Exclusive: Michael MacMillan retired from the world of television 17 years ago. Except, he didn’t.
The Canadian film and TV producer and business exec had made his name as CEO and Chairman of Alliance Atlantis, the company that built the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation franchise into a worldwide phenomenon, before its broadcast unit was sold off in 2007 to Canwest Communications and Goldman Sachs — making a lot of cash and taking a well-earned early retirement.
However, just four years later, he was back to do it all again.
MacMillan launched Blue Ant Media in 2011, originally as a Canadian channel operator, much the same as Alliance Atlantis had operated. However, just like his previous company, network ownership was only a means to an end — owning content was always the real play.
In the 13 years that have followed, Blue Ant has transformed from a channel operator to a content company playing in the international rights ownership game,...

With production kicking off on Monday (17 April), it has now been announced that The Oc star Mischa Barton will make an appearance in the new series.
Barton will arrive in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough as Reece, an American who is new to the area and “not quite who she appears to be”.
Speaking about joining the soap, Barton, 37, said: “I’m excited to be part of this iconic show’s next chapter, and I am really looking forward to being back in Australia, a place I know and love!

First responders arrive to find attorney Robert Wone already dead in the guest room. When Alexandra Dean signed on to direct “Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies” for Peacock, she had high hopes that the series would help people understand the Casey Anthony murder case, which Time magazine previously dubbed the social media trial of the century, in a new light.
Anthony, now 36, was found not guilty of murdering her two-year-old daughter Caylee during a 2011 trial that captivated the country. Anthony was charged with her daughter’s murder in 2008.
“My biggest hope for the series is that it provokes really profound conversations around how people like Casey are portrayed by the media,” Dean told Variety. “I hope it makes people think more critically about where they’re getting their information. If it’s from an outlet that covers a court case from one side and doesn’t want to hear from anyone not on their side, then they don’t have the full story.

For eight weeks in the summer of 2011, the world was glued to the “social media trial of the century.” Facing the death penalty was Casey Anthony, then 25, accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, and dumping the body in a wooded area near her parents’ home in Orlando, Florida.
The circumstantial evidence against her was compelling — including a 911 call made by her mother in which she described the smell of a decomposing body in Anthony’s car — but Anthony was found not guilty of murdering her daughter.
She was sentenced to four years, one year for each lie she told police; with three years time served, she had only 10 days left in custody before walking free.
No one was more outraged by that turn of events than Nancy Grace, the prosecutor-turned-tv pundit who dubbed Anthony the “Tot Mom” and who covered the case...

This month, Peacock is revisiting one of the most notorious trials of the 2010s with “Where the Truth Lies,” a limited series exploring the 2011 trial of Casey Anthony. The streamer released the first trailer for the three-part docuseries, which premieres November 29.
In 2008, police arrested Anthony for the murder of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, who was reported missing by her grandmother. Shortly after, Caylee’s remains were found inside a laundry bag in the woods near the Anthonys’ house. After a widely publicized trial where Anthony chose not to testify, a jury found her not guilty in 2011, prompting widespread backlash and outrage in the media.
“Where the Truth Lies” features extensive sitdowns with Anthony, speaking on the record for the first time. The interviews will explore Anthony’s account of the investigation, the trial and its aftermath. The series also features never-before-seen footage from the trial and insights into the defense’s evidence.

Peacock has announced “Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies,” a limited docuseries featuring interviews with Anthony about the investigation, trial and media spectacle regarding accusations that she murdered her daughter, Caylee Anthony.
“Why talk to me now when you’re not getting creative control?” an interviewer asks Anthony in the trailer. The brief footage concludes with the intertitle, “Casey Anthony Speaks.”
“Where the Truth Lies” will debut on Peacock on Nov. 29. The three-part limited series, helmed by director and showrunner Alexandra Dean, features material from Casey’s own archive and behind-the-scenes footage.
“Since her acquittal in 2011, public opinion of Casey Anthony has been largely shaped by the media convinced of her guilt,” Dean said in a statement. “What emerges over the course of multiple interviews recorded over six months is a startling psychological portrait of Casey Anthony and a complete narrative of what she says happened to her daughter weighed...

