Ray Chan, the art director and production designer for Marvel Studios who contributed to Guardians of the Galaxy, three Avengers movies, the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine and more, has died. He was 56.
Chan died Tuesday near his home in Wales, his family announced. No cause of death was divulged.
“Ray truly was one of the best, in so many ways,” they said. “He had an exuberance for life, which was tragically cut short and will be sorely missed. He loved his career and lived a rich and wonderful life, and his memory will live on through all those he knew and the films he helped make happen.”
Chan served as supervising art director on Thor: The Dark World (2013), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Doctor Strange (2016) and the Avengers films Age of Ultron (2015), Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019).

For most performers, building up a resume of over 150 projects is something that takes an entire lifetime to achieve, but for James Franco that is a feat he has accomplished at just 45 years old. This Freaky Geek was catapulted to fame in one of biggest comic book franchises of all time before settling in to his role as a performer who can take on any genre and any film no matter how big or small. But with a tremendous rise at such a young age, sometimes you don’t make the best decisions. For Franco, those bad decisions would come to light on the very night of his greatest professional achievement and begin a downfall that is sadly all too common in today’s world. At one point putting out up to 12 projects a year, Franco has taken a backseat as allegations against him began to pile up. It is...

Not long after actor Philip Winchester — who co-stars with Megan Fox in the new hostage-rescue film Rogue — shot the war drama Flyboys in 2005, he received an unexpected gift. “We were given this incredible wrap gift of a Breitling Colt because of the whole aeronautic theme of the movie. I was renting a room of a friend in a tiny apartment in Santa Monica. I remember the energy and excitement of unwrapping this yellow Breitling box and wondering, ‘Is this really what’s in here?’ Not only did it symbolize finishing something, but it was just an act of kindness [from the producers],...

Freshly divorced from American-International Pictures, Roger Corman leaps into the filmic mainstream with a fairly large-scale World War One aviation picture. He competes with the big studios but retains his nonconformist attitude: his retelling of the story of the Red Baron fixates on the theme of the death of chivalry in combat. For his star player Corman picks John Phillip Law, whose on-screen persona is a good fit for one of the first warrior aces of the sky.

Dos Equis has a new Most Interesting Man in the World, and he looks an awful lot like Michael Phelps from 20 years in the future, who’s come back in time to take us on sexy, thrilling adventures. The beer brand (and its ad agency, Havas New York) have chosen to replace the former Most Interesting Man in the World, Jonathan Goldsmith, with Frenchman Augustin Legrand. Legrand, 41, has been around the French TV and film circuit since the early 2000s, occasionally popping up in an American film like “Flyboys.” Goldsmith, 77, spent 10 years as the Most Interesting Man in...

We have a list of the new Hulu movies and shows arriving in October 2018.
Happy Huluween!
Hulu is blessed to have a name that sounds roughly enough like "Hallow." That means it's basically honor-bound to bring the heat for Halloween. Thankfully for the October 2018 new releases, Hulu is bringing us the spookies that we need. The Blair Witch Project, The Others, and Child's Play all arrive this month. And if you're looking for some more wholesome creepies, The Nightmare Before Christmas should do. And if that weren't enough, Hulu is debuting its own horror show - anthology series Into the Dark.
For those shamefully unable to get into the Halloween spirit, Hulu is bringing in some other fun film options. Galaxy Quest, Music and Lyrics, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective should help out with that.
Then of course, are the usual and typically deep TV offerings.

Exclusive: Goldcrest nabs rights to Stonewall starring Jeremy Irvine ahead of Efm.
UK sales outfit Goldcrest Films has nabbed international rights to Roland Emmerich’s gay rights drama Stonewall, starring Jeremy Irvine, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ron Perlman and Joey King.
Warner Bros previously acquired rights in Germany while a Us deal is understood to be in the works.
Currently in post-production, Stonewall recreates the events that culminated in the riots outside the Stonewall Inn, Greenwich Village, in June 1969. The events are considered by many as a turning point in the gay rights movement.
Irvine plays Danny Winters, a young man who is kicked out of his home by his parents and flees to New York where, homeless and destitute, he befriends a group of street kids who soon introduce him to the watering hole of local drag queens, gays, lesbians and everything in between: the Mafia-run Stonewall Inn.
There he meets the suave Trevor (Meyers), but catches...

Howdy ladies and gentleman For this week’s spotlight piece, I wanted to go ahead and take a look at a rather unique A-lister. Someone who vacillates between humongous Hollywood blockbusters and odd little independent films, always doing his own thing. The A-lister in question? None other than James Franco. He’s many things to many people, but he’s unquestionably a star. He’s given a few incredibly good performances, but he’s never a boring actor to watch. He’s easily one of Tinseltown’s most interesting actors to follow. Almost constantly engaging in some form of art, Franco is at his core, just that…an artist. He may be a bit of a weirdo to some, but he’s an A-lister regardless and deserves this tribute. Franco wasn’t always considered a “weird” star. He got his start basically as a heartthrob. He first came on to...

