As of now, there is a lot of uncertainty around Covid when it comes to Broadway. Within the past couple of months, several shows had to suspend performances due to positive cases in their casts, some others had to close permanently, and a couple more are taking hiatuses. The American Theatre Wing also hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet.
With that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are currently 11 productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tonys? Below is an overview of each play as well as the awards histories of their authors, cast, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Skeleton Crew” (opened January 26; closes February 20)

As the Hollywood blockbuster machine continues to dust itself off and release some early winter hits, Hulu is going in a bit of a different direction with its list of new releases for November 2021.
There are no big Hulu original films of note this month. Instead there’s a whole host of original series. The TV parade starts on Nov. 5 with the release of Animaniacs season 2. Also getting a second season this month is monarchal comedy The Great on Nov. 19. The most intriguing series, however, is animated Marvel comedy Marvel’s Hit Monkey. As its name so graciously implies, this is a show about a hit monkey…as in monkey assassin. Naturally the hit monkey is haunted by the ghost of Jason Sudeikis because it’s important that everything make sense.
Though Hulu doesn’t have any original movies in November, its list of library movie titles is quite vast.

Mentoring emerging cinematographers has always been a key mission at the EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival and this year’s online version of the event features a score of streaming master classes and seminars that inform and offer insights from top filmmakers and technology experts.
Streaming through the end of 2020 (online.energacamerimage.pl), the talks and teach-ins are, with rare exceptions, accessible without a password or online Camerimage entry card – unlike the usual live format of master classes at the festival, which invariably sell out if you don’t find a seat at least 20 minutes before the start.
One of the buzziest events from the festival, which officially ran Nov. 13-20, is the virtual career masterclass with cinematographer Phedon Papamichael, in which he discusses his remarkable career, leading up to his latest feature, Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

It seems like every year there’s a reason to revisit Oscar Isaac and the work that he’s done so far. This year, he may actually get that elusive first Academy Award nomination if things break the right way, but regardless of that, he remains an incredibly exciting actor. Oscar wise (no pun intended), he seems likeliest to contend with George Clooney’s directorial outing Suburbicon, though he also will be seen in a few days in what previously was seen as an awards player in The Promise. Throw in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and he’s an in demand actor, to say the least. As such, another repeat tribute to the man is certainly in order. Isaac deserves it, that’s for sure. This is how I would rank his ten best performances so far: 10. Robin Hood 9. The Two Faces of January 8. In Secret 7. Mojave 6. Star Wars...

In the effort to stay au courant we'll alternate between Netflix and Amazon Prime for streaming news each week. And we'll freeze frame select titles at random places just for fun and see what image comes up. You know how we do!
Last Chance Amazon Prime
Felton: I look... is distinguished a word?
Lange: It's a word.
In Secret (2014, expires August 18th)
What is this? Oscar Isaac, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Felton and Jessica Lange? Big name casts for movies that don't seem to actually exist that you suddenly realize do, in fact, exist, are kind of unnerving. Like how do movies that never really get released find financing to get made in the first place? Apparently Oscar Isaac plays an artist in this one (they're looking at a portrait he painted of Felton) so that's kind of smudgy hot regardless. Isaac with paint stains I mean.
Men weren't up to the task!

According to TVLine, the CW’s hit superhero drama The Flash has recruited Harry Potter star Tom Felton to join Season 3 in a series regular role.
Felton will play Julian Dorn, a fellow CSI at the Central City Police Department who suspects there’s more to Barry Allen than just his good guy reputation. The site also says that Felton is expected to make his Flash debut in the early installments during Season 3.
Season 3 of The Flash is taking on the DC Comics’ famous Flashpoint storyline, and as to how Felton will figure into the plot is yet unknown.
Felton is best known for portraying the notorious sorcerer Draco Malfoy in all eight Harry Potter films. Other film credits include Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, The Apparition, In Secret, Belle, Against The Sun and Risen.

Tough, unanswerable human questions frame spectacular, innovative action sequences that are like superhero ballets. This series just keeps getting better. I’m “biast” (pro): love the Marvel movies
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
What is the best way to deploy vastly superior abilities against less capable but nevertheless still very dangerous bad guys? How best to minimize collateral damage — of both the human and the infrastructure kind — when those vastly superior abilities are put to their use? What happens when people of good conscience, all of whom genuinely want nothing more than to increase net happiness and general well-being in the world, disagree over the answers to these questions? And who should get the final say: politicians sitting at desks thousands of miles away from the fields of battle, or the soldiers fighting those battles?