Alison Lohman rarely gets recognized anymore, and that’s just the way she likes it.
It helps that Lohman has long since left Hollywood, an industry that made anonymity impossible for her in the early aughts when the Palm Springs native was one of the most in-demand talents in town. A self-described shy child who was obsessed with musicals, Lohman got her start on stage before her 10th birthday by performing in community theater in the desert in productions of The Sound of Music, Kiss Me, Kate and Annie before moving to Los Angeles around the time she turned 18.
Though she initially toyed with the idea of a music career or studying drama at NYU (where she got accepted), Lohman’s destiny unfolded on the West Coast where acting work came quickly and consistently, mostly on the small screen to start with bit...

Marvel’s first full-length Eternals trailer doesn’t reveal much about the plot, but it sets a mood. The film is directed and co-written by Chloé Zhao, who won Best Picture and Best Director for Nomadland, a heart-wrenching journey through a desolate landscape. The song featured in the Eternals trailer has been evoking tragic isolation for years. It played on an endless loop in 1999’s Girl, Interrupted. It foretold the zombie apocalypse in the first teaser trailers for The Walking Dead. But the song has even sadder roots than that.
“Throughout the years we have never interfered, until now,” we hear a disembodied female voice (likely Salma Hayek’s Ajak) observe in the trailer. If gods or goddesses stopped bad things from happening to good people, a lot of great music may never exist. The music for the song “The End of the World” was composed by New York City-born Arthur Kent.

[Editor's Note: This post is presented in partnership with Time Warner Cable Movies On Demand in support of Indie Film Month. Today's pick, "The Captive," is available now On Demand. This interview originally ran during the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.] Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan has been a fixture on La Croisette since his 1994 breakout feature "Exotica," which took the Fipresci prize. "The Sweet Hereafter" won that same award in addition to the Grand Prix honor in 1997. The filmmaker's career has by no means taken a nosedive since, but to many, he hasn't lived up to the promise set by his earlier efforts (save for "Felicia's Journey," which featured a great performance by the late Bob Hoskins). Ryan Reynolds and Mirielle Enos star in the forthcoming thriller The Captive, directed by Atom Egoyan. A new trailer's here...

Atom Egoyan's the Canadian director behind such acclaimed films as The Sweet Hereafter and Where The Truth Lies, while his most recent feature was last year's crime thriller, Devil's Knot.
The Captive is another thriller, this one starring Ryan Reynolds and Mirieille Enos as a husband and wife whose daughter vanishes, only to suddenly reappear again eight years later. Then the parents discover that they've been spied on the whole time. What's that all about?
The intriguing premise is joined by a great supporting cast, including Rosario Dawson, Bruce Greenwood and the great Kevin Durand. Early reviews from Cannes weren't glowing, but the frosty, paranoid atmosphere in the trailer (below) still leaves us wanting to know what happens next.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a grizzled father clashes with a troubled detective as they search for the former’s missing daughter in the dead of winter, in this thriller from a Canadian director. You’re stopping me? Great. We’re not talking about Denis Villenueve’s strikingly moody, logically suspect Prisoners, though, but Atom Egoyan’s similarly titled and thoroughly lunkheaded The Captive. Before the opening credits have ended, we meet not only the captive herself, a teenage girl named Cassandra (Alexia Fast), but her captor, Mika (Kevin Durand), a preening real estate developer with a suitably pervy mustache. It’s been eight years since Cassandra’s abduction near Niagara Falls, but Mika has only recently begun taunting her estranged parents, Matthew (Ryan Reynolds) and Tina (Mireille Enos), covertly broadcasting their renewed anguish for an unseen audience and still stumping the authorities, chief among them Detectives Dunlop (Rosario Dawson) and Cornwall (Scott Speedman...

Unfortunately, according to the majority of critics in the room for today's world premiere at Cannes,...