Through films like Flightplan, Soul Plane, and White House Down, it has taken over a decade for Hollywood to arrive at Non-Stop.
Showing the vitality of Liam Neeson carrying a gun and a broken heart, Non-Stop recently gave the new action hero one of his biggest box office weekends so far. Involving an air marshal using a particular set of skills to hunt and kill someone threatening his plane (to paraphrase Taken), the film may seem like a generic Neeson actioner. But while his character might be a composite of previous roles, the anxiety he tackles within this film is fresh. Considering its box office success (and my mother’s intense experience in watching the movie), Non-Stop works efficiently as a thriller in 2014 because it provides viewers with imagery of in-flight chaos not seen since before 9/11. It is also the indication of a natural progression for how Hollywood films are...

Update: Scottish actor Peter Capaldi has been announced as the new Doctor.
The speculation about who will replace Matt Smith, becoming the 12th Doctor in Series 8 of "Doctor Who" is almost at it's end. The BBC is set to make a live announcement Sunday (August 4).
The moment it was announced Matt Smith would be departing the show, fans lit up the internet with ideas an rumors about who would fill his spot. Many wondered if the new Doctor would be black, with "Luther's" Idris Elba having his name passed around quite a bit.
Others have thought maybe it was time for a female Doctor, with Billie Piper a favorite. She, of course, played the first companion, Rose Tyler, when the series relaunched, starring with Christopher Eccleston (Nine) and David Tennant (Ten). She's also returning with Tennant for "Doctor Who's" 50th anniversary special.
However, If a tweet from celebrity photographer Rankin is any indication,...

Zombies, vampires and werewolves, oh my! Classic monsters are always a good way for horror filmmakers to go, but sometimes we see more... unique... beasties on the screen. And when they go well (and even when they don't), they're some of the most memorable characters in the genre.
In celebration of the Irish sci-fi comedy film Grabbers, which hit VOD and other digital outlets on July 19 and contains some pretty wild monsters of its own, we've compiled a list of Horror's Top 13 Craziest Monsters!
As always, we'd like to start out with some honorable mentions. Slither and its old school relative Night of the Creeps both gave us a swarm of memorable leech-like monsters. The Host dropped us into an unexpected nightmare on a typical South Korean afternoon with a very unique movie monster. Indie/horror flick Grabbers was released today, and by the looks of the trailer, it is awesome. If you aren’t already familiar with the premise, the movie takes place in a rural fishing town in Ireland, where a swarm of aliens invade the land by sea. The twist? The octopus-like creatures’ kryptonite is alcohol, so the only way innocent civilians can stay safe is to get hammered. The movie stars Richard Coyle (Prince of Persia: Sands of Time) and Ruth Bradley (Flyboys), and you can currently see it in select theatres or download it on iTunes or Amazon. Before you...

He made his name playing laidback stoners. Now Seth Rogen has written, directed and produced a send-up of his own super-successful comedy crew. Is it a happy accident – or is he the most driven man in Hollywood?
Seth Rogen is so exactly like his onscreen self that hanging out with him can feel a little like dropping into one of his movies. "Have just been advised Seth only needs 10 mins for grooming," reads one of the emails that shuttle between his publicists and the Guardian's photographer, which sounds about right. The roly-poly figure who turns up a few minutes later in jeans and T-shirt, topped off with jewfro and froggy grin, seems barely to need 10 minutes for anything. "Hey, what's going on?" he says, before settling into a sofa that looks custom-moulded to his contours. He talks in sentences that go up, up, up, up, up like a rollercoaster car,...

Los Angeles — The seemingly exhausted gross-out comedy genre gets a strange temporary reprieve with "This Is the End," an unlikable but weirdly compelling apocalyptic fantasy in which a bunch of young stars and stars-by-affiliation jokingly imagine their own mortality. A sort-of "The Day of the Locust" centered on successful comic actors, rather than down-and-outers, facing a conflagration in Los Angeles, this is a dark farce that's simultaneously self-deprecating, self-serving, an occasion to vent about both friends and rivals and to fret about self-worth in a cocooned environment. With everyone here officially playing themselves, the result is like a giant home movie and a reality horror show, different enough from anything that's come before to score with young audiences.
With the "Hangover" series outliving its welcome, Judd Apatow moving on to quasi-serious stuff and Johnny-come-latelies like "21 & Over" and "Movie 43" falling short, outrageous comedies aren't what they used to be a few years back.