Initially intriguing detective tale of ancient Rome hops genres into fantasy, with a strange manic-preacher-dream-boy seduction of its pragmatic protagonist. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

There are lots of novels, but I can’t think of a single other movie in the mold of Risen, an initially intriguing mystery tale in which a politically ambitious Roman soldier, Clavius (Joseph Fiennes [Hercules, Running with Scissors], who is terrific here), is set to a policing task by Pilate (Peter Firth: Spooks: The Greater Good, Pearl Harbor), the Roman governor of the province of Judea in the Middle East. It seems that the followers of a local rabble-rousing preacher who was just executed believe that...

Chicago – Another year is about to slide towards the next one, so it’s time to look back at the cinema universe of 2015, the 10 Best Films of the year. In this arena, the intrepid “Über Critic” of HollywoodChicago.com, Patrick McDonald, will attempt to give his spin on the “best of” point of view.
And now we switch from third person to first person, so I – the aforementioned Patrick McDonald – will attempt to claim it all. It was another roller coaster year of robots, driving machines, pop stars, financial derivatives and Miss Universe. In other words, another year of inventive film creativity and philosophy.
This is the 2015 honorable mention section, and there were so many “eleventh place” films of note. My favorite superhero film was “Ant-Man,” for their mix of “small time” adventure and comedy. The dramas “Brooklyn,” “Sicario,” “Flowers,” “The Farewell Party,” “Nasty Baby” and “Spotlight” were excellent experiences.

Read More: 11 Controversial Documentaries That Challenged the Status Quo In 1948, years after the end of World War II, Jewish American pilots smuggled planes out of the Unites States and flew for Israel during the Arab-Israeli War. Nancy Spielberg, sister of Steven, has brought their story to film in the documentary "Above and Beyond," for which Indiewire has the exclusive poster premiere above. The film's official synopsis reads: "In 1948, just three years after the liberation of Nazi death camps, a group of Jewish American pilots answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. As members of Machal - "volunteers from abroad" - this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war; they also embarked on personal journeys of discovery and renewed Jewish pride.

What has Jimmy McGill been after during this season of Better Call Saul? What has been his prime motivation? Before “Pimento,” one could say that his main goal was to make something of his University of American Samoa law degree and be a self-sufficient attorney. One could also have said he wanted the affections of Kim by his side – and in an office with wide windows and a reception area, no less. One could have just said he wanted to get paid as frequently as possible, with him being susceptible to Kettleman bribes and skateboarding cons. However, as the cold open last week suggested and “Pimento” proved, Jimmy has most wanted the respect and admiration of his brother, Chuck.
The justice he hoped to seek with his brother at the end of “Rico” is torn by the closing moments of “Pimento,” written and directed by Thomas Schnauz. Despite caring for...

Cymbeline
Written for the screen and directed by Michael Almereyda
USA, 2014
Cymbeline is director Michael Almereyda’s second Shakespeare adaptation set in modern day, his last being 2000’s Hamlet, also starring Ethan Hawke. The Bard’s late work tragedy, previously set in the Royal Court of Olde England, receives a face-lift, updated to a war between the Roman police force and the Briton Motorcycle Club ran by Cymbeline (Ed Harris). The King trades in a crown for an Uzi and a leather jacket as a drug kingpin troubled by familial strife. His second wife (the serpentine Milla Jovovich) despises Cymbeline’s daughter, Imogen (Dakota Johnson, proving she has acting chops not found in Fifty Shades of Grey), for not marrying her son, Cloten (Anton Yelchin).
In secret, Imogen has pledged herself to Posthumus (Penn Badgley), much to Cymbeline’s displeasure. Posthumus, like all men freshly betrothed, proceeds to make a...

What will February bring to Netflix? "House of Cards" returns for its much awaited third season, but not until Feb. 27. If you can't wait for your Kevin Spacey fix until then, "Now: In the Wings on a World Stage" (2014), a documentary of Spacey starring in a production of Shakespeare's "Richard III," is available on Feb. 1.
And the 2004 "King Arthur," starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightley, isn't exactly Shakespearean, but look at how many great actors -- like Mads Mikkelsen, Ioan Gruffudd, Hugh Dancy and Joel Edgerton -- have gone on to much bigger things.
You can also stream "Joe," one of Nicolas Cage's best films in recent years; the overlooked indie "The Brothers Bloom" with Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody and Rachel Weisz; and the barely-in-theaters thriller "The Two Faces of January," starring Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst.
Here's a much larger rundown of what's new on Netflix in February 2015, provided by Netflix.

There’s nothing fresh or even usefully true in its cartoonish dichotomy about men, but this pseudo-sf flick will expound upon it with pretentious tedium. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a big science fiction geek
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
There’s a moment, Ex Machina’s big visual smack in the face, in which writer-director Alex Garland, probably unwittingly, reveals his hand. It’s imagery that, I would be utterly unsurprised to learn, was something that popped into his head disconnected from anything else, imagery he deemed so cool, so you-guys-gotta-see-this!, that he set himself then and there to building a story around it. I’m not, of course, going to spoil what this moment consists of, but suffice to say that it could have just as readily been slotted into a story about a serial killer.