The 2014 Cannes Film Festival launches on Wednesday, and with it comes a slew of films sure to shock, surprise and provoke, just as last year's Palme d'Or winner "Blue is the Warmest Color" did when it world premiered at the event. Here are 10 films that could potentially follow suit. "The Captive," dir. Atom Egoyan Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan has been a fixture on La Croisette since his 1994 breakout feature "Exotica," which took the Fipresci prize. "The Sweet Hereafter" won that same award in addition to the Grand Prix honor in 1997. The filmmaker’s career has by no means taken a nosedive since, but to many, he hasn’t lived up to the promise set by his earlier efforts (save for "Felicia’s Journey," which featured a great performance by the late Bob Hoskins). "Where the Truth Lies," "Adoration" and "Chloe" were all met with mixed reviews, while his latest, the...

As the tagline from the latest Atom Egoyan film, Devil's Knot (review), states, “They say the crimes were satanic. The truth may be scarier.” Based on the convictions of the men accused of the "West Memphis Three" murders, it focuses on the families and legal aspects of the case.
We recently chatted with director Egoyan about how he became involved in the project, which describes how Jessie Misskelley, Jr., Jason Baldwin, and Damien Echols (aka the West Memphis Three) were exonerated and released after serving nearly 20 years in prison.
He also touched on why he chose to focus on some lesser known principals from the case, the challenges of bringing this story to the screen, what he learned about the U.S. justice system while making the film, and more.

Welcome back to Cannes Check, In Contention's annual preview of the films in Competition at next month's Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 14. Taking on different selections every day, we'll be examining what they're about, who's involved and what their chances are of snagging an award from Jane Campion's jury. Next up, the third Canadian director in the lineup: Atom Egoyan's "The Captive." The director: Atom Egoyan (Canadian, 53 years old). There was a time when Egoyan looked to be as estimable a festival fixture as his compatriot David Cronenberg, but his career hasn't moved in the direction many thought it would after he won big at Cannes (and scooped a surprise Best Director Oscar nod) for 1997's critical peak “The Sweet Hereafter.” Born in Cairo to Armenian-Egyptian parents – a heritage he'd later explore in his 2002 film “Ararat” – Egoyan largely grew up in British Columbia and studied...

Devil’s Knot, a docudrama about the tangled and still-loaded West Memphis Three case, directed by Atom Egoyan, is for the most part a tense and absorbing movie. It’s the intelligent, detail-jammed, well-executed version of what we used to call “a TV movie” — a phrase you can’t really use anymore, since it once connoted a certain second-rate, connect-the-dots Madame Tussauds biopic quality that’s become irrelevant in the age of HBO. (There was never a “TV movie” like Behind the Candelabra or Recount.) Yet that term also summoned up the basic, childlike voyeuristic appeal of seeing interesting actors...

That chunk o’hunk, Ryan Reynolds proves he’s not afraid to cry. Or wear a hat. At least in this first image from the upcoming thriller, Queen Of The Night he isn’t. The latest from director Atom Egoyan tells the story of a grieving father struggling to come to terms with the fate of his missing daughter. Reynolds is joined by Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson, Mireille Enos and Kevin Durand.
From the looks of this photo, it might turn out to be…well, a bit of a spoiler. Scope it out below, then judge for yourself after reading the film’s official synopsis:
In Atom Egoyan’s new thriller, Queen Of The Night, Ryan Reynolds plays Matthew, the father of an abducted child, Cass. Eight years after his daughter’s abduction, a series of disturbing clues surface, convincing Matthew that Cass, now 17, is still alive. In a terrifying race against time,...

Rosario Dawson is yet another actress that has begun to work a lot, and then not always on the most convincing projects. This week, she’s been added to the cast of Atom Egoyan’s thriller-ish Queen Of The Night, playing an investigator opposite Ryan Reynolds.
Queen Of The Night has Reynolds starring as a man who comes to believe that his abducted daughter is still alive. He presumably will share this information with Dawson, who will initially not believe him but then come to realize that a man with abs like that must be right. And so, the chase is on!
I might sound facetious, but I feel facetious. I mean, I like Reynolds, but the plot as it stands sounds generic and predictable. I would love to see these two in a really dynamic film. Unless Egoyan has some interesting twists and clever cinematography up his sleeve for Queen Of The Night,...