This is the End

Seth Rogen, more than most comic leading men of his generation, always seems to end up playing himself, for good or ill. From Knocked Up to Pineapple Express to even The Green Hornet, it’s hard to believe that the characters Rogen plays aren’t just named Seth Rogen. His persona, that of a eternally laid-back, chubby, lovable, but somewhat soft pothead, isn’t hard to spot even if his character is a rich playboy or a struggling stand-up comic. And so perhaps it’s fitting that in his newest movie, This is the End, possibly the best he’s headlined and easily the funniest film of 2013 to date, Rogen literally does play himself, leading to gleeful results.
Outside of omitting his real-life marriage, Rogen does play himself—a paparazzo in...

In Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's directorial debut, "This Is the End," the apocalypse descends on the Hollywood Hills, picking off celebrities and nobodies alike from a party at James Franco's geometric mansion. Among those left alive are Rogen, sycophantic sweetie Jonah Hill, art-collecting Franco, Craig Robinson (whose t-shirt blares the imperative: Take Yo Panties Off), horny Danny McBride, and Jay Baruchel, playing the reluctant Canuck appalled by the cheesy evils of Los Angeles. The actors all play themselves -- or hyperbolic versions of themselves. The men are forced to hole up together, with only a dozen water bottles, a Milky Way bar, a prop-revolver from Franco's "Flyboys" and a swath of illegal substances to sustain them while an engulfing fire burns outside. For most of the film, they're trying to figure out what's plaguing L.A. Is it what most upper-class Angelenos fear most, an earthquake? Is it a zombie attack,...

James Franco has been in a few stinkers through the years -- but there's one movie even he admits is pure trash. So, which movie does the star of such poorly-rated flicks as "Tristan & Isolde," "Annapolis," "Flyboys" and "Eat Pray Love" cite as a career low point? The answer: "Your Highness."The medieval comedy, which costarred Natalie Portman, Danny McBride and Zooey Deschanel, was released in 2011 and currently has a horrible 26% on Rotten Tomatoes.“Your Highness? That movie sucks. You can’t get around that," Franco says in the June issue of GQ.This isn't the first time that Franco has publicly criticized one of his own films. While promoting "Spring Breakers," James told Badass Digest that "Annapolis" was "a really bad movie" -- adding that "it didn't turn out very well" and he "ended up not liking the experience and not liking the movie."Ouch, biting the hand that feeds much?...

The psychedelic "Oz the Great and Powerful" arrives in theaters this weekend. Starring the one and only James Franco, the "Wizard of Oz" prequel centers on a small-town magician who winds up in the mythical land after his hot-air balloon gets sucked into a tornado (isn't that always the case?). There, he's confronted with three witches (Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis, and Rachel Weisz), one of whom is up to no good.
In real-life, Franco's no magician (though he did many of his own tricks in the film), but he is a mathematician, having interned at Lockheed Martin, an aerospace, defense, security, and advanced technology company, before he took up acting (among many others pastimes). What else might you not have known about Franco? Check out our list below:
1) For Franco, going to bed means admitting failure: James's brother Dave (who's also an actor, having appeared in films...

Exclusive: In a seven-figure deal, David Ellison’s Skydance Productions has pre-emptively purchased an untitled global disaster film spec script written by Dean Devlin and Paul Guyot. Devlin will make his feature directing debut. Skydance’s Ellison and Dana Goldberg will produce with Devlin and his Electric Entertainment team of Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan. Devlin returns to the global destruction sandbox he played in when he and then-partner Roland Emmerich sold their Independence Day spec for millions, a guaranteed Fox green light and release date, and a global gross north of $800 million. They continued the destruction with Godzilla. While Emmerich continued crushing the planet with The Day After and 2012 (he and Devlin are working on two Independence Day sequels), Devlin formed Electric Entertainment and has put together movies (one was Flyboys, which featured avid aviator Ellison onscreen), and the Noah Wyle telepic series The Librarian. Devlin is currently exec...

"If we taint our blood with booze, we're poisonous to eat." Time for a little drunken Irish fun. A new trailer has arrived online for a Sundance midnight film titled Grabbers, a sci-fi comedy with weird alien creatures that invade a sleepy fishing village off the West coast of Ireland. The cast includes Richard Coyle (W.E, Prince of Persia) and Ruth Bradley (Flyboys, "Love/Hate") and lots of other boozed up local actors who all look like they had fun making this. It looks like quite a bit of low budget, wacky, alcoholic craziness, but I'm not sure the sci-fi element plays much. The song they use is "Black Keys" by The Minutes - check it out! Watch the first official trailer for Jon Wright's Grabbers, originally posted on YouTube: Directed by Irish filmmaker Jon Wright (Tormented), from a script by Kevin Lehane, Grabbers tells the story of Ciarán O'Shea,...