Netflix has just released their lists of what films and TV shows we will see added in February…and what films and TV shows will vanish.
First, the good news: quite a few classic and popular TV shows are making the grade on the streaming service, including the first five seasons of Mash, Hawaii 5-0, and the new season of House of Cards. New additions to the film list include RoboCop, The Brothers Bloom, and Gimme Shelter. While there’s not a lot of quality stuff on offer, there are at least a few new films and TV shows that we can enjoy on the Netflix streaming service.
Now for the bad news: quite a number of favorites are going to vanish from Netflix come February 1. Among these are several James Bond films, Zodiac, Jane Eyre, and Dredd. The TV shows fare even worse, with tons of BBC shows expiring,...

Katie Hopkins received a secret honesty task in tonight's (January 7) Celebrity Big Brother launch.
After chatting to host Emma Willis, Katie was the first celeb to enter the Big Brother house where she received her mission.
She was told by the Enchanted Mirror that she needed to give "brutally honest opinions" of her fellow celebrities in 140 characters or less, while sitting in a separate room.
At the end of the night, Katie would then need to choose the two least-entertaining housemates.
Katie first joked that she was concerned Ken Morley had left "the care home", whilst also saying she wouldn't want to be sat next to Perez Hilton on a bus.
She went on to describe Alexander O'Neal as "a real disappointment" - and told Big Brother off for surrounding her with a bunch of "lunatics" - before admitting that she thought Nadia Sawalha would be a fairly normal housemate.

For its 50th anniversary, Roundabout Theatre Company has tapped a major star to lead the company’s first Broadway production of the 2015-2016 season. Keira Knightley will make her Broadway debut in a newly commissioned adaptation of Therese Raquin, written by Helen Edmundson and directed by Evan Cabnet (The Performers). The play will begin previews on Oct. 1, 2015, in anticipation of an Oct. 29 opening. Based on the novel by Emile Zola, Therese Raquin tells the love and lust-filled story of an unhappily married woman whose complacent, loveless union to her sickly cousin is flipped by the arrival of a passionate lover.

★★☆☆☆Longing, passion and an illicit love affair should be ripe material for any romping period drama. Sadly, actor-turned-director Charlie Stratton's adaptation of Neal Bell's play, In Secret (2013) - which is in turn based upon Émile Zola's 1867 novel Thérèse Raquin - is a tonally perplexing disappointment that fails to truly wrestle with the themes provided. Production designer Uli Hanisch's sets plunge us into a rather dank 19th century France - with an overly robust enthusiasm for greys - and it's in this world that we meet Thérèse (Elizabeth Olsen, also seen in Godzilla this week). Born out of wedlock, Thérèse is shipped off to live with her seemingly kind, but more accurately conniving aunt, Madame Raquin (Jessica Lang).

Tom Felton has signed with Gersh, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned. The English actor won two MTV Movie Awards and one Teen Choice Award for tormenting Harry Potter throughout the blockbuster wizard franchise. In 2011, the same year he played Draco Malfoy for the final time, he co-starred as a cruel primate shelter guard in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. At last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Felton came of age in two period romances – In Secret (then called Therese), where he held up the losing end of a love triangle with Elizabeth Olsen and

Five years after Battle of the Smithsonian (and eight years after the first Night at the Museum), Ben Stiller will be stepping back into the role of night security guard Larry Daley this December for Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, the third and final installment in the series. Today, we’ve got the first images for the threequel, which Fox has released ahead of the film’s first trailer debut later this week.
As the images show, Larry is rejoined in this third installment by living museum exhibits Sacajawea (Mizuo Peck), Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams), Ahkmenrah (Rami Malek) and Attila the Hun (Patrick Gallagher), among others (expect big roles for Crystal the monkey, Owen Wilson’s Jedediah and Steve Coogan’s Octavius, as per usual). Additionally, Larry’s now-teenaged son Nick (Skyler Gisondo, replacing Jake Cherry) gets wrapped up in the action.

It’s been three and a half years since we first gazed at Oscar Isaac, and in that interim, his star has risen considerably. So I think it’s time to take a look at him again. Because in a movie like In Secret, you kinda can’t not look:
The Two Faces of January won’t open in the U.S. till autumn, but here’s a peek of what you’re in for:
In Inside Llewyn Davis, he held his own against a cat, which is quite a feat (though I deliberately chose a still without the cat):
Wow:
(If you have a suggestion for someone we should female-gaze at, feel free to email me with a name or a link to a particular photo. But check to see whom we’ve already gazed at.)...