I’m still getting used to the strange notion that they’re making a film of the West Memphis 3 case – arguably the case most influenced by film in history. And every time I get used to it, the project gets a little weirder.
Today, the West Memphis 3 film, The Devil’s Knot, poured on another portion of strange by journeyman actor Alessandro Nivola in a starring role.
To shed a little light on this oddity, here’s some background on the West Memphis 3 murders and trial: 3 pre-teen boys turn up stripped, bound and butchered in a West Memphis, Arkansas, gully back in the early ’90s. The cops respond to the local uproar by sweating a learning-disabled metal-head into giving a confession against himself and two other teens. The entire case falls apart when objective thinking so much as sneezes at it, but hysteria and a hanging judge see to it...

As director Atom Egoyan puts the pieces (and the funding) together for Devil's Knot, the new dramatic film based on the West Memphis Three case, he's turned to someone he's worked with before to fill one of the leading roles: Colin Firth.
The actor, who co-starred in Egoyan's Where The Truth Lies, is on board to play private investigator Ron Lax, who has been a key crusader for the three men at the centre of the case. He agreed to help build the defense evidence for Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelly Jr after they were accused of, and imprisoned for, the murder of three eight-year-old boys in 1993. The trio served 17 years in prison (with Echols on death row) before being freed after a long campaign to prove their innocence.

With Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's "Paradise Lost" trilogy, the Peter Jackson-produced "West of Memphis" and a plethora of books and other material about the West Memphis Three, you might think the subject was all done. Far from it. Last year "The Devil's Knot" started heading into production from Canadian director Atom Egoyan ("Exotica," "Chloe," "The Sweet Hereafter") with Reese Witherspoon to star. Now another Academy Award winner is coming on board. Colin Firth, who previously teamed with Egoyan on "Where the Truth Lies," has joined the film. 'Devil's Knot' will take a different tack than the documentaries, getting out of the courtroom and taking a look at how the murder impacted the lives of those in the community. Witherspoon will play Pam Hobbs, one of the mothers of the victims who eventually becomes convinced that Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr. have been.

At this point we know absolutely nothing about Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy, but we can confirm that Josh Brolin will play as the lead character who is randomly kidnapped off the streets and imprisoned for 15 years, only to be let out and given just an ounce of clues as to who may have done this to him.
We can also confirm that Colin Firth was offered the role of the kidnapper at one point, but he turned it down. I really wish Firth hadn’t turn down the role as it would be a great departure from the normal good-guy character he usually plays. It would have also added more depth to Firth’s American repertoire, since people in the states haven’t seen films like Apartment Zero and Where the Truth Lies.
But with Colin Firth gone, Spike Lee is considering other actors for the kidnapper role in Oldboy.

Reese Witherspoon and director Atom Egoyan are teaming up to tell the story of the West Memphis Three.
Egoyan, the director of "Chloe" and "Where the Truth Lies," was announced as the director of "Devil's Knot," the film about the West Memphis Three, shortly after the murder defendants were found not guilty on Aug. 19. Now, "Devil's Knot" has claimed Witherspoon as its first cast member, according to Deadline.
"Devil's Knot" chronicles the 1993 murders of three children in West Memphis, Ak, with the three teenagers who were convicted of the crime coming to be called the West Memphis Three. The teens were incarcerated in 1994 and accused of being devil worshipers until they were found not guilty and released this past summer.
Reese Witherspoon will be playing Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of the murder victims who initially believes the trio murdered her son but is eventually persuaded that the three suspects are innocent.

Subject: Colin Firth, 50-year old English actor
Date of Assessment: March 30, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: Underrated, mainstream
Negative Buzzwords: Stiff, posh, bore
The Case: The good news, as accurately declared by Colin Firth in his recent (Best Actor) Oscar acceptance speech, is that his career really has just peaked. The bad news, however, is that in the event of a career peak, a downward slide might be inevitable. In the best case scenario, it is entirely possible Firth could parlay his Oscar win into more exposure for the sorts of roles that he's played before and for which he hasn't yet received proper recognition.
Most of us know Firth as the quintessential Englishman and for good reason. He's quite notorious for his straight-out-of-the-novel portrayal of Mr. Darcy in the six-episode miniseries Pride and Prejudice, in which he performed the classic Regency version of a one-man wet t-shirt contest. Indeed, there's something strange...