How was your 4th of July? Hopefully no aliens attacked your neighborhood. Its been 16 years since Roland Emmerich redefined the 4th with Independence Day, and for the last few years he's been trying to put together a sequel (last update was last October). Emmerich has been working with co-writer and producer Dean Devlin (The Patriot, Flyboys, "Leverage") to develop the sequel, but they haven't pushed to the point of production just yet. Devlin recently spoke to the Hollywood Reporter and updated them on the status of the Independence Day sequel, and while it doesn't sound ready yet, he is optimistic about it still happening. Devlin told THR: "I can tell you that Roland and I have been working together for the first time in 11 years and we're every excited about the idea of doing it. Whether or not we can make this happen, if we can get all the ...

Even with plenty of competition, Underworld Awakening should still sink its teeth in to the top spot at the box office this weekend. The fourth entry in the action/horror franchise reaches 3,078 locations, while fellow newcomers Red Tails and Haywire open at 2,512 and 2,440 theaters, respectively. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close should attract a sizeable audience in 2,630 theaters, and The Artist will leverage plenty of awards buzz in just 662 theaters. With the plethora of new options, along with a bunch of solid holdovers, it's hard to imagine this weekend finishing below the same time frame last year ($102.7 million). Along with Resident Evil, the Underworld franchise represents a consistent cash cow for Sony's Screen Gems division. All three of the movies have opened north of $20 million, and Kate Beckinsale's last time in the lead role (2006's Underworld: Evolution) currently holds series records with its $26.9 million opening and $62.3 million total. After a Beckinsale-free...

“Destination store” is a marketing term. In retailing it describes a business which doesn’t need to be near other companies or restaurants to succeed. Where most stores need the cumulative value a shopping center provides to bring in customers a destination brings in business on its own.
Think of Ikea. Ikea is the quintessential destination store. It offers a unique assortment of products. Ikea brings more to the table with its services and cafes (and delicious meatballs) than competitors offer. Most importantly, Ikea locates where it wants, and, no matter where that is, customers will flock because what Ikea offers is worth the drive regardless of whatever else is around.
Acting works the same way. At any given time there will always be a select few actors who are so talented and so in control of their craft that moviegoers need to see any movie they are in. The...

It was a mixed bag for PBS last night at the BAFTA TV Awards in London as 'Sherlock' took home two trophies, but 'Downton Abbey' left empty-handed.
'Sherlock' won the coveted Best Drama Series Award, and Martin Freeman ('The Hobbit') won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Doctor Watson in the modern take on the 'Sherlock Holmes' mysteries.
However, Freeman's co-star Benedict Cumberbatch lost out in the Best Actor category to Daniel Rigby ('Flyboys') for his role as legendary British comedian Eric Morecambe in 'Eric & Ernie.' Rigby also beat out fan favorite, 'Doctor Who' star Matt Smith.
'Downton Abbey' was nominated for three major awards -- Best Drama Series, Best Supporting Actor and The Audience Award -- but failed to win any of them.

[1] This article could have an alternate title: Megan Ellison, movie savior. Allow me to explain. Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, has two children with movie business aspirations. David Ellison appeared in Flyboys, was trying to get that Taylor Lautner movie Northern Lights made, and he put up some of the money [2] for Paramount films like True Grit and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. His 25-year old sister Megan is following in his footsteps, and is also listed as an exec producer on True Grit. She's one of the people who put up money for John Hillcoat's The Wettest County in the World, thereby bringing that film back from limbo. And now it looks as if she is ready to co-finance not one Paul Thomas Anderson project, but two: the film referred to as The Master and the Thomas Pynchon adaptation [3] Inherent Vice. Vulture [4] reports that Mr. Ellison is in negotiations to co-finance The Master,...

James Franco’s performance in 127 Hours was rightly praised, but what of his earlier, less prominent roles? Ti takes a look back…
James Franco has just been nominated for Best Actor for his role as Aron Ralston in 127 Hours, a film for which he is receiving high praise. Not just that, but he's co-hosting the Academy Awards ceremony (alongside Anne Hathaway) and is rapidly becoming Hollywood's leading man of choice, thanks to his comedic and dramatic acting chops.
He will soon be seen in Your Highness ("Handle your shit, Fabius, please.") and Rise Of The Apes, all while finishing a PhD in English Literature at Yale.
Clearly, his star wattage is at its zenith, but it wasn't always so.
Fresh off his success as Harry Osborn in the Spider-man movies, Franco was cast as the lead in a number of films, many of which failed spectacularly at the box office...
