few hours,...

"Crash" winning Best Picture over "Brokeback Mountain" is easily one of the biggest upsets in modern Oscar history. The Academy's decision was already highly contentious and has only aged like sour milk in the decades since. Ang Lee's tragic romance, on the other hand, remains a touchstone for positive queer representation in mainstream cinema. To dismiss it as the embodiment of the "Bury Your Gays" trope is to approach the film in a vacuum. At a time when homophobic humor intended to assuage the insecurities of straight audiences was commonplace in Hollywood, Lee and his "Brokeback" actors dared to take the story of two men falling in love seriously.
According to Deadline, the tale of cowboys Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist is getting a new lease on life thanks to a London stage production based on Annie Proulx's original 1997 short story (not Lee's movie). Mike Faist and...

If only Joel were vegan, maybe he could’ve prevented the end of the world in “The Last of Us.”
PETA has released a new commercial, airing on TV this weekend ahead of HBO’s “The Last of Us” season finale, that uses some very familiar scenery and music to warn against the dangers of eating meat. The ad also uses a young female orphan in the video, attempting to draw parallels to Bella Ramsey’s character Ellie on “The Last of Us.”
In the video, the girl walks around a run-down, post-apocalyptic city while listing off all the rules that parents give their children — which, typically, don’t include eating vegan.
“You said it was your job to protect me. You were always telling me what not to do. ‘Don’t run with a lollipop in your mouth. Don’t touch the light socket. Don’t go near the stove.

German director Roland Emmerich made "The Noah's Ark Principle" in Germany in 1984 -- a student film with a budget of over a million Deutschmarks -- and never looked back. He quickly helmed two English-language family films, followed by a move into the worlds of action and science fiction in the 1990s. The peak Emmerich movie is probably still "Independence Day," although his other action and disaster movies -- "The Day After Tomorrow," "2012," "White House Down," and "Moonfall" -- are the connoisseur's choices.
Emmerich (both wisely and unwisely) stretches himself into other genres -- such as the war movies "The Patriot" and "Midway," and the historical dramas "Anonymous" and "Stonewall." It's good to see him pushing himself, taking risks, and experimenting, even if the end results are mixed, to say the least. But he excels at big-budget action movies, and if he's given actors blessed with the necessary star quality to build his beautiful disasters around,...

The Nightcrawler star was fascinated by Ayer’s script the moment it reached his hands. So much so that it woke up an already exhausted Gyllenhaal who was tired because of his work schedule.

If there's a large metropolitan city living on the edge of a water bank, chances are that Roland Emmerich has destroyed it. There's almost no section of the planet that the disaster connoisseur behind "Independence Day," "The Day After Tomorrow," and "2012" hasn't demolished for the sake of our entertainment. Although disaster movies have waned down since their rise in popularity, that doesn't mean Emmerich has slowed down one bit. Destroy Earth enough times and you seek a bigger target, so why not just go for the moon?
Last year's "Moonfall" follows Emmerich's cinematic conventions down to a tee, complete with the strained father/son relationship, comedic relief scientist, an all-star cast, and a buffet of destruction. The issue isn't that we've seen all of this before, but we've seen it done better by Emmerich himself, although /Film's Chris Evangelista seemed to have a great time according to his review.

Jack Quaid is best known for his role as Hughie Campbell in the Prime TV series "The Boys," but you may have also seen him in blockbuster films like "The Hunger Games" and "Scream." If you're wondering when he'll hit the big screen again, it's actually very soon because Jack is set to appear in the star-studded film "Oppenheimer," which hits theaters in July.
Jack has definitely come a long way since making his film debut in 2012, and if his name sounds familiar to you, that's because he comes from a famous family. Jack's father is seasoned actor Dennis Quaid, whose career spans decades and credits include "The Big Easy," "The Parent Trap," and "The Day After Tomorrow." Jack's mother, Meg Ryan, has an equally impressive résumé, as she's been in a bunch of our favorite romantic comedies like "When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle," and "You've Got Mail.

I am by no means a film snob and like my movies in all shapes and sizes. I did my graduate research on Scorsese, and yet I host a B-movie podcast. The point is, every movie is different, and that's a good thing. Some carry important social messages, others are brimming with artistic merit, and sometimes movies are meant to be pure entertainment.
In 2019 Martin Scorsese took Marvel Studios to task in saying, "that's not cinema." His sentiment is nothing new. The art vs. spectacle debate has been happening since the silent era of film. Then, Erich von Stroheim made lengthy, plodding films that were layered in irony and rooted in realism. On the other end of the spectrum, Cecil B. DeMille produced fanciful movies that were more style than substance and made to grab larger audiences.
Not that I'd dare argue movies with Scorsese (so my humble apologies if...