Last week HeyUGuys were invited to attend the Alfred Dunhill BAFTA A Life in Pictures event and in an extended interview on stage at BAFTA Headquarters along with critic, writer and broadcaster Francine Stock, was BAFTA Award Winner and Academy Award Nominee Colin Firth. Greeted with rapturous applause, Firth’s appearance had the audience on tenterhooks as we were privy to a thoroughly engaging evening dedicated to one of Britain’s most respected, versatile and beloved actors.
Having appeared in a variety of critically-acclaimed television, film and theatre productions, Firth’s career shows no signs of slowing down at the age of 50. Much like a fine wine, his body of work just keeps on getting better and better. From his humble family roots in Grayshott, Hampshire, Firth’s journey into acting began as a sprightly 5 year old, whose determination to act was made touchingly clear by his penchant for playing...

Colin Firth and Natalie Portman will be respectively presented the Desert Palm Achievement Award for Actor and Actress at the 22nd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. The Awards Gala will kick off the 2011 awards season on Saturday, January 8 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
This award is very fitting for both actors. Firth is receiving major Oscar buzz for his performance as King George VI in "The King's Speech," and Portman for Darren Aronofsky's "The Black Swan."
I'm excited for these two actors, and I'm excited for the Film fest. I'm a Palm Springs resident so this is good news! Here's the complete press release:

Actor who was at his best in shadowy roles
The actor Maury Chaykin, who has died aged 61 after a heart-valve infection, was an American and a Canadian citizen, and his career reflected his dual nationality. In the Us, he was a familiar face, if not a recognisable name, playing small but telling roles in major films. His breakthrough came in Dances With Wolves (1990), playing Major Fambrough, who sends Kevin Costner on his frontier assignment and then kills himself. Chaykin's only leading role was in the cable TV series A Nero Wolfe Mystery (2001), as the titular detective who refuses to leave his house, delegating that to his assistant (Timothy Hutton).
In Canada, Chaykin was something of a national treasure. He won a Genie award for best actor for his performance as a Brian Wilson-like burned-out rock star in Whale Music (1994), gave remarkable performances in three films directed by Atom Egoyan...

Madness reigns in Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island, while Jim Carrey's gurning spoils I Love You Phillip Morris
Having finally won a long overdue best director Oscar for one of his most solidly pedestrian works (The Departed), Martin Scorsese cuts himself some cultural slack with Shutter Island, a romping old-fashioned psychodrama replete with murderous plots, ghostly visions and the kind of split personality disorders beloved of campy exploitation cinema. In the paranoid 50s, war vet turned Us marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is sent to the titular madhouse to investigate the disappearance of a dangerous inmate. Cut off by fogs and storms, and increasingly detached from the "real world", the patients and carers of this gothic establishment seem to have descended into some form of communal madness, presided over by the quietly sinister Dr John Cawley (Ben Kingsley, featuring villainous bald-cum-untrustworthy facial hair combo) and his Nazi-sounding associate Dr...

"Award-winning actor Maury Chaykin, a familiar face in Canadian movies and TV shows since the 1970s, died Tuesday on his 61st birthday," reports the Toronto Sun.
"Boasting an impressive 153 film and television credits, Chaykin was known in and out of the land of the maple leaf," writes Monika Bartyzel at Cinematical. "In Canada, he graced a number of Atom Egoyan films including The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica, and Where the Truth Lies, he teamed up with Don McKellar (who recently lost wife Tracy Wright) on Blindness and Cooking with Stella, and more recently played Sam Blecher in the Mark McKinney-produced Less Than Kind. But his accomplishments and impact reached stateside features as well. Chaykin played Major Fambrough in Dances with Wolves, Sam Tipton in My Cousin Vinny, and in recent years, he played 'Harvey Weingard' — aka 'Harvey Weinstein' — in Entourage."
